Hurrah, Drag Queens!

Funeral parade of roses (1969)
" I am the wound and the blade. Both the torturer and he who is flayed "
Matsumoto only directed a movie. But that movie was probably the work of a lifetime, and he decided not to challenge fate. He couldn't do better, he probably thought.
Funeral parade is a revolutionary movie, one that pushed every boundary far from where it previously was. I couldn't even think of a similar movie done today, especially in Japan. The topics it talks about are so many and so progressive, in a country so peculiar, where everything is considered taboo but at the same time a place where the majority of perversion has begun.
But Matsumoto never gets vulgar, his movie is so poetic, even, and particularly when it shows subject such as porn industry, prostitution, drugs and depression.
And the way Funeral parade talks about transgenders and drag queens is really Majestic. It talks about their struggle, their traumas and love, but it's never too much fixated towards their gender or sexuality, which unfortunately still happens today. It shows that they're people before being queer. Directors today should take example
The scene where Eddie puts make up on has so much impact it's unbelievable, probably my favorite from the whole movie.
My best friend suggested me this movie because it's his favorite. He's one of the few people who I really trust with taste. So I watched and I have to admit that at first it didn't really stuck with me. But the days after I kept going back to it. It was like it was haunting me. I guess that's the power of this film. Maybe it was the epical reference at the end, or maybe it was just meant to leave that trace behind, like a spray of perfume.
Dedicated to Ivan
