You’d tossed and turned for almost an hour before you had eventually drifted off to sleep, only to be awoken by the Denver sunrise spilling through the window. Groaning softly you made a mental note for the shopping trip...curtains...Cale definitely needed curtains. Laying on the couch, you played on your phone for a few minutes before the need to use the bathroom finally took over.
After knocking quietly on Cale’s door with no response, you cracked it open hoping to sneak through to the bathroom without disturbing him. As you tiptoed across his bedroom floor, you couldn’t help but let your eyes fall on him. As expected, he was shirtless, blankets falling only midway up his exposed chest. His hair was a mess, and a relaxed expression covered his face. Quietly closing the bathroom door behind you, you chastised yourself for the heat that flooded through you. You were just friends and despite his now single status, that was all this was ever going to be.
Relieving yourself, you then quickly brushed your teeth before quietly moving back to the living room, easing his door shut behind you. His parents were going to be here in about an hour and after starting a pot of coffee you examined the contents of Cale’s fridge and cabinets. Finding bacon, eggs, and pancake mix you decided to make everyone breakfast. It was as you were moving around the kitchen that Cale finally appeared, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“You’re making breakfast?” He murmured, leaning in to kiss the top of your head.
“I am…” You smiled, checking on the bacon in the oven as you scrambled eggs in a pan on the stove. Cale poured himself a cup of coffee and you felt his eyes on you once more.
“Anything I can do?” He questioned after a moment.
“Get some plates?” You requested. How do you want your eggs?” The clatter of plates filled your ears for a moment as Cale set plates beside you.
“However you’re making them is perfect.” He insisted, sharing a warm grin now that he was a little bit more awake. Nodding you took one of the plates and scooped a hefty portion of eggs onto it before pulling the bacon from the oven and the pancakes from where they were keeping warm in the microwave and piling those onto the plate as well.
“Eat up.” You grinned, turning to place the plate in front of one of the bar stools at the island. Doing another batch of eggs quickly you set everything aside to keep warm before serving yourself a much smaller portion. Taking a seat beside him, you shook your head as you watched Cale continue to dig into his breakfast. The moment felt a little too domestic and natural so you were thankful when there was a knock at the door that signaled that Laura and Gary had arrived.
It wasn’t long after that before you were quickly getting ready and heading out with Laura to go shopping for things for Cale’s apartment. The first place you stopped was Starbucks and then you were off to a local shopping center to do some damage.
“You seem more relaxed…” Laura mentioned as she sat waiting for the light to turn green.
“Yeah uh...we talked after dinner last night. We’re good.” You shrugged. Yes you were close with Laura, but you really didn’t want to tell her the details of your friendship with her son. She seemed to accept that because she nodded and smiled.
“Good. I’m glad.” Her response ended the subject and instead she focused on the task ahead. “So you’ve spent a decent amount of time in Cale’s apartment...what does he still need other than what he mentioned to me?”
“Well curtains would be good. Waking up to the sun isn’t always ideal.” You said, a yawn slipping from your throat. “He could also use a throw blanket for the couch.” You added, pondering over what comforts Cale’s apartment seemed to be missing that would make it feel more like a home.
Wandering through aisles, Laura did most of the shopping, occasionally asking for your thoughts on something before either tossing it into the cart or putting it back on the shelf. As you walked through the aisle containing photo frames you paused.
“What do you think about surprising him with some pictures?” You suggested. He had a couple pieces of ‘artwork’ but there really weren’t any family photos to be found as far as you could see.
“Why don’t you take the reins on that?” Laura replied, a soft look you couldn’t place filling her eyes as she handed you her phone. “Text yourself anything from my camera roll.” As she looked through possible throw pillows, you quickly scanned through the pictures, texting yourself a half dozen that would be perfect. Agreeing to meet up in about fifteen minutes, you headed back to the instant photo machine, plugging your phone in to print the pictures from Laura’s gallery as well as a couple from your own. Satisfied with what you had, you moved back to the frames, picking out one for each photo before moving to find some command strips to hang them with.
On the car ride back to Cale’s place, you worked to get each photo into a frame. By the time Laura pulled back into the garage you were finished and you helped her carry all of the shopping bags inside. Cale had given his mom the spare key in case the two of you were done before he got back and after letting yourselves inside, you went to work on making Cale’s apartment feel just a little cozier. Together you hung curtains up in his living room, tossing pillows and the sherpa throw onto the couch. Then Laura helped you with hanging photos on his bedroom wall while a few of them were placed stationary on a side table in his living room. Laura unpacked the rest of the things Cale had asked her to buy and then the two of you settled onto the couch to watch tv until the guys arrived.
Gary and Cale had picked up lunch on the way home, so the four of you sat down to eat. When you finished, Cale handed you a gift bag and though you had a feeling you knew what it was, you were still anxious to open it. Navy fabric accented with maroon and white spilled around your fingers and you gently ran your fingers over the number 8 and lettering of the nameplate.
“Can’t have you come to the game tonight without proper apparel.” Cale murmured and you jumped up quickly, wrapping your arms around him in a hug.
“It’s perfect.” You agreed. You’d packed the Makar home jersey that you’d bought yourself at the beginning of the season, but you had to admit the thirds were your favorite jersey and getting the jersey from Cale meant just a little bit more than buying one for yourself.
As you cleaned up lunch, Cale started to settle in, getting ready to take his pregame nap. He had acknowledged the curtains, blanket, pillows and other things his mom had gotten him but it wasn’t until he disappeared into his bedroom for a moment that his eyes must have caught the photos. He’d only been gone maybe 30 seconds when he returned, pulling his mom into a huge hug, his eyes soft.
“You framed pictures for me?” He muttered softly.
“That idea was all Y/N.” Laura quickly clarified and immediately Cale turned to you, his arms wrapping around you just as tightly.
“That’s incredible. Thank you.” He whispered into your ear, and when he pulled back his hands lingered on your hips for a moment more.
Soon you were grabbing everything you’d need for the game because you were headed with Laura and Gary to play tourist while Cale napped and then headed to the rink. Laura and Gary had already headed downstairs while you debated on a shirt to wear and you didn’t even notice Cale come up beside you as you dug through your bag.
“Wear that one.” He instructed, pointing to a wine red long-sleeved off-the-shoulder blouse. “We’re going out after the game if we win.” He clarified, rubbing the back of his neck. You were already wearing your favorite pair of jeans and had thrown on a cute pair of tennis shoes for running around. You weren’t exactly a club type of person but going out with Cale and his teammates did seem fun.
“Okay.” You agreed, disappearing into his bathroom to change tops before returning. “Have a good nap. And kick some ass tonight.” You teased, grabbing your makeup bag because you’d barely put any on to go shopping and if you were going out tonight you were going to need to rethink your current makeup. With everything you needed, you snuck a kiss to Cale’s cheek before disappearing out the door to meet Gary and Laura down at the car.
____
The last time you saw Cale play live was versus Calgary during the playoffs. So sitting in the stands of the Pepsi Center watching him warm up was an entirely different experience. You’d watched him on tv many times but in person it was clear to see just how much his game was growing every day. He was almost mesmerizing to watch and tucked in next to Laura, wrapped in his jersey, you felt at peace. Well, at least until the puck dropped for real.
During a commercial break in the first period, the Avs announced a promo game. After the participant was introduced and the game was explained, a baby picture popped up on the screen. In it, a little boy, no more than 9 or 10 months old, sat between the legs of a little girl around the age of five who had a book in her hands. Immediately your own cheeks flushed as you recognized the picture, it was one of your favorites from when you and Cale were super little. The fan playing got one guess of who it was with no options to win an autographed jersey, but they were way off and guessed Nate for some reason. Then multiple choice popped up with Cale’s name, JT’s, and Gabe for a chance at an autographed puck. You didn’t even pay attention to the guess beyond hearing the boos signaling they got it wrong, but instead your gaze landed on Cale who was looking up at the screen, hiding a smile as he took some ribbing by his teammates. Eventually his eyes drifted up to where you were seated and he sent a little wink that you would have missed if you weren’t looking at him. From beside you Laura just smiled and bumped your shoulder, signaling without words just how strong your friendship with Cale really was.
The Avs played a solid all around game and you cheered with each goal scored. Cale had two assists on the night and with the team coming out with the win you knew he was going to be in a good mood. Heading down to the locker room, you listened as Gary rambled on about the game as hockey dads do while sharing looks with Laura that made you burst into laughter.
When Cale finally stepped out of the locker room he hugged his parents before lifting you up and spinning you around.
“You ready to go have some fun?” He inquired, boyish smile on his face.
“Don’t get into too much trouble.” Laura warned, though her expression wasn’t all that serious.
“As if I’d let him.” You joked. For years Cale’s family had the running joke of you being the more responsible one keeping Cale in line. It wasn’t always true obviously, but for the most part the point stood. Still after the past few weeks Cale had had, you were willing to let him go just a little bit crazy tonight, knowing that you would be there as his safety net.
“We’ll see you both tomorrow.” Gary grinned. “Go relax and have a good time.” Cale’s arm drifted around your waist as he tugged you to his car. Once there, you stripped off the jersey leaving you in just the blouse and as he pulled out of the garage you mussed up your hair just a little bit. Using the mirror, you carefully added a little more eyeliner before throwing on a dark lipstick, tossing both cylinders into the cupholder beside you.
By the time you stepped out of the car at the club you felt ready for a night out and as you watched Cale shed his jacket, you felt his eyes on you once more.
Waiting for him to be ready to head inside, you watched as a tall redhead approached, beautiful woman tucked into his side.
“Y/N...this is JT and his girlfriend Lauren.” Cale introduced and you reached a hand out to shake theirs before tucking your hand back into your pocket.
“So this is the best friend.” JT said, smirking. “Bout time Cale finally brought you around, he’s been talking about you for forever.”
“Really?” You teased, ready to throw out a semi-embarrassing tidbit until Cale grabbed you by the waist, his finger falling to your lips to shush you as he guided you inside.
“Can you at least let me get a drink or two in me before you start spilling the embarrassing stories?” He pleaded jokingly.
“I suppose.” You conceded, smiling as he guided you up to the VIP lounge and over to the bar. Settling for a glass of wine, you watched him order a beer for himself before leading you over to one of the many couches. It wasn’t long before you were being introduced to all of Cale’s teammates.
Gabe was boisterous and funny and the way that he looked at his wife Mel made you smile brightly. Josty was a character, he had you laughing almost immediately as he told stories about all of the media events he’d done with Cale and what he’d learned from residing in the same building. He was definitely giving you ammo to use later. Then again they all were, chirps had been flying left and right all night.
You’d been nursing the same glass of wine for about an hour, watching as Cale downed another 2-3 beers as well as a shot that Burky handed him. It was nice to see Cale out with people that clearly cared about him and you knew this was probably the first time he had really been able to let go of all of the stress since the pregnancy scare.
Eventually Mel and Lauren dragged you out onto the dance floor with the other better halves and even though you’d barely had anything to drink, the beat of the music had you relaxing, enjoying the time you had getting to know the people who were part of Cale’s other family.
“You know his eyes haven’t left you all night.” Mel eventually declared, her voice barely audible over the loud music.
“He’s always been a little protective…” You simply shrugged. The look Mel and Lauren shared suggested that they weren’t buying that logic but they didn’t push things. After a few more songs, you left the dance floor to head to the bar for a bottle of water. While there a tall….like really tall, dark haired man who looked like he should star in the next hollywood vampire blockbuster, slipped up beside you, his arm brushing against yours lightly. As you placed him as Cale’s d-partner you smiled up at him before looking back at where the bartender was rushing back and forth.
“You know none of us have ever seen him like this before…” Ryan murmured. “He comes out but he never really lets loose. Now I don’t know whether that’s because it’s the first time we’ve been out since everything happened or if it’s because you’re here but I suspect it’s more to do with the latter.” You didn’t really know what to say to that so you shrugged. “And I’m not saying that in the manner of he feels like you’re the babysitter who will take care of him, I’m saying that he feels comfortable because you’re here in a way he was never comfortable either by himself or with Sara.” Ryan finally managed to get the bartender’s attention and he ordered your water along with whatever he was drinking before continuing. “And I’m sure Cale never said anything and neither did anyone else but...you should know everyone really likes you. And I can’t say the same for Sara.” Just as quickly as he’d appeared, Ryan had walked off and you glanced over at Cale to see his eyes planted firmly on you, his cheeks rosy from the alcohol.
Water in hand, you moved to Cale’s side, his arm wrapping around you immediately. The redness in his eyes told you he’d had a little bit more to drink than he probably should have and you pushed your water his way, not wanting him to be completely impossible to drag home. The grin on his face was lazy as he took the bottle, showing how completely relaxed and at ease he was.
His Adam's apple bobbed as he took a long sip of the water and you tilted your head to observe him, tie gone and the top few buttons of his shirt undone. His fingers slipped just under the edge of your shirt along your hip and you took your own sip from the bottle of water trying to hide the flush that filled your body at the feeling of his fingertips on your bare skin. Passing the water back to him, it was soon gone and once the bottle was empty you stood, looking over your shoulder.
“Are you going to sit there all night or are you going to come dance with me?” You inquired, your tongue running against your bottom lip. Stumbling just slightly, Cale slipped out of the booth and his hand fell to the curve of your back as he guided you over to where his teammates and their significant others were dancing.
With Cale’s chest pressed against your back, his hands fell to your hips once more and the pads of his fingers wandered over every inch of skin they could reach. His touch had never affected you like this before, he’d never been this brazen before, but you chalked both of those factors up to the alcohol. Though you’d only had two glasses of wine since you arrived, wine had always made you far warmer than any other form of alcohol so the heat in your skin was definitely just from that.
“So I have a question…” Cale’s breath fanned over your ear as he leaned down to whisper yell at you, allowing you to hear him over the rap song that was playing.
“Yes Cale?” You replied, tilting your body back against his so that you could see his face. It was even rosier than before and his soft smile was replaced by a serious and focused look causing your eyebrow to quirk at the sight.
“Women like having oral sex performed on them right?” For a split second you were certain that it was only Cale’s hold on you that kept you from falling right over. Choking on your own saliva as you tried to swallow you quickly coughed, your cheeks even more flushed than you could attribute to the wine.
“I...I mean from what I’ve heard yeah…” You finally stumbled out an answer. “Why?” Your question was ignored as Cale’s hands tightened around your hips.
“You’ve heard?” Cale prodded. “You don’t know?” Cursing under your breath you shivered as Cale’s thumb stroked a sensitive spot along your side.
“Cale…” You mumbled, not drunk enough for this conversation. He poked you in the side though signaling you to continue and you groaned. “I mean...I had sex for the first time freshman year of college and we didn’t exactly know what we were doing…” You explained, softly enough that only Cale would hear you. “And I mean I’ve only had sex one other time...it was a one night stand and we were both way too drunk to do anything but fuck. So yeah...I’m just taking other people’s word on it...why are you asking Cale?” You finished, twisting in his arms so that you could look at him properly. His head ducked to press against the crook of your neck and he hissed quietly as you drug your nails along his lower back.
“Just curious…” Cale breathed. “Sara never let me...I mean I wanted to but...she told me she wasn’t interested.” For a moment you didn’t know what to say as that little piece of you celebrated the fact that it seemed there were a lot of things he didn’t do with his ex girlfriend.
“Oh...I mean everyone has their own likes and dislikes…” You reminded him. “But generally equal reciprocation is definitely appreciated.”
As the song ended, Gabe called Cale’s name to go take another shot and you pushed him to go murmuring that you were going to run to the bathroom. By the time you returned, you suspected it was definitely time to get Cale home, so you sidled up to his side, slipping your hand in his front pocket for his car keys.
“I think it’s time we get you home and to bed rockstar.” You declared. Thankfully Cale didn’t put up much of a fight, closing his tab before letting you lead him out of the club. By the time you had parked in his garage, you could see how sleepy the alcohol was making him and you moved around to help him out of the car, his body nearly dragging yours down with its weight.
Stumbling through the door, you urged him to start to bed while you got him more water and some pain killers. Gathering both, you moved to his room after checking to ensure the front door was locked. You found him sitting on the edge of his bed, dressed in only boxer briefs and though you tried not to stare, your body couldn’t help but notice that gone was the teenage boy you once knew and in his place was a man plain and simple. Setting the water and pills on his bedside table, you urged him to take his contacts out.
Once you were certain he was fairly settled, you turned to make your way to the couch. Instead, Cale’s hands reached out to pull you back to him and as he scooted to the far side of the bed, he drug you down with him.
“Cale…” You mumbled in complaint but his eyes were already closed and his breathing was starting to steady out, his hands keeping your body pressed tightly against his. Sighing, you managed to work yourself out of your jeans before giving in and settling in his arms.
Between your conversation with Gravy, the looks Mel and Lauren were giving you, Cale’s inquiry, wandering hands, and this, so many lines had been blurred tonight that it was making you dizzy.
For the second night in a row...your mind reeled as you fell into a fitful sleep.

Four Times Nathan Proposed and One Time He Meant it
Hi! This is my humble contribution to @nolypats and @hockeyboysiguess campaign for Nathan MacKinnon for Hockey Boy of the Month. Please see their blogs for more info, also just because they’re amazing writers. This is my first time trying a 4+1, I thought it would be nice to put something out before the next chapter of Flatbush & Atlantic. It was genuinely so much fun writing this, so please let me know what you think!
Wine pairing: Rotari rosé. @hockeyboysiguess and I have started to pair all of our writings with their own wine, bearing in mind that neither of us knows anything about wine. It’s all about the VIBES.
4 times Nathan proposed and 1 time he meant it
The first time (February)
Jordan knocked on the door, a glass dish balanced precariously on her hip. She and Nathan tried to have a standing date night every week, something that wasn’t grabbing lunch when they were both free or meeting for coffee before she had to head to work and he went to practice. That was, unless there was a game. Or a roadie. Or a team event. So needless to say, the two had been a little strapped for “couple time” recently, and they were both feeling it. She had an article due the next day, a co-write about the use of illegal dark money in a recently-elected congressman’s campaign. Nathan had a long practice that morning and wasn’t feeling too up to anything that would require him to move too far from his couch.
He opened the door, giving her a quick kiss. “I pulled up a few movies I thought you might be into, but didn’t want to pick anything until you got here.”
“You’re so considerate, I think I’m going to swoon,” Jordan said.
Nathan shrugged. “I’ll catch you if you fall.” Deep down, he really was a romantic, though the boys would chirp him endlessly if they knew.
Jordan padded into the kitchen, setting the dish onto the counter and opening up the cabinet right above the toaster oven, grabbing two plates. Even apart from date night, it wasn’t uncommon for them to eat in; partly due to the fact that there were few things in this world Nathan loved more than being able to fly under the radar, something that was a little bit difficult to do when you wore the A for the Colorado Avalanche, but partly because in his own way, it was letting Jordan into his life. “What movies were you looking at?”
“Depends what you’re feeling,” Nathan replied. “We’ve got...Star Wars, Captain Marvel, and 10 Things I Hate About You.”
Her ears perked up. “The one with Heath Ledger?”
“That’s the one. Sound good to you?”
Jordan had always had a penchant for movies of the late-90s and early 2000s, especially if they were romcoms, and especially if said romcoms starred Julia Stiles. As a little girl, there was definitely more than once where she had herself entirely convinced that her life would turn out exactly like The Prince and Me. Minus, of course, the fact that the beginning of Paige and Edvard’s entire relationship was built on lies. Mainly, she was just really into crowns and big poofy dresses as a little girl. “Sounds good to me!” She said brightly. “You want a brownie?”
Nate craned his neck to look at her in the kitchen, looking expectantly at him with one hand holding a spatula. “You made brownies?”
Jordan giggled. “I did. I take it that’s a yes?”
“That’s a definitely, please, my God give me one right this second or I might combust.” She slid the plate onto the side table a minute later, grabbing two napkins. “Are these normal brownies?” Nathan asked, picking one up and inspecting it with a semi-confused look on his face.
“They’re triple-layer, it’s an old recipe for slutty brownies from when I was in college. Bottom’s cookie dough, then Oreos, then fudge brownie on top of that.”
Nate raised an eyebrow. “Slutty brownies?”
Jordan swatted at his shoulder. “I know it’s a weird name, just give them a chance. I know you’ve been feeling a little down with the losing streak, and thought you could use a pick-me-up. They were my go-to for breakups, always seemed to help the girls feel better, so I thought it might work for you too.”
He wouldn’t admit it, but Nathan’s heart skipped a beat with Jordan’s words. “Guess I’ll have to see,” he said, taking a bite out the corner. His face melted. “This is...literally the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Seriously, it’s so good. So good. Oh my God, marry me.”
Jordan flushed, turning to take a sip of water so he wouldn’t see. “I’m glad you like them.”
The second time (May)
It was 11:38 on a Friday night, and Jordan and Nathan were at a bar. To be precise, Jordan, Nathan, and pretty much the whole team were at a bar, plus what seemed like the entire population of Denver. Springtime meant playoff season for the NHL, and winning a series meant going out. Jordan normally had to pass whenever the team decided to hit up a bar or club after a win; as much as she would have liked to go, she was a journalist who kept a 9-5 job, which meant that she had to at least get some modicum of sleep if she was going to be able to function in the newsroom without an injection of caffeine straight into her veins. But it was the weekend, and she’d be damned if she was going to miss out on this.
For the most part, the fans weren’t making a fuss; there was the occasional picture taken or pat on the back for winning the conference semifinals for the first time in twenty years, but nothing out of hand. Sipping her Dark & Stormy, she looked fondly over at Nate, who was having what looked to be a very animated conversation with Burky. Already two and a half drinks in, Nathan was starting to act a little tipsy; while he was normally more reserved about public displays of affection, he kissed Jordan more than one as the night went on. Not like she was complaining. Picking up a refill from the bar, she scooted back into the booth next to Nate. He planted a messy kiss on her cheek. “Where’d you go, Jo?”
Jordan rolled her eyes. “Unlike some of us, I can’t just snap my fingers and have alcohol appear at will. I had to actually go to the bar for another drink,” she teased.
Nathan threw his head back laughing. “‘S’pose you’ve got a point there, babe.” He slung one arm over her shoulders. Jordan unconsciously leaned into his touch. “What’d you think of the game?” She wasn’t able to make it to every game, but was lucky that she could get down to the Pepsi Center more often than not. The Avalanche had beaten the Flames in 6, after dropping the first two games in Calgary and being pegged as another likely sweep, they had come back to win the next four and the series.
“Just trying to stroke your own ego, eh, MacKinnon?”
“Picking up some Canadian slang, eh, Murphy?”
She tilted her head. “Maybe, maybe not. But the game was amazing. You know that. You did amazing, Nate.” In the 3-1 win, Nathan had scored two points, an assist and an absolute beauty of a power-play goal that just barely squeaked into the top left corner above Rittich’s shoulder.
“Sure, maybe I do know,” Nathan admitted, “but it’s one thing hearing it from fans and the media and even my teammates. It’s another hearing it from you.” Jordan loved Nathan, but he wasn’t always the best at expressing his feelings out loud. She was the first one to say “I love you, to introduce him to her parents, to take just about any step forward in their relationship. It was something he was getting better at, slowly but surely, and it meant the world to Jordan that he was trying so hard. Maybe it was the liquor, or the atmosphere, or the excitement of the night, but it meant just as much to her to hear it as it probably did for him to say it.
Half an hour and several drinks later, the last few people left were trickling out. Most had carpooled to the bar, leaving their cars back at the arena to get the next day. Jordan would have ordered Nate an Uber and then just hitched a ride with someone else back towards her apartment west of downtown, but Nate was pretty far gone. And he was a cute drunk, all things considered, but she was on her way to sobering up and felt an obligation to at least get him in bed safe. Their car pulled up, Nathan clumsily ducking in ahead of her as she shut the door behind him, buckling first his seat belt then her own. They walked through his front door fifteen minutes later, Jordan dropping him off in his bedroom to get undressed before grabbing a glass of water and a bottle of Advil. Nathan was in his boxers when she walked in, struggling to pull a t-shirt over his head. Jordan laughed, walking to his side of the bed before gently tugging it, handing him the water and two Advil. “If you take it now, it’ll help with the hangover later.” Kissing his forehead gently, she turned to leave.
“Where are you going, Jo?”
She stopped at the door. “Home?”
“I want you to stay.”
She sighed gently, smiling at him. “Okay, I’ll spend the night.”
“No,” Nathan interrupted, grabbing her wrist lightly as she turned to grab one of his old World Cup shirts to sleep in. “Forever. I want you to stay forever.”
The third time (August)
It was the middle of August, and Jordan and Nathan were in Canada. He had invited her earlier in the summer to visit for a few weeks, and as soon as she got the time off approved, she booked her flight. Getting to Springhill wasn’t the easiest — she flew to Toronto, had a layover, flew to Halifax, then got picked up by Nate for the two hour drive to his hometown. He had flown out in June, about a month after the Avs lost to the Kings in the conference finals, so the couple hadn’t seen each other in nearly two months. Jordan wasn’t about to complain about a few more hours. His parents had been so generous letting her stay for two weeks, and hadn’t batted an eye when Nathan had moved her into his old room. “Just don’t wake us up,” his mom had said, causing Nathan’s cheeks to turn scarlet.
Jordan had met them a few times before; they had flown out for the All-Star game the previous January and had gotten together during the team Moms’ and Dads’ trips. And if she was around when Nathan was FaceTiming them, she always popped in for a few minutes to say hi. But she still hadn’t quite expected the ceaseless hospitality she had been offered over the past week. Maybe Canadians really were just that nice.
Halfway through Jordan’s trip, they decided to throw a barbeque. And by they, that meant it was Nate’s idea and he roped them all into helping. Jordan had already been introduced to a few of his old friends, they had gone out for drinks to the one bar in town on her second night, but she was excited to meet everyone else. His dad Graham was keeping an eye on the grill, Nathan had filled the cooler with drinks, and Jordan was helping his mom carry out the fruit bowl and salad to the backyard. Nathan ran up to his room to change right as people started trickling in, and came back to a yard full of family and friends. He craned his neck, trying to figure out where Jordan had wandered off too, before his sister pointed to where she sat with a few of his cousins.
Nathan opened his mouth, about to ask her something, when Jordan quietly brought a finger up to her lips. “She’s sleeping,” she whispered, gesturing to her arms, where a tiny baby was nestled, eyes firmly shut.
He remembered that his cousin Rachel had had a baby not too long ago, but didn’t realize she’d be old enough to travel yet. “Is this Natalie?” he asked quietly, sitting in the chair next to Jordan. Rachel nodded. For a few moments, Nathan was lost in the scene, lost in how damn perfect Jordan looked with a baby in her arms. They had spoken about those sorts of things — future things — enough to know that marriage and kids were something they both wanted, but this was the first time it had hit him, like really hit him, that that could be them down the line. Over by the fire pit, his mom watched, a soft smile on her face.
Nathan stood in the kitchen with his mom a few hours later, drying off dishes from the party. Handing a plate to him, Kathy shot a curious glance at her son, as if a thought had just popped into her mind that hadn’t been there before. Nate looked back at her, confused. “What is it, mom?
Kathy nodded out the window, where Jordan was laughing at a joke his dad had just made, balancing the last round of dirty plates to bring in on her arm. “When are you going to put a ring on it, Nathan?
Nathan wasn’t particularly prone to blushing, but he had been doing a lot of it lately. “I—uh—” His mom rested a hand on his shoulder with a knowing smile. “Okay, I’ll admit that I’ve been thinking about it.”
Kathy was beaming. “I knew it. When?”
“When am I going to propose?” She nodded. He shrugged. “I don’t know when it’s going to happen, Mom, but it’s going to. I’m going to marry that girl.”
The fourth time (November)
Jordan grimaced, breathing in sharply as she braced her elbows on her desk. Elisa, her friend who worked in the cubicle beside her, looked over, a concerned expression on her face. “You good, hun?”
Jordan nodded mechanically, opening a drawer and pulling out a bottle of ibuprofen, swallowing three with a gulp of water. “Yeah, I should be fine. I should be starting my period in the next day or two, so I’m pretty sure it’s just cramps.”
“Are they usually this bad though?” Elisa had always been a worrier.
She shook her head. “No, not since I went on birth control a few years ago, but who knows. The ibuprofen will help, and it’s probably normal anyways. I’m sure it’ll go away.”
It didn’t go away. Two hours later, when Elisa was finishing up the last paragraph of her analysis of the Broncos’ new coaching hire, Jordan suddenly shot up from her desk, running at breakneck speed towards the women’s bathroom with a queasy look on her face. Elisa followed, bursting through the door to the unmistakable sharpness of vomit. She knelt down next to Jordan, pulling her hair back with the spare scrunchie she kept on her wrist. “Jordan? Are you okay?”
Jordan shook her head. “I feel awful, El.”
Eliss touched the back of her hand to Jordan’s forehead. “You’re warm. Have the cramps gotten better.”
“Worse,” Jordan admitted, wiping at the beads of sweat that had started to accumulate on her forehead.
Elisa pulled out her phone from her back pocket. “I’m calling an ambulance. I don’t think this is cramps, Jo.”
Jordan didn’t have the strength to argue, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to anyways. The ambulance arrived ten minutes later, carting Jordan off to Denver Health Medical Center. “Any chance you could be pregnant?” one EMT asked.
“I could be, but I shouldn’t. I’m on birth control and my boyfriend always uses protection,” Jordan said weakly. The EMT made a scribble on her paper. She barely registered pulling into the hospital, nurses pulling her into the ER, or a doctor wheeling in an ultrasound machine. She was conscious enough to recite her name, date of birth, and insurance number before being taken into the operating room, and then a mask was placed over her nose and her world went dark.
The first thing Jordan did when she woke up was check the clock in her room. It was 3; from what little she remembered, she had been taken to the hospital sometime a little after noon. “Oh, thank God,” she heard from her left side. She recognized that voice. It was Nathan’s voice. He grabbed her hand — the one that didn’t have an IV drip in it — and kissed it quickly, smoothing back the pieces of her hair that had come out of the hair tie. “Elisa called during practice, and she told me what happened, but she didn’t even know what happened, and then I left and drove over here, but then—”
Jordan laughed softly, feeling a dull pain in her lower abdomen. “It’s fine, Nate, I’m fine. What happened, anyways? I don’t remember anything after I went into surgery, I have no idea what it was even for.”
“You had appendicitis, your appendix was about two seconds away from bursting.”
Jordan let out a low whistle. “Glad that didn’t happen. Hey,” she added as an afterthought, “I thought visiting hours here didn’t start until 4?” Jordan had visited a college friend of hers who had had a baby a few weeks prior, and could have sworn that she wasn’t let in until later.
Nate smiled sheepishly. “Yeah, they do. I couldn’t even figure out what room you were in at first. They wouldn’t tell me anything, so I told them I was your fiancé.”
“Oh, did you now?”
Nathan rubbed his thumb over her finger. Her ring finger. “I mean, it’s pretty much true. All I’ve got left to do now is ask you.”
“And get the ring,” Jordan added.
“Nope.”
+1 (January)
Family skates had quickly grown to be one of Jordan’s favorite parts of the season. She had loved the first one, but had felt just a tiny bit out of place; her and Nathan had only been dating for a little over six months, and it seemed like almost everyone else had known each other for years. But she’d forged some amazing friendships with other WAGs over the past year, trading babysitting duties for pies and meeting to watch the game while the boys were on a road trip, sharing new Spotify playlists and learning how to support each other along the way. The team had become her second family, even though her parents only lived an hour and a half away.
Jordan had been a competitive figure skater throughout high school and into college, so she was no stranger to the ice. She obviously couldn’t get out nearly as often as she had before, but her skates still fit and she could still land a triple salchow after warming up. She and Nate had been skating around for an hour or so, taking a break after some “friendly competition” where Josty had made the mistake of challenging Jordan to a race around the rink. She beat him by two seconds.
Jordan unscrewed the top of her water bottle, taking a few grateful sips before putting it back in her bag. “Babe!” Nate called from a few rows away, where some of the younger kids were gathered next to what looked like pastels. “Want to face paint?”
She smiled, raising her eyes playfully as she popped on her blade guards and walked over towards the bench. “You sure about that one, MacKinnon? I’m not much of an artist.”
He nodded enthusiastically. “It’s okay, I bet you’ll be great!” He was so sweet for believing in her.
“Alright,” Jordan said, straddling the bench and picking up the box. “What would his highness like for the design? Bear in mind you’re working with a beginner here.”
“Butterfly!” He chirped excitedly. “There’s been a whole bird and insect theme going on here,” he pointed at the kids’ cheeks, covered in bees, ladybugs, and one demonic-looking...crow? Was it a crow? Did they even get crows at this time of year? “and I wouldn’t want to break the trend.”
“We couldn’t have that,” Jordan agreed. Ten minutes later Nathan had a very blue, barely-acceptable-looking butterfly on his right cheek, but he was beaming like the sun as soon as he pulled up his camera to look at it. “I love it, Jo. Thank you,” Nate said, giving her a quick kiss.
Activities wrapped up not too long after, and Jordan and Nathan walked out of the rink hand-in-hand towards his car. They had moved in together two months earlier, and Jordan had been more than happy to move out of her tiny studio into Nate’s giant apartment, where you could see the Rockies from the rooftop on clear days. Plus, his building allowed dogs. As Nathan drove home, one hand on the steering wheel and the other tangled with hers by the center console, Jordan looked over at him, with the little blue butterfly on his cheek, and she suddenly felt so unbelievably happy. So unbelievably full. It went without saying that she loved Nate. She loved him like she had never loved anyone before, and never would again.
At the same time, Nate’s heart was beating faster than it ever had in his life. He wasn’t scared, he wasn’t surprised, but he had just realized something. He already knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Jordan. Nathan had realized that months ago. And he hadn’t been lying at the hospital, he had already bought the ring. But Nathan wanted everything to be perfect when he proposed; it couldn’t be rainy outside, because what if she wanted pictures? It couldn’t be too soon after her older brother’s wedding, because then she might think that was the reason why. It couldn’t be in the summer, because then he’d go back to Nova Scotia for the summer and his mom might scalp him for leaving his fiancée in another country. But, Nathan realized as they pulled into the underground lot, there never was going to be a perfect time. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he wanted to be Jordan’s husband. There shouldn’t be anything stopping him. There wasn’t anything stopping him.
“I’m going to run to the bathroom,” Nate said as Jordan slipped off her shoes. She nodded. Nathan went up the stairs, but past the bathroom. He walked into their bedroom, into his closet, to the shoebox that had his old atom league medals. He grabbed the velvet box, opening it and taking one last look before taking a deep breath and putting it in his pocket.
“You want to watch SVU reruns?” Jordan asked as he ambled back into the living room.
His mouth opened and closed like a fish. “Uh—can I say something?”
Jordan looked over. “Yeah, go ahead? We can totally watch something else if you’re not feeling Law & Order, I think I saw Chopped on the Food Network, or Jurassic Park is halfway through…” She trailed off.
Nathan shoved his hands in his pockets, turning the ring box over and over. He bit his lip. “You know how much you mean to me, right?” Jordan nodded slowly. “When I met you, I wasn’t looking for anything. I had just had my heart broken by someone who I thought would be my forever, but then you came into my life and suddenly...suddenly, it all made sense. I thought I knew love, I thought I knew what it was to be in love, but I didn’t, really. Not until you. You bring me down to earth, Jordan, when I’m too far in my head. I know you’re on my team even when we’re losing, even when it seems like nothing in my life is going right I know you’ll always be there to pick me up when I fall. And I don’t ever want to take that for granted. You challenge me in the best way, you always push me to be a better partner, a better teammate, and a better man. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for you.” Jordan was tearing up, starting to figure out where his whole speech was going and hoping beyond hope that she was right.
“I know I’m not always physically here, but I promise to always be there for you, Jordan. I’ll hold you when you’re crying, I’ll buy your favorite chips when we’re out, I’ll pay the utility bills because I know you’re terrible with remembering dates. It was eight months in when I realized you were the one.” Nathan bent down on one knee. One of Jordan’s hands was over her mouth, the remote having long since been abandoned on the couch. “I can’t wait to see where we go, Jordan. I can’t wait to get a nice house with a big backyard, go down to the animal shelter saying we’re only going to adopt one dog but come back with three. I can’t wait for the day you tell me you’re pregnant, and we get to hold our child for the first time and I get to see you be a mother. I can’t wait for us to start our lives together. I can’t wait for you to be Jordan MacKinnon.” He opened up the ring box. “Will you marry me?”
Jordan fell on her knees, hands on both sides of Nathan’s face. “Yes.”

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
Happy Thanksgiving, my wonderful Canadian readers! To celebrate this special day, I couldn’t have had a better guest! I am truly honored to be featuring Kaitlyn Harris from decorating__life on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. Kaitlyn lives in Calgary, Canada and you might even remember seeing this stunning home on the blog before. Keep reading and you’ll understand better as this homeowner explains below…
Hi everyone, my name is Kaitlyn Harris and I’m an interior designer based in Calgary, Canada (@decorating__life). Thank you so much for the opportunity to share my home on this amazing blog; I’m honored and excited to be part of such an amazing resource for the design community.
First let me start by saying I’m very grateful and fortunate to own a home that is well known among the design community – in fact, it’s even been featured as a previous Design Inspiration here on Home Bunch! The home was originally designed and built by a local builder called Veranda Estate Homes, and they lived in it from 2011 to 2017. I feel strongly that when a builder designs and constructs their own personal home, it’s probably done to the highest standards possible; this house was no exception. The attention to detail in the home was above anything we had seen in our search, and we instantly fell in love with it.
My husband, Steve, and I built our previous house from the ground up before our two sweet kids – Winnie (age 4) and Cash (age 2) – came along; so we began our home search by looking for empty land where we could build a customized acreage property better suited to our current life. However, after seeing limited options and facing challenging conditions during our search (hiking through feet of snow!) we decided to look at existing properties. We came across our would-be home: a stunning two acre property with over 7,000 square feet of developed space. The home features six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a 1,400 square foot garage, gym, 650 plus bottle wine bar and plenty of marble – just how I like it!
On our first tour of the home, we knew the layout and design was perfect for us, however, we could see some opportunities to improve on existing spaces and tailor them to our needs. Steve works in ecommerce, developing and growing online businesses. I do contract interior design work, when I’m not busy being a mom. We needed a house that was very specific to our lifestyle – lots of space was a must since the entire family is home every day. It was also important we had functional workspaces, in addition to extra usable rooms we could sneak away to for a moment of peace.
We purchased the home in the dead of winter, and moved in the following summer in 2017. The last year has been a fun process making the home our own and reimagining various spaces to fit our unique lifestyle. I had seen this home before on social media, and never dreamed it would become my own. My husband and I worked very hard to achieve this goal, and often the realization that this is our home still hits me – I love it so much!
In the photos below I’ll recap some of the spaces original to the home (with my decorating touch applied!), then explore some of the bigger changes we’ve made since moving in. Enjoy, and thank you once again for allowing us to show you our home – we’re truly honored!

  Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
From the moment we drove up the long driveway, we were in love! This home has a very grand, but inviting curb appeal with large double iron front doors and a front veranda.
Front Door
The driveway continues past the front door to a large parking pad (we keep trying to think of a fancier name for it!) and the four car garage. Step inside…
Exterior Sconces: Visual Comfort.
Foyer
Upon entry our guests eyes are guided up the stairs to a large light fixture and walk way to the master bedroom.
Staircase
This grand foyer and spiral staircase is well-loved on social media.

Welcome!
We appreciate that visitors at the front door can’t see into common areas, which is great for privacy and leaves something to the imagination.
Entry Bench: Wayfair.
Rug: Safavieh 4×6
Paint Color
Paint color is Benjamin Moore Seapearl.
Dining Room
This room underwent a major overhaul immediately after moving in. The original dining room felt dark and heavy with tons of wood, and we prefer a brighter / lighter style. With a few coats of paint (including the ceiling) and the addition of a beautiful marble top dining table, the room now feels inviting and elegant. The marble top table is a great tie-in to the kitchen and butler’s pantry.
Dining Table
Our dining chairs are classic oval backs, with a durable fabric that will withstand family dinners for years to come. We’re still searching for the perfect fabric for drapery in this room.

Kitchen
We’ve made no major changes to this kitchen since purchasing the home – how could you! It’s absolutely gorgeous with a full marble countertops and backsplash.
Long before we moved in I searched for the perfect bar stools for the island. I eventually found them on Wayfair, and although they took 10 months to arrive, they were worth the wait!

Great Room
This room is probably the most shared and pinned photo of this home – it was on my Pinterest board years before we owned the property. The great room features beautiful wood beams, a large stone fireplace and mantle, and our favorite feature: an oversized window bench.
Window-seat
The bench is one of our most common family hang out spots, and has large drawers underneath for toy storage.
Fireplace
The TV in this space is rarely used, so we often cover it up by leaning art on the mantle. It helps emphasize the high ceiling height in this room and nicely balances this grand fireplace.

Wood Crate: Wayfair.
Powder Room
The powder room features a classic marble washstand with metal base and wall paneling.
Washstand: RH – similar here.

Mudroom
We’ve left the original mudroom intact with no major changes. We followed the advice of our realtor, who told us to always put your kids cubbies furthest from the door – there’s nothing worse than a toddler sitting on the floor to take off their shoes while you have your arms full of groceries!
Pendants: Visual Comfort.
Wallpaper: Anthropologie.
Cow Head Bust: Sagebrooke Home.
Similar Baskets: Here.
Playroom
Our previous home had an upstairs bonus room where the kids watched TV and played with toys. This home doesn’t have one in the layout, so we reimagined an upstairs bedroom and converted it into a playroom. We added wall decals, custom art and installed a TV. The bedroom has a large closet, which is perfect for toys, and an attached bathroom. It’s become a favorite hangout space before bed, and the best part about it, you can close the door and hide the mess!

Previous Home
Cashton’s bedroom in our old house was one of my most popular social posts, and it’s widely shared on Pinterest / Instagram – you’ll see most of the same furniture. The custom made “pipe” shelf was sourced from a local handyman who builds these using unused materials from job sites.
Son’s Bedroom
Cashton’s bedroom had a large hand-painted mural in it that didn’t fit our design plan for the room. Due to the thickness of the paint and the ridges it created, we had to have the wall skim coated and repaired to achieve a flat paintable surface. The whole room was repainted in a steely blue.

Faucet: Kohler.

Similar Hardware: Here.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper is from Anthropologie.
Bathroom Floor Tile: 2” white hex tile with a black pencil and white ceramic boarder.
Daughter’s Bedroom
The original owner of this home had two boys, so this bedroom required a major overhaul. Like most little girls, my daughter loves pink and princesses, and the existing wallpaper, paint and window coverings we’re not going to work for her.
Immediately upon move-in we stripped the wallpaper and repainted the whole room a soft pink color. Custom drapery was added above the window bench – which we repurposed from our last home – I made all of the paper flowers on the wall by hand, and we stapled those to the wall around her canopy.
Bed: Ikea.
Dresser
The dresser is originally from IKEA, and we added the custom gold molding details (from “Overlays”) to ensure it was cohesive with the room.
Similar Mirror: Here.
Paint Color
Paint Color: Behr RD-W3 My Sweetheart.
Master Bedroom
One of our first priorities in this home was to brighten up the master bedroom with new paint. We also plan to add some architectural details to the walls / ceiling in the future (such as paneling or beams). The window looks out to a pond frequented by moose and deer.

Her Office
My previous homes never had an office I could devote to my design work, and finally I have this perfect spot to edit my photos and sketch new ideas. The built-in desk is located off the master bedroom, and looks out to the front of the property. I love working here in the morning and enjoying a coffee while my daughter lays in my bed watching TV.

Dressing Room
Steve and I have separate his and hers closets, which means I can keep my closet perfectly organized and feminine (there’s a reason his isn’t pictured!) The closet has lots of built-in shelving and a full dresser with jewelry drawers. The oval shaped window lets in plenty natural light, which helps this space feel clean and airy.
Master Bathroom
Women swoon over this master bathroom! A luxurious, marble-clad space featuring dual vanities, a soaker tub, makeup desk and family shower.
We purchased the large freestanding mirror from the original owners – source here.

Shower
The multiple shower heads and body-sprays are ideal for cleaning up the kids after a messy meal – they also love creating potions in here!
Flooring

His Office
Function was key in my husband’s office. In order to effectively work from home, he needs a space away from the “action” of the kitchen / family room, lots of natural light and plenty of storage. This office is located right off the front entrance, with a perfect view of the driveway and gate. It has built in cabinets and we converted one side into a foam-lined recording booth that he uses for webinars and training videos; the desk was purchased from the original sellers. I made him hide three additional computer monitors for the sake of this photo shoot!

Entertainer’s Dream
My husband has a large scotch collection as well, which we keep outside the wine room in a back-lit mirrored shelving area. The bar is outstanding for entertaining and storage, with a built in TV and our own house cocktail menu for guests to choose from.
Cabinetry is Alder.
Brass Hardware: Pulls & Knobs.
Wine Room
This amazing 650+ bottle wine room and bar is definitely a focal point in the basement. While not big wine collectors originally, our passion for it has grown and the wine room is now well stocked.
Flooring
Floor is heated concrete.
Gym
We always loved the idea of having a dedicated gym in our house, however our homes in the city never had the space. This gym helps us avoid driving on treacherous winter roads, and it’s a good escape when you need to blow off some steam. The mounted TV is great for watching spin classes or YouTube workout videos – it’s like having a built-in trainer.
Guest Bedroom
We love to entertain, and after a night of games and wine we see lots of overnight guests. This room was completely overhauled with new paint, a large TV and comfortable amenities for guests. We keep the drawers stocked with overnight supplies so an advanced reservation is never required.

We leave our most commonly used house liquor here and it’s the ideal spot to make a quick drink for guests.

Beautiful Pin Boards: Here.
Beautiful Floor Mirrors: here, here & here.
Tub Accent Table: Aidan Gray.
Vanity
Bathroom cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore Seapearl.
Chair: Wayfair.

Shower
The multiple shower heads and body-sprays are ideal for cleaning up the kids after a messy meal – they also love creating potions in here!
Flooring
The bathroom featuring hardwood flooring in a herringbone pattern.
Sconces: Visual Comfort.

We have visions of converting this space to a pub feel, so there’s still some work to be done.
Barstools: RH – similar here & here (counterstools)

Interior Design Toronto - Spotlight on RetroWorks
Today's Interior Design Toronto store spotlight focuses on RetroWorks, one of Toronto's premier retailers of handcrafted industrial style furniture, including bookcases, coffee tables, end tables, media consoles, bar carts as well as retail and hospitality shelving and displays.
What brands does RetroWorks represent?
RetroWorks designs and makes all of our furniture locally in Toronto. Jamie Filman is our Head Designer.
Store Locations
RetroWorks is an ONLINE only business located in Toronto. Check out their collection.
Company History
RetroWorks was founded in 2013 by Jamie and Liz, a husband and wife team, who first started to make industrial style furniture for themselves as they furnished their first home together. Then their hobby quickly grew into a full blown passion and they began to craft furniture professionally. Jamie, an engineer who has been compelled to design and build things his entire life, and Liz, a financial services professional with a background in website development, leveraged their combined skills to start an online store for their industrial furniture business. RetroWorks began by first designing their staple Industrial Bookcase, and took care to design and include stylized accents that adhered to a true industrial style aesthetic, including our including our steel plate corner brackets, the rivet bolts and our brass corporate boilerplate. These design elements have now become our signature look and are featured on all of our designs. The business grew by first selling to homeowners across North America, but we did not accept custom orders for the first year. But shortly afterwards, we opened up to custom requests as well as commercial and hospitality customers and as a result, our product line has became much more sophisticated and diverse over the last few years. We enjoy working with our customers now on all custom projects and helping them bring their vision to life.
What makes RetroWorks unique?
RetroWorks specializes in expertly engineered, handcrafted furniture that is equal parts durability and elegance, and is as functional as it is stylish. Our furniture suits any design motif and the quality of our work will stand up to the test of time. That is why we love what we do. Our furniture is strong enough that it will outlast us on this earth and because it evokes a classic vintage aesthetic, it will also never go out of style.
What's new in store?
We've had a huge year in terms of product development this year. We've outfitted a spa in Northern Ontario with large display cases, a coffee counter and some mobile console tables. We've also designed a tall industrial kitchen console for a local Toronto restaurant that features cabinet doors on the bottom of the shelf and open shelving on the top of the shelf. They use this for their point of sale station as well as for storage of their table and glassware. None of these items have made it into our catalog yet, but they will be soon, once pictures are available. However, most recently, we have just completed a custom glass display cabinet for a retailer of luxury merchandise in Calgary. We were really thrilled with the result and we've added it to our regular catalog now. It's a beautiful combination of the cool hardness of steel, the organic warmth of wood and the luxurious sheen of the glass. The glass cabinet can now be found here.
RetroWorks - Plans for the Future
We're currently working on a design for a large, custom wine cabinet for a customer in Toronto. This is going to be a very special piece that will crafted to store a wine fridge, a wine rack, wine glasses and it will feature a showstopper of a walnut countertop, made by another Toronto artisan, Jack from Son of a Woodcutter. We're very excited about this one.

Modern Farmhouse Renovation
This home was a full renovation in a very desirable area of Calgary that offers incredibly large lots and parks all around. The clients had lived in the ‘before’ for some time, so they had a good idea of what they wanted for the final product and it was such a pleasure working with them! The builder, Veranda Estate Homes Inc., took the home down to the studs and incorporated all new electrical, plumbing, and insulation throughout the home. There were also two small additions, one was extending the kitchen by 2’ towards the backyard and the other was building out over the garage to create a larger master suite area and a master bathroom.  Take a  look at the before images. This, now modern farmhouse, certainly went through a huge transformation!!!
  Modern Farmhouse Renovation
The “Before & After” is quite shocking, right? Notice the improved architectural details this home now features.
Black Windows
Pictures were taken before landscaping and furniture went in but this home renovation is so inspiring that I really think you guys won’t mind these “final” details.
Windows: Black aluminum clad windows.
Roof: Dual Black asphalt roof.
Exterior Paint Color
Stucco was match to Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17.
Soffits are Cedar with a clear finish on them. I am loving this look!
Front Door
Front door is custom, stained black on the exterior and lacquered to match the trim on the interior.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
Photography by Phil Crozier.
(Note: I am reposting this today because I am not feeling 100%, but I will be back soon with a new post! Thank you, my friends!

Similar Tables: here & here.

The butler’s pantry is located between the dining room and kitchen, and includes a sink, glass / bottle storage and an icemaker.
We leave our most commonly used house liquor here and it’s the ideal spot to make a quick drink for guests.
Hardware & Lighting
Stone is solid Statuario slab marble countertop and backsplash.
Lighting: Visual Comfort.

Rug: Rugs.ca Copenhagen Rug – similar here & here.
Details
Hardwood flooring is Rustic Hickory planks finished on site. The beams are alder and the stone veneer used on fireplace is similar to Montana Quartz – similar here.

Pantry
This pantry got so many pins last time I shared it on the blog! It has a fantastic layout and I love the fact that it was a microwave.
Stand Mixer: KitchenAid in Aqua Sky.
Wood Crate: Wayfair.
Powder Room
The powder room features a classic marble washstand with metal base and wall paneling.
Washstand: RH – similar here.
Similar Mirror: here.

Barstools: RH – similar here & here (counterstools)

Unwind
With such a short summer, we spend most warm nights outside enjoying the peace and quiet; the outdoor fireplace sees plenty of action, and the kids enjoy watching a show while mom and dad relax.
Decor
I designed and drafted our outdoor dining table, which was then custom built by my father-in-law – it has a composite decking top, which is incredibly durable for our harsh winters. There is also a large seating area opposite the dining area which is not pictured.
