So difference between me playing Crusader Kings and Bannerlord is that in Crusader Kings I actually know who the fuck my children are. I am probably plotting to kill at least one of them, but I know who they are. When the little make a decision button comes up in Bannerlord, I have to figure out if it's my kid or a niece/nephew.

what warband mods would you rec? I only ever played vanilla warband years ago and that was probably on fairly low AI settings, but I'm definitely intrigued by getting the full feudal clusterfuck experience as well as indulging in some nostalgia.
there's a few qualifications to these, because I usually like them for different reasons and I have something wrong with me, but...
< ! PREEMPTIVE WARNING ! > you should be running modules in Warband Script Extender even if they don't say they need it! people have historically been really bad about clarifying when it's expected
Bannerpage - vanilla for people who want More of it, and then more after that. it reminds me of a spiritual successor to Floris Modpack. an enormous expansion that's also a bit of a tongue in cheek what-if for "Bannerlord, except as continued development of Warband" with increasing complexity. this one will probably spoil you a bit on other modules just because of how many little enhancements it pulls on the native systems lol
Prophesy of Pendor - the premier feudal fantasy rpg experience. this one is brutally difficult and throws some battles at you with genuinely bewildering enemy force sizes. I'd feel fairly confident in calling this the most difficult of the major total conversion modules that maintain core M&B gameplay
Touhou Gensokyo Warfare~the Castiron Flame - this is straight up glorious kusoge and I love it dearly. it often breaks so severely due to its own design decisions that it creates a unique high-skill gameplay expectation that exists in literally no other mods, but also it can't really be called "core" M&B gameplay anymore. this module actually consists of three chinese mods (Touhou Tinder, Touhou Origin, and Touhou Beat), one of which is derived from a fork that was extended by /jp/, another which was just translated by /jp/ (a shoddy translation but not distinctly a 4chan translation, if that's a concern), all of which were merged into one mod and managed by a passionate and cool chinese mod team. none of this comes to a consistent artistic vision. every single character looks like kigurumi cosplay and they all look like they're from different manufacturers. this is my favourite module. I could play it for years.
Perisno - a strange bird of a module that I don't see mentioned much anymore. a shame, honestly, because it's quite fun if you like higher fantasy settings. a bit overconfident with its own setting lore at times, but that really just makes it more authentic as a high fantasy setting, doesn't it? anyway they funnelled the mod development efforts away to a standalone game in the setting because of that, and I wish them well, but you know how it goes with that sort of thing
Gekokujo Daimyo Edition - a modification of an older warband module that was originally a touhou hijack that was originally a mod for the non-Warband game made by japanese players annoyed that nobody in the western playerbase was making mods with a japanese setting. it's buggy, it's incomplete, it will explode at you randomly, but it's still pretty neat. there's really no other mod out there that gives you such a thorough "I HATE THE TANEGASHIMA I HATE THE TANEGASHIMA" experience. Sengoku Era, a successor mod, will probably replace it on recommendation lists when it eventually releases.
Warsword Conquest - this is the Warhammer Fantasy mod. it has all the problems you'd expect from that. that being said, the sheer level of detail in this mod makes it more than worth dropping in to check it out. some of the environments are gorgeous enough to make Warband feel like an entirely different game, and with a surprising variety of firearms, the average campaign ends up being a pretty wild ride
Brytenwalda - I'm not recommending Brytenwalda as an experience, because it's actually not that good a very interesting moment in M&B modding history. Brytenwalda is the birthplace of a lot of mod tropes that became standard in mods going forward, namely most culture-related systems and the modern standard for module graphics. it also introduced tripping and represents the moment people started making really annoying attempts at jury-rigging balance into the game before Warband Script Extender came around and actually allowed them to modify the lower systems of the game. still kinda neat if you like historical settings, and definitely foundational enough to warrant a look
Last Days of the Third Age - infamously hard-headed in a way that only a mod for a feudal warfare simulator rpg made by Tolkien nerds who insist on book>movie aesthetics could pull off, this isn't really core M&B gameplay and is very rigid, but it's another case of something being so detailed and passionate that it's a fun experience anyway.
Solid and Shade - this is actually the best hardcore survival horror experience made for Warband, which is a bit like saying that Harvester is the best FMV game ever made about waking up in a town named Harvest. the Harvester comparison is more than surface level. the writing often feels like Harvester. this is one of the only modules (hell, one of the only games even!) I've ever seen that successfully pulls off the concept of corrupting players with the promise of immortality. it's a horror mystery where every single character creation option affects your longterm gameplay... but to provide a fair warning, reading the developer's commentary on this mod will sour you on it. the developer is an edgelord who just kinda kitchen-sinked horror elements in a way that reminds me a lot of Revolution of Terror (the old Well of Souls mod). the compelling esoterica and atmosphere seem to have been achieved largely on accident

WIP Wtechnically Thursday
whoops neither sleep nor writing for me
I haven't had much writing done lately, as I've been busy reading, playing wargames and also playing obscene amounts of Bannerlord, but I'm trudging through loss.pdf and also a couple of rarepair projects...
Tagging @night-dark-woods, @gaymarasov , and whoever wants to do it I guess!
loss.pdf
it's going... it's not going. my hype was bigger than my ability to write serialized prose back when I posted their meaningless loss so I suffer. I dejectedly poke at different chapters like a meal I don't wanna eat. It doesn't feel great!
have an excerpt, though
"You must be Shadowheart's father." The elf nods curtly. "I remember you from the cloister." And so does Nocturne. She remembers being taught the ways of pain and truth, remembers strapping him on a table to learn how to make lying Selûnite mouths vomit truth instead of light. She remembers a hot poker in her trembling hand and the smell of burning human skin. But didn't she, too, enjoy it? Didn't she laugh at their — Shadowheart's parents, Nightsinger unmake her — cries of pain, too? Didn't she preen at Mother's praise?
my girfriend and I saw you across the refugee camp and we really dig your vibe
Alfira/Lakrissa/Nocturne. t4t4t (tiefling4tiefling4tiefling. two out of three tieflings are also trans). Nocturne gets to bond with people outside of the cult and be something else than a Sharran or an appendage of Shadowheart!
"Maybe they took you for one of us Elturellans," offers Lakrissa, "they've been hassling us every time a house gets looted or whatever. As if Baldurians wouldn't, you know. Well," she gestures towards Nocturne and Nocturne answers with what all three tieflings are thinking. "Well, I'm Baldurian. But do you think they give a damn?" Lakrissa lets out a mirthless laugh. "Chew off a tiefling and feel like you told Asmodeus himself where to stick it. Figures." She sighs. "I gotta get back to work. Stay for as long as you need, alright? No big deal. What was your name again?" The vise of fear eases its grip. "Nocturne."
lakrissa x nocturne thing question mark
not a lot written on this one and I may try another perspective but I do want to do something with this pairing since @linka-from-captain-planet opened my eyes. have an excerpt that I may scrap but that hopefully captures the rancid vibes
She looks over her shoulder to beg with that pretty mouth of hers, "harder", and Lakrissa's hips stutter, driving the glass cock strapped to her hips further into this stranger bearing the face of a dead woman.

Worth noting that my model of an "Open world RPG" is broader and more literal than what you might assume if your primary model of those comes from modern AAA games that do little to innovate.
To me, games like Ultima, Fallout, ELEX, Gothic, Darklands, and Caves of Qud are all open world games. It's actually a very rich and varied genre in that sense. It's really any game where you can move as you please, go through the game non-linearly, and have a relatively high amount of agency.
This is also distinguished from sandbox RPGs, which is what I consider all of the ones where there's much more of a focus on living within the game's world and the "main quest" is either non-existent or seriously de-emphasized.
In this category I'd place games like Kenshi, Bannerlord, and Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.
So really neither of them is limited to the "climb towers and go to map markers to do your chores" style of game that a lot of people expect when they hear those terms.

All of his interactions with Quackity are gold
Bullying Dream for his homelessness
Bannerlord streams
“Welcome home, Theseus” + all his other cool speeches on the dsmp

Remembering the time when I was a diehard fan for Edward Elric from FMA. I mean I still am a fan but I think this had escalated into “minor crush” because I was apparently gay except for when it came to dudes with long hair. Still kinda do have that exception. I just think long hair (and maybe a bit of scruff) on a guy is aesthetically pleasing. I think it’s the rugged outdoorsy look they’ve got going.
But that’s not remotely the point of this post.
I was a fan of Edward Elric back in high school. Talked about how cool he looked, pretty sure he was my desktop background at some point. Just generally a tick above a “normal” level of fan for it. Friend of mine kept being like “pixels, Mass, he’s pixels”. (Look this was over a decade ago, I’m over it and I’m sure they were just like repeating shit they’ve heard - I don’t think they were intentionally being malicious or a dick)
And I’m just thinking about that today. Because it’s not like the fact that they’re pixels but the fact that they’re pixels that represent something. I know Edward Elric isn’t real. More recently: I know Soma isn’t real, I know Wonder Woman isn’t real, neither is Lara Croft, Eivor, Prentiss, Moiraine, etc.
They’re all pixels or polygons or words on a page or lines in a drawing. And it’s like “your point?”
I still can’t watch that cutscene in AC Valhalla (y’all know the one) - I can barely look at the gifsets. But Eivor and Soma got me through the hell year that was 2021.
I cried when Moiraine lost her connection to the source and cried when she got it back - she showed me that I could lose everything and get knocked to rock fucking bottom and come back up swinging. I connected with Mat Cauthon because I perpetually felt like a fuck up my entire life. Seeing him succeed gave me hope.
Lara Croft and Wonder Woman both got me through most of undergrad. Just because they were kinda chill imaginary friends for me in a time where I felt desperately alone and in a dark ass place. They gave me confidence and strength.
You know what got me through most of the pandemic? Dragon Prince and a very specific YouTuber’s play though of Bannerlord. Both of those got me to start HEMA which the physical activity and socialization helped me out immensely. Led to me getting involved in medieval shit and eventually the SCA. But on a more basic level: I could pretend I was not stuck alone in an apartment in Reno a country away from my family. Was definitely on an epic quest of some sort … was just currently stuck because the snows had made the mountain passes inaccessible for like a year.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: “they’re pixels” … yeah … and? Turns out our brains are real great at pretending they’re not pixels. It can sometimes go a little far - you can sometimes define your life by them and I personally think that can be maladaptive (but I do it too). Like sometimes you see something in fiction and your brain can log it as an IRL example of something - see why transphobic bullshit in movies can be super fucking harmful.
But like characters and stories and stuff? They’re meant to appeal to our emotions, they’re meant to get us invested as if they were real, and that can help people.
They’re pixels.
So what?

My bannerlord character has a 2 year old daughter who is apparently extremely deceitful and extremely calculating (giving infants a mix of their parents' traits sure looks dumb when you type it out) so maybe I should wait for her to turn 18, then switch to her and start a rebellion?
I was just looking at my characters younger sister's stats and she has the same amount of attribute points as my character despite being less than half her level, so it looks like characters going through the whole growing up management thing gives them way more attribute points than a normal character. So she'd presumably be a better overall character.
Also I kinda like the idea of someone honourless but clever growing up and seeing how the Khan constantly screws her family over, and deciding she's Khan now.
It's going to take a long time for her to reach 18 though

All the fantasy mods for Crusader Kings and Total War and Bannerlord are way more interesting than the actual games, even when I don't really care about the setting they use. Those mods are always the most popular and basically the first big ones to be made, so why aren't there any full games released with that premise?

Mount and Blade needs better morale mechanics. Is that something they fixed in Bannerlord? Seriously why are these small groups of bandits agreeing to fight to the death against an army 10x their number instead of surrendering to be taken prisoner.
Even in active combat enemies don’t flee when they’re getting their shit kicked. Last Days of the Third Age actually does make it so enemies will route if they’re getting smoked but it seems like it should’ve been something in native.

all that's not to say that bannerlord is a bad game or that it's dead by any means, but that it just can't viably pull in the enormous community of prior games because, despite being a very similar game, it just doesn't run on as many machines
and that's not normally a huge issue when your game's primary audience has always been mainstream gamers, but bannerlord now has to navigate the implications of being adopted by players who are less accepting of jank (and bannerlord, of course, remains very janky)
