What if Imran Khan is disqualified plus Godfather: Shaheen Sehbai THE PTI LEADER suddenly dropped a cat in a cage full of rats. When Imran Khan said he was ready to be disqualified on any pretext, provided the Supreme Court-named Godfather & Company were also thrown out, he surprised many. But a lot more, in fact, a majority, was pleased and praised him. Why? Nobody wants Imran Khan to be out of politics or out of sight. But almost everyone, minus some of course, wants the corrupt politicians, looters and plunderers of the past many years to be thrown out into the dust bin. No one in the past had the courage to try and score this monumental goal. Whether anyone likes it or not, the military establishment of the past was the chief culprit in bringing back these discredited but shrewd politicians when they had practically been thrown out and were almost helpless. Previous military leaders acted only in their personal interest of staying in power and maintaining the status quo so these leaders were again thrust on the nation. But triggered by Panama Leaks and after a committed fight by Imran Khan to bring corruption back as the main focus of national politics, these leaders have come to the point where they have to account for their sins of the past. In the process, and to hit back and get even, the Nawaz camp seems to have no strategy but to attack Imran Khan. That is why every loudmouth of the party is provided all government support and backing, worth millions, to come out every day and shout vulgarities at Imran. So far they have not convinced many. The role of the judiciary was also critical in the past in keeping these politicians afloat. Judgments are on record and how the judges were influenced (briefcases taken to Quetta by a judge) or how these judges were then rewarded, are part of recorded history. But today the judiciary is trying to stand up and be counted as independent and not under the influence of any crook, blackmailer or a money peddler. Unconfirmed reports of big offers to SC judges and JIT members are already afloat but no one has yet fallen in the trap, not in any visible way. The hullaballoo about three SC judges showing leniency to Nawaz when two had already declared him guilty has so far been disproved as the JIT formed by the three judges has performed to the satisfaction of the people. At least so far. Thus a scenario is emerging in which the Godfather could find himself cornered and trapped in a mouse cage, with a big cat inside. Fearing a catastrophe, the Nawaz camp has decided to take Imran Khan down as well, through the Bani Gala house case. And to harass, bribe or intimidate the judges, a subtle campaign has been lodged to attack their credentials and conduct. Nehal Hashmi took it a step forward by directly following the camp policy. He is paying a price he would have expected, in the short run. To be honest, there is no comparison between Nawaz and Imran cases but politics is a shameless, heartless and merciless sport. On the face of it, Imran is being asked to provide the money trail of funds for his house which was a transaction/loan/deal/ gift or whatever, between a husband and a wife, totally a private affair involving private money, most of which has already been declared by him in his accounts/assets. His deal is being equated to billions of dollars of properties, made by the Sharif family when in power, taken out of Pakistan, call it money laundering, Havala, gifts of minor children to still active parents, or whatever. This is the accountability of public funds and not of a private husband-wife transaction. Still Imran says he is ready to face the music, get disqualified or sidelined, for whatever period of time the judges may deem it necessary. What he wants is that the Godfather should also go down. It would be a huge victory. To disqualify Nawaz Sharif, the judges have to take a monumental step to restore their damaged credibility, regain respect and act as an honest arbiter of truth and facts. Many legs may shake but this time they have strong crutches to depend on. Firstly the military establishment is totally neutral and not intervening. So no blame will come on Pindi if the judges act against Nawaz. Secondkly Pindi has also assured all that the law will be allowed to take its course and thirdly the media will ensure that nobody gets away with foul play. So lets get to the larger picture. Nawaz gets the kick and Imran also gets a punch. Two major players are pushed out of the arena. A third, Altaf Bhai has already been sidelined. So who is left? Of course Mr Asif Ali Bricks Zardari. Can anyone imagine a political playing field in which Nawaz, Altaf and Imran are shown the red card but Mr Bricks is allowed to run and score goals? Impossible. So with Dr Asim Hussain, Uzair Baloch, Sharjeel Memon and many others already in the safe houses or on the ECL, Mr Zardari, with dozens of off-shore companies, proven cases in US banks and even US Congress, video-recorded evidence of stealing documents in Geneva etc etc, will be, and must be, shown the red card as well. That leaves a completely clean slate. Probably that is what is needed and that is where we are headed for. We need clean players, new players and honest players. Of all of these discarded ones, Imran will still have the chance to bounce back.
