honestly i'm glad you're starting this conversation, because i too feel so strongly about how low quality and harmful kid's content have become these days, especially after i learned about elsagate, and the exploitative nature of various channels on youtube — family vloggers, mr. beast type clickbaiters, ai generated slop, storytime channels with inappropriate channels, gore channels acting as a trojan horse and masquerading as content for children, etc... it's a sickening phenomenon.

there are also other things i can think of in regards to exploiting children's entertainment:

how extremely predatory and manipulative mobile ads have become

the cocomelon obsession!! i know cocomelon just seems like some dumb random cartoon but it's honestly really wild and a TERRIBLE source of dopamine addiction to kids, savantics made a good video on it and they analysed just how overstimulating cocomelon is (it apparently has more animation frames per second than ARCANE)

the youtube algorithm and the adpocalypse, in my opinion, play a HUGE ROLE in shaping the internet and content into what it is today. clickbait, flashy thumbnails, extreme content, faked videos, misinformation, propaganda, guilt tripping audiences into buying and buying and buying, etc. like creators are so focused on pleasing the algorithm, that it has become an ingrained mindset in many of their minds to care about monetisation and adsense and getting views

this sort of mindset leads to the brain rot slop we see everywhere;

kids are a great audience if you want the most profit because they're easy to manipulate into forming parasocial relationships with you! and this is why advertising to children is illegal but who cares about that anymore!

walmart apparently created their own roblox game (again, a full commercial) and they kept on referring to the CHILD audiences of roblox as "young shoppers"

mr. beast, fuck that guy. i think his style of extremely flashy and colourful thumbnails

and just so much more, i think the issues with youtube, television, streaming, and other similar phenomena are all interconnected and influence one another into becoming worse (like when influencers get their own shows), and just. this reeks of late stage capitalistic hell

also, like... yeah, tv IS shooting themselves in the foot

"don't fix what isn't broken" and YET

there's been an increased phenomenon of encouraging betting and gambling WHILE you're watching sports

reality shows / game shows have become so... mind numbing? like the pepsi wild cherry spin slots game or this game where you just have to name objects they show you in pictures on the screen

drew gooden made some really great videos discussing issues with tv and streaming services/netflix (one, two, three, four)

also, shows getting cancelled just one or two seasons in, not allowing them to ever develop fully

oh god and the point you make about there being too few shows on tv now because!! that really explains why nick feels so empty in recent times!! 5-8 SHOWS VS 20 IS WILDDD

it's really great that the ban led to the flourish of urdu dubbing!! i'll be honest i didn't really enjoy watching bangla dubbed cartoons growing up, and people here still don't speak in proper bangla, but i am now curious about the world of dubbed shows and dubbing voice actors

i get what you mean because pakistani dramas are super popular here! at least among the people i know, and so are turkish dramas. there's also k-dramas and bangla natoks, of course. i really have to personally check what television is really like in bangladesh because i often get ads for bangladeshi streaming sites which seem promising, but frankly i think the only people who watch cable tv these days are the elderly 😭 uncle-aunties love their facebook, most people our age stick to streaming, and lord protect the kids honestly

we see it all the time, "I wish Cartoon Network still did City promos", "I wish Disney Channel still existed", "I wish Jetix was still around", "I wish YTV would 'keep it weird' again", "I wish CITV didn't die", "I wish POGO was like it used to be in the 2000s"

What was it about these channels that drew you to them? Why as older teens and adults, with streaming legal or otherwise available to us, do we still wish for scheduled programming?
