Prominent Pakistani rights activist found dead in Toronto | Human Rights News
Police say they have found the body of a Pakistani dissident living in the Canadian city of Toronto on refugee status, with rights group Amnesty International and others calling for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The body of 37-year-old Karima Mehrab Baloch was found on Monday evening, although no immediate cause of death was given by police, said Lateef Johar Baloch, a rights activist.
“I am with her family I was there when police came to us and confirmed that they found her body,” Lateef Baloch told Al Jazeera by telephone.
“It is confirmed that she is dead, and her body was found from water near Toronto.”
A Toronto police spokesperson confirmed the body of a 37-year-old woman had been located on Monday.
“It is currently being investigated as a non-criminal death and there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances,” said Caroline de Kloet, a police media relations officer.
Karima had earlier been reported missing by Toronto police, having last been seen at about 3pm local time (20:00 GMT) on Sunday in the Bay Street and Queens Quay West area, according to a police statement.
Rights groups and Pakistani rights activists, particularly those living on asylum status in foreign countries, have called for a thorough investigation into her death, alleging it may have been carried out by state actors.
Karima was a prominent ethnic Baloch rights activist, having led the Baloch Student Organisation’s Azad faction (BSO-A), an organisation at the forefront of the political movement calling for the independence of Pakistan’s ethnic Baloch areas and documenting alleged human rights violations there.
Baloch activists, particularly those calling for independence, have been subject for years to a sustained and documented campaign of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, local and international rights groups say.
Located in Pakistan’s southwest, Balochistan is the country’s largest but least populated province and is rich in minerals and other resources.
Baloch rights groups have long decried what they term Pakistan’s extractive policy towards the region, mining it for resources but leaving it languishing at the bottom of most socioeconomic indicators in the South Asian country.
For more than a decade, armed ethnic Baloch groups have also been fighting a separatist war against Pakistani security forces, killing many Pakistani security forces and civilians in attacks they say are aimed at achieving independence.
Pakistan’s military routinely denies allegations of rights abuses, saying most of the region’s “missing people” are members of armed groups who fled their homes voluntarily.
Karima was one of the most prominent voices calling for justice for political activists who were allegedly abducted or killed by Pakistan’s intelligence services. She took over the leadership of the BSO-A after the disappearance of its previous head, Zahid Baloch, in 2014.
In 2016, the BBC named her as one of its 100 “inspirational and influential women” for that year, citing her activism.
Facing threats to her life, she fled to Canada and was granted permanent political asylum in 2017.
Pattern of violence
“Recently, her husband told me that he got some threats regarding her ,” said Lateef Baloch, who is not related to Karima but is a close friend and associate.
“People that sent messages to him saying that they will send a ‘gift’ to Karima by Christmas or something like this.”
A screenshot of those threatening messages was shared with Al Jazeera.
On Tuesday, international rights organisation Amnesty International called for a thorough investigation into the rights activist’s death.
“The death of activist Karima Baloch in Toronto, Canada is deeply shocking and must be immediately and effectively investigated,” the group said in a tweet.
“The perpetrators must be brought to justice without recourse to the death penalty.”
Karima’s is the second death of a Pakistani dissident under mysterious circumstances this year.
On March 2, Sajid Hussain, a Pakistani activist and journalist who often wrote on human rights violations in Balochistan and was living in self-imposed exile in Sweden, was reported missing.
His body was found almost two months later in a river near the Swedish town of Uppsala, authorities said.
Police did not investigate Hussain’s death as a crime, but media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders said there was “a strong possibility that he was killed in connection with his work as a journalist”.
In February, rights activist and critic of Pakistan’s powerful military Ahmed Waqass Goraya was physically attacked outside his home in Rotterdam, where he lives in self-imposed exile.
Pakistani activists living in exile say the deaths and attacks come after a sustained increase in the number of threats they have faced in the last year.
Taha Siddiqui, a prominent Pakistani journalist known for his strident criticism of the military, fled the country in 2018 after he escaped an attempted abduction. He was granted political asylum in France later that year.
Siddiqui told Al Jazeera he had received multiple warnings from the United States and French intelligence agencies since he moved to the French capital Paris regarding threats to his life, and documented at least three incidents of what he deemed to be surveillance of his activities there.
“In Pakistan, we are seeing that there has been a growing oppression and crackdown and suppression of independent voices,” he said.
“Now that they’ve done it at home, it seems they are replicating that model and expanding this model globally.”

Baloch Missing Persons – Written By: Kamal Baloch
sangar publication
- 27 Jan, 2020 at 8:13 am
Baloch Missing Persons – It is a long story which contains forceful disappearances from Balochistan. The victims are political and social activists, doctors, teachers, farmers, and even women and children. The question arises who is behind this heinous crime of the paradoxical disappearances from Balochistan. Its answer most often comes during the press conferences of the victimized families. Yes sure, responsible is the intelligence agencies and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) which are under control of Pakistani army. So they violate United Nations Human Rights and Pakistan’s constitution which states that a person when arrested, should be produced in front of a court within 24 hours. It reveals the involvement of Pakistani machinery in this barbarism.
Thousands of Baloch are missing. The list of missing persons is increasing day by day. After approving the Army Act bill in Pakistani assemblies, Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal) has began propaganda to own the credit of releasing some of missing persons. Along with them, newly formed Balochistan Awami Party BAP is also there to take its credit too. But no party from them dares to ask why those persons are kidnapped and kept in a dungeon for a long period.
The voice of missing persons came into limelight in 2009 when Mama Qadeer, the Vice Chairman of Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) started a hunger strike in front of the Quetta Press Club. Later he did the same in front of Karachi and Islamabad Press Clubs. To highlight the issue, Mama Qadeer led an on foot long March from Quetta to Karachi and then Karachi to Islamabad. They made history by walking 2500 KM against disappearances in Balochistan. This issue is protested in the United Nations’ forums too.
In 2012, the fact-finding mission of UNO visited the capital city of Balochistan, Quetta where VBMP handed over the lists of the missing persons from Balochistan. After the 2018 elections, BNP supported Imran Khan’s PTI in the formation of the federal government and handed over them a list of missing persons and demanded their release after this support. But despite releasing the forceful disappearance is continued unabated.
Now as the people of Balochistan are looking forward to the agreement of BNP and PTI. However again the question arises that who will ask the mighty army? Who dares to talk about secret torture cells where Baloch are being kept for decades. In spite of being one of the burning issues, the media has kept silence on it – the media blackout. Political parties are equally contributing to the issue by keeping it in less consideration.
On the other hand, the army itself refuses of keeping the Baloch people and other nationalities in dungeons. The army portrays them to be in Afghanistan and other places. In Balochistan, for the freedom-seeking Baloch people the political activities are banned at all. So Baloch nationalist parties should keep it in their responsibility to highlight the issue abroad to get the missing persons’ case be heard. As it is being noticed that some of the people are getting released but on the other hand the abduction and forceful disappearance are continued.

Protesters shouted slogans with placards in their hands that read: "Pakistan carrying genocide" and "stop abducting Baloch women and children."
Last week, a Washington-based organisation urged international bodies to help set free an abducted Baloch leader's wife and daughter from the captivity of Pakistani security forces.
Washington-based American Friends of Balochistan (AFB) has appealed to the United Nations, US State Department, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, UNICEF, International Service for Human Rights and other international bodies to step in to free four women and three babies from the illegal captivity of the Pakistan security forces.

We condemns non-recovery of Zakir Majeed and the incident of burning VBMP camp- BNM
12'June 2019
(Current Balochistan)
The central spokesman of Baloch National Movement in his statement strongly condemned the incident of setting Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) camp ablazed. The Voice for Baloch Missing Person (VBMP) camp was burnt down at night of 8th June. On this day a decade was completed to the enforced disappearance of Zakir Majeed, the central leader of Baloch Student Organisation Azad (BSO-AZAD). The selection of this particular day by intelligence agencies of Pakistan was a clear message that Pakistan would suppress all those voices which are raised democratically against human rights violations. It is an attempt of Pakistan to suppress the voice of victim families of missing persons. Such nefarious attempts would expose the lies and ghastly face of Pakistan.
He added, "Ten years are completed to the abduction of Zakir Majeed, during this period his family has been going through mental agony like others thousands of the victim families. The movement of victim families and their peaceful demonstrations have continuously been conducted for the last ten years. Farzana Majeed, sister of missing Zakir Majeed Baloch participated the long march from Quetta to Islamabad which was organized by Voice For Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP). The Pakistani media didn’t only cover the massive and historical long march but also the participants of the long March were inhumanly attacked several times."
He further added," A decade is completed to the camp of Voice For Baloch Missing Persons. In this duration, Sabeen Mehmood who raised her voice for missing persons was martyred and renowned journalist Hamid Mir, who spoke once for the missing persons was also targeted."
The central spokesman of Baloch National Movement assumed that the behavior of common masses of Pakistan during this historical March was the reflection of the state policy of maintaining a relationship of oppressor and oppressed. They remain totally oblivious to the pains of the Baloch nation which is continuing till date. Such situations prove that not only we are an occupied nation and territory but also it is a proof that Balochistan and Pakistan are skies away from one another.
He furthermore added that the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons' camp has completed a decade and Mama Qadeer Baloch has created a history of continuously sitting at hunger strike camp. If he had recorded his demonstrations done in the civilized world then surely he would have been honored and rewarded for his long struggle but in Pakistan, one can easily gauge the position of law and humanity where even democratic process and peaceful struggle are not allowed. That’s why the camp for the Voice For Baloch Missing Person is repeatedly under attack. Last year, in December, the victim families of Baloch missing persons' demonstration was stopped. It is a slap on the face of a so-called independent judiciary and so-called independent media because judiciary does not take notice and media doesn’t dare to report the realities.
The spokesperson said that such reactions are expected from Pakistan. We don’t hope anything from Pakistan. It’s the responsibility of international human rights organizations to take notice of Pakistani barbarities. The entire world is aware of these facts that Voice For Baloch Missing Persons is a human rights organization who desires to recover the enforced disappeared people but Pakistan has decided to crush the struggle of the human rights organization through military power.

We will thwart all attempts to ban political & organizational functions in Educational institution in Balochistan. BSO Azad Chairman, Sohrab Baloch
Baloch Students Organization Azad Chairman Sohrab Baloch in a tweet criticizes the government imposed ban on political and Organizational functions in educational institution of Balochistan.
"The government imposed ban on political and organizational functions in educational institutions of Balochistan is in fact a way of preventing students from supporting the independence movement", he said.
“The government should keep in mind that even their 2013 ban imposed on BSO did not keep the organisation from operating unmarred. In fact, BSO has been running undercover since 2005 and shall continue to do so. The current ban exposes the government's own fragile position
in Balochistan”, he added.
"Ban on @BSO__AZAD is to counteract the political movement & the current ban is to make students indecisive & we will not allow this".

*BSO journey of decades..BSO Azad*
November 26, 2018
*(Current Balochistan)*
Bso—- journey of decades
Students are the seeds of a nation being earthed for the bright future of a nation to grow into the firm roots of an ideology. In modren world the Youth has been the major Source of nation economy that‘s why Indonesia,China and other countries brought universities in their great concerned to make it easier for students to cover all the econmical and technical works. So it is clear for a slaved nation that the students must be their priorty that they Should know about Aspects of slavery which would bring them at the level where their thoughts would be associated with questions that how to get rid of this slavery.Baloch nation have been raised Voice against slavery from the day of occupation and till now the youth has been struggling despite of facing persistent hard situation in differents eras. To unite the nation against slavery students became the part of Baloch struggle in 60’s and started working on the plateform of Baloch students Educational organisation. Then the word educational extracted and the Well known organisation Baloch students organisation was brought into being on 26th of nov 1967. BSO has completed 51 years and during this journey of decades this organisation has devoted thousands of leaders in the movement of freedom. the countless sacrifices by the leaders and workers Of BSO Azad will be always remembered in Golden Words of history.Specially in these two decades where Killing, abductions, torturing; found ineffective to stop them but the “ Divide and rule”. Today on this day we should remember all the Propaganda being used to break us,all the time when we became part of dirty polices and became the cause of our disintegration. Remembering History means to learn from your mistakes, remembering those reasons which might clear us more toward our mission .
Here the following points are being
describe which were the main cause of our Collapse , can again divide us unfortunately if we wouldn’t work on them. When 1st time BSO disunited into Hayye and anti sardar group the reason was the support of backhanded Sardar nationalist by leaders of BSO. Again when this leader ship changed in 1974 , both groups BSO Awami( anti sardar) and hayye group got united and a new chapter started, this unity brought the BSO at higher levels, till 1986 but after a grand council session again BSO divided in two groups one side leaded by Kahor khan ( BSO sohb)and the other side By Dr Yaseen Baloch and this time the reason was lacking of trust upon each others leaderships and qualities. With the start of new century leaders ship of BSO thought about the external influences which always broke them, at that time BSO was divided into istar, mengal, mehrab aman, nadir quddus atc, so they decided to free up the organisation from external influences and favored a new direction of struggle with the new name of BSO Azad. BSO azad lead the students towards the direction of Baloch cause and that time every Baloch student participated in struggle, although other broken wings of BSO was woking under the other parties but their full support was with Azad following a rejoin and finally in 2006 they joined hands, and arranged council session. But again for the sake of power this unity didn’t stayed longer, once again pocket organisations opposed the decisions and broke the unity. now there are 4 existing wings of BSO , Azad, pajjar, nazriati, mengal, but what they have been doing, where the cause has gone towards. Standing for student rights of a slave nation is a joke within itself.Until and unless you are slave, leave the students ,even your high grade officer can’t get their rights. Every baloch born with hate for enemy and love for nation but what they need is a guidline. We need to be united for the nation who is occupied from decades and now need a supervision for their main cause, they need us, they need those who are not zehri , mengal or gichki, they need balochs, they need those who don’t need power , name or fame, they need those joined hands which would work against slavery. So be a part knowledges struggling and victory, be a part of BSO azad.

*Bring my brother to the court if he’s a criminal”,* *_Seema Baloch_*
November 2, 2018
From news desk of *(The Balochistan Post)* brought to you by *(Current Balochistan)*
If Shabeer Baloch has committed any crime then bring him to the court of law, sister appealed
According to details received by The Balochistan Post, Seema Baloch held a press conference at Quetta Press Club on Thursday about her missing brother Shabeer Baloch.
Shabeer Baloch is a student and a Human Rights activist affiliated with a student organization, Baloch Students Organisation-Azad *(BSO-A)*
BSO-A is a student organization struggling for student rights and also supports the ideology of independence of Balochistan, due to which the organization was banned by the Pakistani government in 2013.
Seema Baloch in the press conference said that two years ago her brother Shabeer Baloch was abducted on 4th Oct 2016 in a raid by Pakistani security forces from Goarkop area of Turbat.
“After that, I spend most days of my life in front of press clubs, courts and in the offices of Rights organizations” She stated.
Seema Baloch in her press conference said that she had tried many times to file an FIR in police stations but they rejected to file Shabeer’s case. She further said that she had filed a petition in court and submitted her brother’s case to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Asian Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International where they demanded the government of Pakistan for the immediate release of Shabeer Baloch but still after two years her brother is missing.
She added that if Shabeer Baloch had committed any crime they should bring him before the court but keeping him in detention and torturing the family is a violation of the very basic human rights.
She hoped that the media, civil society and the judiciary would play their due role to recover her brother.
Balochistan is plagued by the enforced disappearances of Baloch youth and activists. However, recent instances of ‘women and children abductions’ have also been reported.
International campaign groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International accuse Pakistani security forces as the perpetrators of ‘illegal abductions in Balochistan’.

Release Shabir Baloch
Author: Tawarish Baloch
Shabir Baloch is a student and a Human Rights activist affiliated with a peaceful student organization BSO-A to disseminate awareness among students. But being a student in Balochistan is one of the biggest crime and you have to pay great price for it, Pakistani army and its sponsored organisations have been targeting BSO and its activists because they have been raising awareness about history, culture and tradition. They have always chanted slogans for Baloch rights.
Since its formation BSO has been never compromised with Baloch prosperity and development. Some Sardars (tribal heads) and parliamentarians tried their best to demolish the ideology of the organisation in order to turn it a pocket organization for their interests. But it was impossible because the vision was clear to the Baloch students and they were already fully aware of their history. They have cleared their minds that only freedom will bring a new dawn for them as it has been snatched by Pakistani army at the gun point.
When Pakistani state realised that such tactics will not stop the Baloch activists from their struggle then the army and security agencies started kill and dump policy in Balochistan. During the government of former president Zardari, the state targeted the highly cherished characters of Baloch society specially the teachers, professors, doctors etc. Baloch leaders including Ghulam Muhammad the ex-chairman of Baloch National Movement (BNM), Lala Munir a central committee member of BNM Waja Sher Mohammad a central leader of Baloch Republican Party. This policy continues this date and has been intensified with each day.
The activists of BSO also became one of the main targets of Pakistani forces because of its role to raise awareness amongst Baloch youth. BSO-A was educating the youth about slavery and regarding the state brutalities. They were also trying to unite the Baloch youth on a Single platform. For these crimes, the Vice Chairman of BSO-A Zakir Majeed Baloch was abducted by the Pakistani security agencies on gunpoint in 2009 and is missing till this date. After that hundreds of BSO activists were killed and abducted. The state’s brutal barbarism and atrocities on BSO still continues. Last year on 15 November the central secretary general of BSO Ezzat Baloch was abducted along with two central committee members Hassam Baloch and Naseer Baloch and a member of BNM Rafiq Baloch from Karachi. There is no clue about their whereabouts till date.
Similarly Shabir Baloch, who is one of BSO Azad’s top leader and the central Information Secretary, was illegally abducted by Pakistani security forces during a massive operation in Gurkop Balochistan along with nine other innocent people on 4th October 2016. After few days other abductees were released but Shabir is missing even after two years.
Shabir’s family has highlighted the issue through social media campaigns and registered FIRs but still no progress has been made. His sister Seema Baloch is struggling till today and has passed many of his days and night on roads protesting and demanding release of his brother. She has knocked very door and approach many human rights bodies in a bid to save the life of his innocent brother, who has been detained by Pakistani secret services without any crime. Seema has even been appealing the Supreme Court of Pakistan play their role against Shabir Baloch’s abduction but unfortunately Pakistani courts are helpless.
In Balochistan courts have no any role because all the authority is in the hands of Pakistani agencies. From parliaments to education system, the appointed jobs to criminal attacks all function under the supervision of Agencies. Since the occupation of Balochistan by Pakistani forces the agencies have been perpetually making policies to counter the movement in Balochistan. The parliament and other political parties are just dummies that dance at the orders of Pakistani secret services and military.
Today, Shabir will complete two years in Pakistani dungeons, where he is being brutally tortured. His organisation and family members have no clue regarding his wellbeing. From the detention of Pakistani forces, only few people have been able to make it out alive they have narrated conditions of medieval torture.
Abducting a students and detaining them without any crime is also a violation of international laws. However, international community has failed to take notice of crimes Pakistani agencies have been committing since decades in Balochistan. No steps have been taken to stop the war crimes and crimes against humanity in Balochistan.
International communities, student’s organization and their leadership, human rights activists, social and human rights campaigners should play their due role to save Shabir Baloch and other Baloch activists from Pakistani secret cells. As a human rights defenders, it is their duty to save the lives of innocent people from the state barbarism.

*State Policies against Baluch National Liberation Movement*
Author: *Dostain Baloch*
The Baluch National Liberation Movement, despite multiple odds, has made the state a patient of paranoia, which is the reason that state conducts military operation indiscriminately against innocent Baluch children, women and elders, and loots and sets ablaze civilian homes in the military-operation-hit-areas. Because the state knows that the Baluch’s fifth attempt to regain its independence has gained strength from all required-aspects, which are needed for a successful national liberation movement in the modern world of 21st century.
The ideology of Baluch National Liberation Movement is protected by political mass parties and the Baloch students’ organisation. As Baluch National Movement (BNM) and Baloch Republican Party (BRP) are struggling to strengthen the movement politically among the Baluch masses of every class, and Baloch Students Origination – Azad (BSO-A) is educating Baluch students and youth about the liberation movement and working as a basic institution for building future leadership for Baluch nation.
For countering the political front of Baluch, the state has emerged its financed political mass parties—which are National Party (NP), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)—in order to divert the attention of Baluch masses from Baloch National Liberation Movement, and to indulge the masses in fabricated issues.
JUI has been made functional in entire Baluchistan through the madressa network (seminary network) which targets youth particularly and masses generally through religious education in madressas.
JI operates particularly in the Jhalawan area of Baluchistan. Similar, NP is also quite active in entire Baluchistan. The above mentioned pro-state political parties are directly lined up in the first queue to counter the Baloch National Liberation Movement.
The reaming pro-parliamentarian parties, Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Baluchistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A), are indirectly assisting the state by diverging the message of the Baloch National Liberation Movement for the personal interests of the party leadership, because everyone knows that parliamentarian politics is neither the solution to the Baluch issue nor it had done anything for the collective interest of Baluch nation in last 70 years.
In contrast, these pro-parliamentarian parties betrayed the Baluch nation since the beginning, and became the cause of prolonging the state occupation. As a proof, we can see the sectors of education and health in Baluchistan only, which do not even fulfil the basic perquisites of an adequate education or health infrastructure. These sectors have been wilfully kept backward as per wishes of these parties. Because a state wants to prolong its occupation via destructing the education and heath sectors of the occupied nation, and same case has been applied in Baluchistan.
On the other hand, the Baluch armed organisations—Baluchistan Liberation Front (BLF), Baluch Republican Army (BRA), Baluch Liberation Army (BLA) and others—are struggling to protect the ideology of the Baloch National Liberation Movement through military means, because the enemy is well equipped and is doing genocide of Baluch nation with the force of arms using means and tactics.
In order to counter the Baluch armed organisations, state is trying to counter the Baloch National Liberation Movement through Pakistan Army, its intelligence agencies; Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), and other state-backed proxies; the local death squads and religious extremists/sectarian armed organisations like Islamic State (IS), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and its factions and Taliban. But, despite many odds, the Baluch armed organisations are protecting their homeland successfully.
The Baluch’s fifth attempt to regain its independence is strongly lined up from all fronts, political; mass parties and students’ organisation, and the armed organisation. This is the reason that state has become a patient of paranoia because it knows that it is not possible to crush any national movement with such multilayer protective mechanismS.
Strengthening Baluch political, mass and students’ parties and organisation, and armed organisation is to strengthen the Baloch National Liberation Movement, which is the future of the Baluch nation. The Baluch nation should have faith in itself that the victory is their’s, because no power has ever won the war against any occupied nation in the world history, whether that was America against Cuba, China against Vietnam and France against Algeria. Ultimately the occupied nations are destined to win the war of their independence. The fact is that Pakistan Army might defeat another state army, but it can not defeat a nation.
Now it is the responsibility of every Baluch individual, specially educated youth, to take part in the Baloch National Liberation Movement in order to counter every policy of state against the movement, because it is only organisations and parties that can counter the state policies, not individuals. The fifth attempt to regain independence of Balochistan has completed its 17 years due to active and effective role of Baluch national parties and organisations. Therefore, being more politicised means being more strong politically, so every Baluch individual, men and women, boys and girls, should educate themselves politically by joining the Baluch political mass parties and students’ organisation, and surely future will be of the Baluch nation.

Twitter suspends multiple Baloch accounts
August 24, 2018
Baloch users of Twitter face ‘clampdown’ as many accounts of Baloch activists, leaders and organisations have been partially restricted or fully suspended.
Twitter took the action against many accounts, including some famous handles, on Thursday night causing uproar among other Baloch tweeps.
The clampdown comes only days after Pakistan’s telecom authority threatened to ban Twitter altogether in Pakistan if it does not comply with the directives to block objectionable content.
No details of the objectionable content were provided when the ‘final warning’ to Twitter was given. However, it now appears Pakistan was referring to Baloch users active on Twitter.
The Balochistan Post (TBP) has learnt that many Baloch accounts were also given warnings or had to recover their accounts after following a process to provide additional security details and phone numbers in last few days.
TBP itself become a victim of the clampdown and had to recover its handles multiple times. TBP is one of the only, if not the only, independent media networks in Balochistan, where an information black hole exists due to suppression of independent journalism.
Scores of journalists have been killed or gone missing in Balochistan since early 2000s. According to Amnesty International (AI) more than a dozen journalists have been killed in Balochistan for doing their jobs since 2008. AI also considers the province as the hardest place in the country for human rights researchers to operate.
Since early 2011, scores of Baloch journalists, activists and organisations have been using Twitter to report freely about current situation in Balochistan. Many of the activists use pseudo names to hide their identity due to security concerns.
Suspended Accounts:
Some of the famous accounts that were suspended or partially restricted include but are not limited to the following:
@BNMovement_: Balochistan’s largest peaceful political mass party that supports the idea of an independent Balochistan.
@ChairmanKhalil: Official Twitter handle for Chairman Khalil Baloch, the Chairman of Baloch National Movement (BNM).
@BalochNatFront: Baloch National Front is an alliance between BNM and peaceful student party Baloch Students Organisation – Azad (BSO-A).
@DrAllahNizar: Official Twitter handle of Balochistan’s most famous Baloch leader. Dr Nizar is founder of BSO-A but currently heads Balochistan’s most active armed group Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF).
Accounts of armed groups BLF and Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) were fully suspended, whereas, accounts of many political activists were either suspended or partially restricted. Few of the accounts have since been recovered.
Uproar among Baloch Twitter users:
Many Baloch Twitter users and others have been strongly protesting against the clampdown since last night, calling the act an unjustified suppression of freedom of speech.
@KarlosZurutuza: An international reporter tweeted: “Pakistani pressure makes Twitter suspend accounts of #Baloch political parties and prominent leaders. This is one of the very few windows to break an outrageous media blackout. #Balochistan”
@BalaachMarri, an active Twitter user tweeted: “Outrageous: @Twitter succumbs to Pakistani pressure, shuts down major #Balochistan related accounts. The persecuted Baloch people now have no right to tweet their grievances.”
@Pirdhan_Baloch, an active Twitter user said: “By shutting down Baloch political activist and pro-Balochistan accounts @Twitter is supporting Pakistan’s attempt to curb information about ongoing Pakistan’s war crimes in Balochistan. Dear @TwitterSupport Be the voice of the voiceless”
@FaizBaloch: another active Twitter user condemned the suspension and said: “RIP Freedom of Expression! @Twitter shuts down several accounts of #Baloch activists and political organizations on behest of fascist state of #Pakistan. Twitter was the only medium of information for the people of #Balochistan, which is widely known as ‘Information black hole’.”
@HakeemWadhela: a political activist and organizer of BNM in London tweeted: “Dear @Twitter Baloch liberation struggle can’t be suppressed. Even if you suspend all our accounts, but no body can stop the Baloch freedom fighters in battle fields or the Baloch political activists on the streets. #StruggleTillVictory”
@MMATalpur: a renowned columnist tweeted: “#UnjustAction
Baloch Voices are being Suppressed even by #Twitter; Baloch are used to curbs by #Pakistan.”
@Sohaib_Baluch: A member of BNM tweeted: “The voiceless Baloch who found a limited voice on Twitter do not have it anymore as Twitter suspends handles of many Baloch activists, leaders and organisations.”
@Niaz_Zehri: A member of BNM and former leader of BSO-A said: “Media is black out in #Balochistan by the Pakistani military. Social media is the only tool to highlight war crimes and human rights violations from the affected areas, but its sad to see that @Twitter is following the path of Pakistan and suppressing the voice of Baloch nation.”
@SikandarQambar: Another member of BNM and former leader of BSO-A said: “All baloch should strongly condemn @twitter for blocking the twitter handles of the most popular baloch political party @BNMovement and other organisations and leaders.
#Balochistan”
