2019 Bajaj Qute Review: First Drive
Tumblr media
After seven long years of controversy and debate, Bajaj has finally gotten the approval to launch the Qute – India’s first quadricycle. We take it for a spin to find out what all the fuss is about.
Innovation and advancement have always been at the core of everything that Bajaj does as an automotive brand. And a quick look at its history is enough to prove that. From partnering with Kawasaki and introducing DTS-i & Triple Spark, to bringing KTM into India, Bajaj has always excelled in taking the game to the next level. But, like most things in the world, it hasn’t always been easy. But, despite various obstacles, the Chakan-based manufacturer has managed to evolve into a formidable force in the Indian automotive space. The Qute, if nothing else, is a testament to this resolve.
First showcased in 2012 as the RE60 concept, the Qute, although near production-ready, wasn’t allowed to be launched citing safety concerns. Interestingly, the vehicle was given the green light in the European Union and received the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval certification.

Bajaj to launch electric scooters soon
New Delhi: Having established a global presence in the motorcycle market, Bajaj Auto is planning a comeback in the scooter segment and will soon launch an electric scooter in the Indian market, Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj said here on Monday.
He added that the company was satisfied with its performance in terms of exports and was now planning to shift its energy and attention towards increasing its share in the domestic market.
The announcement came as the company kicked off its new publicity campaign to redefine the Bajaj brand’s identity as “The World’s Favourite Indian” to mark its dramatic transition from a domestic scooter maker to a global motorcycle powerhouse.
Amid speculation about the launch of an electric scooter on Monday, the MD of India’s leading automobile company said: “The launch of the electric scooter will not happen today, but it will happen soon.”
However, Bajaj did not divulge any details of the scooter.
He added that after doing well overseas and in the three-wheeler segment, the main focus of the company’s energy and attention in the near future was now shifting towards having the same domination in the domestic motorcycle market.
“Our share in the domestic market had grown by 6-7 per cent in the last nine months and is now around 21-22 per cent,” he said, adding that the new campaign would be used to drive the domestic sales further by pushing the idea that “if the whole world is buying Bajaj, why not you?”.
Bajaj Auto’s executive director Rakesh Sharma added that the Qute quadricycle, first unveiled in 2012, will hit the roads as early as March.
Quadricycles are four-wheelers with less power and lower maximum speed than conventional small cars.
With a presence in over 70 countries around the world, Bajaj has grown to become India’s top motorcycle exporter with 40 per cent of the company’s revenue coming from international markets.
“Our international performance is validation of our strategy of focus and differentiation. Our unwavering commitment towards building the best motorcycles in the world through design, technology, quality and customer satisfaction have made us a truly global brand,” Rajiv Bajaj said at the event organised to launch the company’s new publicity campaign.
“Bajaj brand is not only ‘The World’s Favourite Indian’, but also perhaps the most illustrious ambassador of the Make in India initiative of the Indian government,” he added.
The company said that the new brand identity, which would mark a transition from the iconic “Hamara Bajaj”, would be communicated through a powerful marketing campaign featuring TV, outdoor, print and digital media.
The retail showrooms of Bajaj Auto motorcycles and commercial vehicles will also undergo a transformation with new signage and branding in line with the message of “The World’s Favourite Indian”, the company said.

Rajiv Bajaj is ready to shake up the auto sector with his 'anti-car'
Latest Updates - M. N. & Associates - Forget Nano, this is going to be India's smallest 'car'. With the government now allowing personal use of quadricycle, it can emerge as an alternative to enter-level cars. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified the insertion of quadricycle as a non-transport vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. A quadricycle is a vehicle of the size of a three-wheeler but with four-tyres and is fully covered like a car. It has an engine like that of a three-wheeler. This makes it a cheap and safe mode of transport for last-mile connectivity too. In June this year, the government had approved quadricycle as a new category of vehicle to be allowed to run on Indian roads. The government had issued the final notification on the standards for quadricycle, such as its weight, emission and safety features. The happiest man would be Rajiv Bajaj, the managing director of Bajaj Auto, the only Indian company that manufactures quadricycles. Bajaj Auto unveiled its quadricycle in 2012 and later named it as Qute. It could not be launched in India because industry bodies went to the Supreme Court seeking a bar on the vehicle that wasn’t recognised by the road transport and highways ministry due to safety concerns. With the lack of policy clarity in India, the company started exporting the Qute. The vehicle has a light 216 cc engine and weighs less than 400 kg and is likely to be priced below Rs 1.5 lakh, ET reported in February. It can run at top speed of 70 km. Bajaj will have to make only small tweaks for the non-transport version of the Qute. It is likely to be launched in India in February next year.In 2017, peeved at hurdles being faced by his company to launch its quadricycle in India, Rajiv Bajaj had said stifling of innovation by regulatory agencies will turn 'Made in India' into 'Mad in India'. "If your innovation in the country depends on the Government approval or the judicial process, it will not be a case of 'Made in India', but 'Mad in India'. After five years, we are still waiting for permission to sell our four- wheeler in the country," he said. Stating that the quadricycle was being sold across countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America, Bajaj wondered why a vehicle which was cleaner, fuel-efficient, safer and whose benefits were as "obvious as daylight", was facing troubles. "This is the only country that has not given us permission to sell this vehicles. Because for some reason it thinks if four-wheeler is worse, let people continue on three- wheeler," Bajaj said. With the Qute, Bajaj Auto — which calls itself an "anti-car" company — is expected to shake up entry-level car segment. After government showed the willingness to approve quadricycles in February, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors too got active to be part of the new mobility solution for the last-mile connectivity. Now quadricycle will become even more attractive to carmakers as it has been permitted for personal use. Mahindra showcased a quadricycle concept at the Auto Expo 2018 while Tata Motors, which was averse in the past, started studying an entry into the segment. Mahindra’s quadricycle project, codenamed C101, has not moved at the pace of other projects. But with the government approval for transport use in February and personal use now, it is likely to gather speed. Mahindra managing director Pawan Goenka, hinting at the company’s plan to launch a quadricycle, had told ET in February that a majority of the concepts showcased at Auto Expo 2018 would hit the market in the next two-three years.Tata Motors MD Guenter Butschek had said that the company was studying the quadricycle segment, but clarified that it was not part of his priority list right now. The company’s former MD, Karl Slym, had opposed the move by the government to come out with a quadricycle policy in 2012-13. Chartered Accountant For consultng. Contact Us: http://bit.ly/bombay-ca

Bajaj Auto’s Qute will finally be made available for sale next month, with the company already having started deliveries of the quadricycle to dealers.
Bajaj Auto dealers in Kerala and in the North East have already placed orders for the four-wheeler as it is ‘technically’ possible to offer the Qute for sale in these markets, the company said.
“Technically Kerala is allowed to retail it so the initial plan is to send out 35-40 vehicles to all the dealerships so that registration process can be completed. But I would say that retails in the North-East and Kerala should commence next month,” said Kevin D’sa, President (Finance), Bajaj Auto.
Qute, which is a four-wheeler, comes under a new category of vehicle. It is not classified as a personal vehicle and can be used only for commercial purposes. This means that the vehicle will need clearance from individual state governments. As of now, only Kerala and the North Eastern states have given their go-ahead.
Early last month, the central government cleared the policy to permit quadricycles for commercial use, after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to look into the matter. Several public interest litigations (PILs) were filed by various entities to stall the commercial launch of the quadricycle.
Unable to sell the vehicle in India, Bajaj started exporting the Qute to Latin America, Europe and Africa in 2015. The vehicle is powered by a five-speed, 216cc engine that develops a peak power of 13.2 PS and has a maximum speed of 70 kmph. It can seat three passengers and a driver.
Bajaj has created a capacity of 60,000 units per year for the Qute at its manufacturing facility in Aurangabad.
The quadricycle is part of a new category of vehicles recognized by the government a few years ago. Several companies including TVS Motor Company and Tata Motors had opposed the government’s proposal to allow quadricycles to be sold in the market on the grounds that the vehicle does not meet crash safety norms.
