via Today Bharat nbsp; The TRS has historically not performed well in Hyderabad, but hopes to turn its luck around this time. A decade ago, if someone were to claim that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), then a party largely confined to the northern part of the state, would be a major player in Hyderabad city, it would have been immediately dismissed. Yet today in 2018, with days left to go to the polls, the TRS is one of the key players in some of the most important constituencies in Hyderabad. The Greater Hyderabad region, which mainly consists of constituencies within the confines of the city's Outer Ring Road (ORR) and some on the outskirts, spread over several districts, has political conversations of its own. The region is known for its large Muslim population in old city, a bastion of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and settlers, mainly from Andhra Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Jurisdiction The region includes some key constituencies like Ibrahimpatnam, LB Nagar, Maheshwaram, Rajendranagar in Rangareddy district, with more than 2 crore voters, Medchal, Malkajgiri, Quthbullapur, Kukatpally and Uppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, with another 2 crore voters and even seats like Patancheru in Sangareddy district with 27 lakh votes. However, the bulk of constituencies are in Hyderabad district, which include Musheerabad, Malakpet, Amberpet, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Sanath Nagar, Nampalli. Karwan, Goshamahal, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura, Bahadurpura, Secunderabad and Secunderabad (Cantonment), with a total of 3.96 crore voters. While the old city area that includes most parts of Hyderabad district are mostly held by AIMIM. The fights here are primarily between AIMIM and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and in some seats, the Congress and the BJP. With the Prajakutami being forged in the state- which includes the Congress, the TDP, Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and CPI- the grand alliance and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) are going head to head in many crucial constituencies in the city. Which way will the settlers swing? In 2014, the TRS only won four seats in the region, something which it acknowledges itself. This has often been attributed to the presence of several lakh people from Andhra, who reside in Hyderabad, and are often the deciding factor in some seats. Knowing what's at stake, the TRS is taking no chances as it has deployed its key campaigner and the KCR's son himself, KT Rama Rao, who has built an image as an IT Minister over the past four years. He has addressed several meetings across the city, from Abids, Mailardevpally, Nampally, Kondapur, Madhapur and Serilingampally to name a few. "The TRS wants to show the people that we are developing the entire state. But we have said repeatedly in the past that Hyderabad will be a global city in the future and we are working in this direction," says TRS MLC and senior leader Sreenivas Reddy. "In the 2014 election, out of 24, we won only in 4 seats. However, immediately after that, in 2016, we won 90 corporator seats in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election (GHMC). So we are not interested in only short-term goals and we are developing the city as well as the state," he added. While the Congress and the TDP are banking on the region historically voting in their favour, the TRS has repeatedly pointed out to the result of the GHMC election was in their favour. However, analysts say that there is more than meets the eye. "Not only for Telangana, but Hyderabad is one of the most developed cities in India and whoever controls the city obviously wields a lot of power. The challenge to the TRS is if it can repeat the magic of the 2016 results," says Telakapalli Ravi, a veteran journalist and political analyst. Ravi also points out to the fact that the TRS has remained historically weak in Hyderabad, barely even making an attempt to contest in the 2009 elections. "You can't compare 2018 with 2014 or 2016, as the BJP and TDP were together at the time. Now, the Telugu Desam is with the Congress and has also lost a considerable amount of clout as legislators defected to the TRS," he adds. Analysts argue that KCR and KTR indulge in a 'balancing act' as the Chief Minister continues to seek votes in rural areas by highlighting the insider versus outsider narrative while his son appeals to the voters in the city on grounds of inclusivity and tolerance. "It all boils down to the nature of the settlers. Often, they may not just go with their roots or origin alone. A true settler will vote for stability and continuity to be there. That works more than other factors," Ravi adds. In-fighting and big battles Even as seat sharing talks were underway, there was dissent within the TRS and also within parties of the alliance over contentious constituencies like Jubilee Hills, Serlingampally, Rajendranagar, LB Nagar, Qutubullapur and Maheshwaram. Take Serlingampally for example, which includes the entire IT hub of Hyderabad and several tall rises. Sitting MLA Arekapudi Gandhi is up against Mahakutamirsquo;s TDP candidate Bhavya Anand Prasad in one of the richest constituencies in the state. In Rajendranagar, former minister Sabitha Indra Reddyrsquo;s son, Patolla Karthik Reddy's supporters were livid after the seat he vied for was allotted to TDPrsquo;s Ganesh Renukuntla. Congress workers even went to the extent of vandalising the party office at Shamshabad. Shamshabad mandal is where Hyderabadrsquo;s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is situated. There are also many seats with big battles. Sabitha, who bagged the Maheshwaram ticket for the Congress, will be going up against TRS' Teegala Krishna Reddy. Khairatabad is another hotly contested seat with Danam Nagender, former Greater Hyderabad Congress president bagging the TRS ticket. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Spokesperson Sravan Dasoju is his rival in the constituency. The statersquo;s present Secretariat next to Tank Bund and the Governorrsquo;s office, Raj Bhavan come under the jurisdiction of the sitting MLA besides key areas in the city like Somajiguda, Punjagutta and parts of Banjara Hills and Himayatnagar. In Kukatpally, which is in the heart of the city, Padma Rao, who was in charge of the constituency, was denied a ticket as the TRS picked a defector from the TDP, Madhavaram Krishnarao. Following this, he sent his resignation to KCR. In a bid to take advantage of the factions in the TRS, the TDP has fielded Nandamuri Suhasini, the granddaughter of the party's founder and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao. The constituency also has several voters who have their roots in the state neighbouring Telangana and have settled in the city. nbsp;

via Today Bharat nbsp; The police said that the AIMIM workers violated guidelines and permissions that were granted by the concerned Returning Officer, by conducting a bike rally. Party workers of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were booked by the Hyderabad police for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), while one of the party leaders was filing his nomination with the Election Commission on Thursday. The police said that the AIMIM workers violated guidelines and permissions that were granted by the concerned Returning Officer, by conducting a bike rally. Another case was booked after party workers flew a drone over their rally, without taking permission from the concerned authorities. "We have received a complaint from Election Commission flying squad team stating that on November 15, AIMIM candidate Ahmed Balala came to the Returning Officer's office to file his nomination with a bike rally. We have held one person in connection with the case, and are investigating the matter," Sultan Bazar Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chetana told ANI. In September, the AIMIM released their first list of candidates for the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections. The party, with its core support base in the old city area of Hyderabad, will be contesting in seven seats. All seven sitting MLAs were renominated with a shuffle only in two seats, that of Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri. The party said that Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, the present MLA from Yakutpura constituency, will now contest from Charminar while AIMIM General Secretary and present Charminar legislator Syed Ahmed Pasha, will contest from Yakutpura. Akbaruddin Owaisi, the MLA from Chandrayangutta, who has won the constituency four consecutive times, will continue to contest from his stronghold. Mohammad Moazam Khan, who has been holding the post of Bahadurpura MLA since 2004, will contest from the same seat. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, who won the Malakpet seat successfully in 2009 and 2014, will contest again from the same seat. Jaffer Hussain Meraj, the former deputy mayor of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 2009 and presently an MLA, will continue to contest from Nampally. Kausar Mohiuddin the MLA from Karwan will contest in the constituency again this year. The party is also expected to contest from seats outside of its stronghold, in constituencies like Jubilee Hills, Musheerabad and Rajendranagar in Hyderabad besides areas like Nizamabad Urban in Telangana. Telangana is scheduled to go to the polls on December 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 11. nbsp;

via Today Bharat nbsp; From demanding sewing machines to pensions for widows and access to clean drinking water, women presented a range of petitions to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. The Shahjahan Function Hall at Talab Katta in Hyderabad was packed on Sunday afternoon as women from across the old city area made a beeline to meet All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and pour out their woes. The meet was women-only and is part of the party's plans to reach out to more women in the city. Taking to Twitter on Saturday, the Hyderabad MP had said, "This election, Majlis is organizing women-only events in each constituency. These events allow me and the party candidate to listen to the problems of women voters and work harder for them. " "It is our sincere effort, I promise you, to have at least three such meetings every year. We will talk to them, listen to them and see what can be done. Good ideas can come from such meetings," he said later on the social media platform. The meeting at Talab Katta under Yakutpura constituency was preceded by similar meetings at Gauhar Gulshan Function Hall, Moghalpura, which comes under the Charminar constituency and other meetings in the constituencies of Karwan, Bahadurpura and Malakpet. nbsp; Attendees hopeful If there was one thing evident, many of those who had gathered, were hopeful. "I am sure he will listen to us and solve our problems. It is with that hope that I came here. He is more accessible than any other MP I have seen," says Rubina Begum, as she stands in the queue with relevant documents to represent her case to get a sewing machine sanctioned. Owaisi delivered a short speech reminding the women about all that the Telangana government and the AIMIM had done for them over the past few years, and asked them to vote for the 'kite' (party symbol) on December 7. The AIMIM chief then opened the floor to listen to the problems of the attendees. The issues of the women ranged from petitions for sewing machines, which were promised to be distributed after the elections to pensions for widows. There were also complaints about bad roads, access to clean drinking water and other issues. Some women also complained about the allotment of 2BHK houses under the Telangana government's housing scheme, while others asked for help with medical treatment and admission in schools. There was also slight chaos as several women rushed to the stage, each trying to get their complaint heard, forcing Owaisirsquo;s team to indulge in crowd control several times during the meeting. Many women were asked to come to Darussalam, the party headquarters, to solve their issues. It is a long-standing tradition for all AIMIM MLAs and corporators to assemble at the party headquarters every morning, except on Fridays, for a 'durbar', where they listen to complaints from constituents. Some of those who had gathered were also skeptical. "I have been doing the rounds of Darussalam for the last two months for a 2BHK house, but it has not moved forward. I have been asked to go from one official to another and I'm tired of this. However, I have no choice and I have to keep trying. I'm hoping that at least if I bring it directly to Owaisi sir's notice, I might get help," says Zainab. An increase in women voters Another reason the AIMIM seems to be holding these special meets is the apparent increase in the number of women voters in Hyderabad. According to the 2011 census, Hyderabad district had 954 females per 1,000 males, compared to 933 in the 2001 Census. Official data also showed that the participation of female workers went up drastically from 9.9% in the 2001 Census to 19.1% in the 2011 Census. The literacy rate among women in constituencies of old city also hovered around 80% in the 2011 Census. nbsp; Statistics show that women are giving stiff competition to men and turning up to vote, especially in the seven constituencies in old city. As of the electoral rolls published by the Election Commission on October 12, there were 10,09,211 male voters registered under the constituencies of Malakpet, Nampally, Karwan, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura and Bahadurpura. The number of female voters registered under these seven constituencies were 8,13,162. While in constituencies like Charminar, there were only 92,643 women voters who had registered against the 1,04,794 men, in seats like Chandrayanguta, there are 1,42,737 women registered to vote compared to 1,48,219 men. nbsp; In another testament to this, close to a 100 men stood outside the function hall where the event was taking place on Sunday, waiting for their wives to return. Many said that the women in their households had insisted on attending the meeting as they wanted to fight for their cause. nbsp; However, AIMIM leaders say that it has nothing to do with the numbers and is purely a move to listen to one half of the population and their grievances. "The idea is that of Mr Owaisi. Women constitute 50% of the voters and their concerns have to be addressed. It is a unique idea because not many political parties think that they should hold women-only meets. We're glad to have taken the initiative and the response has been good," AIMIM MLC and senior leader Syed Hasan Jafri told TNM. "We're planning to hold these meeting in all the Assembly segments where we are contesting and we are sincere about organising such events," he added. nbsp; How the AIMIM is reaching out to female voters in Hyd with all-women meets From demanding sewing machines to pensions for widows and access to clean drinking water, women presented a range of petitions to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
