J.T. Walsh Was Hollywood's Ultimate Go-To Villain
By Padraig Cotter
Published Aug 12, 2019
The late, great J.T. Walsh was one of Hollywood's best villains. Actors try to avoid typecasting in their careers since they want to play different types of characters. Performers such as Meryl Streep or Daniel Day-Lewis managed to mostly avoid this, jumping from different genres and roles with relative ease. Producers like to make safe bets, however, so if an actor does a great job with one type of character, that's what they tend to get offered. Following the success of Die Hard, for instance, Bruce Willis spent around a decade playing blue-collar action heroes, while occasionally branching out to other genres like The Sixth Sense.
The offer of a nice paycheque plays a part too, though certain performers refuse to be defined this way. Alan Rickman also received a breakout role thanks to Die Hard's Hans Gruber, but after playing a couple of villains in movies like Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, he decided to mostly steer clear of bad guy parts later in his career. While J.T. Walsh never became a leading man, he carved a distinct niche for himself playing villainous roles in a number of big movies.
J.T. Walsh's first big break was playing the role of Sgt. Major Dickerson in Good Morning, Vietnam, opposite Robin Williams. Dickerson was a petty, vindictive character and Walsh excelled at making him easy to loathe. He would build up a selection of similar roles in the following years, including a sinister movie executive in The Big Picture and a slimy Alderman in Backdraft.
He received acclaim for a supporting appearance in A Few Good Men, and his string of villains would continue with thrillers Red Rock West opposite Nicolas Cage and Needful Things, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Walsh would also collaborate with Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) several times, including playing an opportunist politician in Executive Decision and the intense thriller Breakdown. The latter project would give Walsh arguably one of his best parts, as the calculating kidnapper of Russell's wife.
J.T. Walsh also made notable TV appearances, including an episode of The X-Files and a major role in sci-fi series Dark Skies. His final roles saw him share the screen with Samuel L. Jackson in thriller The Negotiator and comedy-drama Pleasantville with Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man). Tragically, the actor died at the age of 54 from a heart attack in 1998, with his final performances dedicated to his memory. Jack Nicholson would also dedicate his Academy Award for As Good As It Gets to Walsh's memory.
J.T. Walsh crafted a career filled with memorable performances and made a big impression with even small roles, such as his appearance in Sling Blade. He was one of Hollywood's great villains, and his presence is still missed.

Universal Studios Japan announced this week they’re closing The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride. The last day will be January 22, 2024. This makes me a little blue because I’ve had so many fun experiences with that attraction down through the years. But I suppose with Disney owning the rights to Spidey it became inevitable. What surprised me, though, is their decision not to reopen Terminator 2: 3D and Backdraft. The park suspended those attractions because of COVID-19 but I believed they’d eventually open them again.
Rumor has it something Pokemon related will take over the Spider-Man spot but I wonder what they can do with those other two buildings. If I had to speculate wildly with the popularity of their Sailor Moon 4D special events something with those characters adapting the material they’ve already bought and paid for would slot nicely into the Cyberdyne Systems building. They currently use the Backdraft firehouse as the Killer Cutie zombies home base during Halloween Horror Nights. It’s a much smaller venue so I have no idea what they could do with that one.
Well. Changes aren’t permanent but change is as Geddy Lee of Rush sang. It’s good to refresh the park every so often. As for me I’m going to ride Spider-Man as many times as possible come this Halloween season as a way of saying so long to an old friend.
And please enjoy these photos I’ve snapped there over the years. The first one is from 2014 and the most recents are from 2019 and 2022. Plus Cyberdyne.

Hey! I’m not sure if you would have an answer for this, but in my wip an explosion causes a two story building to fall down with my characters inside it. They have magic so they survive, but some are on the first floor and some are on the second. I’ve been trying to search to figure out how to describe the wreckage/how the different levels collapse into each other, but I have no leads. Even any specific search terms would help. Thanks!
Researching Building Destroyed By Fire
I would try:
inside a building destroyed by fire
inside a collapsed building
inside a collapsed burned building
two-story building destroyed by fire
tour of building destroyed by fire
what happens when a building collapses in a fire
aftermath of building destroyed by fire
pictures inside collapsed building
pictures inside building collapsed by fire
Another option would be to see if you can stream movies or TV shows about firefighters to look for inspiration. Firefighters would probably say these depictions aren’t terribly accurate, but unless you’re writing your story exclusively for firefighters, you don’t have to worry about 100% accuracy, just like Hollywood doesn’t. Reasonably accurate is fair enough.
Some to look for:
Movies
Backdraft (1991) Ladder 49 (2004) Burn (2012) Backdraft 2 (2019)
TV Shows
Firehouse USA: Boston Chicago Fire Station 19 Rescue Me The Smoke
You may also be able to find clips on YouTube.
I hope that helps!

HBO Max New Releases: October 2021
https://ift.tt/39ZMSFm
The fall is usually the domain of television. September and October are the months in which networks (and increasingly some streamers) debut all their new series. With its list of new releases for October 2021, however, HBO Max has decided that fall works just fine for new movies as well.
HBO Max’s new offerings this month are highlighted by two enormous Warner Bros. film releases. The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark opens things up on Oct. 1. The movie is getting a theatrical release as well but you can certainly just watch it via streaming to make Sopranos creator and film purist David Chase mad. Next up is the sprawling sci-fi epic Dune on Oct. 22. It’s long been thought that a faithful and suitably enormous Dune adaptation was impossible. Now it’s almost time to see if director Denis Villenueve pulled it off.

Even if the movies are the big blockbusters here, HBO Max isn’t letting its TV offerings go to waste. Arguably HBO’s biggest running drama, Succession, returns for a long-awaited third season on Oct. 17. Also mixed in to the streamer’s TV offerings are docuseries like 15 Minutes of Shame (Oct. 7) and What Happened, Brittany Murphy? (Oct. 15).
October will also be a good month for movie fans looking to check out some recent heavy hitters without buying a ticket. It: Chapter Two (Oct. 10), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (Oct. 21), and In the Heights (Oct. 28) all arrive this month.

It happens in an instant, Galo gaping like an idiot while Lio presses forward to defend against the perceived threat, the weapon sparkling but not burning as it kisses Galo's throat.
Galo sees the moment Lio realizes who he is, that he’s not a threat, his eyes going wide, lips parting. Truthfully, he's not sure whether Lio’s shocked at the appearance of his weapon or that he’d drawn it against Galo. Both, maybe.
“What!” Galo shouts for lack of anything else, staring at the blade that should be impossible, they’d burnt the Earth and closed the rift, that shouldn’t be possible.
