Travel Quang Nam and explore the beauty of remote places
Hello everybody, I moved from Hanoi to Hoi An to live since 2014. I work in the tourism industry and I'm quite nomadic, travel everywhere. And after many years living in Hoi An I have learnt more about Quang Nam province, I see that this province not only has Hoi An ancient town and My Son sanctuary but also many other tourist attractions stretching from the East Sea to the border with Laos in Tay Giang, Nam Giang…
Tumblr media
Many Vietnamese people mistake that Hoi An belongs to Da Nang city and most of them come to Da Nang and then rush to Hoi An for a short time and take photos, so they think that tourism in Quang Nam province and Hoi An is not attractive. But actually we need more time to visit, enjoy and learn about the landscape, culture and people of Quang Nam province. It is truly a "Heritage Green Area" with not only world and Vietnamese heritage sites, diverse natural landscapes but also rich indigenous values of the Cham, Co Tu, Ca Dong ethnic groups… Whatever Vietnam tourism has, Quang Nam has it all. Every time I leave home, I have more interesting discoveries like Quang Nam is one of the cradles of the national language, is the hometown of former Hanoi governor Hoang Dieu, and is the land of Ngu Phung Te Phi (5 people who won the grand exam in 1898 Mau Tuat lunar year)…
Quang Nam beach tourism: 125km coastline from Thong Nhat/ Ha My/ An Bang/ Tan Thanh/ Cua Dai/ Cua Khe/ Binh Minh/ Tam Thanh/ Tam Hai beaches: In addition to beautiful beaches, there are many other tourist attractions: Cua Khe fish sauce village - Tam Thanh painting village - Tam Tien fish market, - Ban Than rock rapids - Phu Son tunnel pagoda in Nui Thanh district.
River tourism: Quang Nam especially has two rivers running close and parallel to the coast, Co Co and Truong Giang, with very beautiful landscapes. In addition, mother river Thu Bon flows from Hoi An up to Duy Xuyen, Nong Son to Kem Da Dung island and the basin at the foot of Ngoc Linh mountain range.
Route from Hoi An to Duy Xuyen district to Nong Son round way to Hoi An via Que Son: Tra hieu ecological village - Tra Ly lotus pond - Cham capital Tra Kieu (Sa Huynh museum, Champa/ Tra Kieu Holy Mother where the Virgin Mary appeared/My Son Sanctuary) - Vinh Trinh Massacre Remnants - Dai Binh fruit tree village - Kem Da Dung island - East Truong Son road/ elephant conservation area - An Viem hot water spring - Le pass - Hoi An. Go 1 or 2, 3 days, sleep in Dai Binh village.
Route from Hoi An to Tam Ky - Phu Ninh lake - Loc Yen ancient village: from Hoi An, cross Cua Dai bridge, follow Vo Chi Cong beach, the most beautiful road in the Central region connecting Hoi An - Tam Ky, across the Hoiana tourism complex (resort, golf, casino…), through Vinwonder, through vast white sand to visit Ky Anh Tunnel - Tam Thanh Painting Village - Monument of Mother Thu - Huong Tra Sua Village - Phu Ninh Lake, the largest lake in the Central region - Huynh Thuc Khang memorial area - Loc Yen ancient village, Tien river, Lo Thung (Tien Canh commune, Tien Phuoc district). If you have more time, you can explore the Bong Mieu gold mine from the French period and the scenic Ham Ho and White Waterfall in Tam Lanh commune, Phu Ninh district. From here, you can also continue to the Nam/Bac Tra My districts.
Route from Hoi An - Tam Ky - North Tra My - South Tra My districts along National Highway 40B: From the ancient village of Loc Yen, continue up to Bac Tra My district with tourist attractions of Hon Ba Mountain - Muong Village - Nuoc Oa tourist site, Song Tranh hydroelectric power plant. Going further, you will reach Nam Tra My highland district with 3-storey waterfall, 5-storey waterfall, Tay Du Ky waterfall - Tac Po cloud hunting spot - Ngoc Linh ginseng market - Long Tuc terraced fields - Ngoc Linh stopover bordering the Tu Mo Rong district, Kon Tum province at an altitude of more than 1500m. What are hidden gems in Vietnam
Vietnam is a country with a wealth of hidden gems that may not be as well-known as its popular tourist destinations. Here are some hidden gems in Vietnam that offer unique and memorable experiences:
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park: Known for its stunning karst landscapes, this national park is home to the world's largest cave systems, including Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. The park is a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
Bac Son Valley: Nestled in the northern mountains, Bac Son Valley is a picturesque area with emerald-green rice fields and traditional stilt houses. The valley offers breathtaking views, especially during the rice harvest season.
Pu Luong Nature Reserve: A less-visited alternative to popular destinations like Sapa, Pu Luong is known for its lush landscapes, terraced rice fields, and traditional Thai ethnic villages. It's a great place for trekking and cultural immersion.
Con Dao Islands: This archipelago, located off the southern coast, is known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and historical significance. The islands were once used as prisons during the French colonial era and the Vietnam War.
Mui Ne Sand Dunes: While Mui Ne is known for its beaches, the red and white sand dunes are lesser-known attractions. The red dunes, in particular, offer a unique landscape, especially during sunrise or sunset.
Tam Coc: Often referred to as the "Halong Bay on land," Tam Coc is a scenic area in Ninh Binh province. Visitors can take a boat ride along the Ngo Dong River, passing through limestone karsts and caves.
Ha Giang Loop: This motorbike route in the northernmost province of Ha Giang offers stunning mountainous landscapes, ethnic minority villages, and the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass. It's a fantastic destination for those seeking adventure and natural beauty.
Cao Bang Province: A less-touristy destination in the north, Cao Bang is known for its dramatic landscapes, including Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia.
Da Nang's Marble Mountains: While not exactly hidden, the Marble Mountains are sometimes overlooked in favor of more popular attractions. These limestone hills are dotted with caves, pagodas, and panoramic views of the coastline.
Bai Xep Beach: Tucked away in the Quy Hoa Valley, Bai Xep is a peaceful fishing village with pristine beaches. It's an ideal spot for those seeking a quiet coastal retreat away from the crowds.

After Samsung's Vietnam mobile phone business declines, the government requires the local chip factory to be built
Tumblr media
【Lansheng Technology Information】According to news on September 4, due to the sharp decline in Samsung’s smartphone shipments in Vietnam and South Korea’s foreign direct investment in Vietnam, the Vietnamese economy has been hit hard. The Vietnamese government has asked Samsung to build a semiconductor factory there.
According to reports, Samsung Vietnam is already a major manufacturing and export base for its smartphones, with half of its production produced in Vietnam, but Counterpoint Research data shows that in the first quarter of this year, shipments of "Made in Vietnam" mobile phones fell by 23.1% year-on-year, leading the "Made in Vietnam" Samsung, which shipped "Made in Vietnam" phones, was the biggest contributor to the decline - Samsung's Vietnam shipments fell by 22.5%.
Separately, Korea International Trade Association data showed South Korean foreign direct investment in Vietnam fell 67.6% year-on-year to US$670 million in the first five months of this year.
Faced with Samsung's lax smartphone business, the Vietnamese government asked Samsung to build a semiconductor factory there.
Statistics show that Samsung is currently the largest foreign investor in Vietnam and has four subsidiaries in Vietnam, namely Samsung Electronics City in Ho Chi Minh City, Samsung Electronics Vietnam and Samsung Display Vietnam in Bac Ninh Province, Samsung Electronics Vietnam Taiyuan in Taiyuan Province, Manufactures smartphones, home appliances, parts, etc.
In the first quarter of this year (2023), the revenues of these four subsidiaries all declined, and SEHC’s revenue fell by 23.3% year-on-year to US$1.15 billion—the largest decline. The total profit of the four Vietnamese subsidiaries was US$1.08 billion— It was down 18.4% year-over-year, with SEVT seeing the biggest decline - down 69.3%.
According to Nikkei Asia, the revenue of Samsung Electronics Vietnam Branch in the second quarter of this year fell by 27.1% compared with the same period last year to 4.3 trillion won. to 447.4 billion won.
Cui Zhouhu, general manager of Samsung (Vietnam), once said that Samsung has invested 20 billion U.S. dollars in Vietnam since 2008 and has invested 20 billion U.S. dollars in Vietnam by 2022. It still plans to invest 1 billion U.S. dollars in Vietnam every year. more than 100,000 workers have created employment opportunities, Samsung factories in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh, and Taiyuan have more than 100,000 managers and employees, and Samsung has 257 Vietnamese suppliers in the global supply chain, with an investment scale of 2.2 The billion-dollar Samsung (Vietnam) Research and Development (R&D) Center has also been put into operation by the end of 2022.
Just in August 2022, according to the Vietnam News Agency, when Samsung Electronics CEO Lu Taiwen met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Fan Mingzheng during his visit, he announced an additional investment of 3.3 billion U.S. dollars in Vietnam to continue to expand its business in Vietnam. Taiyuan Province has tested and produced FC-BGA high-performance semiconductor packaging substrates, and plans to officially start mass production in July 2023.
At that time, in August 2022, it was also reported by Vietnamese media Lao Dong that Samsung planned to start producing chips in Vietnam in mid-2023, expand Vietnam’s semiconductor chip production layout, and was planning the production conditions for wafer trial production. Vietnam's Thai Nguyen factory mass-produces chips, and the Vietnam R&D Center will be the main R&D base of Samsung in Southeast Asia.
The Prime Minister of Vietnam requested that Samsung Electronics research and expand the production of semiconductors, one of the three pillars, in Vietnam. "Samsung has already carried out efficient business in the field of smartphones and home appliances. Semiconductor production will form a closed chain of electronic product production in Vietnam."
It is worth mentioning that according to data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), although from 1988 to the end of May 2023, South Korea was the largest foreign investor in Vietnam with 9,666 projects worth US$81.5 billion, followed by Singapore (3,240 projects, worth US$73.384 billion) and Japan (5091 projects, worth US$69.628 billion), but the latest data show that in the first eight months of this year (2023), Vietnam has attracted more than US$18.1 billion in overall foreign investment, an increase of 8.2% year-on-year, but Capital increase funds fell sharply year-on-year - down 39.7%.

Best Time For Motorbike Touring in Vietnam
Tumblr media
“When is the best time to Vietnam motorbike” is a popular question however it’s not easy to give the correct answer because Vietnam is a long country and most of the area of Vietnam is mountainous so the climate is changeable and different in each parts in the same time. In some places, you can have 4 seasons in just one day. During the rainy season but you may have a whole week without any rain in the day. It may be sunny in one side of the mountain but the other side could be cloudy/foggy or rain.
Based on geographic and climatic conditions, there are 7 different climatic regions in Vietnam: Northwest, Northeast, North Delta (Red revier delta), North Central (North Central Coast), South Central (South Central Coast), Central Highlands, and the South. These seven regions are widely accepted within the Vietnamese climatological community. Generally, these 7 different climatic regions are grouped into 2 main types: The North (includes Northwest, Northeast, North Delta (Red River Delta), North Central (North Central Coast)) which includes all areas north of the Hải Vân Pass and the South (South Central Coast, Central Highlands and the extreme south) which includes all areas south of the Hải Vân Pass. These climatic regions are based on time of rainy season and other climatic elements such as insolation, sunshine, temperature, precipitation, and humidity. The diverse topography, wide range of latitudes (Vietnam spans over 15° of latitude), and influences from the South China Sea lead to climatic conditions varying significantly between regions.

North Vietnam: Spring (from Feb to April) and Autumn (from August – October) must be the best time to tour around North Vietnam by motorbikes. November December is quite cool and dry but could be foggy, January is quite cold in mountains (around 5 degree C). Rain usually in June – July.
+ Northwest Vietnam: The Northwest region includes the provinces of Lai Châu, Sơn La, and Điện Biên. The climate is characterized by cold, dry (little drizzly rain), sunny winters in which hoarfrost is common in many years: Summers are hot and rainy, coinciding with the rainy season although there is a high frequency of hot, dry days caused by westerly winds. Valleys are sheltered from wind, leading to a longer dry season and lower annual rainfall. The dry season usually lasts for 4–5 months. The average annual amount of sunshine hours is 1,800 to 2,000. Owing to diverse terrain and climate in this region, this leads to different types of forests being present.
+ Northeast Vietnam: The Northeast region includes the northern and northeastern provinces: Hà Giang, Phú Thọ, Cao Bang, Lạng Sơn, Bac Kan, Thái Nguyên, and Quảng Ninh… The climate is strongly influenced by the northeast monsoon.  Winters are cold, cloudy (little sunshine) that is characterized by drizzle. The cold comes earlier than other provinces. Summers are hot and rainy that coincide with the rainy season. However, unlike the northwest, dry conditions are rare due to a low frequency of westerly winds. The rainy season usually lasts from May–September although its duration can vary from 4 to 10 months. In the Hoang Lien Son mountains, winters are cold where snowfall and hoarfrost can occasionally occur. These mountains have the highest rainfall in the country. The average annual amount of sunshine hours is 1,400 to 1,700 (source from Wikipedia)
South Vietnam: With almost sunny and hot days year-round, usually rains in the afternoon from May – November but normally quick rain or rain in the late afternoon.
Our answer: We organize motorbike tours in Vietnam in whole year-round and we can say each time of year has pros and cons. As we say, It may rain usually from June – August but it’s just like a quick shower then stop to be sunny again and the pros of this time is that you can see the most beautiful color in the mountain with full of rice terraces and blue sky everyday with rainbow sometimes.
WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL REACTION TO THE COUNTRY?
In one word, terrifying. To me it was a different planet! Flying into Ho Chi Minh City I quickly saw swarms of mopeds, and heard stories of people being robbed or worse.
Needless to say, this kind of put me off to a rocky start on Vietnam motorbike trip.
I think I stayed in my hotel room for at least 24 hours contemplating if we had made the right decision. We even were searching for flights out until I decided that I wasn’t going to let “stories” dictate my trip.
Making the choice to get over my shock and continue with plans to travel from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike was hard, but one of the best I’ve made.
WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF BUYING A MOTORBIKE IN VIETNAM?
Buying a motorbike in Vietnam as a foreigner is illegal, and for good reason. You can apply for a Vietnamese license in advance, but the paperwork is challenging to say the least.
Not to mention the fact you have to leave enough time to actually get approved and receive it. Really though, this is Asia after all so we figured out the easiest solution… Risk it!
When we started our search into buying a motorbike in Vietnam people saw us coming from miles away. All they saw is money, money, money.
Selling was the same because it seemed like all people wanted to do was screw you over as much as they possibly could. They definitely carry the view that all foreigners have to be rich.
Most people buying a motorbike in Vietnam do so with a Vietnamese person they meet and can trust. Either that, or from someone fresh off their own Vietnam motorbike trip with the most beat up piece of crap you can ever imagine.
Everyone claims they have the best piece of machinery you will be able to find. They also have a “blue card” with some random Vietnamese persons name on it. This apparently is the only way you can actually try and prove you own it.
I think if you plan to travel Vietnam by motorbike and try and buy a bike without any knowledge of how they function, or signs of something reliable than you must stupid. If you’re buying a motorbike in Vietnam by yourself from a local without a Vietnamese person to help you better have your wallet chalk full of Dong.
That’s what they want, not Chinese. Boy, the Honda dream really was a dream. For the first 1000 miles at least… After that I thought I would lose my legs from how uncomfortable the seat was!
We only spent money on oil changes (100-200,000 Vietnamese Dong) which was part of our budget to begin with. Not because we needed it, but just for peace of mind.
We also splurged and bought huge pieces of foam that we tied down to the bike every day for padding. After the foam was purchased we really were dreaming.
We got plenty of bizarre looks and trying to explain that we just wanted foam not a seat was super interesting. Luckily, the foam saved my lower half. I truly don’t know if I would have been able to go from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike without it.
There are more people than you think buying a motorbike in Vietnam who want to cruise the countryside. We chatted with a bunch of those people. Some were covered in road rash, broken down, cutting their trips short, and selling their bikes.
It’s not just the motorbike you should worry about. It’s really the fact that you probably don’t encounter these garbage roads and crazy riders in your hometown. I don’t care if you lane split in California, or go from 0 to 60 in seconds in New York City.
There’s no way you’re going to be prepared for this. I think you have to be lucky when you’re buying a motorbike for a trip on the roads you SHOULD be taking. A little luck and knowledge of how motorbike function. Those are key!
We never got pulled over on the Vietnam motorbike route which again is very lucky. I’ve heard so many horror stories about going from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike and vice versa. For foreigners getting pulled over it’s often the choice between bribing an officer or losing your wheels.
For that reason, we always kept two separate bills in our pockets so we didn’t have to reach into our main wallet. One had 200,000 Dong, and one had 500,000. You never know what can happen and we even had a budget for that.
The Honda Dream demanded respect, and most days that’s just what it got. We were always able to convince hotel owners to let us park it inside. This is a very important tip for your own Vietnam motorbike trip because people do get their motorbikes stolen at night.
WAS IT HARD TO SELL YOUR MOTORCYCLE?
We traveled from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike and sold it at the end. It was a close call to say the least. A lot of tourists start South and end in the North, so there is no shortage of motorcycles in Hanoi.
Guess what? Everyone is stressing the same thing. Your trips over and you’re running out of time. If we had ended in Ho Chi Minh City we maybe would have had an easier time selling, but that’s a big maybe.
In one hotel we met a really nice Vietnamese guy who loved our bike and wanted to help us sell it. He helped us set up a Craigslist add in Vietnamese, and also helped me find a SIM card with a number for people to call.
He took Dustin to a place he knew of that bought bikes that were actually worth buying. Come to find out it was basically what Dustin describes as “the Vietnamese mafia.”
These guys gave Dustin a really low offer on the first day, but after our friend argued with them a little that changed. Dustin left and figured if he gave them a day or two they would come around.
