"JUST THE FACTS: “Break. Verb. : to cause to separate into pieces as a result of a blow, shock, or strain. : to open suddenly especially because of pressure from inside. : to interrupt (a continuity, sequence, or course)”
MR MASTER OF RECORDS Sounds like being Black to me.
BROTHER BROWN Was that about poverty? Being broke?
SISTERSISTER Is that what it means to be a woman, Mama? Having to withstand break after break after break after break?
MOTHERMOTHER Yes... This history we carry has always been about the break. "

Do you remember... back in the days when fam used to cypher on the corner, the original performance art, merging lyric and concrete, Black bodies free in the open air, speaking life and creativity into the aether .... this is what it was and always should be, Hip Hop in TRUE FORM

“Generations are fictions. And that’s before we factor in that the Jellybean Man Ronnie Reagan is coming with a batteram to declare war. They will face the double penetration of crack and mandatory sentencing. AIDS will strike with a closed fist. No angles, 90 degree or otherwise, will spare them their fate.”

“What you have now then is the marketing of racialized identities as tools for consumption. And certain racialized bodies and images are associated with hipness, coolness, edginess. So all kinds of youth all over the world are appropriating that style as a way of, sort of, countering authority, stating their rebelliousness, and wanting to be seen as significant.” ― Amalia Mesa-Bains, Homegrown: Engaged Cultural Criticism
“What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture?” - Amandla Sternberg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no possible way to talk about Hip Hop without examining the booming phenomenon of CULTURAL APPROPRIATION. Despite being a genre born from struggle and acting as urban edutainment, a way for the Black and Brown diaspora to not only put pen to paper to voice about things affecting them on a local level, but it was also a way for communities in the West, to know what’s going down in the Boogie Down Bronx and vice versa. Hip Hop was our Talking Drum but now.... we living in a world where rap sells boots, detergents, Reese’s cereal, and there’s no Black or Brown person in sight! Appropriators are licking the pot clean and claiming the recipe as their own! Now, like everything else in Black culture (hair, clothing, food, beauty products, shape) our music can now be validated by your run-of-the-mill White dude. Not only have appropriators yanked the rug from under our feet, they have now framed the rug and put it on display as a creation of their own. Now, Black and Brown people have to seek validation from WHITE people in order to feel like we’ve done it right. 2015 was a major year when it comes to conversations about appropriation, and we must wonder, what will 2016 hold? We still have people justifying the murder of Black and Brown men and women by police officers. We still have people justifying dressing in Blackface. BUT, 2016 is also the first year in quite some time that there are no White artists in any of the Rap categories for the Grammy’s.... are proper props going to be given? Or is it all a show? Please note, there is a difference between sharing and appropriating, we don’t mind leaving a light on as long as you don’t track mud in the house and pull our mortgage loan.

“Black power vs. White Power, ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ vs. ‪#‎AllLivesMatter‬People who post #AllLivesMatter in response to #Blacklivesmatter clearly don’t understand the what the #blacklivesmatter hash tag actually means. In order to really unpack this issue, I feel like we must go back to the idea of Black power vs. White Power. The idea of White power came out of the founding of the Ku Klux Klan during the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War. During Reconstruction, Black people were taking political office and gaining economic power. The white population felt threatened by the success of the free Black and former slave population and turned to violence to dismantle Reconstruction and to “put Blacks in their place.” White power was founded in opposition to Black success, nay, hatred of Black people and the desire to preserve White Supremacy.Black power is not the equivalent of White Power. Black power was founded on the principal of self-determination and self love within a society that systemically and socially oppressed Black people. It was a term used to find some humanity in an inhumane system that was built on our enslavement and inferiority. Black power is about empowering Black people, not hating white people. Not denying White people opportunities or claiming Black superiority. If you contextualize Black Power within a context of White Power, you have missed the mark, completely. The same with #BlackLivesMatter. #BlackLivesMatter was a term established because Black people are being murdered by police and vigilante racists at a rate FAR ABOVE any other group in proportion to population. Black lives are at stake, institutionally and systemically. Klansmen are allowed to be the police, judge and jury and end our lives and the result is always the same: NO INDICTMENT. The message that these murders convey: BLACK LIVES DON’T MATTER. When that 16-year-old rich White kid got drunk and ran over and killed 4 people, he was acquitted because he was white and rich. When a Black woman doesn’t signal when she pulls over, she is beaten, arrested and murdered in her cell. There is no need for a hashtag to affirm White life. The American justice, education and political system does that quite well. Saying #AllLivesMatter in response to #Blacklivesmatter is escape hatch for those who:-Refuse to acknowledge that racism exists because it forces them to position themselves in it. Am I oppressor or oppressed? -Claim neutrality because they don’t want to take a stand -Don’t care about Black lives and believe that Black people are somehow inherently criminal and deserve to be murdered -Do not eat ANYTHING EVER because they value all lives, including the lives of animals and plants (these people would starve to death) -Don’t want to make White people feel uncomfortable and experience some internalized oppression that makes them value White comfort over Black life -Are in denial and can’t bear to accept that their government and/or some White people could commit such horrible deeds -Can’t accept the fact that they too could be victim to the same racist violence as Jordan Davis, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin…The truth is that there is no neutrality in this. Staying silent, as Audre Lorde said, doesn’t protect you. Silence and inactivity is compliance. Neutrality is compliance. Either my life matters to you or it doesn’t. It can’t kinda matter and Sandra Bland is not kinda dead. I challenge all of us to remove the blinders. Look at the world truly for what it is and people for who they are. It is hard to change what you refuse to even acknowledge. #BlackLivesMatter”

Terror is winning. Somehow despite the numbers, despite the graves, despite the essays, classes and protests, despite the river of tears and Black body blood running downstream out of urban communities, despite all this, cops have somehow convinced the public that people are targeting THEM.... HOW? How? Tamir Rice was went from playtime to called home in less than ten seconds. Trayvon stood his ground and got killed for it. Sandra Bland's lane change switched her from present to passed. Mario was just tryna get home and start fresh and now he's in a fresh grave. And now, cops don't even have to have a good excuse. Now, I walk through my life knowing that there is a grave with my name on it, she that pageants and celebrities will be enough to stall the people and switch their attention to everything but the EPIDEMIC of lives lost to cops. It's gotta stop. These numbers are ridiculous. We raise our children's to bow their heads so that ropes can't fit round them. Is it not easy to see, by these numbers alone, that APPARENTLY ALL LIVES DO NOT MATTER because if they did these stats wouldn't exist. I'm tired of my head banging and my heart bursting. I don't want to say not one more name.... #babylonisburningcs #tamirrice #waronthepublic #oscargrant #mariowoods #sandrabland #blacklivesmatter #rekiaboyd #trayvonmartin #toomanynames
