Movie review: Sonakshi Sinha is bold and beautiful in 'Khandaani Shafakhana'

In an industry that revels in churning out stereotypical rom-coms with larger-than-life characters and all the razzmatazz befitting a spectacular musical, it is refreshing to come across a movie like Khandaani Shafakhana that tackles the social stigma surrounding sex and fertility issues in small town India. Directed by debutant filmmaker Shilpi Dasgupta, the movie is centred around a young Punjabi medical representative Babita 'Baby' Bedi who inherits a sex clinic from her uncle Hakim TaraChand (Kulbushan Kharbanda) in the small town of Hoshiyarpur. The will stipulates that Baby will run the clinic for six months before she is allowed to sell it. How she tackles the taboos associated with sex in the conservative Punjabi town and takes charge of her uncle's patients forms the crux of the story. While the movie is beautifully mounted and handles a delicate subject quite sensitively, it is also at times excruciatingly slow. Varun Sharma of Fukrey fame plays Baby's good-for-nothing brother, Bhooshit Bedi and Nadira Babbar plays the long suffering mother. Rapper Badshah makes an appearance as superstar Gabru Gaatak, the clinic's most high profile client and turns in a decent performance- it helps that he plays himself! The movie makes a case for breaking the societal shackles around a topic which is still considered taboo in most Asian families. As such the dialogues and references are pretty bold and in-your-face. Its admirable to see an actress like Sonakshi take on a role that not many mainstream actors would have been comfortable doing. Bollywood movies like Vicky Donor and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan have tackled similar topics, though they were all male-driven. If you enjoy movies that raise awareness about sensitive issues with a heavy dose of humour, you'd love this. Karisma Kapoor continues to favour neutral hues

It’s no secret that white is among Karisma Kapoor’s favourite colours when it comes to clothing. “My love for white came from my grandparents,” she’s told us in the past. “This translated into my Indian wear too, like chikan or mulmul kurtas.”

The movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha. and was the sequel to the movie Tum Bin which released in 2001. Tum Bin 2 was released on 18 November 2016 and had Neha Sharma, Aditya Seal, Kanwaljit Singh, Sonia Balani, Meher Vij, Jaspreet Singh, and Aashim Gulati in the lead role. The original version of this song was sung by the very popular Tigerstyle ( A. S. Burmy and K. S. Burmy ). This version of the song was recreated by Gourov Roshin. The rap part was done by Raftaar. Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha has recently appeared on popular quiz based reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati 11 hosted by Amitabh Bachchan.

The actress graced the hot seat along with entrepreneur Ruma Devi. Ruma Devi was invited on the show as a Karamaveer contestant, who works in an NGO named Grami Vikas Chetna Sansthan in Rajasthan.

Ruma Devi’s NGO is known for providing logistical support to several women artisans in rural areas. She provides employment in embroidery, patchwork and mirror work. In 2018, Ruma was honored with Nari Shakti Puraskar, for her exceptional work and contribution towards women empowerment.

Sonakshi Sinha gets brutally trolled

While Ruma and Sonakshi together managed to win a total of Rs. 12 lakh 50 thousand, one specific question that the two were asked has grabbed everyone’s attention.

During the show, Sonakshi was asked, “According to Ramayana, Hanuman fetched the Sanjeevani Buti (herb) for whom?” She got confused between four options given to her in the game – Sugriva, Lakshmana, Sita, and Rama.

While Ruma did not know the answer to the question, Sonakshi was confused thinking that Sita might be the correct answer. The two, however, decided to use a lifeline and it was the expert advisor who informed Sonakshi and Ruma that Lakshmana was the right answer.
