My top ten Hindi films on Netflix
If you’ve never seen a Hindi film, you’re missing out. Action, romance, comedy, and drama: you can often find them ALL in one of these three-hour films. (OK, not all Hindi films are three hours, but they tend to skew longer than American films, especially the older ones.) If the constant genre-changing doesn’t hold your attention, maybe the singing, dancing, bright costumes and incredible cinematography will. If you’re not sure where to start, check out my recommendations below. Most of these feature strong female characters or have a feminist bent. Here are a few Hindi words to listen for while you’ve got the subtitles on.
pyaar – love, dost – friend, dushman – enemy, zindagi – life
1.) Dangal (2016) – Feminist sports movie, based on a true story. Lead actor and producer Aamir Khan plays Mahavir Phogat, the father of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, two girls from a small town in Haryana who aspire to become professional wrestlers, though the state lacks both structural and social support for female athletes. Their father was a professional wrestler who dreamed of winning Olympic gold for India, and failing that, aspired to have a son that could fulfill his ambitions. But he didn’t have a son. He had one daughter, and then another, and then another, and then another. One day, after the girls get in trouble for beating up some boys in the neighborhood that were bullying them, Dad realizes he may not need a son to have Olympic gold winners in the family. Aamir got most of the praise when this film came out, but all the actresses who played his daughters (Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, and Suhani Bhatnagar) trained super hard for this film, and it shows 100% on screen. Best song: Dangal.
2.) Queen (2014) – Feminist coming-of-age travel film. This film is about a small-town girl that gets dumped on the eve of her wedding and decides to take her honeymoon to Europe alone, even though she’s never been out of India. Along the way, she makes friends with a diverse group of other travelers, sheds some of her more conservative views, and learns to embrace life fearlessly. Best song: Hungama. Second best song: London Thumakda.
3.) PK (2014) – This film was controversial when it came out because it pokes fun at religion, but it’s ultimately about we shouldn’t allow religious differences to divide us. Aamir Khan plays an alien that pays Earth a visit to try and understand human society. Unfortunately for him, there are a lot of rules he has to learn to pass as one of us (even though he looks human). Fortunately for us, that learning process includes a number of hilarious mishaps. Best song: Tharki Chokro.
4.) Dil Dhadkne Do (2015) – Family drama (but not without comedy, action, and romance) starring Priyanka Chopra (who you may recognize from Quantico or Baywatch). The parents in a family of business moguls decide to celebrate their anniversary by taking a ten-day cruise with some of their best frenemies. What could possibly go wrong? Best song: Girls Like to Swing. Second best song: Gallan Goodiyaan.
5.) 2 States (2014) – One of my favorite romantic Hindi films, this rom-com becomes a family drama when college sweethearts Krish and Ananya have to convince their parents to accept their partners. Krish is Punjabi (North Indian) and Ananya is Tamil (South Indian) and their cultures are very different. Will the parents be able to overcome their prejudices around class, color, and culture to accept their children’s partners? Best song: Iski Uski. Second best song: Locha E Ulfat.
6.) Little Things (2016) – This is a series, not a TV show, but I wanted to include it because I love it so much. It’s a super cute portrayal of a relationship between affluent twenty-somethings living in Mumbai. She’s very career-driven and he’s a little less clear on what his goals are, which contributes to some of the relationship conflicts in season one.
7.) Raees – This is a pretty straightforward gangster movie. A boy with strong values but few career options starts making money the best way he knows how: bootlegging liquor in a dry state. He eventually gets rich and powerful enough to scare even cops and politicians, but ultimately gets in over his head. Raju Ban Gaya podcast described this as a rip-off of Narcos, but I feel that’s a little unfair. They also praised the film’s portrayal of a Muslim protagonist. This movie features a fight scene in a butcher’s market, which, if you’re vegetarian like me, you may find a little hard to stomach. Also, some people get murdered. Best song: Laila Main Laila.
8.) Kahaani (2017) – The feminist thriller/murder mystery you didn’t know you needed. Vidya is living in London and very pregnant when her husband, who has traveled to Kolkata for work, goes missing. She travels to India to find him, but the local authorities, who assume he bounced because he couldn’t handle the prospect of fatherhood, are no help. Anyone that tries to help her mysteriously turns up dead. Can she find the killer before he finds her?
9.) Om Shanti Om (2007) – I included this because it’s a classic, and it’s got a lot of the wackiness I think Americans expect from Hindi films. It’s chockfull of references to other Hindi films, so the more you’ve seen, the more you can appreciate it. However, you don’t need to be a Bollywood buff to be able to enjoy this story about reincarnation and karmic comeuppance. It’s also a good introduction to Shah Rukh Khan, one of Hindi films’ leading men, and one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Best song: Deewangi Deewangi.
10.) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019) – This is the first mainstream Bollywood with a lesbian protagonist. (The independent Hindi film Fire portrayed a lesbian relationship in 1996 and it did not go so well.) Ek Ladki starts out as a rom-com and then becomes a family drama. The plot gets a little convoluted between the second and third act, but the chemistry between 90s heartthrobs Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla is a joy to watch. Fun fact: Anil, who plays the protagonists’ father in the film, is the father of lead actress Sonam Kapoor in real life.
These are all on Netflix right now. Not sure how many will be taken down next month.

What Do We Expect From Lock Upp Show
Lock Upp, a Hindi reality show, debuted on 27th February 2022. It is streaming on MX Player and ALT Balaji. The show streams live 24x7 but have hour-long episodes that stream every day from 10-11 pm. The Lock Upp show is a prisoner series that is the brainchild of Ekta Kapoor.
Famous actress Kangana Ranaut who is notable for being fierce, outspoken, and sassy, is hosting the reality show. The Hindi reality show is not the first reality show but has a never-seen-before concept in Indian television and OTT.
The premise of the show revolves around locking up a bunch of controversial celebrities and public figures for 72 days straight and putting them under various tasks and rules to test their resilience. Contestants will have to survive throughout by abiding by the directions of Kangana Ranaut. Here is all you can expect from Lock Upp.
All You Can Expect From Lock Upp
Here is what you can expect from the show:
Fights for basic necessities
In the Lock Upp show, you can expect the contestant crew to fight for basic necessities throughout the entire duration of their stay. Unlike other Hindi reality shows, Lock Upp has already seen the candidates in harsh conditions. In the show, the contestants are seen donning jailer suits behind prison bars overseen by a warden and the host of the show. In the first episode itself, contestants were seen by the audience squabbling and exchanging gossip. The members have had to fight for essential rights like food, warm water, and even innerwear, so much so that they had to organize a hunger strike and protest to get their demands fulfilled. In the further episodes, we can only expect things to get even tenser.
Drama and dark secrets
As the main theme of this Hindi reality show is to put together the most notorious public celebrities behind bars and get their controversies to light, you can expect many twists and turns in the upcoming episodes of the Lock Upp show. Even before the Lock Upp show’s launch, the candidate list had stirred things up. The show features up to 16 candidates – some of whom have sparked some controversy with their behaviours in the past and some who are part of the show to spice things up. The candidate crew include:
Sara Khan
Munawar Faruqui
Nisha Rawal
Poonam Pandey
Shivam Sharma
Karanvir Bohra
Anjali Arora
Siddharth Sharma
Saisha Shinde
Babita Phogat
Payal Rohatgi
Tehseen Ponawalla
Swami Chakrapani
Karan Kundra
Ali Marchant
Brutal but well-deserved eliminations
After twelve thrilling episodes, we saw the elimination of the controversial Swami Chakrapani. Swami was already infamous for his extremist ideologies, which did not sit well with other contestants and the audience, considering the secular spirit of India.
Before joining the show, Swami had declared that non-vegetarians were responsible for spreading the coronavirus and organizing a Gomutra party. As he wasn’t helping his fellow contestants during tasks nor showing any spirit of teamwork, he came under the radar of Kangana. The last straw was during a task for the bottom three contestants where Chakrapani did not show any enthusiasm, which led to his exit from the Lock Upp show.
To Conclude
The Lock Upp show has everyone holding their breaths. Up till now, many of its episodes have surpassed millions of views. The general Indian OTT audience is accepting this Hindi reality show well. Ultimately, in the Lock Upp show, everyone’s dark past will come to the surface, and the audience will judge the truth of it.

Babita Phogat quit from Haryana Sports department due to unavoidable circumstances
Wrestling champion and BJP party leader Babita Phogat resigned from her post of Deputy Director of the state's sports department. It is being speculated that Phogat would contest the by poll for an Assembly seat in Sonipat district next month. Babita was a candidate in the 2019 Haryana assembly election but could not win.
The speculation became more valid when Babita met the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the evening after resigning from her post.
Phogat sent a brief resignation letter to the Secretary of the sports department in which she explained that she was resigning because of unavoidable circumstances.
"I had recently joined as Deputy Director in sports department but due to unavoidable circumstances I may not be able continue with my services," she wrote.
The by poll for the Baroda seat of Sonipat are scheduled on November 3. The seat make a little difference for the BJP party as the party has a total of 40 seats out of the 90-member assembly.
Congress party minister Sri Krishnan Hooda is holding the seat since 2009.
Phogat along with his father Mahavir Phogat joined the BJP party in August last year when the Haryana assembly elections were 3 months away. There is a super hit movie made on the life of the three-time Commonwealth gold and silver medalist, Dangal, starring Aamir Khan.
"I am a very big fan of Narendra Modi. I have been his fan since 2014. He has worked a lot for the country. I think everyone would like to join the BJP," Babita said as she joined the BJP party last year.
She was also a part of a controversy earlier this year when she gave a statement saying that the Coronavirus is linked with a Muslim sect.

Vijender Singh on Babita Phogat: Nadaan hai bachchi, seekh jaayegi, she’s new to politics - other sports
https://www.liveindiatimes.com/vijender-singh-on-babita-phogat-nadaan-hai-bachchi-seekh-jaayegi-shes-new-to-politics-other-sports/
Babita Phogat’s controversial tweet condemning Tablighi Jamaat attendees for spreading Covid-19 doesn’t seem to have gone down well with a lot of people. After Jwala Gutta, boxing champion-politician Vijender Singh spoke against the BJP politician, saying that there was no religion in the world that gives one permission to show enmity towards another.
Talking about it, Singh says, “Nadaan hai bachchi, seekh jaayegi. She is new to politics. The country is run by love, not by hatred and discrimination, and it’s important to gain the right knowledge and understanding of what’s right and wrong.”
Feeling concerned about the rising communal disharmony, Singh, who joined the Indian National Congress in 2019, feels that “Hindu vs Muslim is as dangerous as Coronavirus” and it can only be curbed by the government and politicians if they want. However, he says, “Some people don’t want this. And to top it all, TV news channels create an uproar with the debates. That’s why I’ve stopped watching TV news. For me, Twitter is my source for the news and I only follow verified accounts.”
A bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Singh, 34, was eagerly looking forward to Tokyo Olympics 2020, but he says, “Jaan hai toh jahaan hai. We have to be safe first and prevent it from spreading. The Olympics will happen if not next year then later. But it will not have its charm like before due to the fear this pandemic has created. There might be a dip in the crowd as people would prefer to watch it online or on TV,” he explains.
With tough times ahead, Singh feels that everything will take time — anything between six months to a year — to come back to normal. “Unemployment and hunger will create more havoc than coronavirus and we all need to fight this together by helping each other,” says Singh, who was supposed to be in the UK for the training of his next bout in May, but it got cancelled.
While he’s spending quality time with his family, including sons Arbir (7) and Amrik (11 months) in Delhi, what else is keeping him busy these days? Singh shares, “Ghar ka kaam,” and adds, “I used to think that life is very simple and easy, but to do household chores and to stay at home for this long is not easy. I do make time for myself, read, play games and watch movies. I’m also doing conditioning workout, staying physically and mentally fit and motivated.”

DANGAL FIREWORKS AT THE BOX-OFFICE
With the year coming to an end, it’s time to sit back and recap everything that transpired in the year 2016. Year ends tend to make people nostalgic, creating a strong urge to reminisce on everything that took place in the year. So reminisce and recap is what we shall do. Keeping up with the end of the year tradition we’ll take a quick trip down Bollywood’s memory lane.
As far as movies are concerned Bollywood has had a good year with quite a few great movies hitting the silver screen. It was also a year rattled with controversies, be it the Udta Punjab and the censor board fiasco, or the government’s objection at Pakistani actors working in Hindi movies. But the ups and downs aside Bollywood has done a good job so far, saving the best for the last. Bollywood definitely knows how to leave with a bang, which is what it’s doing with its last release of the year Dangal.
Dangal by far has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year; a fact that was proven by the record breaking ticket sales. The movie features Bollywood’s perfectionist Aamir Khan after a two year hiatus, who was last seen essaying the role of an alien in the box-office hit PK.
A bollywood biographical sports drama movie, Dangal follows the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari who follow their father’s footsteps into the world of wrestling. This isn’t the first Hindi movie to deal with the sport of wrestling. Salman Khan’s Sultan that released earlier this year also dealt with the same topic. But that’s where the similarities between the two movies end. Both are diametrically opposite to each other and share absolutely no similarities beyond their shared topic.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari Dangal takes you deep into the by lanes of rural Haryana. The movie focuses on the struggles of women stepping foot into a world of sports, that’s perceived to belong to men and excelling in it. It throws a light on the sacrifices and hardships that the father daughter trio go through in order to realize their dream of winning a gold medal for the country.
So far Dangal has exceed all expectations, with the movie tickets selling like hot cakes. Actors Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra who play Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumar respectively, Aamir Khan, and the director have received accolades from the Bollywood industry and the audience alike. All in all, there couldn’t have been a better way to end the year.
Summary: The end of the year is near and there’s just one thought on everyone’s mind and no it’s not about the New Year, it’s about Dangal. The most anticipated movie of the year has finally hit the box-office. Starring Amir Khan, this movie has exceeded everyone’s expectations.
