I have camped on your blog today. And I don’t think I need to say it, but I loved seeing unbiased, unfiltered opinions. And I would have continued camping. But I have work tomorrow and rest is required so my lazy girl is out asking this:

a) has your fondness for BTS Changed since you were first exposed to them and when do you think the turning point was?

b) Your bias line is JK, Jimin and Yoongi so I can guess the answer to this but nonetheless, could you rate each members vocal/musical ability and what you particularly like about them?

c) This may come across as a very rude ask but I am genuinely interested in knowing your pov - is there an intended judgement of others on your part when someone/people like certain BTS content or find some members intelligent/praiseworthy? I ask because of some of the takes on your blog about Namjoon’s lyrics. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but he writes a lot of BTS lyrics and the songs have reached a babillion people. Could he do better? Sure. Is he absolutely awful? Maybe not. Are BTS songs cheesy/corny? Maybe. Do people like that content? Maybe they do. I found some of the takes a bit harsh and almost as if you were judging people for liking such content/members and also judging BTS for producing such content. Maybe you weren’t intending to come across as judgemental and I apologise if this offended you in any way.

Thank you for the questions, it really made me think for a bit before answering. I'll take it one by one.

a) Perhaps I've talked about this in other contexts and in other words, but if I am to look back, the "fondness" was certainly more present in the discovery phase. Once that is done and I have all the cards on the table so to speak, I can finally look at it from a different perspective. And that new perspective doesn't have to be a negative one automatically. But some song releases have contributed as well. With Butter, I was still excited up until the release of the song, but then PTD was truly a disappointment in my books. It still is. I know not everyone is willing to recognize, but the pandemic period was really a let down in terms of BTS music (excluding BE and Film Out), especially the hit songs. And if we pay attention to what they say in Festa, it wasn't the most lucrative period for them as well, from an artistic value perspective. And it showed. So, in my case, I had reached that portion of my fandom experience when I didn't have a lot of content and old music left to discover, so I was anchored in a BTS present which failed to deliver. But my curiosity still remained, which is why I made the blog around that period as well. And perhaps familiarity is another factor. I'm so used to see BTS-related stuff on the platforms that I use, that I still haven't reached the point of letting it all behind completely. In the meantime, the fondness comes in small doses from time to time.

b) I will always pick Yoongi from the rapline because I think he's the one with a better flow and lyrics. I don't know if it's because I first got into BTS through one of Yoongi's solo songs or not, but I see him as a rapper that has what it takes and still be successful on a grand scale. Commercial enough, but not a sellout. And there's a reality in his lyrics that speaks to me on a certain level. I also just like his voice a lot more. Sometimes it's this very simple reason and nothing else. As to the others, I think Jungkook has the perfect voice that makes him able to adapt, depending on each song and genre. It's maleable. From pop, to rock, r&b, you name it. He really does have the vocal range. Do I think his voice is unique and special? No. I think he's the typical singer with a very good voice that probably has the chances to win the national singing contest in some alternative universe. This is not something bad, obviously. What I'm saying is, he has a good voice and he's the most stable out of all the BTS members, but for example, if I were to pick a vocalist, out of all the k-pop songs and groups I've listened to, SHINee's Jonghyun would be the best in my eyes. As for Jimin, I think that without him, the songs would lose their BTS mark. He's the flavour, that something special which has the ability to take another pop song and add something new to it. I'm certainly not a music expert and I don't have the terminology and knowledge to explain Jimin's vocal range (someone did and it was a really good job), but I don't need that in order to like him.

c) Do I suffer from being or coming across as an elitist snob from time to time? I would lie if I say that never happened. It's something that I tried to slowly change because I know it's all bullshit. I used to be like that early on with my film studies until I realized that nothing matters and sometimes, people are allowed to like some bullshit dumb movie, including myself. I'm the same with music, I literally listen to almost everything, from various genres and countries and periods. But what I think you're reffering to and I'm glad you offered some examples, is that no, I don't judge people for liking RM's lyrics, or some BTS music. That's not the reason for why I have such strong opinions. What I don't like it's when the discussion of liking something becomes synonymous with its value. And that's a mistake. One that my professors made sure we didn't do when writing about films. I can like something that has no artistic value based on the established criteria. And vice versa. The problem is, in fandom spaces and particularly Army (cause we're talking about BTS here), are not willing to make such simple distinctions. Everything BTS releases is a work of art and every single thing RM writes is a work of genius. And because of that, they deserve all the awards and no one is like them. This reached the point in which trying to assess the value of an album or a song is made impossible in the fandom. No one can tell me that PTD is genius work, on the same level as many other BTS songs released in the past. We need critical thinking because otherwise, we would be lying to ourselves. So yes, I will judge those who are incapable or not willing to understand nuance or the fact that liking something doesn't equal good.

P.S. I don't want this post to be an invitation to debate over who has the best voice and who doesn't and so on. I only answered about my likings and that's it and because it was part of a larger ask. So I won't talk about that stuff simply because I find it boring and neverending.
