Tamil actor Vijay, who has been working for over two decades, is currently at the biggest high of his career so far with an unprecedented fan base and a slew of blockbuster films to his credit. In the last decade, Vijay truly established himself as one of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema. In the trade, some even consider him to be the true successor to actor Rajinikanth in terms of popularity and business his films manage to generate.

In the last decade, Vijay had 14 releases and out of which as many as eight films grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box-office. His last three releases – Bigil, Sarkar and Mersal – managed to gross over Rs 250 crore worldwide at the ticket window. On the occasion of his 46th birthday, we take a look at five films that made him a box-office phenomenon.

Bigil

  Atlee’s Bigil, a sports drama featuring Vijay in dual roles, released last year to thundering response at the box-office. Despite its comparisons with Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India, the film went on to complete 100-day theatrical run and grossing approximately around Rs 290 crore worldwide. The film had done exceptionally well outside India as well in many key places. In France, it is the highest grossing south Indian film with over 34,000 admissions. In Singapore, it is Vijay’s second film after Mersal to touch SGD 1.5 million mark. The film saw Vijay essaying an aged gangster and a football coach of a women’s football team.

Mersal

  Mersal was the second collaboration of Atlee and Vijay. A story about twin brothers avenging their father’s death, it featured Vijay in triple roles for the first time in his career. The film was a commercial success, grossing around Rs 260 crore worldwide during its theatrical run. At the box-office, Mersal had set new records in many markets. In Malaysia, it earned over Rs 20 crore to become the third biggest grosser in the country after Dilwale and Kabali. Outside India, the film grossed over a whopping $15 million and had become the third biggest overseas grosser of 2017 after Baahubali 2 and Raees.

Sarkar

  Sarkar saw the reunion of Vijay and filmmaker A.R Murugadoss for the third time. A political action-drama, the film featured Vijay in the role of an NRI fighting for his right to vote after he realizes it has been cast illegally. The film opened to mixed response, especially after the mega success of their previous films Thuppakki and Kaththi, but still managed to gross around Rs. 250 crore worldwide. It was the sixth Rs 100-crore grosser for Vijay and fourth in a row after Theri, Bairavaa and Mersal. Sarkar emerged as the highest grossing south Indian film of 2018 at the ticket window, surpassing the lifetime gross of Rs 218 crore of Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam.

Theri was the first time Vijay and Atlee came together. The film, a revenge drama, featured Vijay in dual roles and went on to be a blockbuster at the box-office. The film, in its theatrical run, emerged as the first film by Vijay to breach into Rs 200 crore club. Despite mixed response from critics, the film was celebrated by Vijay’s fans all over. The film was dubbed and released in Telugu as Police, and it did reasonably well.

Thuppakki

  The reason Thuppakki deserves to be in this list instead of Kaththi (which was equally successful) is because the former was Vijay’s first Rs 100 crore grosser. It was A.R Murugadoss’s Thuppakki that really opened the market for Vijay, who quickly established his brand with this film’s huge success. Grossing around Rs. 175 crore worldwide during its theatrical run, the film was centered on an intelligence officer who comes home for vacation and busts a team of sleeper agents. The film was remade in Hindi as Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty with Akshay Kumar.

For a company that launched just two years ago, Indian distributor and post production house NH Studioz took a big risk when it outbid other players for the all-India theatrical distribution rights to Salman Khan’s Tubelight.

However NH Studioz director Shreyans Hirawat is supremely confident about the Kabir Khan-directed drama set during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, which launches worldwide on June 23.

“The festival of Eid has seen some of the biggest Salman Khan movie releases year after year ,” he told me. “The response of the audience to the trailer and songs has been phenomenal. The exact number of screens has not been finalized yet but the audience can expect Tubelight to be the biggest release of 2017.”

Hirawat is delighted with the break-out performance of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Conclusion and acknowledges the drama/action/fantasy has raised the bar for the B.O. collection of Indian movies.

The Arka Mediaworks production has grossed 1,670 crore ($251 million) worldwide, according to analyst Ramesh Bala, second only to Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal. The true-life sports drama starring Aamir Khan has amassed 1,900.75 crore ($285.7 million) globally, including an extraordinary $174.4 million after 35 days in China, where Baahubali 2 is due to open next month.

“We are a content-driven company and believe that if the content of a particular movie is taken to the right audiences at the right time, achieving huge B.O numbers becomes easier. We are hopeful that Tubelight will further set a higher benchmark in terms of collections,” he said.

Produced by Salman Khan Films, the drama follows Salman as Laxman, a man-child who sets off to find his brother Bharat (Salman’s real life brother Sohail Khan). The supporting cast includes Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, Matin Rey Tangu, the late Om Puri and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Shah Rukh Khan has a cameo.

Budgeted at 100 crore ($15 million), the production is already well into profit. NH Studioz paid a reported 132 crore ($19.8 million) and Sony Music forked out 20 crore ($3 million) for the music rights. The soundtrack features five songs, all composed by Pritam. Star TV bought the satellite rights.

Yash Raj Films secured the overseas distribution rights, the first such collaboration between Aditya Chopra's production and distribution powerhouse and Khan.

Although NH Studioz is a relative newcomer, its parent company, Narendra Hirawat & Co., is a pioneer of the Indian film industry, founded in 1980, which distributes Indian cinema across the world. Its library spans more than 1,300 titles, from 1930s classics to the present.

Last year NH Studioz released Pink, a courtroom drama/thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang, worldwide, which grossed a superb 68 crore ($10.2 million) in India. Since then the distributor has handled a bunch of titles including Shivaay, Dear Zindagi and Begum Jaan.

Asked why he thought Salman Khan Films entrusted Tubelight to his firm, Shreyans said, “I think it’s just the chain of success stories that we delivered in the recent past. Being in the entertainment business for several decades, we understand the mindset and choices of Indian audiences very well.

"What also works in our favor is the ethos of doing transparent business with all our stakeholders for many years. It's the sheer determination of our team at NH Studioz of working very hard to achieve our goals and the reputation that we have managed to earn in the industry as well."

Hirawat hasn’t seen the film yet but is confident moviegoers can look forward to a “content-driven plot about two brothers, packaged with emotions and visualized by a strong director.”

NH Studioz has secured the rights to another marquee title: An untitled drama directed by Imtiaz Ali, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, which is scheduled to open on August 15, India's Independence Day.

Settling-in days are always quite unsettling- emotionally. However, the ten days at Shri Ram Murti Smarak International Business School (SRMS IBS), Lucknow, for the newbies of PGDM 2017-2019, things have been quite the contrary.

On the morning of 20th June, Mr. Shyamal Gupta, Director, SRMS IBS welcomed the freshmen on campus with a riveting speech around the ecosystem and practices of the school. He exclaimed- “The best part about SRMS is that we take every student and his individuality into consideration and there is no one rule in helping them, groom. Every student is perceived as being unique and we pay attention individually to each one of you. We ensure that whatever you are investing on us in terms of money, trust and time, you reap the best from it by the end of your PGDM.” Following Mr. Gupta’s speech, the faculty members introduced themselves to the students and elaborated on the student clubs and extra curricular activities of the college.

The Induction program saw 11 events unfurl over ten days. Business Mathematics was arranged with the name of ‘Numbers Don’t Scare’ followed by ‘Bull’s Eye’, a session on prioritization of goals. ‘Unconventionality’, an activity of boosting creative thinking was arranged where students spoke about unconventional uses of any common household item (like paper clip or newspaper). ‘A Managers Wrench’ encouraged the use of tools like MS Excel and covered broad research and strategy. Focusing on how reading broadens the mind, ‘Leaders are Readers’ offered a list of recommended titles across subjects. ‘Chacha Chowdhry ka Dimag’, an aptitude test graded the intelligence quotient (IQ) and cognitive ability of the students while ‘Arthshastra’ familiarized students with Economics and its application in daily life and in business. ‘The Pig’, a session to help students understand wealth management was succeeded by ‘Badi Behas’ which was meant to foster creative thinking, spontaneity, team spirit, and effective communication. Divided into teams of 8 members each, students took up contemporary topics for debate. A movie screening followed.

Tehkikaat’, which had students learn management lessons from the magnum opus Baahubali and the Indian Premier League (IPL). ‘Sakshaatkar’ enabled students to understand nuances of personal interviews through communication, body language, and confidence building. ‘Meme Jacking’ proved to be particularly engaging. With teams submitting 2 sarcastic and funny memes (images or videos) each, the entries were judged on the basis of popularity on SRMS IBS’s Facebook page.

  Just when you thought ten days couldn’t be any more riveting than this, the team building activities unfurled. There were team activities like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Zero scorers will win’ which saw students discussing on how people make choices under conditions of scarcity. ‘Business Crap’, devised to test creativity, wit, and English communication skills, had students discuss business topics humorously.

Things got even better with a session on good grooming and physical appearance. 'Looks Matter' saw Grace Arun, Image Consultant, guide students on dressing etiquette deliver a talk to the eager audience. ‘Your Minute to Fame' allowed students from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talent across various fields.

 There was a talk by India’s youngest motivational speaker, Mr. Faizan Sheikh, where students learned about the success stories of individuals who followed their passions and dreams in spite of failures and rejections. The talk ended amidst thundering applause of a keen audience.

 Mr. Siddiq Aazam, Head, Industry Engagement & Placements, discussed the various activities of the Placement Team. He talked about past trends in placements and preferred skill sets to succeed in campus recruitment and he shared how the team helps students achieve their career goals.

 To encourage values, attitudes, and passion, 'EPIC' offered knowledge and inspiration from inspired thinkers like Devdutt Pattanaik, Shahrukh Khan, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, and Sparsh Shah.

 Contests, food, dance, music dotted the day! Through 10 days of bonding, learning, excitement, and interaction, students were welcomed into the SRMS IBS community- where good things, happen.
