BBC Interview with Keanu Reeves & China Miéville on 'The Book of Elsewhere'

Interview Excerpt

[Voiceover: In the novel, the main character doesn't want to die, he wants mortality, a crucial distinction.] Katie (Interviewer): "I wonder what you've both learnt about man's mortality--Is it something you think about a lot?" Keanu: "Yeah, I'm 59, so I'm thinking 'bout death all the time." Katie: "Still very young." Keanu: "I'm like, I'm, I'm young-old. I mean, I think thinking 'bout death is good. Hopefully it sensitizes to an appreciation of the breath we have, and the relationships we have the potential to have."

China: "I'm 51 and consider death something to be ruminated on with great respect. I think that one of the things--hopefully you can have it both ways. You can have a book that has these kind of, you know, fun, explosive sequences but you can also quite seriously, sort of, talk about death and what that means to be human."

Having created a whole fantasy world, you wonder whether Reeves is trying to escape from reality. "Maybe ultimately the fantasy of building another world brings some kind of comfort in some way," he admits. "There's something ultimately about the creative gesture that comes from pain," he added. "Creating stuff is great. Just creating, sharing, and hopefully people like the stories that we tell." And if they do - if the book is a success - what will Reeves do with the proceeds of the book? The actor is famed for his generosity, and a lot has been written about how he reportedly doesn't like owning things. But this, too, is something Reeves appears to push back on, as our interview comes to a close. "I love owning things, I love having stuff," he said. "I'm certainly not going to present myself as someone who gives everything away." The Book of Elsewhere is published on 23 July by Penguin.

I’m having a dilemma bc I’m gonna buy the BZRKR comic bc I wanna get in on B with everyone else (although I’m still going to read the book of elsewhere first) but my dilemma is whether to get the digital or physical copy bc I very much understand the argument of buying physical media, it’s more secure and permanent and no one can take it from you, but the thing I hate about physical books is that the pages bend, I don’t mind this with conventional books I mostly hate it with comics and the digital version is more appealing to me right now bc the page will be flat, plus I can zoom in and stuff and take screenshots 😍 I think I’ll just get the digital version I have convinced myself 😂
