Brownstone is an American R&B girl group that became well-known in the 1990s for their powerful voices and harmonies. They were signed to Michael Jackson’s label, MJJ Music, and made an impact on the R&B scene with a sound that blended soul, jazz, and contemporary R&B.

The original lineup of Brownstone included:

• Nicci Gilbert

• Charmayne “Maxee” Maxwell

• Monica “Mimi” Doby

Over the years, there have been changes in the lineup, but these three members were part of the group during their peak success.

Notable Songs:

• “If You Love Me” – Their debut single and biggest hit, this song became a classic and earned them a Grammy nomination. Known for its catchy chorus and impressive vocal range, it’s still one of their signature songs.

• “Grapevyne” – Another popular single that showcases their vocal depth and harmonies, with lyrics about heartbreak and betrayal.

• “I Can’t Tell You Why” – A soulful cover of the Eagles’ song, this track displayed the group’s versatility and was well-received by fans.

Brownstone’s music was marked by rich, gospel-influenced harmonies and strong vocal performances. Their songs often dealt with themes of love, heartbreak, and empowerment, resonating with R&B audiences. Their ability to harmonize and deliver emotional performances set them apart, and they were often compared to other powerhouse groups of the 90s like SWV and En Vogue.

Legacy:

Their debut album, From the Bottom Up (1995), went platinum and solidified their place in 90s R&B. Although they faced challenges with label changes and lineup shifts, Brownstone’s impact on the R&B genre remains significant. Tragically, in 2015, member Maxee Maxwell passed away, but Brownstone’s music continues to be celebrated for its soulful sound and heartfelt lyrics.

Almudena's scatterbrained mother is off to one last big dance troupe before she gets "too old" and decides to leave Almudena with her father. Which, normally wouldn't be a big deal. However, Almudena has never met the guy. Not only that, they don't even speak the same language! Almudena quickly finds out that she's not even the "right" kind of Hispanic as to what she thought she was. She's Guatemalan, and what does that even mean?

This is very much a fish out of water story as the main character tries to understand the neighborhood around here--through the language, the culture, and even the socioeconomic issues as residents are priced out of their rented apartments. She feels like she doesn't belong and doesn't know what to do about it. All of that on top of becoming a young woman. It's just so much!

However, throughout the summer, Almudena starts to understand that learning who you are is also about learning the community around you and how you can help.

This graphic novel had fabulous illustrations that helped in conveying the neighborhood, its people, and their lives. All of the characters had such a realistic tone to them that I had to double check to see if this was a graphic memoir. They're fleshed out very well in ways that don't seem over the top, even the characters that are "unique," according to the neighborhood. I enjoyed the writing style as well and will have to look up some more works by these authors.
