The 2020 Supra was an absolute hoot on the road, but its output figures lagged behind the sprightlier variant of the BMW Z4 with which this Toyota shares a chassis. For 2021, Toyota has added new aluminum strut tower braces, revised the adaptive suspension tuning and swapped out the bump stops, plus they’ve further tweaked programming for the rear differential, stability control and power steering. Again, the results are pretty obvious from the first corner entry. Whether in Normal or Sport mode, the 2021 Supra has less body roll than before. Don’t get me wrong, the Supra’s diminutive wheelbase means there’s still plenty of twitch to be had, especially when rolling onto the accelerator when exiting turns, but it’s a bit more manageable. If the stability control needs to intervene, it does so in a smooth manner that doesn’t upset the car’s balance or the driver’s attention. Adding more speed feels less dramatic than it used to.
Given the improvements in performance, I find fewer reasons to push the giant Sport button on the Supra’s center console in spirited driving. It acts like every other Sport mode button, tightening up the suspension, steering and throttle response, but it’s not really necessary. There’s still plenty of gas-pedal punch in Normal mode, and the suspension’s slightly softer tuning means my mediocre Michigan road experience isn’t overly harsh. The Supra’s eight-speed automatic transmission is unchanged, which is fine, because it’s great. Shifts are smooth at any speed, in any mode, and the paddles behind the wheel offer cog-swaps on the quick. There is still no manual transmission available.
Rough pavement still creates a whole host of tire noise, but on the highway, the clamor makes way for some appreciable peace and quiet (for a purpose-built sports car). Wind buffeting is still atrocious with the windows at any position other than fully closed, but it’ll take a redesign to iron out that kink.
The sole downside to adding power is losing fuel economy, but the Supra doesn’t take too big of a hit in that department. The 2020 model was rated at 24 miles per gallon city and 31 mpg highway, and the 2021 now earns ratings of 22 and 30, respectively. I can regularly creep north to 32 or 33 on the highway with a light foot, but yeah, city economy is… not great.
Then again, it’s very clear that the Supra is a dedicated tool and less of an everyday family machine. There’s no back seat and the hatchback offers up a just-okay amount of space, 10.2 cubic feet to be precise, enough for groceries or weekender bags for two and that’s about it. There’s also a paltry amount of cabin storage, with microscopic door-panel pockets and an exposed armrest cubby big enough for a whopping two sets of keys and a face mask. Glove compartment? Hopefully they’re not extra large.
The rest of the 2021 Supra’s interior is unchanged. The steering wheel is still oddly bulbous and ugly, like the 964-generation Porsche 911‘s, and anyone who’s owned a BMW within the last five to 10 years will immediately recognize all of the switchgear. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The interior feels appropriate for the price, with plenty of soft touch points and the right amount of physical switchgear. Honestly, it’s probably good that Toyota decided not to take its own route, switch-wise, because BMW’s are definitely more satisfying to use. The seats are the right amount of supportive, with ample side bolstering that isn’t too constrictive. Visibility remains limited, with somewhat-large blind spots over the haunches.

The word “haunches” will echo through your head as a Supra owner because the rear three-quarter angle is easily the car’s best. From there, my eyes get a heapin’ helpin’ of bulbous rear fender, which leads to a smattering of interesting creases and one seriously pronounced duckbill spoiler. It’s far more interesting than the BMW Z4, and it doesn’t stray too far from Toyota’s FT-1 concept of yore, which likely explains why everyone gawks at the Supra. The front’s a little funky, but it still works, because it’s unlike anything else on the road. Especially if it’s painted in my tester’s $425 cornea-scorching Nitro Yellow.
One BMW carryover I’ll be glad to praise all day is the Supra’s in-car technology. For a straight-up sports car, there’s a good amount of creature comforts tucked away in the wiring. Toyota’s Entune is nowhere to be seen; instead, the 8.8-inch screen on the dashboard (now standard across the lineup) runs BMW’s iDrive infotainment. I think it’s a good system, with a straightforward menu structure and simple access through both the dial on the center console and the touchscreen itself. Wireless Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto won’t make its way to the 2021 Supra, which is a letdown. Charging happens by way of the wireless pad under the climate control, or the nearby USB port, meaning there’s a way to juice up devices for each passenger simultaneously.
Relying on BMW’s infotainment tech isn’t a bad thing at all.

Some sports cars are content to eschew active safety systems almost entirely, but that’s not really Toyota’s modus operandi. All Supras come standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, while an optional $1,195 package on Premium and A91 trims opens up adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and parking sensors. Everything works well together — except for the lane-keep assist, which is way too aggressive and can disrupt highway cruising more than aid it.
The 2021 Toyota Supra’s got some decent competition in the compact premium sports car segment, but it’s aggressively priced, starting at $55,485 for my 3.0-liter tester’s Premium trim and landing at $57,145 with the driver assistance package. Its stablemate, the BMW Z4 M40i, carries a bit more brand cachet but is also more anonymously styled, and the two are now evenly matched on power. The Porsche 718 Cayman S is more refined, but its engine is less exciting to listen to and, like all Porsches, it can get entirely too expensive in a hurry. However, you can also get it with a manual transmission. If you want a Supra at a lower price, its 2.0-liter variant brings that window sticker down to $43,985.
Toyota’s Supra came out of the gates swinging, but there’s always room for improvement. Throwing a number of underbody upgrades at the car, in addition to a dollop of extra power, gives this 2021 Toyota Supra an even more compelling character that is immediately felt and appreciated.

Most BMWs built after July 1, 2020, will offer compatibility with Apple's newly introduced CarKey phone-as-key tech. The feature was announced this week at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference. BMW sits at the vanguard of Apple CarKey's breakout in the auto industry, which sees Near-Field Communication (NFC)-based phone-as-key protocols built into the electronics giant's iOS smartphone operating system and allows iPhones running the latest software to lock, unlock, and start user-registered vehicles.
A 2021 BMW 5 Series sedan demonstrated the CarKey feature at Apple's big event. The technological display inadvertently highlighted the digital key's limitations as much as its benefits. How so? Well, the holy grail of phone-as-key tech would be the ability to keep your phone in your pocket while entering a vehicle, à la today's proximity key fobs that allow drivers to lock, unlock, and start their car without ever needing to grasp the physical key itself. In its current form, CarKey (or as BMW dubs it, "BMW Digital Key for the iPhone") must be brought within 1.5 inches of the driver's side door handle to lock or unlock the vehicle. To start the car, a user must place the phone on the center console's wireless charging pad. Both actions, you might notice, require the user to physically grasp the phone.
It seems BMW and Apple wanted to get the digital key tech out into the marketplace as soon as possible, and thus were forced to rely on today's Digital Key Specification 2.0 for Near-Field Communication (NFC) protocol to make that happen. In its announcement of Digital Key for iPhone, BMW admits NFC Specification 2.0 was just released in May and that a next-generation setup using Ultra Wideband tech is already being developed. UWB tech, as we covered earlier this year at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, is both more secure than NFC and allows the phone to stay in one's pocket, relying on accurate location tracking to determine when a user (and the phone) is close enough to unlock or lock the doors and start the car—all the while ensuring users' hands remain free of bulky phones or keys.
The good news is that BMW Digital Key for iPhone offers some neat innovations to the typical car key formula. A "key"—essentially a pairing between a phone and a vehicle—is stored in Apple's Wallet app (where Apple Pay credit card info and items such as airline boarding passes are kept) and is secured by your phone's lock screen. That means Face ID facial recognition and Touch ID fingerprint scanning can be used to ensure no ordinary jabroni can run off with your phone and enter or drive off with your car. (An "Express Mode" enables the use of the phone as a key without requiring the iPhone to be unlocked prior to use.) BMW and Apple also worked with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to determine and set "global standards" for its digital key function, further helping minimize development clutter among other automakers that will surely want to roll out Apple CarKey-friendly tech, too.
Cooler still, Apple CarKey allows users to share their digital car keys with friends via iMessage. BMW's setup even affords vehicle owners the opportunity to share their car's digital key with up to five other users and includes "a configurable car access option for young drivers, which restricts top speed, horsepower, maximum radio volume, and more." Worried about your iPhone going dead and being unable to get into your BMW? That scenario is covered by Digital Key for iPhone's ability to register users' phones for up to five hours after a low-battery shut-off. The BMW Digital Key is also compatible with Apple Watch, presumably meaning one needn't pull out their phone to lock or unlock the car. Instead, Apple Watch wearers should be able to place their wrist-worn tech near there car's door to gain access.
BMW customers interested in the CarKey feature should know that they'll need an iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, or SE with the upcoming iOS 13.6 software update (Digital Key will be included with iOS 14 more widely). Why the 2021 Toyota Supra Still Doesn’t Have a Manual Transmission
Supra enthusiasts waited decades to see the iconic sports car make its return, and when the Toyota Supra finally returned to North American shores for the 2020 model year, it had the requisite inline-six under the hood. That fact, of course, was made possible with the partnership with BMW that also produced the 2020 Z4. But the only transmission was an eight-speed automatic, and as Toyota has now introduced the 2021 Supra for the car’s second model year, that’s still the case. And yet cries for an available manual transmission have not subsided.
It was not unreasonable to ask if it was coming for the 2021 model, which received big changes across the board. For starters, the turbocharged I-6 in the GR Supra 3.0 generates 47 more horsepower, bringing its specs to 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. And then there’s the fact that the U.S. will get a four-cylinder version for the first time in the form of a 2.0-liter unit generating 255 hp and 295 lb-ft.
Both engines are paired to the same eight-speed automatic. On purpose. Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has tested Supras with a manual but decided not to go there for a couple reasons. One, we’re told, is that Toyota considers the automatic to be an excellent transmission that turns in faster times in the hands of a professional driver. The automatic can also handle a lot of torque, and Toyota knows a lot of tuners will raise the boost—and therefore the stress—on the transmission. In past Supras, people were blowing up transmissions and Tada said he wanted to prevent that with the new car. But one of the main reasons Tada has no current plans to put a manual in the Supra is to better differentiate it from the Toyota 86, a car for which he also served as chief engineer. There will be a second-generation of the 86—Tada wouldn’t provide exact timing—and it will have a manual, he told MotorTrend in an interview at the Daytona 500.
That being said, Tada said he knows people keep asking for a manual in the Supra and in time, after customers have driven the Supra with the automatic, if they are still clamoring for a manual, he will consider it. “It is not out of the question to see an update like that.”
Sports cars historically have hot-and-cold lifecycles that sees pent-up demand drive sales initially, but that can wane quickly. Tada said he will continue to inject excitement into the Supra lineup with special editions and continued engineering to enhance the lineup and keep it fresh. Does that include a targa top? It would seem to be one of the easier things to do from an engineering standpoint, but Tada does not see the value. He reasons that after owners remove the top a few times and see the difficulty of finding a place to store it, they generally leave it in place.
How about an orange Supra like the one in the upcoming Fast and Furious flick F9? Not in the plans right now, but Toyota will monitor the buzz after the movie comes out. Meanwhile Toyota is taking orders now for the $200,000 GT4 race car with 430 hp that will be hit racing circuits next year. And, yes, it has considered the advantages of the compact Supra’s short overhangs in rally competition.
As for the rumored Supra GRMN said to be in the works? “Limited editions are possible in the future,” Tada told us with a smile.

One of the biggest automotive events last year, was the return of the Toyota Supra. And like everything else these days, controversy ensued. From the BMW Kinship, to adding GR to the name, to no manual transmission. It seemed like everyone tried to stir up something, before they actually got around to talking about how great the car is. It was great enough to be our Drivers’ Choice Award winner for best sports coupe, and we thought a few laps around Roebling Road would show you why.
We completed our normal test regime on this 2020 Toyota GR Supra last fall. But, as we recently named it our Motorweek 2020 Drivers’ Choice Best Sport Coupe, and just happened to have some track time already booked; well, we couldn’t resist taking another swing at Toyota’s reborn sports car. Purely for research sake, of course.  
And since our previous test time was relatively short, we feel there is still plenty to learn; a ¼-mile at a time, if we must.    
After modulating through some minor wheel spin at takeoff, the car gathers itself up quickly and starts to lay down decent power. The surface of Roebling Road Raceway’s front straight is not the most conducive for getting great acceleration times; but even with that, we got to 60 in 4.4-seconds, and cleared the ¼-mile in 12.8 at 111 miles-per-hour.   
As for the rest of the track; well, it does pretty well there too. Despite its relatively heavy 3,400-lbs. BMW chassis; it feels lightweight, tossable, and wildly entertaining. Indeed, over our week of Roebling rounds, “fun” was the word our crew used the most.    
This Supra invites you to charge hard into corners and keep your momentum up, taking advantage of the copious amount of grip available. The aluminum-intensive double-joint spring strut front and multi-link rear suspension setup is a BMW design of course, but tuned specifically by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing, thus the GR in the name. 
It feels flickable through tight twisties; yet stable and planted through the high speed portions of the track as well.  
At the same time, it is very responsive; with a darn neutral setup, so make sure you tell it to do the right things, as it can get away from you.
Through all of this, it never felt harsh or super stiff; as there is actually a noticeable amount of body roll here, but it never hinders you from charging out of corners, and immediately triggering a shift from the 8-speed automatic. 
If there’s any shortfall, it’s that it feels like it could be even faster; meaning this chassis can handle a whole lot more horsepower with ease.
Here, BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo puts out just 335-horsepower and 365 lb-ft. of torque. And it looks like Toyota agrees with us. They’ve just announced more power will be coming for 2021 when their six gets bumped up to the Z4’s 382-horsepower and 368 lb-ft. of torque.  
Great news for you procrastinators out there, letting the Supramania die down before committing.  
And, if you’re looking for a less expensive alternative, Toyota has you covered there, as well; with a new entry level GR Supra 2.0 model, powered by, you guessed it, a 2.0-liter I4 turbo. Expect 255-horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque; and less weight to go along with it.  
Toyota certainly did a great job with the look of the new Supra; keeping the familiar snoopiness of Supras past intact, while bringing in modern elements like standard 19-inch wheels, LED lighting, and of course aerodynamics.  
The BMW influence shows strongest inside, where things from switchgear to the overall layout have much more in common with a 3-series sedan, than anything Toyota.  
And while some might look at that as a negative, to us it represents a clear step up, with a precision feel not found in any other Toyota.  
You do get a unique steering wheel and shifter; but otherwise, controls, gauges, and the dash top infotainment screen are all BMW.  
But everything works very well. And starting next year, the optional 8.8-inch touchscreen display will be standard on all Supras.  
Seating for just two, means no back seat drivers, but a decent 10.2 cubic-ft. of cargo space under the rear hatch for plenty of provisions.  
Government Fuel Economy Ratings for current spec I-6 are 24-City, 31-Highway, and 26-Combined. That makes for an average Energy Impact Score, with 12.7-barrels of annual oil consumption, and 5.5-tons of CO2 emissions.  
No matter how you spin it, the Supra is a performance bargain, at $50,945 to start; $54,945 for premium trim.   
Now, we’re not one to pat ourselves on the back around here, but our track time with this 2020 Toyota GR Supra proved to us that we made a really great choice as our Drivers’ Choice Best Sport Coupe. And it looks like more good things are still to come from Toyota and the new Supra.

After a couple hours in the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 I thought to myself, “We waited two decades for this, a reskinned BMW Z4 with a fixed roof?” Don’t get me wrong, this new, entry-level, four-cylinder Supra is stylish, sharp and plenty swift, but it still lacks a certain magic, that somethin’-somethin’ that compels you to take a late-night drive to get some milk even though there’s still plenty in the fridge.

Mazda’s pint-sized Miata has exactly this enchanted feel; its spellbinding dynamics harmonize with your soul. Something like a Ford Shelby GT350 with its bellowing V8 can provide similar feels, albeit on a much larger, louder scale. But the Supra gives me no such tingles. I feel no more connected to it than I do to my work laptop. Both are purposeful and highly responsive, but I’m in love with neither.
This sentiment was completely unexpected because the Supra does the sports-car thing well, Bavarian underpinnings and all. The car’s ride is properly pounding, any suppleness traded in for exemplary body control and zero roll through corners. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, which are gummier than hot tar and envelop a set of stylish 18-inch wheels, provide seemingly inexhaustible grip. This machine’s hefty steering is immediate and exacting. Despite being slightly smaller than what’s fitted to its six-cylinder sibling, the GR Supra 2.0’s brakes are potent and progressive, with a nice, firm pedal feel. But despite ticking all these boxes, something’s still missing, and I can’t quite put my finger on it.

That isn’t to say the Supra isn’t objectively impressive. The Supra’s 2.0-liter engine option is new for 2021. Borrowed from BMW, this four-cylinder turbocharged unit is superb, both snappy and smooth, cranking out 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Those figures pale in comparison to the heat six-cylinder Supras pack, but this car still absolutely rips, shooting from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat (the 2021 Supra 3.0 can do the deed in as little as 3.9 seconds). The engine is linear in its power delivery and extremely refined. Honestly, there’s no need for a higher-end Supra — the performance this base model provides is shockingly good.
An eight-speed automatic transmission helps keep that engine roiling. Quick and crisp, it’s a willing accomplice when driving delinquency is demanded, though it’s still no substitute for a manual. At least for now, a row-your-own gearbox is not offered in any version of the Supra, and perhaps that’s partly why the car leaves me feeling less than enraptured. But hey, at least the automatic helps reduce consumption. According to the EPA, my tester delivers 28 miles per gallon combined, a figure derived from its city score of 25 mpg and its highway rating of 32 mpg. In the real world, however, I obliterated those figures, averaging more than 36 mpg after an extended drive, a performance that underscores this powertrain’s all-around excellence.

This car’s styling is undeniably attractive.

Yes, I love the Supra’s giddy-up, but I’ve also fallen for its design. The car’s handsome proportions, nose-to-the-ground front end and perky backside make it look like nothing else on the road, especially when dressed in Nitro Yellow. That double-bubble roof is oh-so-cool, and those broad hips draw your eye with every glance in the side-view mirror. Despite the curvaceous metalwork, this machine isn’t particularly wide, or large in any dimension for that matter. It’s longer than a Miata and shorter than a Mustang, slotting neatly between those two competitors. This car is also something of a ‘tweener in Toyota’s lineup, a stepping stone between the affordable 86 sports car and the more potent Supra 3.0. 
I find my tester’s leather-and-Alcantara-covered seats comfortable, offering plenty of support thanks to the firm padding, though the bolstering may be too aggressive for some. Manually adjustable unlike in higher-end models, the chairs’ various levers and ratchets make it easy to find a good driving position, though no amount of tweaking will improve the rear sightlines. Those massive roof pillars that help give this car such sexy styling are also great at obliterating visibility. The small backlight is no help, either. Making matters worse, blind-spot monitoring and other useful features, such as rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors, aren’t standard. Instead, they’re bundled in the $3,485 safety and technology package.
As for other features, the Supra Command infotainment system is like forgotten leftovers: starting to stink. Basically an older version of BMW iDrive, it comes with an 8.8-inch display and a convoluted interface. It’s not particularly easy to navigate, though you can operate it with control buttons on the center console or via the touchscreen, which is nice. Embedded navigation is also included with that safety and tech package, as is wireless Apple CarPlay. Android Auto isn’t offered, so sad trombone if you’re a fan of The Google. Another downside is that this Toyota won’t be updated to iDrive 7, BMW’s latest and greatest infotainment system, even though its sibling, the Z4, already has it. Yeah, I’m as confused about this decision as you are, but so it goes.

Technological curiosities aside, the rest of the Supra’s cabin is a nice place to be. There’s plenty of soft plastic, which has a dense, high-quality feel and an attractive pattern. For better or worse, the climate controls and other switches are borrowed from BMW. Aside from the Nokia brick-phone electronic shifter and cheesy-looking gauges, everything meshes quite nicely. As you might expect, the Supra is not a particularly versatile car. In-cabin storage is scarce, limited to a small cubby on the center tunnel, another bin ahead of the gear selector and tiny door pockets. The trunk is also petite, though it should be spacious enough to carry luggage for two people.
Compared to six-cylinder models, the Supra 2.0 is down on power and torque, it also has smaller brakes, no strut-tower-to-radiator-support reinforcements, fixed rather than adaptive dampers and a standard differential. On the plus side, it’s also about 219 pounds lighter and, most importantly, way more affordable — like, a whopping eight grand cheaper. Out the door, my tester checks out for $47,895, a figure that includes the $3,485 safety and tech package, a $425 paint job and $995 in delivery fees. In comparison, the Supra 3.0 starts at 52 big ones and goes up from there.
Of all the Japanese sports cars available today that are engineered by Bavarians and assembled in Austria by a third-party manufacturer, the Toyota Supra is hands down my favorite. But all jokes aside, even in base, four-cylinder guise it offers potent acceleration and crisp dynamics. But after extensive time behind the wheel, I think I’d still rather have a Mazda Miata or even a Mustang EcoBoost with the high-performance package. Toyota’s Supra does many things right, but it somehow leaves me completely whelmed, neither over nor under.

Paris auto show highlights electric SUVs yet diesel lives on
PARIS — Diesel is in the doghouse. There’s a global fight over trade. Brexit is looming. Tighter vehicle emissions rules are on the way.
Those are among the challenges facing auto executives as they gather this week at the Paris Motor Show to unveil new vehicles and talk about the industry’s future.
A number of carmakers, including Volkswagen and Ford of Europe, are skipping the event, which alternates years with Frankfurt as Europe’s major auto exhibition. Still, the shiny new models, ranging from sleek supercars for wealthy collectors to hatchbacks for urban millennials, are a powerful draw for the public, with the last show in 2016 attracting 1.1 million people.
Here’s what to watch out for at the show, which opens to media for previews on Tuesday and to the public on Thursday.

TESLA HERE WE COME
A major focus will be the rollout of luxury electric sport-utility vehicles from the established automakers competing with Tesla’s all-electric Model X SUV.
Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz has the EQC and Volkswagen’s Audi will show off the e-tron. The launches by two major luxury brands represent a notable endorsement of electric vehicles, but will they catch on with consumers? Pure electric vehicles had only 0.6 per cent of the European market in 2017 and remain relatively more expensive than gasoline or diesel, which is why the focus for now is on the higher price range.
And there are questions over when carmakers can match Tesla’s proprietary network of Supercharger fast-charging stations. Daimler, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Ford have formed the Ionity joint venue to build 400 fast-charging stations on highway routes across Europe by 2020. But the Ionity website shows only seven stations so far, with 12 under construction. Tesla already has 1,344 stations with multiple chargers in Europe and the Middle East, according to its website.
Selling more electrics would help European automakers meet tightening limits coming in 2021 on emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that scientists say causes global warming.
And no one wants to be left behind when battery prices fall and electrics become a real choice for cost-conscious car buyers.

DIESEL: NOT DEAD YET
Diesel cars have seen a steep fall in sales in the wake of Volkswagen’s 2015 scandal in which it was caught rigging engines to cheat on emissions tests. Diesel’s market share fell from 50 per cent on the eve of the scandal to 36 per cent in Europe in July.
Yet automakers will still be offering plenty of new diesels, especially when it comes to SUVs. They get better mileage, and fuel is expensive in Europe. In Germany, gasoline costs about $6.30 per gallon.
Automakers will also need that better mileage performance to meet the European Union’s CO2 emissions standard. Diesel still faces opposition from environmentalists who want faster progress to electrics and have exerted pressure on cities with high levels of air pollution to ban older diesel models.

TRADE AND BREXIT
The industry was relieved when U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to hold off on new import duties for autos. But worries about an exchange of new tariffs between the U.S. and China have nonetheless darkened the outlook.
Both BMW and Daimler cited trade concerns in issuing profit warnings this year. BMW is the largest U.S. auto exporter, shipping SUVs from its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Britain’s Brexit divorce from the EU threatens to undermine auto production in Europe by slowing shipments of parts between the EU and Britain. Modern auto plants operate on a strict time schedule, sending parts just in time to be put together when manufacturing an engine or chassis. Even small border delays could wreak havoc at plants on both sides of the English Channel.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has said the company would have to reassess plans for 80 billion pounds ($104 billion) in investment if Britain leaves without an agreement guaranteeing tariff-free trade with the EU.

THE CARS
Oh yes. The cars. PSA Group’s premium brand DS shows off the DS 3 Crossback, dubbed “the most important French launch at the show,” by automotive business intelligence firm JATO Dynamics. The vehicle is one size smaller than the DS 7 Crossback, which has helped revive the brand’s sales. It’s in the “B” class, just above the smallest subcompacts, and will face tough competition from the Audi Q2 and MINI Countryman.
The popularity of such smaller SUVs has helped automakers increase sales as consumers shift from sedans and hatchbacks.
BMW is expected to unveil a new version of its seven-year-old 3-Series, a midsize sedan that has underpinned the company’s model range for years. Cars still outsold SUVs in the premium midsize segment in Europe last year, though the gap has been shrinking as SUV sales boom.
BMW will also show off the revived Z4 two-seater into a lukewarm market for premium midsize sports cars in Europe. “Sports cars are slowly disappearing from the roads, as they are being challenged by supercars on one side, and with coupe SUVs on the other,” said JATO.
For sheer gawking value, it will be hard to beat the Bugatti Divo, billed as a lighter, more agile version of the company’s Chiron supercar. Gleaming in a paint job dubbed “titanium liquid silver,” it’s powerful as well as pretty, with a monster 16-cylinder engine generating 1,500 horsepower. The production run of 40 is sold out at 5 million euros ($5.8 million) apiece.

2021 Toyota Supra First Look: New Four-Cylinder Detailed, Six Gets More Power
As MotorTrend first reported last week, Toyota will offer a more affordable Supra with a smaller, less powerful four-cylinder engine in the U.S. Now, we can now officially confirm that momentous news. Toyota has announced the new addition to the Supra sports car lineup ahead of NASCAR’s Daytona 500, where 43 of its race cars will compete this Sunday.
Finally, a Four-Cylinder Supra!
The new 2021 Supra 2.0 becomes the entry model, slotting between the Toyota 86 and the Supra 3.0 with the inline-six that launched last year. That 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six (and, well, plenty of the rest of the Supra) came from BMW, part of the partnership that also created the Z4. The two automakers shared costs to make it feasible to create low-volume, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat sports cars for each brand. In the 2020 Supra, the six-cylinder generated 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque, and in our testing that was good for a 3.9-second 0–60 mph test and a 12.5-second quarter mile at 111.2 mph. For 2021, the six-cylinder’s output rises to 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque; Supras so equipped should therefore be slightly quicker.
But enough about the six—how about that four-cylinder Supra? Toyota already is selling an entry-level version of the Supra with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine—also supplied by BMW—in Europe and Asia. There, the Toyota’s four-cylinder is available in two power outputs. The lesser version makes 194 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, while the more powerful version produces 225 horsepower and 295-lb-ft. Americans, rejoice—the Supra 2.0-liter four-cylinder being sent Stateside has been massaged to 255 horsepower (at 5,000–6,500 rpm) and 295 lb-ft of torque (which lands from 1,550 to 4,400 rpm). Those numbers equal the performance of the BMW Z4 s30i with the 2.0-liter four cylinder, and Toyota figures they’re good enough to scoot the Supra 2.0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds flat.
Lighter in Weight and Content
While the four-cylinder Supra clearly won’t keep up with the six-cylinder version, that it will only fall about a second or so behind in the sprint to 60 mph is good news. The Supra 2.0’s light weight surely helps. At 3,181 pounds, the base Supra is some 200-plus pounds lighter than the Supra 3.0. Partly, that’s because of its missing two cylinders—the four-cylinder shares much of its technology with the 3.0-liter inline-six, including a twin-scroll turbo, direct fuel injection, and continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts—but a lot of the 2.0’s diet comes from smaller front brake rotors and swaps the four-piston calipers for single-piston units. Base Supras also ditch the 3.0’s active differential and adaptive suspension, and drivers must adjust their seats manually (instead of using 14-way power controls) and listen to music from only four audio speakers instead of 10.
What the car does get is a new Safety and Technology package, which is available on the 2.0 as well as the 3.0 with adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and an upgraded audio system. The Driver’s Assist package, an option on the 3.0, is not available on the 2.0, though at least 2.0 drivers can enjoy the same snappy eight-speed automatic transmission (with manual mode and paddle shifters) as buyers of the six-cylinder Supra.
Pricing has not been announced, but given how the four-cylinder Supra slots between the Toyota 86, which starts at about $30,000, and the 2020 Supra 3.0, which started at $50,920, take a guess where it’ll land. That said, pricing for the 2021 Supra 3.0 is expected to increase, thanks to a small power boost and more standard features. It will start arriving in dealerships in June.

BMW Plans Life Cycle Impulse Models by 2021
BMW has already expressed its expansion plan on its future model range, with Auto Motor und Sport recently stating that no less than 28 of its models will undergo series updates by 2021. Some of them were already announced, seen at work in spied tests or reviewed.
It all started last year with the fresh introduction of the all-new 2017 BMW 5-Series, carrying on with the carmaker`s plan of replacing the existing 5-Series GT with a new 6-Series GT: the model was also spied in camouflage.
Also, BMW is working on the future BMW X7, which is going to be the biggest, widest, most aggressive and most powerful model within the X lineup so far. The model, is going to arrive on the market in 2019.
More than that, a couple of weeks ago we also witnessed the first spy photos with the all-new BMW M5, the potent model getting ready to break loose with more than 600 horsepower onboard. Also, the 3-Series and the X5 will break cover in 2018 with more technology onboard and impressive performance under the hood.
Last but not least, we have also caught the M2 preparing for a mild facelift, while the Z5, the official replacement of the current Z4, will emerge on the market in 2018, along its half-sibling Toyota Supra. Paris Auto show highlights electric SUVs yet diesel lives on
PARIS — Diesel is in the doghouse. There’s a global fight over trade. Brexit is looming. Tighter vehicle emissions rules are on the way.
Those are among the challenges facing auto executives as they gather this week at the Paris Motor Show to unveil new vehicles and talk about the industry’s future.
A number of carmakers, including Volkswagen and Ford of Europe, are skipping the event, which alternates years with Frankfurt as Europe’s major auto exhibition. Still, the shiny new models, ranging from sleek supercars for wealthy collectors to hatchbacks for urban millennials, are a powerful draw for the public, with the last show in 2016 attracting 1.1 million people.
Here’s what to watch out for at the show, which opens to public on Thursday:

TESLA HERE WE COME
A major focus will be the rollout of luxury electric sport-utility vehicles from the established automakers competing with Tesla’s all-electric Model X SUV.
Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz has the EQC and Volkswagen’s Audi will show off the e-tron. The launches by two major luxury brands represent a notable endorsement of electric vehicles, but will they catch on with consumers? Pure electric vehicles had only 0.6 per cent of the European market in 2017 and remain relatively more expensive than gasoline or diesel, which is why the focus for now is on the higher price range.
And there are questions over when carmakers can match Tesla’s proprietary network of Supercharger fast-charging stations. Daimler, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Ford have formed the Ionity joint venue to build 400 fast-charging stations on highway routes across Europe by 2020. But the Ionity website shows only seven stations so far, with 12 under construction. Tesla already has 1,344 stations with multiple chargers in Europe and the Middle East, according to its website.
Selling more electrics would help European automakers meet tightening limits coming in 2021 on emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that scientists say causes global warming.
And no one wants to be left behind when battery prices fall and electrics become a real choice for cost-conscious car buyers.

DIESEL: NOT DEAD YET
Diesel cars have seen a steep fall in sales in the wake of Volkswagen’s 2015 scandal in which it was caught rigging engines to cheat on emissions tests. Diesel’s market share fell from 50 per cent on the eve of the scandal to 36 per cent in Europe in July.
Yet automakers will still be offering plenty of new diesels, especially when it comes to SUVs. They get better mileage, and fuel is expensive in Europe. In Germany, gasoline costs about $6.30 per gallon.
Automakers will also need that better mileage performance to meet the European Union’s CO2 emissions standard. Diesel still faces opposition from environmentalists who want faster progress to electrics and have exerted pressure on cities with high levels of air pollution to ban older diesel models.

TRADE AND BREXIT
The industry was relieved when U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to hold off on new import duties for autos. But trade worries, especially with China, have nonetheless darkened the outlook.
Both BMW and Daimler cited trade concerns in issuing profit warnings this year. BMW is the largest U.S. auto exporter, shipping SUVs from its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Britain’s Brexit divorce from the EU threatens to undermine auto production in Europe by slowing shipments of parts between the EU and Britain. Modern auto plants operate on a strict time schedule, sending parts just in time to be put together when manufacturing an engine or chassis. Even small border delays could wreak havoc at plants on both sides of the English Channel.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has said the company would have to reassess plans for 80 billion pounds ($104 billion) in investment if Britain leaves without an agreement guaranteeing tariff-free trade with the EU.

THE CARS
Oh yes. The cars. The popularity of small SUVs has helped automakers increase sales as consumers shift from sedans and hatchbacks.
PSA Group’s premium brand DS shows off the DS 3 Crossback, dubbed “the most important French launch at the show,” by automotive business intelligence firm JATO Dynamics. The vehicle is one size smaller than the DS 7 Crossback, which has helped revive the brand’s sales. It’s in the “B” class, just above the smallest subcompacts, and will face tough competition from the Audi Q2 and MINI Countryman.
BMW is expected to unveil a new version of its seven-year-old 3-Series, a midsize sedan that has underpinned the company’s model range for years. Cars still outsold SUVs in the premium midsize segment in Europe last year, though the gap has been shrinking as SUV sales boom.
BMW will also show off the revived Z4 two-seater into a lukewarm market for premium midsize sports cars in Europe. “Sports cars are slowly disappearing from the roads, as they are being challenged by supercars on one side, and with coupe SUVs on the other,” said JATO.
For sheer gawking value, it will be hard to beat the Bugatti Divo, billed as a lighter, more agile version of the company’s Chiron supercar. Gleaming in a paint job dubbed “titanium liquid silver,” it’s powerful as well as pretty, with a monster 16-cylinder engine generating 1,500 horsepower. The production run of 40 is sold out at 5 million euros ($5.8 million) apiece.
