This car will be familiar to Europeans and BMW-philes, but probably not so much to regular North American old car people - it’s a 1972 #BMW 2000 Touring; a hatchback version of the familiar BMW 2002. Shortened versions of the 1962 “Neue Klasse” sedans (the ancestors of arguably all modern BMWs), the 2002 and it’s 1600-2 predecessor were gems - good to drive, responsive, reliable, and handsome; with clean lines by Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen; done under the eye of director Wilhelm Hofmeister. - Relatively early in the life of the 1600-2 Alex von Folkhausen, who’d developed the Neue Klasse M10 four, decided dropping the 2-liter from the 2000 sedan into the 1602 was worth trying, and was surprised to discover he had two allies in pitching it to BMW’s board - product planner Helmut Werner Bonsch and U.S. importer Max Hoffman. Thus was born the 2002, which quickly became a hit in the U.S. and solidified BMW’s reputation here (this was, after all, only a decade after Isettas). - Curiously missing from the U.S., however, were the Bauer-built cabriolet (a few trickled in) and  Targa; and the Touring hatchback. The creation of the Touring stemmed from BMW’s acquisition of Hans Glas GMBH in 1966. BMW didn’t just buy Glas, it absorbed lots of Glas design ideas, one of which was a 2-door wagon - the Glas 1304CL. The 1304CL was a bit awkward, BMW sales director Paul Hahnemann thought the fastback wagon treatment would look good the 1602/2002, and BMW contracted Giovanni Michelotti to adapt the look; and the Touring arrived in 1971. - At first, the car was called the Touring 2000, to separate it somewhat from the 2002. But as the resemblance was quite clear, after a year or so it became the 2002 Touring, complete with a Tii option. This is one of those early cars, owned by @kupper26 and affiliated, as the plate says, with @bmw2002faq (where you can learn lots more). - The hatchback added lots of utility, but perhaps correctly assuming Americans weren’t in love with hatchbacks (they liked MGB/GTs), the Touring never came to the USA. A little over 30,000 Tourings (including 1600s and 1800s) were made from ’71-’74. Ones you see in the U.S. now are private imports.
