Why has COVID been so much worse this summer? The health belief model has the answer - Published Sept 2, 2024
A great article in The Conversation by Steven Kahn
If you think COVID-19 was suddenly in the news a lot over the summer, you’re probably right.
Throughout August, outlets in both Canada and the United States ran headlines about high COVID levels, the summer surge of cases, timing of booster shots and reviving the use of face masks.
As numerous athletes tested positive for COVID at the Olympics in Paris, news outlets reminded Canadians that COVID is still a threat, and that summer cold symptoms might in fact be COVID.
The list of COVID news stories could go on and on, but what many experts seem to agree on is that this surge is a pretty big deal. In fact, Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health predicts this wave might be the biggest summer surge since the virus started, according to an article in CNN.
Why COVID is surging now? But why is the biggest surge occurring now, after health experts declared the end of the global health emergency over a year ago?
My research team at Royal Roads University studied how to share evidence-based health information during the COVID-19 pandemic, collecting interview, survey and experimental data between 2020 and 2023. We developed a framework that employed the health belief model for understanding why people may choose to act on health promoting behaviours — like adopting masks and vaccines during a pandemic.
Looking at the news about this latest surge, I think the health belief model can help people understand why our biggest summer surge has specifically occurred after the pandemic stage of the virus has been declared long over.
The health belief model The health belief model helps public health practitioners and doctors understand what motivates people to adopt a positive health action (like quitting smoking or exercising), or act to reduce exposure to a negative health event (like getting a flu vaccine or practising safer sex).
This model tells us that the likelihood of a person taking action towards a particular health outcome depends on the person’s perception of the risk of the negative health outcome to themselves personally, and also their perception of the benefit of the risk reducing behaviour. People also need to feel like they have the ability to take the necessary action, and that the action will be effective.
Tumblr media
Adopting the health belief model in practice means that public health communicators and the media need to illuminate both the risk of the negative health outcome, and the benefits and effectiveness of the risk reducing behaviours that will help people avoid the health danger. Both of these elements have been lacking since the end of the global emergency declaration for COVID-19.
Health belief and the summer of COVID The reason I think we’re seeing such a surge now is because people don’t believe COVID is a risk, and they also don’t understand how getting vaccinations beyond the initial vaccine series from a few years ago would protect them now.
When public health officials communicated the end to the global emergency stage of COVID, they unwittingly gave the public the impression that the danger was over. This decreased perceived risk and, with it, the likelihood that people would engage in regular vaccination, mask wearing and hand washing.
Furthermore, Health Canada no longer keeps or reports the latest COVID numbers, which means that many people have no real idea of the relative risk to themselves for gathering in public spaces, making them less likely to take precautions and more likely to pass on the virus.
Reporting on COVID in the media has not helped matters. While the dangers of new variants began to be reported as early as May of this year, the reporting on the spread of the virus didn’t really start to pick up until Olympians started collapsing after events.
This is the biggest summer wave because people are under-vaccinated and have stopped taking other precautions like distancing or wearing masks. And the reasons why we’re not taking these important risk-reduction behaviours is because many of us believe that COVID is over, or, if not over, that it’s not a big deal.
But long COVID is still a risk and as of mid-August, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported over four million COVID cases in Canada. It’s not “just the flu” either, as with this summer surge, the World Health Organization also reports increases in hospitalizations.
COVID is not the emergency it once was, but it’s still a health threat, and we’d be wise to reduce our risk of getting it. That’s why public health communicators should re-integrate strategies that employ the health belief model to remind people that they are at risk, they can do something to reduce that risk and they will be better off for it.

Safety and Side Effects
While Tofacinix 11mg is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects such as:
Upper respiratory infections
Headaches
Increased cholesterol levels
Risk of blood clots
Patients with a history of heart disease, cancer, or infections should use Tofacinix 11mg with caution. Regular blood tests and check-ups are necessary to monitor potential risks.

What to Expect During a Consultation with a Fever Specialist

These diagnostic tests help pinpoint the cause of your fever, ensuring that the treatment is both effective and timely.
Treatment Options Available

The Key to Building Resilient Boards
Tumblr media
As the world navigates economic disruptions like the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the accelerated adoption of AI, and ongoing geopolitical tensions in 2025, the role of high-performance boards has never been more crucial. For example, a Deloitte survey from 2025 highlights that 82% of board members globally identified geopolitical risks as a top concern, underscoring the need for agile strategic planning. Similarly, a recent McKinsey report reveals that companies with highly diverse boards outperform their peers by 39% in profitability, emphasizing the tangible benefits of inclusive governance during turbulent periods. High-performance boards do more than weather the storm—they chart pathways for resilience and sustainable growth. Agility remains their cornerstone, encompassing proactive scenario planning, swift strategy adaptation, and a continuous focus on innovation to thrive amidst uncertainty.
Diverse boards are better equipped to tackle multifaceted challenges. Diversity in expertise, gender, cultural backgrounds, and professional experiences enriches discussions, offering a wider range of perspectives. This not only improves problem-solving but also fosters innovation in addressing emerging challenges. Effective boards prioritize a robust risk management framework. They engage actively in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, whether operational, financial, or reputational. Establishing real-time monitoring systems and ensuring transparency around risk-related discussions enhances preparedness for potential disruptions.
Informed decision-making hinges on access to accurate and actionable data. High-performance boards invest in technology and analytics to gain a clear understanding of operational performance, market trends, and emerging threats. This enables them to make data-driven decisions with confidence. Strong collaboration between the board and executive management ensures alignment on goals and priorities. High-performing boards foster open communication channels, creating a partnership where leaders can collectively navigate challenges and leverage opportunities.
Challenging times often test an organization’s commitment to its values. High-performance boards champion ethical decision-making and integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into their strategies. This approach strengthens stakeholder trust and enhances long-term resilience. To stay relevant, high-performance boards commit to continuous learning. They actively seek updates on industry trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements. Regular board education sessions, workshops, and briefings help members stay ahead of the curve.
In the face of complexity, innovation is key to finding solutions and creating opportunities. High-performance boards encourage a culture of experimentation and support investments in new technologies, business models, and ideas that can differentiate the organization in the marketplace. Transparent and consistent communication with stakeholders is essential during uncertain times. High-performing boards ensure that key stakeholders—including investors, employees, and customers—remain informed about the organization’s challenges, progress, and plans. Finally, self-assessment is integral to a board’s high performance. Regular evaluations help boards identify areas for improvement and enhance their effectiveness. High-performance boards view these assessments not as critiques but as opportunities to optimize their contributions to the organization.
High-performance boards are the backbone of resilient organizations in challenging times. By embracing these strategies, they can navigate complexities, foster stakeholder trust, and drive long-term success. In today’s dynamic business environment, the ability to adapt and lead with clarity is not just a competitive advantage—it is a necessity.

With access to COVID-19 rapid tests becoming increasingly difficult in Windsor, a former director of Ontario's COVID-19 Science Advisory Table is advising people to do all they can to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.
Dr. Fahad Razak, who grew up in Windsor, said people should treat testing and getting COVID-19 vaccines as part of their regular routine.
"Responding to illness like this is about being pragmatic … so if you can avoid getting other people sick, if you can test and avoid getting high risk individuals exposed, if you can keep your kids home, if you can do things to prevent spread, that's a good thing," Razak said on Windsor Morning.
"I think as a physician, what's been reinforced to me over my career, and it's not just for COVID, it's that preventing infections where possible is a good thing because they inherently are unpredictable."
A spokesperson for Health Canada previously told CBC that it is no longer procuring rapid tests en masse. The agency also says there are no plans to replenish the federal inventory after it is depleted, but that provinces are able to request test kits until they expire or the stockpile runs out.
The Windsor-Essex Health Unit says free rapid antigen test kits will not be restocked in the future.
CBC News called a handful of pharmacies in Windsor and found none of them had test kits for sale or knew where we could find them.
Razak said he's "surprised" to learn that rapid antigen tests are seemingly impossible to find in Windsor-Essex.
"One of the tenants of public health is trying to make it easy for people to do what they need to to protect themselves, and certainly for higher risk groups especially, this is a test that has value," he said.
According to Razak, while COVID-19 is not having the impact that it did back in 2020 to 2022, "this is still an illness that is spreading unpredictably … and so you could get sick in the middle of summer. So, I think the idea of trying to help people protect themselves can still be part of the story, while we acknowledge that things are significantly better than they once were."
How to get a COVID-19 test The provincial government says if you have COVID‑19 symptoms and are at a higher risk of severe illness, you should get tested for COVID‑19 and seek care as soon as possible, as you may benefit from available COVID‑19 treatments.
According to the province, you are eligible for publicly funded COVID-19 testing if you have COVID‑19 symptoms and belong to certain groups, including seniors and those who are immunocompromised.
If you develop symptoms and you are eligible for a publicly-funded test, provincial health authorities recommend you contact your primary care provider or pharmacist to find out about test availability and to arrange to take a test. If you are unsure if you are eligible for a PCR test, speak with your health care provider.
The latest data from the province shows the positivity rate of COVID-19 at 14.9 per cent. There were 89 outbreaks reported in the most recent week, hospital bed occupancy stood at 781, and there were six deaths linked to the virus.
This coming December will mark five years since the first case of the virus was detected.
Meanwhile, Razak said the unavailability of rapid antigen tests and "largely" losing the ability to monitor spread through wastewater means people need to be extra vigilant.
Ontario officially ended its COVID-19 wastewater surveillance program on July 31, but the executive director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) said this did not impact Windsor-Essex.
Mike McKay said the institute applied for a federal grant announced early May — part of the Canada biomedical research fund for pandemic preparedness — and received a $15 million grant over four years.
"In that proposal, we had actually included this strategic area, Windsor-Essex, as one of the places that we'd like to continue wastewater surveillance," McKay told CBC back in June.

Top Benefits of Using Active Air Purifiers in Medical and Home Settings
If there’s one thing the COVID-19 pandemic taught us, it’s to be more conscious of the air you breathe. You might think you’re safe because you’re at home or in the hospital, but germs, viruses, and allergens are still present and could cause illnesses. Good habits like washing your hands and covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough can help mitigate the spread of disease. But if you want to fortify your defenses even further, use an active air purifier.
Active air purifiers generate 10 times more OH radicals than regular purifiers, so they are more effective at cleaning indoor air and keeping it sanitized. The OH radicals are regenerated further after the initial disinfection, allowing the device to cover an area of up to 120 square meters. As such, these purifiers are ideal for medical settings like clinics as well as for homes.
Not just bacteria and viruses
One of the key features of an active air purifier is that it strips off the hydrogen atom from viruses and bacteria. It works on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), too. Removing the hydrogen atom from these airborne substances destabilizes their structural integrity, rendering them harmless.
Wide coverage
Indoor air is actually more polluted than outdoors. The enclosed space traps pathogens inside, making them easier to breathe and spread. High-quality active air purifiers like the AirVaccine 015+ cover up to 120 square meters of indoor space, making them practical for various settings, including commercial spaces, hotels, laboratories, and apartments.
Infection control
AirVaccine 015+ is an active air purifier that has been meticulously tested by Korea Conformity Laboratories. The findings show its ability to remove 99.9% of bacteria like E.Coli and 98.03% of Influenza Type A viruses like H1N1. Additionally, it’s proven to eliminate 95% of VOCs and 99.4% of Vaccinia viruses like Smallpox.
Breathe safe and clean air at home or in your clinic.
Get an active air purifier from Steede Medical, a top medical equipment supplier in the US. They carry the AirVaccine 015+ and related products to help you get the most for your air purifier, including replacement cartridges.

Telehealth for Follow-Up Appointments: A Convenient and Effective Solution
Tumblr media
Telehealth has revolutionized healthcare by making it easier for patients to access services from the comfort of their homes. One of the most impactful uses of telehealth is in follow-up appointments. These visits help healthcare providers monitor patients’ progress, adjust treatments, and answer questions, all while minimizing in-person visits.
The Growing Popularity of Telehealth for Follow-Up Appointments
Telehealth follow-up appointments surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare providers turned to remote solutions to continue safe patient care without compromising quality. This shift allowed patients to experience the convenience of virtual follow-up care firsthand.
Even as in-person healthcare options return, the demand for telehealth remains high. Patients and providers now recognize the benefits and efficiencies of virtual follow-up visits. This trend continues to grow, shaping the future of post-treatment care.
Benefits of Telehealth Follow-Up Appointments
Convenience for Patients Telehealth follow-ups allow patients to consult their providers without leaving home, eliminating travel time and waiting room delays.
Improved Access to Healthcare Telehealth follow-ups make healthcare accessible to people in remote or underserved areas, providing them with quality care options.
Reduced Exposure to Illness Telehealth follow-ups help reduce exposure to illness by limiting the number of in-person visits needed for ongoing care.
Time and Cost Savings Virtual follow-ups save patients money on travel, parking, and childcare, making healthcare more affordable and convenient.
Easy Access to Specialist Care Telehealth makes it easier to connect with specialists who may not be available locally, improving patient outcomes.
How Telehealth Follow-Up Appointments Work
Telehealth follow-ups typically involve a virtual video call between a healthcare provider and a patient. Providers review symptoms, discuss test results, and adjust medications as needed. This process allows patients to receive quality care and guidance without physically going to a clinic.
Some follow-up appointments may also include reviewing data from wearable devices, such as heart rate monitors. These tools help providers track vital signs and assess progress remotely.
Common Conditions Monitored Through Telehealth Follow-Ups
Chronic Illnesses Telehealth follow-ups help manage chronic illnesses, like diabetes and hypertension. Providers can track symptoms, discuss lifestyle changes, and adjust medications.
Mental Health Care Virtual follow-ups allow mental health professionals to check in with patients regularly, providing therapy and medication management.
Post-Surgical Recovery Telehealth follow-ups help post-surgical patients avoid infection risks. Providers assess recovery, wound healing, and pain management from a distance.
Medication Management Telehealth helps patients and providers discuss any medication side effects or dosage adjustments needed, especially for new prescriptions.
Post-Hospital Discharge Virtual follow-ups help patients recently discharged from hospitals monitor recovery, ensuring smooth transitions and reducing readmission risks.
Improving Patient Adherence Through Telehealth Follow-Ups
Regular follow-up appointments play a critical role in medication adherence and lifestyle changes. Telehealth makes it easier for patients to attend these follow-ups without logistical challenges.
With telehealth, reminders and follow-up scheduling are automated, helping patients stay on track with their treatment. Providers can also quickly identify potential non-adherence issues and address them promptly.
Overcoming Challenges in Telehealth Follow-Up Care
While telehealth follow-ups offer many benefits, they also come with challenges. One main concern is the digital divide, which affects patients without reliable internet access. Bridging this gap is essential to making telehealth follow-ups accessible to all.
Data privacy is another important issue. Providers must use secure telehealth platforms that protect patient information and comply with privacy laws.
Providers also need training to ensure they offer quality care through telehealth. Effective virtual care requires a different skill set than traditional, in-person visits.
The Role of Technology in Enhancing Telehealth Follow-Up Care
Advanced technology enhances the quality and convenience of telehealth follow-up appointments. For example, wearable devices allow patients to share real-time health data with their providers. These devices track heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs, providing valuable insights.
Artificial intelligence (AI) also enhances telehealth follow-ups. AI tools analyze data to detect patterns and predict potential health issues, allowing for proactive care. AI-powered chatbots can answer basic questions and provide support, improving patient experience.
Mobile apps are another vital tool in telehealth follow-ups. These apps allow patients to manage appointments, view medical records, and receive medication reminders, all from their smartphones.
Success Stories: Real-Life Impact of Telehealth Follow-Up Care
Many patients report positive experiences with telehealth follow-ups. For example, a diabetic patient may find it easier to attend regular check-ins through telehealth, leading to better blood sugar management.
Telehealth follow-ups have also improved mental health care access. Patients with anxiety or depression can attend therapy sessions without leaving home, reducing missed appointments.
In post-surgical care, telehealth follow-ups have lowered complication rates. Patients recover better at home, with providers monitoring progress remotely and addressing issues as they arise.
The Future of Telehealth for Follow-Up Appointments
The future of telehealth follow-ups is promising, with technology continuing to improve remote care quality. Wearable devices, mobile health apps, and AI-driven insights will further personalize telehealth follow-up care.
As telehealth services expand, healthcare providers will likely offer more comprehensive virtual follow-up care options. Patients can expect even greater convenience, accuracy, and responsiveness from telehealth in the coming years.
Virtual group sessions may also emerge as a popular telehealth option, particularly for chronic disease management. Group telehealth sessions allow patients to connect with others facing similar health challenges, fostering support and community.
Final Thoughts: Telehealth Follow-Ups as a Lasting Solution
Telehealth follow-up appointments offer a lasting solution for accessible, patient-centered healthcare. By making follow-up care convenient and reducing barriers, telehealth is transforming healthcare delivery.
As telehealth technology and accessibility improve, follow-up appointments will continue to play a critical role in patient outcomes. This new era of healthcare prioritizes convenience, efficiency, and quality, ensuring that more patients receive the care they need. Why health insurance with OPD covers are growing popular in India?
India has seen a sharp increase in demand for health insurance in recent years, especially for plans that cover the outpatient department (OPD). Why is OPD coverage health insurance becoming more and more popular in India? This tendency is influenced by a number of factors that reflect shifting consumer choices and healthcare demands.
Tumblr media
First, one important factor is the increase in healthcare expenses. People are becoming more conscious of the financial strain they can experience in the absence of proper coverage as medical costs rise, particularly for outpatient procedures. Why is OPD-covered health insurance becoming more and more popular in India? Many consumers are aware that they are susceptible to large out-of-pocket fees for consultations, diagnostic testing, and prescription drugs because typical health insurance coverage frequently only cover hospitalization costs. Insurance products that include OPD coverage provide thorough financial protection that offers a greater variety of healthcare services.
Second, the necessity for regular medical consultations has increased due to the rising incidence of chronic diseases and lifestyle-related health problems. The simplicity of OPD coverage becomes crucial as more people need continuous treatments and routine checkups. This has caused customers to look for health insurance plans that will accommodate their outpatient requirements, therefore many people are curious as to why health insurance plans with OPD coverage are becoming more and more common in India.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 epidemic has changed the way that people think about wellbeing and health. The crisis brought to light the significance of easily accessible medical services, such as outpatient care. Because of this, the emphasis has shifted from hospitalization alone to a more comprehensive approach to health, which has increased interest in insurance plans that pay for outpatient department visits. The insurers are reacting by creating regulations that support preventative care in addition to hospital stays, which satisfies changing consumer demands.
Furthermore, there has been a notable improvement in health insurance product education and awareness. People are actively looking for plans that give OPD benefits as they become more aware of the subtleties of health policy. In order to demystify the advantages of OPD coverage, insurers are also using targeted marketing techniques to promote these plans.
In conclusion, there are several factors influencing the growing popularity of health insurance with OPD coverage in India, including the impact of the pandemic, the prevalence of chronic diseases, escalating healthcare expenditures, and more consumer knowledge. The trend is anticipated to continue as more people come to understand the importance of comprehensive health insurance that covers OPD benefits, influencing the direction of health coverage in India going forward.
