Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Drugs are a hell of a drug. There isn’t a substance that Raoul Duke and Dr Gonzo can’t swallow, smoke, or snort as they tear through the Las Vegas strip and sanity itself. Raoul is there to allegedly cover first a motorcycle race and then a police officers’ convention, though precious little journalism takes place in their drug-fueled haze. Instead, we observe the pair like anthropologists studying a previously uncontacted culture through their manic and zonked out behaviors as Raoul himself offers a postmortem on the counterculture movement of the 1960s and its ultimate failure in his mind. He and Dr Gonzo are, by his approximations, strange anomalies in society, not fit for mass production. Yet even as he offers sagelike musings on the nature of things, he often is barely able to function in any sense. Terry Gilliam to his part offers both sides of the coin. In amusing and jarring beats, the audience are brought into the world of Raoul’s perception, seeing bats flying overhead or a room of people in a bar suddenly transformed into bloodthirsty reptiles. Floors animate and faces become distorted and alien. It’s a bad trip. And yet other times the camera remains locked down and distant, trying to observe the joint chaos unfolding between the two men independent of one another. All told it’s a frenetic roller coaster that whips along with precious little regard for anyone in question. Tobey Maguire’s Hitchhiker may only appear in two scenes, but in actuality we are the ones being kidnapped and ranted at in manic fashion.

The poor bastards who had to clean up those hotel rooms. As they tear through first the Mint Hotel and then the Flamingo, the suites that Dr Gonzo and Raoul inhabit become exquisite nightmare-pieces of production design. Everything is at once crusty and oozy, walls slathered in room service ketchup and furniture upended and destroyed. Televisions are legion, ever showing staticky images of warfare of B-movies. And the American flag is omnipresent, as this dissection of American ennui is still fixated on the Stars and Stripes. None of it is ever explained, as not even the perpetrators can recall the events leading to any of it, but it’s an ever changing and ever more dense environment.
