Maine wasn’t sure how long she had been sleeping, but something was... different when she woke up. Instead of the hard floor of the music room against her back, and cold chains around her wrists, she was laying on something soft, and a blanket was wrapped around her. 

She sat up, and instantly regretted it. She had a headache and it hurt like hell. She groaned, laying back down slowly. Missouri’s couch. She was on his couch now. 

He must have heard her because he was by her side in an instant. “Hey, how are you feeling? You didn’t look like you were doing well, and then you passed out.” 

Without saying anything, she grabbed a pillow and smacked him with it. 

“Owww.” Missouri stumbled backward, then regained his balance and chuckled. “I suppose I deserve that.” 

“Yes, yes you do,” Maine said bitterly, looking at him. Which was a mistake. It was really really hard to be mad at that face. She rolled her eyes. “Get me something for this headache, maybe I’ll forgive you.” 

“Alright.” Missouri walked away, coming back a moment later with a glass of water and some mild pain medicine. She took them, while he spoke to her. “It’s done snowing. You can leave once the roads are clear and safe.” 

“Great. But I’m calling Cara, she may be worried. I ought to tell her.” 

Missouri’s smile faded just a bit. “What all are you going to tell her..?” 

“Everything, but I guess I can leave out your little possessive episode, see as you’ll make it up to me somehow.” He always told her that after even so much as offending her, and it often worked. She stared blankly at him until he answered. 

“Yeah, yes of course.” He kissed her quickly, smiling at her. “It will never happen again. I would never hurt you.” 

Apparently never meant at least once a week. 

After that every little thing set him off, screaming at her. And she’d shout back. Until someone in a neighboring apartment knocked on the door, threatening to call the cops and Maine would grab her bag and storm away, or until something bad happened to her and Missouri would beg to be forgiven. 

And she usually would. Because the rest of the relationship was a bit like heaven. 

Walks through town, and slow kisses in the dark. Going out with their friends, or cuddling on the couch watching a move. Shopping days, and helping him cook. Being held in someone’s arms and feeling loved for the first time since her mom died. 

On the other hand... 

There was him getting mad over something stupid. Yelling at her, like her dad did. Threatening her with a kitchen knife. Or hitting her. Once even walking toward her and her backing up. Till her back hit the wall. Grabbing her hand and pinning to to the wall and stabbing her finger. Him watching the blood run down her hand, and down her arm. Dropping the knife, and kissing the tears that ran down her cheeks. Sorry, so sorry, and please forgive me. 

She had, in word. But it stuck in her mind forever. 

The relationship was toxic, and not going anywhere at this point. 

But she was terrified to break it off.
