NEET or Dirty? Understanding the Exam Marking Controversy
The NEET UG 2024 results have sparked significant controversy, with the National Testing Agency (NTA) finding itself in the spotlight, particularly over the scores of 718 and 719. To unravel this issue, let's delve into the marking scheme of NEET UG 2024 and the surrounding disputes.
Tumblr media
The Release of NEET UG 2024 Results
On June 4, the NTA published the results for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, Undergraduate (NEET-UG), a crucial exam for admission into medical, dental, and AYUSH courses in India. The results quickly attracted attention due to an unprecedented number of candidates achieving perfect scores of 720/720. This year, 67 candidates secured the top spot nationwide, all attaining All India Rank 1.
The 718 and 719 Score Confusion
The controversy centers around candidates who scored 718 or 719 marks, which some critics argue are implausible within the exam's framework. The NTA clarified this irregularity, stating that compensatory marks were awarded to certain candidates. A committee of experts was convened to address grievances related to inadequate time allocation, assessing candidates' answering efficiency and determining appropriate compensation.
The NTA also pointed out that the number of candidates for the 2024 exam increased by nearly 300,000 compared to 2023, naturally resulting in higher scores. Additionally, they noted that the 2024 NEET exam was "comparatively easier" than previous years.
Marking Scheme of NEET UG 2024
The NEET UG exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) across four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, and Botany. Each subject has 50 questions, with a maximum of 45 questions considered for evaluation. Students answer 180 questions within 3 hours and 20 minutes.
Correct Answers: Awarded four marks (+4).
Incorrect Answers: Deduct one mark (-1).
Unanswered Questions: Receive no marks (0).
Multiple Correct Options: Candidates receive four marks (+4) if they mark any correct option.
All Options Correct: All attempts receive four marks (+4).
Emerging Concerns and Legal Challenges
Concerns over the NEET UG results led to at least two petitions in separate High Courts and a plea to the Supreme Court on June 1, urging a re-evaluation due to alleged question paper leaks. These legal challenges highlight the growing dissatisfaction and perceived discrepancies in the examination process.
Conclusion
The NEET UG 2024 controversy underscores significant issues within the examination system, particularly regarding score allocation and the fairness of the marking scheme. As the NTA justifies its decisions and addresses grievances, the debate continues, echoing the concerns of students and stakeholders about the integrity of one of India's most crucial entrance exams.

NEET UG 2024: New Tie-Breaking Rules
This year, NTA is implementing updated tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024: Old Rule: Previously, tie-breaking considered scores in biology, chemistry, and physics sequentially. If a tie remained, negative marks were factored in, followed by age, with the older candidate receiving the higher rank. New Rule: Now, tie-breaking prioritizes higher marks in Biology, then Chemistry, and finally Physics. If a tie persists, eligible candidates will be selected through a computer-generated draw without human intervention. Difference Between NEET 2024 Qualifying Cut Off and Admission Cut Off
It's important for NEET candidates to understand that the NEET cut off marks for qualifying and admission are distinct. The NEET Qualifying Cut Off represents the minimum marks needed to qualify for the exam. Meeting this threshold makes candidates eligible for state and central counseling processes for admission to medical colleges. The NEET qualifying percentile is set by the NTA. On the other hand, the NEET Admission Cut Off signifies the minimum marks or scores required for admission into MBBS or BDS courses at specific medical or dental colleges in India. This cut off is determined by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and state authorities.

Andariki Aarogyam Scheme and Swasthya Vidya Vahini: Transforming Healthcare in Andhra Pradesh
Tumblr media
The Andariki Aarogyam Scheme and Swasthya Vidya Vahini (SVV) program, introduced by former Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu, have significantly contributed to improving healthcare services in Andhra Pradesh. The Andariki Aarogyam Scheme focuses on providing health insurance facilities to residents who are not covered under any central government welfare schemes. On the other hand, the SVV program aims to develop a disease-free state by educating students and creating awareness about various health-related topics. These initiatives have been pivotal in transforming the healthcare landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
The Andariki Aarogyam Scheme, also known as the Health Insurance Scheme, was launched on January 1, 2017, by N Chandrababu Naidu and his party political leaders to improve the healthcare sector in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP scheme offers health insurance coverage to all residents who are not beneficiaries of any central government welfare scheme. It has gained recognition as one of the best health insurance schemes globally, according to statistics released by the state government. Enrollment for the scheme has already commenced, allowing eligible individuals to register with the necessary documentation. The registration process is completed upon payment of the initial two-month premium amount. The scheme aims to benefit around 1 lakh people in Andhra Pradesh, and the state government has allocated 160 Crores for its successful implementation. The affordable premium of Rs. 100 makes it accessible to residents who are not part of any other insurance scheme. The SVV program, launched by Shri N Chandrababu Naidu in Vijayawada, focuses on promoting public health and healthy living habits through health education. The program involves students pursuing medicine, nursing, home science, and psychology, who are divided into 446 teams. These teams spent 10 months visiting villages and creating awareness on 10 different health-related themes. Search the TDP website of your district for more flash news on these schemes and the contributions of TDP to the people of AP.
The SVV program operates under the coordination of the health, medical, and family welfare departments. It engages students from medical, dental, Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy), nursing, and home science colleges. With a total of 24 medical colleges in the state having 15,000 students and 15 dental colleges with 5,000 students, the program benefits from a strong student participation base. With a rural population of approximately 3.5 crores and each district having an average population of 25-30 lakh, the SVV program targets the grassroots level. The program effectively utilizes 277 mobile medical units that provide services at nodal points, typically at gram panchayat headquarters, every month. During the launch of the SVV program, Shri N Chandrababu Naidu interacted with the participating students and tested their knowledge of diseases and health awareness. He emphasized the importance of commitment and encouraged them to strive for excellence in their endeavours. The program launch witnessed the presence of Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, Special Principal Secretary of Health Poonam Malakondaiah, and other dignitaries. The Andariki Aarogyam Scheme and Swasthya Vidya Vahini program have significantly contributed to transforming healthcare services in Andhra Pradesh. The Andariki Aarogyam Scheme ensures access to health insurance for residents not covered under central government welfare schemes, enhancing the overall healthcare sector of the state. Simultaneously, the SVV program focuses on health education and awareness, targeting students to create a disease-free state by promoting healthy living habits. Examine the TDP website for more development andlive updates of TDP initiatives.
