Allah calls Himself Al-Hayy— The Ever-Living— on five occasions in the Quran. Al-Hayy is the One who is everlasting and undying, the One from whom all life arises. Al-Hayy is the One who was, is, and will always be alive!

The Everlasting, The Living

Hayy comes from the root haa-yaa-yaa, which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to live. The second main meaning is to become apparent or distinct. The third is to revive, vitalize and call into being and the fourth main meaning is to be sound, or whole.

This root appears 184 times in the Quran in 12 derived forms. Examples of these forms are yuhyee (“grants life”), hayyan (“alive”) and al hayaatu (” the life”).

Al-Hayy is the One who has a continuous life with no beginning or end. His Life and all His Attributes are perfect. His life is self-sustaining and has no external source, whereas our lives have been granted to us by the Creator. Al-Hayy is the One who calls all life into being and He is the source to which life will return!

Al-Hayy Himself says: . . And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice [Quran, 20:111] And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die..[Quran, 25:58] He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [Quran, 40:65]

The Perfect Life

Al-Hayy is most often combined with the Name Al-Qayyoom, the Sustainer. This is a beautiful combination of the perfection of Allah’s Attributes and His Actions. Al-Hayy means the One who possesses the perfect living and so all His attributes are perfect: His hearing, His sight, His Beauty etc. Man’s life is imperfect from all sides: our hearing, sight, speech and actions are all imperfect. All the attributes of Allah are perfect, because any defiency in attributes would come from weakness of life and His life is perfect!

How Can You Live By This Name?

1. Rely upon the Ever-Living. And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt with His praise… [Quran, 25:58] Each source of our problems and distress lies in this world, whether it is money, family etc and these will all perish one day. This ayah gives us a beautiful reflection: while you put your trust in Allah, really realize how great the One is in who you trust. Use your imagination, go back in time for 100 years, 1000 years, a million or a billion years and Allah was alive. In the same way think about the future, so feel the glory that belongs to Him.

2. Motivate yourself to do good. The ayah continues: And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted. [Quran, 25:58] As you leave all your matters to Al-Hayy, realizing His greatness and express this awareness by tasbeeh (saying subhanallah) coming from your lips, also take action with your limbs. Let Al-Hayy motivate you to do good deeds. Whereas people have not been with you all of your life, being able to see and hear all your bad deeds, Al-Hayy was, is and will be there with His perfect hearing and seeing which are part of His perfect life!

3. Recite Ayatul Kursi after each prayer and before going to sleep. In this greatest ayah of the Quran the Name Al-Hayy is mentioned and many virtues are narrated about ayatul Kursi. In each sentence one or two attributes of Allah are mentioned: . everytime you recite this ayah reflect on the Attributes of Allah and how they all emerge from His perfect Life: He is Al-Hayy!

4. Ask Al-Hayy. When the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was faced with a serious difficulty, he would say: Yaa Hayyu, Yaa Qayyum (O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One)! By Your mercy I seek help

سْتَغِيْث أَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ قَيُّوْمُ يَا حَيُّ يَا [Sunan At-Tirmidhee]

5. Be comforted by Al-Hayy.

Be comforted by Al-Hayy and turn to Him only when you lose things around you and know that He will always be there. When you are treated unjustly and see injustice around you, do your best to help according to the laws of Al-Hayy but also know that the injustice of every single person will be a cause of failure in the Hereafter. So guard for injustice from your own hands as well! And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice. [Quran, 20:111]

6. Turn to Al-Hayy for daily-life guidance.

The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam oncementioned to Faatimah radiyallaahu ‘anha to recite the following supplication morning and evening: Yaa Hayyu yaa qayyoom bi-rahmatika astagheeth, aslih lee shaa-nee kullahu, wa laa takilnee ilaa nafsee tarfata ‘ayn – O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One, I seek assistance through the means of your mercy, correct for me all my affairs and do not entrust me to my nafs (myself) for the moment of a blink of an eye[An-Nasa’i] If Al-Hayy would even leave you to yourself for a split-second, you would perish!

im sorry to bother you i just have a question. do jewish people have like superstition(?) to follow to banish ghosts or evil spirit or bad luck and the like? like christians do holy water, muslims do ayatul kursi, various indigenous religions burns herbs, what do jewish people do? im planning a fic involving ghosts and this far im not sure i can trust google tbh every article i read says different things..

Ooooh this is such a fun question! Ok so caveat, I’m Ashkenazi so I can only really answer from that pov, and even then every country would have had their own twists on folklore and traditions.

The reason you might be having a hard time finding something is that (and again, one jew, one experience, only one opinion) we don’t really have ghosts like that. By ghosts i mean a benevolent spirit whos a remnant of a soul, because souls always move on. Your options for “reincarnation” would be fresh new start as a baby, or reborn as an animal or object searching for the one person who can give you forgiveness and/or help you complete a vow/mitzvah.

So like, a popular superstition was that if a stray cat is following you, its really the soul of someone who wronged you and you should face it and say “mochel loch” (lit: i forgive you) three times, so that it can move on and leave you alone.

If you want an evil spirit, you dont have to use a Jewish method of banishment because according to jewish tradition spirits/demons can actually be any religion and the method of banishment would correspond with their own chosen faith. Mostly i think we used like. Conversation. To get them to leave? Ngl i dont know much about it, but the idea of the jewish kid sitting down and debating the demon into leaving is delightful.

Bad Luck, which we would call Ayin Hora (lit. evil eye) has lots of methods attached to it. Common one that pretty much everyone i know has heard of is these little red string bracelets. The origin is probably related to the yom kippur service but im not looking it up rn. Thats preemptive tho, you put it on new babies or cute kids or brides to ward off bad luck before it can arrive. Theres also lead pouring, which is very controversial because it doesnt really have a basis in anything.

Honestly i couldve given one answer and its “gather a minyan (group of ten Jewish adults (traditionally men)) and daven as a group in the place thats causing trouble”. Bring a rabbi if you think the demon is going to be good at debate, bring a yeshiva student if you just want to annoy it into leaving.

Glorified and Highly Exalted is He above what they claim!

The seven heavens, the earth, and all those in them glorify Him. There is not a single thing that does not glorify His praises—but you ˹simply˺ cannot comprehend their glorification. He is indeed Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving."

Commentary:

Understanding of the Kursi "the Courses" is the next step on the Mi'raj, the Prophet's Ladder.

At the culmination of the Seven Heavens, also called the Seven Days by the Torah is what is called the Taj or the Keter at the very top. Taj represents the ability to perceive all of creation as one divine phenomenon, including the mind that perceives it. To reach the Taj one must understand the Kursi. Its virtues are extolled upon in Baqarah.

What are the virtues of Ayatul Kursi? The Throne Verse?

Ayatul Kursi is the greatest verse in the Quran. It is a protection from the jinn. It is never recited in a house but the Shaytan leaves. It contains the greatest name of Allah.

Concerning the fact that it includes the greatest name of Allah, Imam Ahmad said:

“It was narrated that Asma bint Yazid ibn al-Sakan said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say about these two ayahs (interpretation of the meanings) -- “Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists…” [al-Baqarah 2:255] and “Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.] Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)” [Al 'Imran 3:1-2] – that they contain the greatest name of Allah.’” This was  also narrated by Abu Dawud from Musaddid and by al-Tirmidhi from ‘Ali ibn Khashram, and by Ibn Majah from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, all three of them narrating from ‘Isa ibn Yunus from ‘Ubayd-Allah ibn Abi Ziyad . Al-Tirmidhi said: it is sahih hasan.

 It was narrated in a marfu’ report that Abu Umamah said:

“The greatest name of Allah, which if He is called by it, He responds, is in three (surahs): Surat al-Baqarah, Al ‘Imran and Ta-Ha.” Hisham, i.e., Ibn ‘Ammar, the khatib of Damascus, said: “In al-Baqarah, it is ‘Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exist’  [al-Baqarah 2:255 – interpretation of the meaning]. In Al ‘Imran it is ‘Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.] Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)’ [Al ‘Imran 3:1-2 – interpretation of the meaning]. And in Ta-Ha it is ‘And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)’ [Ta-Ha 20:111].”

Because numbers areused we need to analyze the above Quran Verses in Gematria:

v. 42: The Number is 8427, ז‎ףדב‎ , zfdev, "A floating dove."

v. 43: The Number is 3577, ‎להעז‎‎, "dares",

v. 44: The Number is 8759, ףז‎הט, fazhat, "to open the crack and find the gold."

Keter or Kursi "the Crown" is not the province of men who do not seek the fulfillment of Allah, to know Him from the ground to the cieling as His very name dictates, He has made a universe without cracks:

50:1-6:

Qãf. By the glorious Quran! ˹All will be resurrected,˺ yet the deniers are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves ˹warning of resurrection˺. So the disbelievers say, “This is an astonishing thing! ˹Will we be returned to life,˺ when we are dead and reduced to dust? Such a return is impossible.” We certainly know what the earth consumes of them ˹after their death˺, and with us is a well-preserved Record.1 In fact, they reject the truth when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state. Did they never observe the sky above them: how We built it and beautified it; and it has no cracks;

As both the Torah and the Quran say we must pursue the gold at the top of human accomplishment, a world that does not destroy what is beautiful in pursuit of dominance and wealth. One who attains to ways to do this achieves Isra, the "straightest path" and earns the Taj, the Eighth Step on the Mi'raj.

This root appears 184 times in the Quran in 12 derived forms. Examples of these forms are yuhyee (“grants life”), hayyan (“alive”) and al hayaatu (” the life”).

Al-Hayy is the One who has a continuous life with no beginning or end. His Life and all His Attributes are perfect. His life is self-sustaining and has no external source, whereas our lives have been granted to us by the Creator. Al-Hayy is the One who calls all life into being and He is the source to which life will return!

Al-Hayy Himself says: . . And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice [Quran, 20:111] And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die..[Quran, 25:58] He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [Quran, 40:65]

The Perfect Life

Al-Hayy is most often combined with the Name Al-Qayyoom, the Sustainer. This is a beautiful combination of the perfection of Allah’s Attributes and His Actions. Al-Hayy means the One who possesses the perfect living and so all His attributes are perfect: His hearing, His sight, His Beauty etc. Man’s life is imperfect from all sides: our hearing, sight, speech and actions are all imperfect. All the attributes of Allah are perfect, because any defiency in attributes would come from weakness of life and His life is perfect!

How Can You Live By This Name?

1. Rely upon the Ever-Living. And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt with His praise… [Quran, 25:58] Each source of our problems and distress lies in this world, whether it is money, family etc and these will all perish one day. This ayah gives us a beautiful reflection: while you put your trust in Allah, really realize how great the One is in who you trust. Use your imagination, go back in time for 100 years, 1000 years, a million or a billion years and Allah was alive. In the same way think about the future, so feel the glory that belongs to Him.

2. Motivate yourself to do good. The ayah continues: And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted. [Quran, 25:58] As you leave all your matters to Al-Hayy, realizing His greatness and express this awareness by tasbeeh (saying subhanallah) coming from your lips, also take action with your limbs. Let Al-Hayy motivate you to do good deeds. Whereas people have not been with you all of your life, being able to see and hear all your bad deeds, Al-Hayy was, is and will be there with His perfect hearing and seeing which are part of His perfect life!

3. Recite Ayatul Kursi after each prayer and before going to sleep. In this greatest ayah of the Quran the Name Al-Hayy is mentioned and many virtues are narrated about ayatul Kursi. In each sentence one or two attributes of Allah are mentioned: . everytime you recite this ayah reflect on the Attributes of Allah and how they all emerge from His perfect Life: He is Al-Hayy!

4. Ask Al-Hayy. When the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was faced with a serious difficulty, he would say: Yaa Hayyu, Yaa Qayyum (O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One)! By Your mercy I seek help

سْتَغِيْث أَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ قَيُّوْمُ يَا حَيُّ يَا [Sunan At-Tirmidhee]

5. Be comforted by Al-Hayy.

Be comforted by Al-Hayy and turn to Him only when you lose things around you and know that He will always be there. When you are treated unjustly and see injustice around you, do your best to help according to the laws of Al-Hayy but also know that the injustice of every single person will be a cause of failure in the Hereafter. So guard for injustice from your own hands as well! And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice. [Quran, 20:111]

6. Turn to Al-Hayy for daily-life guidance.

The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam oncementioned to Faatimah radiyallaahu ‘anha to recite the following supplication morning and evening: Yaa Hayyu yaa qayyoom bi-rahmatika astagheeth, aslih lee shaa-nee kullahu, wa laa takilnee ilaa nafsee tarfata ‘ayn – O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One, I seek assistance through the means of your mercy, correct for me all my affairs and do not entrust me to my nafs (myself) for the moment of a blink of an eye[An-Nasa’i] If Al-Hayy would even leave you to yourself for a split-second, you would perish!

O Allah, Al-Hayy, we know that You are the One who is everlasting and perfect alive. Bless us with reliance on You, make us realize Your Perfection of Life and so of all Your attributes and guide us to live by them. I combined many different songs that include the upliftingness of arab individuals and general songs as well, along with heart-breaking songs and illustrating the experiences of Arabs. I also included songs that perpetuate Orientalism, along with the history and the visual aspects (music videos) that expand from the song. Lastly, I included prayers that Muslims follow in Islam. Specifically "Ayatul Kursi", I learned, means "protection" and that stood out to me especially considering the class title and how much in various ways the East along with Arab persons, are constantly attacked and dehumanized by the world of the West.
