For several decades the Nigerian community has faced an austere energy crisis which has been difficult to manage. Several methods claimed to have been employed to solve this crisis constantly proves abortive. Today i visited Awolowo road in Ikoyi, Lagos Island which is in the South west of Nigeria,West Africa to find out some of the problems lack of energy has created in the environment.
One would think that Ikoyi which is a highbrow area in Lagos will be exempted from this situation but this is not the case. Awolowo road is a major road in Ikoyi and residents/business owners have been forced to rely majorly on different forms of generating power which is an impediment on their business and comfort.
Businesses spend twice as much as they should on fuel to keep them running. This is a solution for them but at the same time, the hazards it creates in the environment cannot be ignored. There are hundreds of people who's health are impaired from the fumes released by these generators. Reports claim that some have lost their lives, they go to sleep and do not wake up as a result of illnesses they unknowingly developed from the emission of fumes that is spread by the power generating systems.
This waste also causes climate change which is a major contributing factor to high level of sea rise that has been predicted by world organizations.

Pictured above are overloaded electric poles and transformers on Awolowo road, Ikoyi and Falomo Lagos, Nigeria. These types of connections are not only common to these areas, they are found all around the city of Lagos. Without further explanations, I could only imagine the damages that they can cause to the environment and after the conversation i had with a shop attendant my assumptions were confirmed. Moses(the shop attendant), expressed his concerns about the explosions that may occur as a result the poles and transformers being overloaded which can start a fire that can affect buildings around and passersby. When this happens, the power goes out completely and stays like that untill the electricity company comes to fix them. This of course doesn't happen immediately,it can take days, weeks or even months. Most times when the delay in fixing it takes too long, those affected begin to find solutions by themselves. They start creating illegal connections that can be hazardous to them and to other people.
