Top Ice Hockey Players in Australia
Tumblr media
Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score goals.
The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually fielding six players at a time: one goalie, and five players who skate the span of the ice trying to control the puck and score goals against the opposing team. There are many ice hockey players in Australia, as the sport begins to get the recognition it deserves here, so we have listed some of the best Australian ice hockey players of all time.
Greg Oddy
Tumblr media
Greg Oddy is a former Australian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Adelaide Adrenaline in the Australian Ice Hockey League since 2008. Oddy was born on July 24, 1980 in Adelaide. He is the record scorer of the Australian national ice hockey team. Gregg Oddy began his hockey career in his hometown with Adelaide Avalanche, where he played in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) until 2008. With Avalanche he won the Australian Championship in 2000 and 2001 and the VIP Cup in 2007 as the winner of the main round of the AIHL. In the game-free Australian summer, which falls in the winter half of the northern hemisphere, he played from 1998 to 2001 with the La Ronge Ice Wolves in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , in 2002/03 with the Romford Raiders in the English Premier Ice Hockey League , the second-highest British Division, and 2006/07 at HYC Herentals in Belgium Ice Hockey Eredivisie . After Adelaide Avalanche had to stop playing for financial reasons in June 2008, he moved to the successor club Adelaide Adrenaline, which in July 2008 initially took Avalanche's place in the AIHL under the name Adelaide A's. With the A's he won the Goodall Cup in 2009, which has been awarded to the AIHL master since 2002. In 2003 and 2012 he was top scorer of the AIHL. He has been the team captain of the Adelaide Adrenaline since 2011. In early 2018, he was elected to the AIHL All-Star team and then ended his career before the start of the 2018 season.
Lliam Webster
Tumblr media
Lliam Webster is an Australian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Melbourne Ice in the Australian Ice Hockey League since 2004. Webster was born February 19, 1986 in Melbourne. Lliam Webster began his hockey career in his hometown with the Melbourne Jets, for which he was active from 2001 to 2003. Since 2004 he has been with Melbourne Ice in the Australian Ice Hockey League in the summer half-year, winter in the southern hemisphere. He also played from 2003 to 2005 for the Canadian junior teams Selkirk Steelers from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the Aurora Tigers and Thornhill Thunderbirds from the Ontario Junior Hockey League. The attacker then played for two winters for Vaasan Sport, for which he played in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 season each in a game in Mestis, the second Finnish professional game class, on which ice cream was. Mostly, however, he played for his U20 juniors in the second highest Finnish junior division. The 2008/09 winter season was spent in Webster Pferdeturm Towers in the fourth-class hockey Regional. For the Lower Saxony, he scored 31 scorer points in 18 games, including twelve goals. Since 2009 he has played exclusively at Melbourne Ice in the AIHL and won the Goodall Cup with his team in 2010 for the first time, the Australian championship title. In the 2010 season, the Australian international was just as team captain of his club since 2014. In 2011, 2012 and 2017 he won the Goodall Cup again with the Melbourne Ice. In 2011 he also won the H. Newman Reid Trophy with the team as the winner of the main round. In 2018 he was elected to the AIHL All-Star team.
Nathan Walker
Tumblr media
Nathan Walker is a Welsh born Australian professional ice hockey forward who is currently playing under contract to the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). Walker was born on 7 February 1994. Walker, who was born in Wales, grew up in Australia and first played ice hockey there. He moved to the Czech Republic in 2007 to further his career, and joined the junior program of HC VĂtkovice, a member of the Czech Extraliga. He first played for the senior team in 2011, becoming the first Australian ice hockey player to play for a professional senior team in Europe. Along with HC VĂtkovice, Walker was loaned to several lower-level Czech teams.
In 2013 Walker signed with the Youngstown Phantoms of the junior United States Hockey League, moving to North America for the first time. He attended the training camp of the Washington Capitals in 2013 and signed with their AHL affiliate Hershey. Walker represents Australia internationally, and first played for them at the 2011 IIHF World Championship Division II tournament, where he helped his team win their group and earn a promotion to Division I for the following year. Passed over in the previous two NHL Entry Drafts, Walker was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the first Australian selected in an NHL draft. After a few years in the AHL, Walker joined the Capitals in 2017, the first Australian to play in the NHL. He was placed on waivers and claimed by the Edmonton Oilers in the same season but was reacquired by the Capitals after only two games with the Oilers and won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.

60 Years of Public Art in Edmonton
Tumblr media
L: Al D. Girvan, 1966 R: Dwayne Martineau, 2012
It all began with a “spaghetti tree”. When Edmonton city planners commissioned The Migrants for the 1957 incarnation of City Hall, they sparked a lively six-decade conversation.
The bronze sculpture, which remains as one of 64 artworks at City Hall, formed the kernel of a collection that now contains 239 artworks by 302 artists. Of that, nearly 70% of the artists are local (or were at the time of selection). Our collection spans a myriad of mediums rendered in ancient techniques like mosaic as well as cutting-edge 21st century technology.
The City of Edmonton implemented C458c -  Percent to Encourage and Provide Art in Public Areas Policy – aka “Percent for Art” – 25 years ago, in order to ensure the new City Hall would contain artworks by, for, and about Edmontonians. The Migrants – temporarily slated for “retirement” – was re-installed on the west side of the building following an outcry from citizens saying they would miss the iconic artwork. Since then, the City of Edmonton Public Art Collection has grown exponentially. City projects – including LRT, recreation centres, police and fire stations, parks, streetscapes, renovations, bridges, libraries, sports facilities, transit centres (to name a few) – are catalysts for new artistic visions that continue to animate our conversations.
In 2017, the Edmonton Arts Council Public Art team installed six new artworks and are managing more than 20 new and ongoing projects. The Conservation team repaired, cleaned, and maintained dozens of artworks including restoration of the Norman Yates mural. The EAC was honoured to receive recognition from Americans for the Arts (Public Art Network Year in Review – Amiskwâcîw Wâskâyhkan Ihtâwin, Destiny Swiderski); Creative City Network of Canada (Public Art Award of Excellence – Tsa Tsa Ke K’e [Iron Foot Place], Alex Janvier) and the Edmonton Urban Design Awards (Award of Excellence, Urban Fragments - Amiskwâcîw Wâskâyhkan Ihtâwin, Destiny Swiderski; Award of Merit, Urban Fragments – Tsa Tsa Ke K’e [Iron Foot Place], Alex Janvier; Award of Merit, Community Projects - #YEGCanvas in partnership with Pattison Outdoor Advertising, various artists).
2018 promises to be just as busy!
Read on for profiles of the new art; join us in the new year for previews of Calder Library, ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞, Tawatinâ Bridge and more.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, Always, Even – April Dean (Paul Kane Park) This artwork connects park users to time and place as they enjoy the granite water feature in this downtown park. The words continuously flow around the water feature in a formally minimalist font, allowing an intimate experience of discovery across the white granite surface.
Tumblr media
Thing 1 & Thing 2 – Lisa Turner & Paul Bernhardt (West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre) Mysterious pink and green objects glow from the walls of the WEM Transit Centre – investigating the relationship between advertising, product design, and the objects we desire. The artists were inspired by the art’s location, adjacent to one of the world’s largest malls, and drew on theories of psychology and consumer product silhouettes to create these low relief panels.
Tumblr media
Turbulent – Jill Anholt (100 Street Funicular, Downtown) These turquoise metal ribbons are inspired by the swirling forms, and twisting, turning shapes that appear along the edges of water currents in the North Saskatchewan River. They are integrated onto the concrete benches at the funicular site and offer a playful opportunity for pedestrians to pause, sit, lounge, and have a face to face conversation with a friend or experience a chance meeting with a stranger.
Tumblr media
Heart of the Valley – Black Artifex (Whitemud Equine Learning Centre) This intricate, pyrographed mural is inspired by the history of the equine centre site and setting in the river valley. The designs and motifs incorporated throughout are inspired by “western aesthetics” such as leather tooling, wood craft, and branding. The artwork is burned directly into the cedar siding adjacent to the main entrance, inviting viewers to touch and explore.
Tumblr media
Esprit – Pierre Poussin (Alex Decoteau Park, Downtown) This red abstract sculpture celebrates the spirit of Alex Decoteau, Canada’s first Indigenous police officer; World War I veteran; Olympian, and first inductee to Edmonton’s Sports Hall of Fame. Composed of metal ribbons that intersect in fluidity, the sculpture evokes the silhouette of a man mid-sprint.
Tumblr media
Resonant Progression – Royden Mills (Terwillegar Off-Leash Area) This artwork by Edmonton sculptor Royden Mills, consists of three sculptures placed in conceptually linked sites in Terwillegar Park. The sculptural components link the viewer now with a sense of history and the sounds of nature, as well as inviting contemplation and play. Each sculpture - Potential, Resonant Point, and Beyond Listening, contains an acoustic element that animates the site.
Tumblr media
Borden Art Park Temporary Sculpture Loan Exhibition – Sandra Bromley, Kasie Campbell, Agnieszka Koziarz, Susan Owen Kagan This year, the sculptures featured within Borden Park changed. The new exhibition, featuring 11 artworks, represents more than 30 years of artmaking by women artists in Edmonton. The Temporary Sculpture Loan Program is part of the Edmonton Arts Council’s Transitory Art programming.
Tumblr media
#YEGCanvas 2017 – various artists throughout the City of Edmonton #YECanvas returned for a third year featuring 45 artworks from 42 Edmonton artists on billboards around Edmonton and LRT posters along the Capital and Metro Lines. The artworks will be rotated every two months – the second iteration begins during the week of December 25! Use the interactive map to create a holiday artventure!

Canada’s Top Builders Distinguished with the 15th Annual Avid Awards for Highest Homebuyer Ratings
TORONTO — In recognition of the best builders providing extraordinary customer experiences, Avid Ratings® Canada is proud to announce the winners of the 15th Annual Avid Awards. Homebuilders throughout North America were honoured with the prestigious awards for scoring highest with their customers on homebuying experience surveys. Award winners were chosen based on results received from some of Canada’s largest private builders and hundreds of small volume and custom builders from coast to coast. This year’s program had 722 qualifying builders from all over the United States and Canada and covers homebuyer data from January to December 2017.
“The winners of the 15th Annual Avid Awards represent a list of builders that have all excelled in setting the bar for homebuilding and for customer service in Canada,” said Tim Bailey, division president of Avid Ratings Canada. “Our goal is to provide homeowners with the security that their builder will not only meet, but exceed, their homebuying expectations. The Avid Awards recognize those builders that deliver on that mark.”
The Avid Awards are regarded as a trusted benchmark of customer service performance in the homebuilding industry. Avid Ratings has long been at the forefront of bringing transparency of builder performance to consumers by consumers since 1992. In order to determine the Avid Award winners, homebuilding companies are evaluated using Avid’s award-winning GoSurvey platform. Every homebuyer survey in Avid’s database is meticulously analyzed to determine each builder’s Avid Index Score, which is evaluated using scores from the total homebuying experience, the willingness to refer, and the actual number of recommendations a buyer has made.
“We are humbled and extremely proud to win the 2018 Avid Diamond Award for Small Volume Builder in Canada,” said Brenda Gould, Director of Marketing & Client Services at Lifestyle Homes Inc. “Our first priority will always be our valued clients, with this award validating our steadfast commitment to customer care and service.”
“We really mean it when we say ‘Living Better Starts Here’, and we’re so happy to see the results of our commitment to client satisfaction in our Avid reviews,” said Kristina Parkinson, creative director at Alair Homes.
Builders with the highest Avid Index Score in each category are presented with awards. Each award-winning company must score at or above the top 25th percentile in the United States or Canada to be recognized with an Avid Award.

A New Space for Art Discussion
By: Claire Lamb, Production Assistant.
Tumblr media
As a member of the production crew for this year’s festival I was prepared for the labour-intensive elements of the job. I knew that the long, odd, and somewhat unpredictable hours in the sun were what I had signed up for and that was what I was excited for. What I had not anticipated however were the personal and genuine interactions with each of the artists that the festival has allowed the opportunity for. I don’t think there is a single intern at the Works who hasn’t had a good individual conversation with at least one of the artists involved.
As a resident of Edmonton for several months out of the year I try to be as involved in the arts community as possible. Attending exhibitions, artist talks and slowly starting to recognize faces among the crowds is what I had become used to. As rewarding as that can be, it’s an entirely different environment for talking about art. Being a part of the Works Team felt like I was suddenly equipped to talk with the artists about the inner-workings and behind the scenes elements of the exhibitions in spaces that I couldn’t before. Especially during the pre-festival set up of the exhibitions on the legislature grounds. Whether it was transporting installation pieces for Kasie Campbell, moving all of Emmanuel Osahor’s plants for In Search of Eden from The Works Office to site or driving Yong Fei Guan’s sculptures across town; we were all physically involved in putting these exhibits together and it was humbling to get that recognition from each of the artists involved.
Even though we are all at different points in our artistic careers, we are all continually learning from each other and it really felt like we were all part of one large team.
About the author: Claire Lamb is a visual arts student, currently in her third year of studies at the Augustana campus of the University of Alberta in Camrose, Alberta. She has been an active participant of the Strathcona County Art scene for the past 5 years and her works have been chosen to be a part of the County’s temporary art collection on two occasions. She was awarded a Fine Arts scholarship for her entrance portfolio into the U of A and a continuing Fine Arts scholarship for her work at the end of her second year in the program. She has a keen interest in the theatre community and hopes to translate her skills as a visual artist to theatre design following her degree.
