"How was your day?" "I've had better. No lights tonight?" "You know, my mother used to tell me when I was a child that you shouldn't give up on the day, even at the end of it, 'cause... Well, she said that a whole day could be saved with just a smile." "Lukas, you've never had a girlfriend, have you?" "Tons." "Not one." "So many. Like, every other level, there is another lady friend. And there. See?" "There see what?" "Smile. Like my mom said." "This was not with you. This was at you." "I'll still take it." "You don't have your slate with you tonight." "Well, a cafeteria worker on my level told me that it was going to be cloudy this evening, so I..." "You came up anyway?" "Yeah, I came to see you."

I was on my way when I saw your lights in the sky. They’re gone now. Oh. They’re not gone. They’re just hiding.

Silo    [trailer]
Men and women live in a giant silo underground with several regulations which they believe are in place to protect them from the toxic and ruined world on the surface.
The first three episodes do a good job of introducing the main characters, and presenting the interesting dystopian world in which this series takes place.
But then it mainly turns into a relatively pedestrian crime-solving story, and intrigues about the power stucture inside the silo. While not uninteresting, it's not what the introduction of the series has promised.
You can probably argue that the indoctrination and the obedience is no doubt strong. But you still wonder why, in a population of 10,000 people, there isn't more upheaval sooner when, in a very short period of time, the sheriff and his wife "turn mad", there are suicides, and the long-serving and beloved mayor gets killed.
The people living in the silo also are skilled and knowledgeable. So it's not easy to accept why they accept the cult-like organisational structure, the knowledge suppression, weird rules (no magnifying glasses, no lifts), etc. Though that there's a surveillance apparatus involved doesn't come as a surprise.
I enjoy watching something that gives Rebecca Ferguson so much screen time. That David Oyelowo disappears early, and the focus is more on Common is unfortunate, since acting-wise he's a bit of a weak point.
A "relics bag" for a Pez dispenser is an amusing thought.
Season two will hopefully reveal more substantial facts about the past and the future of the silo.
