Today, as you read this [...], there are almost 2 million people locked away in one of the more than 5,000 prisons or jails that dot the American landscape. While they are behind bars, these incarcerated people can be found standing in line at their prison’s commissary waiting to buy some extra food or cleaning supplies that are often marked up to prices higher than what one would pay outside of those prison walls. [...] If they want to call a friend or family member, they need to pay for that as well. And almost everyone who works at a job while incarcerated, often for less than a dollar an hour, will find that the prison has taken a portion of their salary to pay for their cost of incarceration. [...] These policymakers and government officials also know that this captive population has no choice but to foot the bill [...] and that if they can’t be made to pay, their families can. In fact, a 2015 report led by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Forward Together, and Research Action Design found that in 63 percent of cases, family members on the outside were primarily responsible for court-related costs [...].
Rutgers sociology professor Brittany Friedman has written extensively on what is called “pay-to-stay” fees in American correctional institutions. In her 2020 article titled, “Unveiling the Necrocapitalist Dimensions of the Shadow Carceral State: On Pay-to-Stay to Recoup the Cost of Incarceration,” Friedman divides these fees into two categories: (1) room and board and (2) service-specific costs. Fees for room and board -- yes, literally for a thin mattress or even a plastic “boat” bed in a hallway, a toilet that may not flush, and scant, awful tasting food -- are typically charged at a “per diem rate for the length of incarceration.” It is not uncommon for these fees to reach $20 to $80 a day for the entire period of incarceration. The second category, what Friedman refers to as “service-specific costs,” includes fees for basic charges such as copays or other costs for seeing a doctor or nurse, programming fees, email and telephone calls, and commissary items.
In 2014, the Brennan Center for Justice documented that at least 43 states authorize charging incarcerated people for the cost of their own imprisonment, and at least 35 states authorize charging them for some medical expenses. More recent research from the Prison Policy Institute found that 40 states and the federal prison system charge incarcerated people medical copays.
It’s also critical to understand how little incarcerated people are paid for their labor in addition to the significant cut of their paltry hourly wages that corrections agencies take from their earnings. Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of incarcerated people work behind bars. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, those who work regular jobs in prisons such as maintaining the grounds, working in the kitchen, and painting the walls of the facilities earn on average between $0.14 and $0.63 an hour. [...] Arkansas and Texas don’t pay incarcerated workers at all, while Alabama only pays incarcerated workers employed by the state’s correctional industry. [...]
For example, if someone sends an incarcerated person in Florida $20 online, they will end up paying $24.95. [...]
Dallas County charges incarcerated people a $10 medical care fee for each medical request they submit. In Texas prisons, those behind bars pay $13.55 per medical visit, despite the fact that Texas doesn’t pay incarcerated workers anything. Texas is one of a handful of states that doesn’t pay incarcerated people for their labor.
In Kentucky’s McCracken County Jail in Paducah, it costs $0.40 a minute for a video call; this translates into $8.00 for each 20-minute video call. [...] For those who need to use email, JPay charges $2.35 for five emails for people in the Texas prison system ($0.47 an email). [...]
People in Florida prisons pay $1.70 for a packet of four extra-strength Tylenol and $4.02 for four tampons. And with inflation, commissary items are priced higher than ever. For example, according to the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, incarcerated people in Kentucky experienced a 7.2 percent rise in already-high commissary prices in July 2022. Researchers noted that a 4.6-ounce tube of Crest toothpaste, which costs $1.38 at the local Walmart, is $3.77 at the prison commissary. [...]
In Gaston County, North Carolina, incarcerated individuals who participate in state work release may make more than the state’s $0.38 an hour maximum pay, but they pay the jail a daily rate based on their yearly income of at least $18 per day and up to $36 per day. In fact, Brennan Center research indicates that almost every state takes a portion of the salary that incarcerated workers earn to compensate the corrections agency [...].
These room and board fees are found throughout the nation’s jails and prisons. Michigan laws allow any county to seek reimbursement for expenses incurred in relation to a charge for which a person was sentenced to county jail time -- up to $60 a day. Winnebago County, Wisconsin, charges $26 a day to those staying in its county jail.

This is from a list of 25 "low-stress" jobs that popped up on Forbes. The author only bothered to actually talk about 8, including Groundskeeper/Gardner, Message Therapist, Librarian, Photographer, fitness instructor, interior designer, and my personal fave:
Graphic Designer Graphic designers develop promotional material for their clients, in the form of photos, adverts, banners, flyers, and even business cards and website designs. Careers within the arts are usually quite relaxing and comforting for those who suffer anxiety, because you're able to express your emotions and find therapy through your creative work. Additionally, it does not require high levels of client-facing activity most of the time. Having prior experience in graphic design is helpful if you desire to strike out on your own as a freelancer, and holding a degree within marketing or design-related field is a bonus. Average salary range: $47,000 to $68,000 per annum
Because who has ever heard of a stressed graphic designer? (It's so relaxing it's on the list twice!
Also to make these things even more "relaxing" the author suggests going into business for yourself so you can make your own schedule!

Let's talk contract incentives
Or, how the Pittsburgh Pirates burned bridges over $200k
This is Ryan John "Rowdy" Tellez. Up until yesterday, he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball. Two days ago, the team designated him for assignment. When no other team wanted to pick him up, he was released from his contract.
The decision baffled fans, analysts, and other front office staff. Tellez was by no means a star -- his 91 OPS+ was slightly below average (OPS+ is normalized to 100), but his advanced analytics showed he was still playable. More importantly, there were only six games left in the regular season, and the Pirates had already been eliminated from playoff contention. They had nothing to play for, and Tellez would have been a free agent at the end of the year anyway.
Then Ethan Hullihen found something interesting.
Tellez, prior to his release, had 421 plate appearances on the season for the Pirates. At 425, he would receive a bonus -- if he came to the plate four more times in those remaining six games, he gets $200k. Rather than shell out for him, the Pirates simply said goodbye and good luck. Well...
So... what exactly are contract incentives?
For starters, they're about the one thing players and teams can agree on. Teams like them because, unlike your base salary, incentives don't count against the salary cap or luxury tax. It's a way of stashing money under the table -- sure, officially you might be making $3 million, and as far as the league is concerned, that's what you're making. But if you hit the marks we both expect you to, here's a little something on the top. Players like them because it's a way to bet on yourself. Extra money for being good at your job! Who doesn't want that!
Common incentives are:
Awards. Most Valuable Player. Cy Young Award. Defensive Player of the Year. Most Improved. Rookie of the Year. These awards don't come with any money of their own... not from the league. But if you win one, your team will give you a little walkin' around money for it. Some contracts also offer a smaller bonus if you finish in second or third place for these awards.
"Counting" stats. MLB has mostly phased these out, but other sports still have them. Unlike "rate" stats like points per game, these are exactly what they sound like. NFL players trigger incentives on numbers of touchdowns or receiving yards. An NHL player who hits a certain goal threshold will get a payout. Occasionally you see rate stats get incentives, but this requires more math and is less fun for the player involved.
Just showing up. Did you spend X number of minutes on the ice or on the court? Did you come up to the plate X number of times or pitch X number of innings? Hell yeah, brother. These incentives are often (but not always) reserved for bench players and players that are often injured. In the former case, hitting those appearance milestones means you played your way into regular time and are rewarded for that. In the latter, it's the team's way of saying, "Look. You're great when you're healthy. Prove you can be healthy."
This last point is important in Tellez's case, because he was signed as the Pirates' starting first baseman. If you play a 162-game season and receive a minimum of three plate appearances per game, that's 486 PAs right there. Now, that's an oversimplification of how many PAs Tellez could expect to have: he might miss games, he might come to the plate more than three times in a game. But a 425-PA incentive for a guy you expect to start? That's low. When the Phillies signed Aaron Nola to a seven-year extension last November, they explicitly did not include any incentives for innings pitched. Why? Because Nola is expected to pitch 200 innings a year. That's automatic money. All his bonuses are for awards.
Now, as I said earlier, Tellez isn't exactly a star. He probably won't make any of those awards. (Notably, "DS MVP" is an award that doesn't actually exist, but it's a standard player incentive in case MLB decides to start offering that as an award). But he probably expected to have 475 plate appearances. That's an extra $400k.
Instead, the Pirates decided to save themselves $200k. Which, in baseball terms? That's pocket change. Minimum salary is $700k a season. Bob Nutting, the owner of the Pirates and the guy who would be signing that bonus check, is worth $1.1 billion.
This is a different case than when the Chicago Cubs released Hector Neris earlier in the year, for a few reasons.
The Cubs released Neris on August 20, when they were still competing for a Wild Card spot... and with enough time for another team (in this case the Houston Astros) to sign him.
While Tellez was only a below-average player, Neris was effectively unplayable at the time of his release. For a reliever, you want a WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) below 1 -- in layman's terms, "less than one baserunner per outing." Neris was sitting at a 1.5 WHIP, and the eye test said that he was untrustworthy in high leverage situations.
Unlike Tellez, who would be a free agent anyway, once Neris reached his innings threshold, he got a vesting option: another year on his contract and another $9 million. That's significantly more money and a lost roster spot for a guy you can't trust in the clutch.
Now, I'm not blinded by loyalty to a team I like. How the Cubs went about the release was wrong. They did it quietly and appeared to blindside Neris with the decision. But from a business perspective, you have one team deciding to cut their losses on an employee they no longer trust. The other team is emptying out the tip jar just before closing.
So, why does this story matter? Because people are seeing it. Players are seeing it, and you bet their agents are. The Pirates need a new first baseman in 2025. Let's say, for the sake of it, Garrett Cooper is exploring his options and the Pirates come calling. Cooper's agent has a real incentive (see what I did there?) to say, "I can't be sure you won't be screwing my client out of $200k, so go ahead and add that to his base salary or we're taking our talents elsewhere." Players who have the decision between another team and the Pirates will take the team that doesn't have this newfound reputation for screwing over their role players.
Pittsburgh has not, in recent history, been an attractive free agency destination. They're a cheap team with no clear path to competing. They draft well, and then those players hit free agency and go to greener pastures. Now? Now they're screwed. All because Bob Nutting didn't want to cut off some scraps.

Wanna see the business side of story-based games?
Me! I want to! 👋 Hi, I'm Amaiguri. I'm a full time gamedev and I've released two games before and correctly predicted how much money I would make each time! Wow!
I've been considering converting the webfic I write into a story game of some kind -- a visual novel or a RPGmaker game or maybe even a walking sim? But I didn't know what I wanted to make!
This story has been THE STORY of my early adult life here -- it is SO important to me. So, while I'm a huge advocate of making whatever you want, I wanted to ensure whatever I put my effort into would be VAGUELY marketable. (Because, lemme tell you, webnovels are not marketable XD)
Before I dive in too deeply, **BIG DISCLAIMER**:
I am not a business person. I am using big, wide guestimates to make non-essential business decisions with myself. BUT I want to share my learnings with you. So, take everything I say with a grain of salt and JOIN ME on this journey:
Earlier this month, I made a post about wanting to make a visual novel. Specifically, a kinetic visual novel where you don't make choices and you just read basically. SO I've now done research into how well they sold. I used THIS website to determine how much money each of these games made (VERY loosely):
Juniper's Knot: ~$4k USD
Higurashi (The Whole Series): ~$300k USD (Averaging like 400 reviews per game and $50 for the whole bundle)
House in Fata Morgana: ~$1 million USD
I picked these out mostly because these are the small handful of kinetic novels I have actually heard about. I'm not saying there aren't other, more successful ones I haven't heard about but I figure, if I'm supposed to be representative of my target audience, I'm as good of a sample as any for this wild estimation.
Besides, Higurashi has a whole anime -- it is definitely fair to use that as an upper end -- and Juniper's Knot -- a tiny game no one has heard of -- as the lower end. (I mean, $0 is the lower end, but... you know...)
This paints a pretty stark picture, honestly. Like, this is looking at 6 to 8 years of work for... maybe a couple thousand for me? Realistically? Maybe up to $300k if I'm super lucky and go viral? And I'm not saying that isn't LIFE CHANGING money but like in the MOST MIRACULOUS scenario here, I am compensated less than my current salary for my current magnum opus. But realistically, I'm looking at maybe $1-4k if I get lucky. I'm not a horror-writer and I'm not a romance writer -- I will not have THAT feral of a fanbase XD And on top of all of that, I don't even play that many kinetic visual novels. I'm barely in my own target demo here!
Now, compare that to the numbers I ran on RPGmaker games where you just do narrative and there is very minimal gameplay:
Rakuen: 4000+ Reviews, over $100k in profits estimated
To the Moon: $8 Million in profit
A Bird Story: Definitely sold worse than To the Moon, was cheaper to make and cheaper to buy -- estimated at $397k
Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea: Dunno cuz it's free BUT its manga adaptation has 267 reviews on Amazon -- so the creator COULD have made bank on the actual game
See how much higher those are? Even when they're not as well known? And sure, the bottom is still $0 ultimately but the upper limit, with the most successful of these titles (and incidentally, the video game that convinced me to get into Game Design) is much much higher.
"BUT BELLE! Laura Shigihara did the music on a lot of those! You don't have Laura Shigihara!"
Ok BET! I'll hire her! The base industry rate for music per minute is $100/min. Let's suppose now she charge 10x that, cuz she's famous -- $1k/minute of music. I get her to compose a 3 minute song for $3k BUT she also brings over... say... 5% of her audience to check out my game.
That's admittedly, a high conversion rate so we'll just take 5% of Rakuen. Now, I'm imagining I'd charge like $25/copy of my game because it's gonna be like 300k words -- people pay $25 for a book of that length, so if I have art and programming also, I can do that. With just her 5% of Rakuen reviewers (21 reviewers of her 4.3k), that's like $7k USD. So, she'd probably just pay for herself and then some.
And to top all this off: I'm back in the target demo. I am ABSOLUTELY the kind of person who will play a solodev's RPGmaker game and forgive all jank and flaws and lack of gameplay if the story, art, and music are good.
That is, of course, making the assumption that I'll make good music and art 🥺🥺🥺
Now obviously, all this is WILD guestimates so like. You shouldn't make business decisions off this. I'm barely making "business" decisions -- I'm making hobby decisions. I have a full time job and I intend to keep it. BUT I think it's pretty clear where the potential money might be for me -- RPGmaker games.
Eris (Blinking): Thank you for reading!

The number of graduates in full-time paid employment has reached a new high but female salaries have fallen behind their male counterparts, a survey has found.
There were over 60 per cent of graduates in paid employment from the academic year of 2020-21, a four percentage point increase from last year and the most since 2017. However, despite achieving the same level of qualifications, first-class female graduates had a median salary of £25,000, £2,000 lower compared with men.
The figures came from the annual Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) survey where graduates are asked about their employment status roughly 15 months after they have finished their university course. More than 355,000 graduates responded, marking a response rate of 43 per cent.
Kate Nightingale, the director of communications, campaigns and research at Young Women’s Trust, an organisation campaigning for equal pay, said that women were unfairly paid as soon as they entered employment. She said: “Pay inequality is there right from the start of working life and only grows over time. Women are putting in the effort to study but not getting the payoff at the end.”
She added: “Young women earn significantly less than young men — on average, around a fifth less per year despite tending to be more highly educated. There are a whole range of reasons for this, including young women going into lower paid jobs and sectors and not progressing as quickly. Discriminatory attitudes are still alive and well.”
The results showed that there was a higher proportion of men earning the top graduate salaries. About 10 per cent of male graduates had a salary of £51,000 or above, double compared with female graduates in full-time paid employment.
Alesha De-Freitas, the head of policy at the Fawcett Society, which pushes for women’s rights, says that employers must do a better job attracting female staff and warned of the economical impact of having a gender pay gap.
She said: “Employers must do more to ensure their hiring and pay policies do not disadvantage women and we urgently need to see more employers publishing action plans. We have a stubborn gender pay gap in the UK, which harms women and harms our economy.”
“It is particularly concerning that this data reveals men begin their careers earning more than women, even when having the same level of qualification.”
The HESA data also revealed that 10 per cent of graduates were either in further study or part-time employment, matching the figure in the previous survey.
Graduates who studied medicine and dentistry had the highest salary when they started full-time work. Of those who achieved a first, their median salary was £35,000, closely followed by veterinary science students at £32,000.
Former design, and creative and performing arts students entering full-time employment had a median salary of £22,500, the lowest among all subjects in the survey. Media, journalism and communications graduates earn just £500 more annually which was the second-lowest.
The Department for Education did not comment on the graduate pay gap but said that opportunities for women in the workplace have increased. A spokesman said: “Over the last decade the gender pay gap has fallen from 20 per cent to 15 per cent, with the percentage of women in employment rising from 67 per cent to 72 per cent. We strongly urge all organisations to take steps to address the gender imbalance in pay.
“To help close the gap even further, we have announced a childcare revolution with 30 hours free childcare for children over the age of nine months, and earlier this year we launched recruitment for our programme to get STEM returners back into the workplace.”

tl;dr life updates cause most of my irl yelling has been confined to twitter or DMs
as per my pinned, i've been in a bad burnout mostly creatively, so drawing and writing for myself has been kinda null for a few months-ish now outside some small outlets here and there (carrds, trying to pick up doing a twine project). socially i've been kinda floating around too, so if i've been sparse, im sorry ;;
a lot of my brain muncher has been work cause a bunch of things have come up ... namely finding out im paid 33% (not correct ik i just dont wanna do the exact math rn) less than most of the other designers lmao (which shocked even them and our design lead). i make ~$41k yearly, others are at ~$56k and average for designers is around ~$60k ... and my yearly performance is 8 months overdue where i'm probably not even gonna be able to argue my salary up to the average
obvs as a first job in the industry and mostly remote work (so no rent to pay) i took what i took, but it was kind of a slap to find that out
this is on top of our ceo deciding the resolution for our issues (which were brought up in a survey that was before we started fixing some of those issues already) is mandatory return to office 4 days a week from almost completely remote work (and the almost was voluntary to come into office). ill tell you right now, it's a shitty solution to our issues, and they're not compensating us for shit for travel time (aka 2 hours of my day will just be beating the train back and forth, and monthly payment of $200 for a pass where i live)
other game companies can do full remote or a choice of hybrid in how you want it :|
so, i've mostly been on low energy and just picking where my energy is going which is in games primarily to just not think abt stuff too much (yes yes star rail too), so my presence here and around ppl has been flimsy
im not lying down and taking it lmao dont worry abt that, i genuinely hope 30%+ of ppl leave or start leaving. old codger with his head up his arse and not listening to the ppl being like 'hey, this is not going to resolve our problems and will only cause more issues down the line'
so yeah!!!! my fists are up!!!! and i will support my coworkers too, cause we all genuinely like working with each other but sir dust-in-the-ears doesn't give a shit so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sucks cause we were finally nudging towards some rlly exciting things
#[ idk if i'd call it negative persay but it is just irl struggle buggles ]#[ im not down im just ready to throw hands for my own future LMAO ]#OOC // AID TALKS.

Hey there!
You are an artist I really admire. I am thinking of becoming an artist, specifically working digital.
Let's say I'm good for my age, and I have time to improve. Are you an artist full time and does it pay well? Do you afford necessary payments..?
If this is too personal PLEASE you don't have to answer! I understand!
Hello! I count myself as a freelance illustrator, currently also a student who major in illustration. I'd say the salary is quite variable, depends on the work load or client's budget. The big projects and jobs I have worked on are designing mascot for anime convention and their promotional merchandise.
Though my place here, the average salary per month for freelance artist/illustrator is only sufficient for their cost of living (1 month), part-time jobs are necessary for gaining extra wages to pay bills, otherwise you have to keep looking for freelance jobs. Full time job like art director and art lecturer have more stable income and their salary is enough for paying both living cost and bills.
For me I have my parents' financial supports while I'm studying in art college with the help of scholarship, which are things I'm very grateful of.
Extra tip(?) If you ready looking for art jobs, I think it's important to have your portfolios prepared, so they can easily refer your work and it shows professionalism, also your own artist websites that features your general information, art related achievements and your artworks.
