This is a pretty big leap for me in creating a comic (also being my second comic). So understand that there might be a few mistakes and hiccups as I learn through CSP on creating.

First off: I am in hysterics that I somehow managed to snag this user. I was almost certain greenzilla4 would be taken.

Doylist perspective is my last resort to cope with immersion collapse, when character/plot moves in exasperatedly unreasonable direction, and for the love of my mental stability there's no explanation for that aside from "the author wills it"

Did you experience immersion collapse while watching this episode? Or I guess to be more specific, did Chosen collapse your immersion in this episode somehow? I'll admit, some of his actions surprised me (can't get into how/why yet), but I don't think I was ever thrown for enough of a loop that I was going #notmyChosen or anything like that XD

(We discussed this briefly in our server; I think the biggest immersion break we collectively agreed on was that the pause button seemed "too easy." There's also things like neither Chosen nor Orange thinking to pull the taser dart out of Chosen's arm; it stays in his arm up until he throws off the other three mercs dogpiling him, and we don't even see him pull it out, it's just suddenly not there anymore. Or the inconsistent strength of Chosen's lasers. Though "Chosen's aim has been observed to be abysmal" as my friend K1tty put it so maybe that's it XD None of this is related to character-writing, though. But I will grant that things like this can cause problems for character writing, since plot and worldbuilding and characters are all interlinked.)

There is also something to be said for the idea that characters which receive more focus from a narrative will usually have more consistent portrayal. At this point in the series, Chosen hasn't gotten nearly as much focus as Orange and the color quartet. Those early AvM seasons may have been sparse in terms of plot, but they were brilliant at fleshing out the personalities and idiosyncrasies of the color gang. Compare them to Chosen, or Dark, Or King, or even Purple, not to mention Victim; barring that one ice-skating short, we've only really seen them in plot-heavy scenarios. This is enough to form ideas about them, but not enough to get a full measure of them as characters. And I mean that from both a writer's and an audience's perspective; stories need conflict, but if we don't know what characters are like when there isn't conflict then what difference does it make?

Side-note but I wonder if this might be why some fans seem to have an easier time characterizing Dark than Chosen: because we actually see him in a moment that is, at least from his perspective, free of conflict.

As of now, I'd almost say that Chosen himself is more of a plot device than a character. "Almost" being the key word, there; because he has done enough for people to assume motives behind his choices, which, intended by the writers or not, inevitably characterizes him in the eyes of the audience.

(This is what I did with King, and I think many others did as well, and I think it's why many of us were so thrown off by his characterization in AvM30 compared to the rest of the arc up until that point.)

(On the subject of writers not realizing how actions taken by characters to move the plot along might reflect on the characters themselves...do you think Alan and his team know that they implied King would let himself die along with Minecraft? But that's just another example of the audience filling in gaps, like you said.)

This has been a winding ramble and I don't know if it actually addresses all of your concerns, but I wanted to get back to you without making you wait another few months XD

Incidentally, on the topic of Chosen's characterization, I wrote an essay shortly before the release of this episode, if you're interested. A lot of it is outdated now that the episode is out but I think some of the questions I had in it still have pertinence.

Sorry but I'm still thinking about this: if Chosen really "wasn’t holding back" then Glasses would be dead. He’d either die from the cold or from lack of air or from electrocution.

By the time this moment happens, Chosen's lightning has already shorted out the other three jetskis (and I reiterate, his lightning seems to have only struck the jetskis, not their riders), leaving the other three mercs incapable of reaching him. With that one strike, he turned this encounter from a 4v1 into a 1v1.

Glasses has no backup, here. He's lost the advantage of numbers, the biggest advantage his team had, and he's taking on Chosen alone.

Why do I say that numbers were the team's biggest advantage, when Glasses still has his jetski with its glitch-shots?

Because those aren't much of an advantage if Chosen decides to just tank every single shot and power through the aftereffects regardless.

Whether this was a...smart decision on Chosen's part is up for debate, but the end result is that Chosen has nullified both of Glasses' advantages against him. Glasses never pulls out his toolbar until after he's landed on the ground and disembarked from his ride, most likely because he can't wield it effectively up in midair.

The only reason I can think of for Chosen to do something as foolhardy as not dodging the glitch-shots is because he wanted his landing to be as accurate as possible, so he didn't do anything that would alter his fall-path.

With how big his glacier ends up, he could've aimed in Glasses' general direction and it still would've worked. He didn't have to be accurate.

But no, Chosen gets close enough for a point-blank attack.

So again, if he wasn’t holding back, tell me how Glasses is still alive right now??

He and Glasses are practically nose-to-nose, when Chosen strikes.

He didn't have to miss.

I still have to analyze Chosen's behavior in this episode as a whole, and I still have to compare it with his behavior in past episodes; but in this opening scene I am absolutely certain that he was going out of his way to avoid hurting his pursuers. To his own detriment, even.

Just because he “went all-out with his powers” doesn’t mean he wasn’t holding back. I’d even argue that he wouldn’t have had to go all-out with his powers if he’d decided that killing or crippling the mercs was okay.

Because, like I said, he could've ended Glasses right there.
