Vamos a definição de um livro:
Os hormônios são compostos químicos, produzidos em uma CÉLULA, que modulam os processos celulares em outra célula. interagindo com proteínas específicas que funcionam como receptores ligados a vias de transdução. (TAIZ et al., 2017).

Segundo a Professora M.Sc. Henriqueta Nunes (2023), professora de fisiologia vegetal da UEPA, os hormônios:
"são substâncias orgânicas naturais, que em baixas concentrações promovem, inibem ou modificam processos morfológicos e fisiológicos influenciando o crescimento e desenvolvimento dos vegetais."

A auxina é um hormônio vegetal, ou fitormônio, que ajuda a planta a crescer e alcançar altura durante o seu desenvolvimento. Esse hormônio permite que a planta se oriente em busca da luz do sol. Esse composto químico que regula o desenvolvimento vegetal recebe o nome de auxicina, que vem do grego auxein e significa “crescer” ou “aumentar”.
Giberilina
O livro Fisiologia e Desenvolvimento Vegetal, de Taiz (2017), esclarece que a giberilina é um grupo de hormônio vegetal que participa de várias etapas do desenvolvimento da planta. Desde a formação do fruto até a germinação, passando pelo aumento dos entrenós de plantas baixas, floração, entre outros. O autor também relata que a sua descoberta41 ocorreu entre as décadas de 20 e 30 do século passado, em lavouras de arroz contaminadas com uma doença provocada pelo fungo Gibberella fujikuroi (atualmente chamado de Fusarium fujikuroi) e que fez as plantas crescerem de forma anormal; embora a giberilina tenha sido encontrada primeiro em fungos, depois se descobriu que ela também atua em plantas.
Citocina
A citocinina é um fitormônio que age diretamente na divisão celular do vegetal. Afirma ainda que esse hormônio vegetal contribui para o desenvolvimento da planta de forma bastante ampla, por exemplo, é a responsável pela queda das folhas de algumas espécies de árvores, fenômeno conhecido como senescência, além de interagir com as redes fúngicas (o que beneficia a planta).
