Anyone in tech will tell you it’s only a matter of time until truck drivers will be replaced by autonomous trucks.  According to Mike Reid, the Chief Operating Officer at Embark Trucks, “Anyone employed as a driver today will be able to retire as a driver." In other words, Reid strongly feels the need for truck drivers will continue for many years to come. Interestingly enough, Mr. Reid heads up one of the country’s top developers of software for self-driving trucks – Embark.1
Mr. Reid foresees autonomous trucking as a gradual rollout over the next 30 years. New semis will need to be built and existing trucks will need to be retrofitted to drive independently. While “Autopilot” driving will be used on highways, most players in the self-driving market consistently state that there will still continue to be a need for lead drivers on highways, training drivers, and drivers to take over in congested situations such as cities, construction zones and exits. Ultimately, the federal government via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will need to establish rules to safely accommodate 80,000-pound autonomous trucks on U.S. highways.2
Most recently, active test situations have been conducted under favorable conditions on mostly flat highways during temperate seasons. Once harsh weather elements such as snow and ice and difficult terrain are introduced, Reid feels there will be an even greater need for training drivers to “teach” the AI software how to react appropriately. Embark has professional drivers sitting at the wheel of each of their trucks actively monitoring the road, supervising the system, and preparing to take control whenever they think the truck is responding too slowly to an impending situation. Embark has run millions of miles "training" in this manner.
In a win-win scenario, Reid feels that autonomous driving and AI driver training might mesh well with current demographics. Older drivers are retiring or are being threatened by mandated retirement. The shorter runs and training positions offered by autonomous trucking might be just what young drivers would prefer instead of the long-haul, sedentary lifestyle of traditional trucking.
As of now, there are roughly 3.5 million professional trucks drivers on the road in the US. At the current rate, employment of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is projected to grow another 6 percent in the coming years resulting in a projected shortage of more than 174,000 drivers by 2026.3

Tesla’s Autopilot Technology Faces Fresh Scrutiny Tesla faced numerous questions about its Autopilot technology after a Florida driver was killed in 2016 when the system of sensors and cameras failed to see and brake for a tractor-trailer crossing a road. Now the company is facing more scrutiny than it has in the last five years for Autopilot, which Tesla and its chief executive, Elon Musk, have long maintained makes its cars safer than other vehicles. Federal officials are looking into a series of recent accidents involving Teslas that either were using Autopilot or might have been using it. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed last week that it was investigating 23 such crashes. In one accident this month, a Tesla Model Y rear-ended a police car that had stopped on a highway near Lansing, Mich. The driver, who was not seriously injured, had been using Autopilot, the police said. In February in Detroit, under circumstances similar to the 2016 Florida accident, a Tesla drove beneath a tractor-trailer that was crossing the road, tearing the roof off the car. The driver and a passenger were seriously injured. Officials have not said whether the driver had turned on Autopilot. NHTSA is also looking into a Feb. 27 crash near Houston in which a Tesla ran into a stopped police vehicle on a highway. It is not clear if the driver was using Autopilot. The car did not appear to slow before the impact, the police said. Autopilot is a computerized system that uses radar and cameras to detect lane markings, other vehicles and objects in the road. It can steer, brake and accelerate automatically with little input from the driver. Tesla has said it should be used only on divided highways, but videos on social media show drivers using Autopilot on various kinds of roads. “We need to see the results of the investigations first, but these incidents are the latest examples that show these advanced cruise-control features Tesla has are not very good at detecting and then stopping for a vehicle that is stopped in a highway circumstance,” said Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, a group created in the 1970s by Consumers Union and Ralph Nader. This renewed scrutiny arrives at a critical time for Tesla. After reaching a record high this year, its share price has fallen about 20 percent amid signs that the company’s electric cars are losing market share to traditional automakers. Ford Motor’s Mustang Mach E and the Volkswagen ID.4 recently arrived in showrooms and are considered serious challengers to the Model Y. The outcome of the current investigations is important not only for Tesla but for other technology and auto companies that are working on autonomous cars. While Mr. Musk has frequently suggested the widespread use of these vehicles is near, Ford, General Motors and Waymo, a division of Google’s parent, Alphabet, have said that moment could be years or even decades away. Bryant Walker Smith, a professor at the University of South Carolina who has advised the federal government on automated driving, said it was important to develop advanced technologies to reduce traffic fatalities, which now number about 40,000 a year. But he said he had concerns about Autopilot, and how the name and Tesla’s marketing imply drivers can safely turn their attention away from the road. “There is an incredible disconnect between what the company and its founder are saying and letting people believe, and what their system is actually capable of,” he said. Tesla, which disbanded its public relations department and generally does not respond to inquiries from reporters, did not return phone calls or emails seeking comment. And Mr. Musk did not respond to questions sent to him on Twitter. The company has not publicly addressed the recent crashes. While it can determine if Autopilot was on at the time of accidents because its cars constantly send data to the company, it has not said if the system was in use. The company has argued that its cars are very safe, claiming that its own data shows that Teslas are in fewer accidents per mile driven and even fewer when Autopilot is in use. It has also said it tells drivers that they must pay close attention to the road when using Autopilot and should always be ready to retake control of their cars. A federal investigation of the 2016 fatal crash in Florida found that Autopilot had failed to recognize a white semi trailer against a bright sky, and that the driver was able to use it when he wasn’t on a highway. Autopilot continued operating the car at 74 miles per hour even as the driver, Joshua Brown, ignored several warnings to keep his hands on the steering wheel. A second fatal incident took place in Florida in 2019 under similar circumstances — a Tesla crashed into a tractor-trailer when Autopilot was engaged. Investigators determined that the driver had not had his hands on the steering wheel before impact. While NHTSA has not forced Tesla to recall Autopilot, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the system “played a major role” in the 2016 Florida accident. It also said the technology lacked safeguards to prevent drivers from taking their hands off the steering wheel or looking away from the road. The safety board reached similar conclusions when it investigated a 2018 accident in California. By comparison, a similar G.M. system, Super Cruise, monitors a driver’s eyes and switches off if the person looks away from the road for more than a few seconds. That system can be used only on major highways. In a Feb. 1 letter, the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, Robert Sumwalt, criticized NHTSA for not doing more to evaluate Autopilot and require Tesla to add safeguards that prevent drivers from misusing the system. The new administration in Washington could take a firmer line on safety. The Trump administration did not seek to impose many regulations on autonomous vehicles and sought to ease other rules the auto industry did not like, including fuel-economy standards. By contrast, President Biden has appointed an acting NHTSA administrator, Steven Cliff, who worked at the California Air Resources Board, which frequently clashed with the Trump administration on regulations. Concerns about Autopilot could dissuade some car buyers from paying Tesla for a more advanced version, Full Self-Driving, which the company sells for $10,000. Many customers have paid for it in the expectation of being able to use it in the future; Tesla made the option operational on about 2,000 cars in a “beta” or test version starting late last year, and Mr. Musk recently said the company would soon make it available to more cars. Full Self Driving is supposed to be able to operate Tesla cars in cities and on local roads where driving conditions are made more complex by oncoming traffic, intersections, traffic lights, pedestrians and cyclists. Despite their names, Autopilot and Full Self-Driving have big limitations. Their software and sensors cannot control cars in many situations, which is why drivers have to keep their eyes on the road and hands on or close to the wheel. In a November letter to California’s Department of Motor Vehicles that recently became public, a Tesla lawyer acknowledged that Full Self-Driving struggled to react to a wide range of driving situations and should not be considered a fully autonomous driving system. The system is not “not capable of recognizing or responding” to certain “circumstances and events,” Eric C. Williams, Tesla’s associate general counsel, wrote. “These include static objects and road debris, emergency vehicles, construction zones, large uncontrolled intersections with multiple incoming ways, occlusions, adverse weather, complicated or adversarial vehicles in the driving paths, unmapped roads.” Mr. Levine of the Center for Auto Safety has complained to federal regulators that the names Autopilot and Full Self-Driving are misleading at best and could be encouraging some drivers to be reckless. “Autopilot suggests the car can drive itself and, more importantly, stop itself,” he said. “And they doubled down with Full Self-Driving, and again that leads consumers to believe the vehicle is capable of doing things it is not capable of doing.” Source link Orbem News #Autopilot #Faces #fresh #Scrutiny #Technology #Teslas

Autonomous and Semi-autonomous Tractors Market 2021 by Global Industry Trends, Industry Growth, Development Status, Top Leaders, Future Plans and Opportunity Assessment 2025
Autonomous and Semi-autonomous Tractors Market - Snapshot
Autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors are a ground-breaking innovation for the agricultural sector. This innovation is anticipated to boost agricultural produce with minimal labor cost engagement. Autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors minimizes the human effort required in farm processes such as harvesting, seed sowing, fertilization, and scarifying. Semi-autonomous tractors reduce human effort by assisting the driver in certain actions, while autonomous tractors are fully, driverless tractors, which completely replace the driver with several software and hardware components. Moreover, fully driverless tractors are controlled by handheld devices (remote control systems). The market for autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors is anticipated to expand significantly and surpass US$ 9 Bn by 2026.
Planning to lay down future strategy? Perfect your plan with our report sample here https://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/sample/sample.php?flag=S&rep_id=50610
High labor cost and limited availability of labor for farming are likely to propel the market for autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors, as it is expected to reduce the requirement of labor and would increase output for farmers. Autonomous tractors are more precise and help in planting, sowing, harvesting, and performing other functions more precisely, which helps enhance yield with minimum loss. In most countries, working hours are governed by laws; however autonomous tractors can be operated continuously without any time restriction, which can be a significant factor in enhancing yield of crops. Autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors comprise crop yield monitoring systems that track the crop and field and assist the owner in managing the field according to the property of the soil. Autonomous tractors are more precise and accurate, thus reduce the chances of collision with obstructions arriving in the path of tractors, which results in reduction of maintenance cost of tractors, except the regular maintenance cost. Functioning of autonomous tractors is independent of external factors such as weather and light conditions. High cost of autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors is anticipated to be a key factor that is likely to hamper the market; however, they are expected to be profitable in the long-term, as they are expected to repay their cost by saving on labor charges.
North America and Europe have witnessed a rise in adoption of precision agriculture in the last few years. Availability of large fields, limited labor availability, and massive grasslands in these regions and high per capita income are major factors driving the autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors market in these regions. Increase in geriatric population in Japan, who lack the power to handle conventional mechanical tractors with consistency, is likely to boost the autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors market in the country during the forecast period. According to the United Nations, the birth rate in Japan has plummeted since 2015, and the death rate has simultaneously deteriorated, which has led to an imbalance in the working population. Japan is at the forefront in the development of autonomous tractors due to the presence of large number of manufacturers in the region. Furthermore, China is major producer and exporter of farm products, thus it is likely to adopt autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors during the forecast period in order to enhance their production. Some leading wineries, such as E. & J. Gallo Winery, a prominent family-owned winery in the world, collaborated with New Holland and Autonomous Solutions Inc. to manufacture fully autonomous tractors for their vineyards. Likewise, Campbell Soup Company partnered with Case IH and Autonomous Solutions Inc. for development of fully autonomous tractors. Thus, the presence of large number of wineries in some countries, such as France, Italy, and Spain, is likely to boost the demand for autonomous tractors for wine yards in these countries.

The global autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors market in developing regions, such as Asia Pacific, is expected to expand at a significant growth rate during the forecast period, as the market for semi-autonomous tractors is expected to expand at a rapid pace in countries such as China and India, owing to their lower cost as compared to the fully driverless tractors. Furthermore, the penetration of fully driverless tractors is expected to remain low during the forecast period due to the availability of adequate labor in China and India; however, the penetration is expected to increase after the forecast period due to reduction in cost of driverless tractors owing to development of full-fledged production line of tractors and declining number of labor in sub-regions of Asia Pacific. Moreover, most of the population in the region prefers desk jobs over field work.
Major players who are continuously involved into the development of autonomous and semi-autonomous tractors include AGCO Corporation, CNH Industrial N.V., Deere & Company, Escorts Limited, Komatsu America Corp., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., SAME DEUTZ-FAHR Italia S.p.A., Ag Leader Technology, Agjunction, Inc., Autonomous Solutions Inc., Raven Industries, Inc., Trimble, Inc., and YANMAR CO., LTD. Among all the manufacturers, CNH Industrial N.V. and YANMAR CO., LTD are at the forefront in the development of the autonomous tractors. In 2016, CNH industrial N.V. revealed its concept for fully autonomous tractor and is planning to launch its fully driverless tractor under CASE IH brand in the market in the near future. The company is planning to launch its product into five categories based on the level of automation of the tractor, while YANMAR CO., LTD announced the expected launch its fully driverless tractor by the end of October 2018.
