Electric Power Steering Market: Taking a Smooth Turn
With a shift in the automotive industry toward more fuel-efficient and smarter vehicles, the electric power steering market has a huge potential to grow in the upcoming years. Consumers have started preferring the electric power steering (EPS) system over the traditional Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS) system when they decide to buy a new vehicle, as EPS provides an enhanced and smooth driving experience.
Tumblr media
The EPS system does not require a mechanical connection between the steering and the wheels. In the electric power steering system, when the steering is turned, a torque sensor on the steering column detects this movement and sends information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which is the control unit of the car. This control unit then sends electricity to the motor placed at the end of the steering column. Once the motor receives the correct voltage signal, its gears start rotating, which controls the movement of the car's rack and ensures that the front wheels move in the desired direction!
Integration with other Automotive Systems: One of the biggest benefits of adopting the EPS system is that it can be integrated with other automotive systems, which is the need of the hour. Lane departure warning (LDW), automated parking and electronic stability control (ESC) are recent trends of the automotive industry that are compatible with the EPS system. The diverse applications of EPS in other automotive systems increase vehicles’ overall safety and enable more sophisticated steering assistance.
Integration with Autonomous Driving System: Another major industry trend is autonomous driving systems, and the EPS is crucial here, too! An Autonomous Driving System (ADS) requires electric power steering, as it allows the car to steer itself without the driver's assistance.
Why the Electric Power Steering Market is Growing: Advantages Offered by Electric Power Steering System
The EPS system is becoming popular as it offers many advantages when compared to the traditional hydraulic power steering system. HPS has a complicated design and consumes more power than electric power steering. Growing environmental concerns have given rise to the adoption of EPS as they consume less fuel than their traditional counterpart. According to some estimates, EPS can save up to 90% of the energy used by the HPS system. Moreover, the EPS system does not require hydraulic fluids, which results in reduced maintenance costs. Electric power steering also helps in reducing the weight of the vehicle as it uses electric motors instead of hydraulic pumps.
Governments and regulatory organizations in many countries have enforced strict guidelines related to CO2/CO emissions, fuel efficiency and vehicle safety, that mandate manufacturers to integrate cutting-edge technologies in steering mechanisms. For example, in case of frontal impact, collapsible electric power steering (CEPS) collapses the steering column and provides additional safety to the driver by reducing the risk of chest and head injuries.

Challenges
The EPS industry has its challenges too—limited aftermarket presence being the first. The EPS components have a relatively small aftermarket, which poses a challenge to vehicle owners looking for repairs or improvements. Secondly, despite being simple in design, the repair and maintenance of electric power steering is little complex. Since the market is evolving fast, specialized skills and equipment are required for proper servicing. This can lead to higher maintenance costs for the owner. EPS’s dependency on electrical systems is another major threat to the market growth, as electrical failures can affect steering performance, raising concerns regarding safety.
Global Overview
The global electric power steering market had a size value of more than USD 25.32 billion in 2023. This is anticipated to reach around USD 40 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6.6% from 2024 to 2030. The market has witnessed tremendous transformation in the recent few years. With the growing popularity of hybrid and electric vehicles, EPS system is delivering lightweight and energy-efficient solutions. Due to the emerging economies of the Asia Pacific, the EPS industry accounted for the largest revenue generation in this region in 2023. The rapidly growing demand for the solution from countries such as India and China, where the rising population provides a large customer base, has given a boost to the electric power steering market.
Europe is another key market for EPS due to the presence of significant manufacturers in the region. For example, the rising demand for ADAS and the push toward autonomous vehicles in Germany have given a push to the adoption of EPS by the major automakers operating in the country, such as Volkswagen Group, BMW AG, and Mercedes-Benz. Moreover, organizations such as the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and the European Union (EU) have implemented stringent emission and fuel efficiency standards that encourage the adoption of EPS technology. North America has a significant presence of larger vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. These heavy vehicles require better safety features, such as precise and responsive steering systems. EPS technology plays a crucial role here.
Innovations in the industry
The EPS industry is evolving rapidly. Key players are coming up with innovative and latest technologies to stay ahead of their competitors. In April 2023, Nexteer Automotive launched the Modular Rack-Assist Electric Power Steering system (mREPS) to provide cost-effective, modular EPS solutions. The mREPS system offers advanced steering systems in heavier vehicles, including EVs. Similarly, in September 2022, Hitachi Astemo introduced a Steer-by-Wire prototype, which actuates the tires through the electric control of steering wheel inputs.
JTEKT Corporation, GKN Automotive Limited, Hitachi Astemo, Ltd., Denso Corporation, Nexteer Automotive, NSK Ltd., Robert Bosch GmbH, Hyundai Mobis, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and ZF Friedrichshafen AG, are some of the leading companies in the electric power steering market.

Verdict
We tested the BAIC B40 PLUS Champion Petrol in a short review (1 day) and we were quite impressed with what it was capable of.
The 2.0L petrol engine had an automatic transmission, making it easy to navigate through traffic, on the highway, and over the rocky off-road terrains on which we tested it.
Manual transmission is only available in the diesel models.
The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) LED fog lights are so bright that you probably forget that you need to turn the headlights on, which you do manually.
There is a start-stop ignition button but no keyless entry, you still need to use the remote for the central locking.
The features in the BAIC B40 PLUS are basic, but it covers all the standard features you need in any vehicle in terms of comfort, safety, and connectivity. I liked the BAIC logo look air conditioner vents, and the leather padded doors gave a nice finish. Something to get used to is the door hinges which are very loose, so just be careful when opening the door if you are too close to a wall or another vehicle in a parking.
You can switch from standard drive mode to sport mode, snow mode, or from 2H, 4H or 4L with the touch of a button or the turn of a knob for the latter options.
In sport mode, the SUV builds up speed quite quickly but beware of the high fuel consumption that follows it. Generally, the fuel consumption is relatively high as we averaged 14.0L/100km which could be more fuel efficient, especially considering the current petrol price and the claims of 10.6L/100km.
But if you want to take a slow cruise and enjoy the scenery you can remove the hardtop roof - which you will need to do manually and leave it at home if you are planning to do this. There are anti-roll bars fitted in the BAIC B40 PLUS should you wish to drive roofless.
The tailgate has separate hinges from the rear window to make it easier to switch when switching from hard-top to topless.
What was quite impressive is the ground clearance of 210mm which results in a generous approach angle of 37 degrees, departure angle of 31 degrees and ramp-over angle of 23 degrees. This aids in the ease of moving from on-road to off-road, which the BAIC B40 PLUS handles very well.
The BAIC B40 PLUS starts from R 574,500 which if you are comparing it to mid-sized SUVs might seem reasonable, but if you add the fact that it is a fully capable Off-Road 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicle then it is very competitive.

Automotive Electric Power Steering Market: Futuristic Technologies Overview
Tumblr media
Power steering is especially important for cars with engines in the front and a lot of weight on the front wheels. Sensors detect torque in the steering column while the computer module controls the electric motor, making EPS systems significantly reliable and convenient. Hence, they make an attractive proposition for the automotive industry, enabling growth for the EPS market. As per Inkwood Research, the global automotive electric power steering market is set to propel with a 4.26% CAGR by 2030 and is expected to generate a revenue of $57.18 billion during the forecast period, 2022-2030.
Electric power steering (EPS) is a system that helps steer the wheels with an additional power source other than the driver’s manual force with which he turns the steering. This feature adds to the driving comfort as less effort is needed to turn the steering. Additionally, EPS systems eliminate drive belts, pumps, and hoses connected to the engine with variable power intensity. The configuration of EPS systems allows power assist systems to be incorporated into the steering column or the rack and pinion steering gear.
Further, conventional hydraulic steering systems require frequent changing of hydraulic fuel. Other components such as the steering pump, hydraulic fluid, rotary valve, steering fluid reservoir, and hydraulic chamber must be monitored. Therefore, problems may arise in a hydraulic system because of multiple components and the complexity of the design.
Hydraulic v/s Electric: The New-Age Power Steering Solution
Electric power steering (EPS) provides an extra steering force to the passenger as well as commercial cars with an electrical motor. It is the latest steering system without conventional hydraulic power-assisted parts. Moreover, EPS systems offer more assistance compared to traditional electric motor hydraulic power steering coupled to the steering gear or column. Hydraulic power steering is a primitive technology used for decades and has improved significantly with time. Earlier, it did not have any difference in steering response with the car’s speed, but the new age of hydraulic power steering is speed-sensitive and works better than the older hydraulic power steering.
However, electric power steering is a comparatively new technology and comes under the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with a less complicated build & mechanism, space-saving, and durability. Electric power steering use sensors to sense the car speed and will take care of the different steering response required for different speeds. Electric power steering consumes power from a battery that is also charged by the engine, but it consumes less power than hydraulic power steering. Therefore, a car with an EPS system provides more mileage than one with hydraulic power steering.
Sensors detect steering column movements consecutively with a processor module that applies assistive power with an electric motor. This mechanism allows various assistance depending on driving conditions and requirements. With electronic systems becoming increasingly common in cars, they will use EPS as the future power steering system. Unlike its counterpart, EPS is consistently active during the steering process. It also eliminates maintenance on steering hydraulics and cuts fuel consumption by approximately 0.4 liters every 100 km.
How do EPS systems and sensors work in different vehicle types?
An electric power steering (EPS) sensor is a futuristic technology for highly automated driving. These sensors are primarily used in EPS systems to measure the torque on the steering wheels. The electronic control unit calculates the amount of steering assistance required by the electric motor based on the data collected by these sensors. The steering wheel angle and the amount of effort applied to the turn are the two key driver inputs that these steering sensors monitor.
After analyzing these input signals, motor electronics generate a responsive output algorithmically, resulting in intuitively responsive assisted steering. The assistance provided by the sensors to the vehicle enables the driver to have a better judgment of constraints and directions, thereby reducing accidents and collisions.
Passenger Cars
The application of electric power steering in passenger cars is surging, owing to its numerous advantages. Along with reducing the vehicle weight and rising production and sales of passenger cars, automobile manufacturers are proactively equipping their vehicles with EPS. This step aids in increasing fuel efficiency while further increasing a focus on safety and comfort. Thereby, the automobile manufacturers are now focusing on incorporating electric power steering technology in the entry-level segment cars, also, in turn, propelling the demand for electric power steering in passenger cars.
Commercial Vehicles
The adoption of electric power steering in commercial vehicles is still nascent as they majorly use hydraulic steering systems. However, with the increased restrictions from environmental regulations, the scope for electrically power steering is expected to become a standard feature in commercial vehicles. With the growing logistics sector and construction, vehicles’ demand for electric power steering has increased. Moreover, with the continually increasing restrictions and regulations on diesel-powered commercial trucks, truck manufacturers, such as Volvo, Mercedes, and Daimler, have started manufacturing and testing electric trucks, which is expected to drive the demand for electric power steering systems in commercial vehicles.
EPS Systems: Future Outlook
An industry study estimated that electric power steering (EPS) saves 4% more fuel than hydraulic steering. Also, it uses 1/10th power as that of hydraulic steering. This number is huge when emissions from millions of vehicles are calculated. In addition, with the advent of government regulations, global automakers have been forced to comply with the new environmental norms to develop cleaner and fuel-efficient vehicles, driving the global automotive electric power steering market.

A Complete Automotive Differentials Review for 2023
A gear system called an automobile differential allows the wheels to spin at various speeds while turning. Because it divides the engine torque into two distinct units, the engine power may be multiplied and the wheels can spin at various rates.
To prevent losing traction when turning, the automotive differential is made to let the wheels rotate at separate rates. Without a differential, wheels are compelled to travel at the same speed, which can result in traction loss. When all four wheels are turned at the same pace, the drivetrain is put under pressure and the tires and roadways may be damaged.
Tumblr media
Torque-Vectoring Differential
The most cutting-edge differential technology is a torque-vectoring differential. A sophisticated network of sensors and other electronics that draw information from the steering mechanism and other sources are used to control it.
This makes the differential system—which is fantastic at boosting performance—able to transfer power to every wheel as necessary and helps give optimal traction.

Functions of Automotive Differential
Numerous components make up the differential. The pinion and ring gears are the major parts. A series of smaller gears are housed inside the carrier assembly, to which the ring gear is linked.
These more compact gears, sometimes known as spider gears, are constructed from the side gears and a different set of pinion gears. This particular set of gears provides differential motion. The pinion gear powers the ring gear, which turns the carrier as the power flows through the differential.
The tiny pinon gears are then driven by the carrier, and these gears in turn power the side gears. The side gears, which are subsequently used to drive the wheels, are splined into the driving axles.
All modern automobiles and trucks include a differential in either the front or rear axle assembly. A center differential will also be used in all-wheel drive (AWD) installations to power both the front and back axle assemblies.
