Review: Never Fear - The Tarot
Review: Never Fear – The Tarot
Tumblr media
Synopsis: 13Thirty Books asked twenty-six authors to agree to write stories based on the Tarot, with the cards determining which stories the authors would write.  Over the course of several months we reached out to some of the best genre authors and proposed our idea.  Once we had our authors, we took a tarot deck and a list of all twenty-six names. We would read the author’s name, shuffle the…

Minutes 266
Tumblr media
1. Auditions
Several actors attended last month’s open auditions. After a week’s deliberation, Gilbert Taylor and Rebecca Munn have been invited to join the company.
Mr Taylor is recognised as a (very capable) light comedian, though I.G. thinks him capable of more challenging parts. Miss Munn, who has previously performed with groups in Greenock and Paisley, can play a femme fatale, but is most effective in a ‘harridan’ type role.
Co-incidentally
E.B. has received an (unsigned) letter in which allegations are enumerated about the circumstances of Mr Taylor’s departure from the Drumfeld Players. According to the author, Taylor’s time at the group was marred by a succession of feuds (with male colleagues) and unwanted advances (toward females).
2. Murders at the Grange
Colin Pender has negotiated a contract with Jim McCulloch, manager of the Grange Hotel: Murder at the Grange, a monthly event at which guests will enjoy a three course meal complemented by a murder investigation enacted by the Mystery Theatre Players.
C.P. suggests that mysteries might be concocted with Ironside Gemmell’s Plot Generator, a system of indexed cards designed to match disparate characters and propel them toward crisis. (This was last used for Armchair Detective, a mystery series that encouraged the participation of listeners. While some episodes are fondly remembered, E.B. cautions that the Plot Generator’s outcomes were often anti-climactic and occasionally nonsensical.)
N.B.
Members of the committee are perturbed by the request that a role be found for Francis Kemp, the Lomond Sound D.J. who enjoys a professional relationship with the hotel. Mr McCulloch suggests that Kemp might act as a narrator or master of ceremonies.
I.G. suggests that he has already written a role in which Kemp might excel: “Philip Kendall – a social climbing bigamist who refers to himself as ‘yours truly’ and pesters single women in restaurants...”
3. Gus Barbour
Gus Barbour – Lomond Sound’s breakfast show host – has been appointed to the station’s committee, apparently as Chief Operating Officer.
This, suggests E.B., augurs ill for the future of Midwich (the Soon Comes Night produced ‘soap’ in which many of the station’s presenters appear as exaggerated versions of themselves.)
Barbour has nurtured a long-standing resentment about his depiction as a vapid but self-important nonentity, obsessed by home-baking and Dr Who. He now chairs weekly meetings the agendas of which, according to reports, are dominated by developments at Midwich.
P.P. insists that our current dependency on Lomond Sound’s goodwill dictates the necessity of compromise. He is particularly concerned by the station’s burgeoning relationship with the Cutting Edge Group: last week its members descended on the studio to participate in an Armistice Day commemoration (a series of sketches that concluded with the lighting of candles and a rendition of ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone?’)

Reflections On a Trip to Chengdu
Tumblr media
by Kelsey Owyang / photo: the author
The automated voice calls out the names of stations, first in Chinese, then in Chinese-accented English. Shijiazhuang. Zhengzhou. Xi’an, Chongqing. Passengers stand eight-deep in queues at each doorway of each car in each station, a swirl of weariness and anticipation dotting their faces. Are they migrant workers traveling home? Elderly folk going to see their children, who have left for one of China’s dozen-million-plus metropolises? Or are they like me—just people trying to find some part of themselves in another city?
The train is scheduled to enter its final stop at 14:22. At 14:18, train-goers stand up, gathering their belongings in hard-sided suitcases and nylon bags and taped-up cardboard boxes. I bounce on my toes and twirl my headphones around my fingers. Finally, we have arrived in Chengdu.
I was on vacation from my adopted home of Beijing—“from” being the operative word, as I had hoped this trip could be a kind of escape. Obsessed with questions about identity, I had moved to Beijing after graduation hoping to disappear into the woodwork. What would it be like to be part of the majority, I wondered. Wouldn’t I learn more about myself, my real inner self, surrounded by people who look like me?
* * *
Stories of outsiders falling in love with China tend to be as romantic as they are exotifying. Privately, my Chinese American friends and I parody such foreigners: “After I came to China, I realized that rice porridge is so delicious,” we say, to illustrate how far our cultural acceptance has come. “But taking the Beijing subway can be so mafan,” we add with a wink, proud of our clever Chinglish use of the word for “troublesome.”
To be clear, my friends and I have fallen in love with our lives in China, too. I have developed an affinity for hot beverages, which are enjoyed here year-round (just as ice water is still served in mid-winter Maine, local Chinese friends like to point out). I save any piece of paper with vaguely calligraphic print, hoping it’ll improve my Chinese handwriting. I delight in the dissonance of daily experiences: old folks who grew up during revolution playing games on their iPads; subway cars packed to the gills at 10:30pm on a Tuesday; my happy-go-lucky hairdresser in his paisley button-downs, who casually mentions that his son studies in a city 75 miles from Beijing because he couldn’t get into a good middle school here.
If anything, our ridiculing—like most mockery—is a sign of insecurity. To claim allegiance to Chinese things, after all, would be to forfeit our foreignness, to uproot the stake in Americanness that we’ve been trying to plant our whole lives.
What would my great-grandfather think about my coming back to this country, over one hundred years after he fled it? I waver on this. Maybe he’d be proud of China’s economic, political, and cultural progress, and pleased that I want to learn about our culture. Or maybe he’d be ashamed that four generations of struggle has led us in circles, like dogs chasing their tails.
* * *
Sichuanese cuisine is the prototypical acquired-taste China food, preserved in the Western foodie canon in an Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown episode and countless Fuschia Dunlop essays. Mouth-numbing peppercorns and crimson slices of pepper decorate even the most basic of dishes; bright red oil taunts and shimmers, like dewdrops on stir-fried vegetables or as a veritable soup for steamed fish. The striking dishes are obvious muses, and enjoying them without hesitation is a mark of one’s ability to stomach the Very Different And Very Authentic Chinese Culture.
I barely had any of it. My best meal in Chengdu was at a Hong Kong-style chain restaurant in a mall. Fried fish with a sweet egg-and-corn sauce over rice; choy sum drizzled with oyster sauce; my favorite dim sum dish in a bamboo steamer. I’d come thousands of miles to eat the same stuff I’d grown up with.
I thought about my American-born parents, and how I used to make fun of them for their uncanny ability to find Chinese food no matter where we traveled. My mother, who drinks seven cups of lightly-brewed green tea every day, once made an argument for choosing a Chinese restaurant over a Mexican one based on the sole reason that they would serve tea as part of the meal. “Can’t you just brew the tea you brought with you?” I protested. “It’s not the same,” she replied.
I thought about Rebecca Solnit and all the sentences I had underlined in her Book of Migrations. “According to the way people tend to talk about blood and roots and other charged images now, this unknown country is what’s mine,” she wrote of her trip to her great-grandparents’ homeland, Ireland. “It isn’t, but… This other land in the guise of a motherland presented an opportunity for me to go both back and away, be lost and found, but mainly to think.”
I thought: maybe leaving a place is still the only way to understand how much of a place one is.
