Angelo Soliman (born Mmadi Make c. 1721, probably in present-day northeastern Nigeria/northern Cameroon; he died on November 21, 1796, in Vienna) was an Austrian Freemason. He achieved prominence in the Viennese society and Freemasonry.
Life
Angelo Soliman, whose real name was Mmadi Make, probably belonged to the Kanuri ethnic group.[1][2] His original name, Mmadi Make,[3] is linked to a princely class in the Sokoto State in modern Nigeria. He was taken captive as a child and arrived in Marseilles as a slave, eventually transferring to the household of a marchioness in Messina who oversaw his education. Out of affection for another servant in the household, Angelina, he adopted the name Angelo and chose to celebrate September 11, his baptismal day, as his birthday. After repeated requests, he was given as a gift in 1734 to Prince Georg Christian, Prince von Lobkowitz, the imperial governor of Sicily. He became the Prince's valet and traveling companion, accompanying him on military campaigns throughout Europe and reportedly saving his life on one occasion, a pivotal event responsible for his social ascension. After the death of Prince Lobkowitz, Soliman was taken into the Vienna household of Joseph Wenzel I, Prince of Liechtenstein, eventually rising to chief servant. Later, he became royal tutor of the heir to the Prince, Aloys I.[4][5] On February 6, 1768 he married Magdalena Christiani, a young widow and sister of the French general François Etienne de Kellermann (1770–1835), Marshal of Napoleon Bonaparte, Duke of Valmy.[6]
A cultured man, Soliman was highly respected in the intellectual circles of Vienna and counted as a valued friend by Austrian Emperor Joseph II and Count Franz Moritz von Lacy. In 1783, he joined the Masonic lodge "True Harmony", whose membership included many of Vienna's influential artists and scholars of the time, among them the musicians Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn as well the Hungarian poet Ferenc Kazinczy. Lodge records indicate that Soliman and Mozart met on several occasions. It is likely that the character Bassa Selim in Mozart's opera The Abduction from the Seraglio was based on Soliman.[7] Eventually becoming the Grand Master of that lodge, Soliman helped change its ritual to include scholarly elements. This new Masonic direction rapidly influenced Freemasonic practice throughout Europe.[8]Soliman is still celebrated in Massonic rites as "Father of Pure Masonic Thought", with his name usually transliterated as "Angelus Solimanus".[9]
During his lifetime Soliman was regarded as a model of the assimilation and perfectibility of Africans, but after his death he literally became a specimen of the "African race". Wigger and Klein distinguish four aspects of Soliman – the "royal Moor", the "noble Moor", the "physiognomic Moor" and the "mummified Moor".[10] The first two designations refer to the years prior to his death. The term "royal Moor" designates Soliman in the context of enslaved Moors at European courts, where their skin color marked their inferiority and they figured as status symbols betokening the power and wealth of their owners. Bereft of his ancestry and original culture, Soliman was degraded to an "exotic-oriental sign of his lord's standing" who was not allowed to live a self-determined existence. The designation "noble Moor" describes Soliman as a former court Moor whose ascent up the social ladder due to his marriage with an aristocratic woman made his emancipation possible. During this time Soliman became a member of the Freemasons and as lodge Grand Master was certainly considered equal to his fellow Masons even though he continued to face a thicket of race and class prejudices.
Beneath the surface appearance of integration lurked Soliman's remarkable destiny. Though he moved smoothly in high society, the exotic quality ascribed to him was never lost and over the course of his lifetime was transformed into a racial characteristic. The qualities used to categorize Soliman as a "physiognomic Moor" were set forth by pioneering Viennese ethnologists during his lifetime, framed by theories and assumptions concerning the "African race". He could not escape the taxonomic view that focused on typical racial characteristics, i.e., skin color, hair texture, lip size and nose shape. Neither his social standing nor his membership in the Freemasons could prevent his posthumous exploitation, leading to his ultimate status as the "mummified Moor".[citation needed]
Instead of receiving a Christian burial, Soliman was – at the request of the director of the Imperial Natural History Collection – skinned, stuffed and made into an exhibit within this cabinet of curiosities.[11][12][13] Decked out in ostrich feathers and glass beads, this mummy was on display until 1806 alongside stuffed animals, transformed from a reputable member of intellectual Viennese society into an exotic specimen. By stripping Soliman of the insignia of his lifetime achievements, ethnologists instrumentalized him as what they imagined to be an exemplary African "savage". Soliman's daughter Josefine sought to have his remains returned to the family, but her petitions were in vain. During the October revolution of 1848, the mummy burned. A plaster cast of Soliman's head made shortly after his death of a stroke in 1796 is still on display in the Rollett Museum in Baden. His grandson was the Austrian writer Eduard von Feuchtersleben.[14]

Growing to death: A punctuated extinction (part 3 of 3)
Fortunately, we have an increasing number of systemic-oriented movements challenging the mechanical minded, offering counter hegemonic options for a new social ecology4. The essence of such new social networks must reinforce as its primary function, the vitality of true systemic integration underlying a “one-earth lifestyle”1, 5. Should we remain unwilling to make needed variations to our excessive consumption, then we must be reminded that we are dealing with natural complex adaptive systems, and that adjustments will eventually and finally be thrust upon us, via nature’s own regulatory response1, should we not adopt a managed process by design5. The rapidity of our ecosystem changes5, should have alerted us into immediate action. Instead, all countries and nations are still instructed to pursue goals of constant growth, as opposed to seeking well-being5 (a key tenet of a new social ecology)1. Astute critics decries our selfishness, individualism and greed that drive consumption and acquisitiveness6. Others warn of problems arising from the expansion of the machine civilization, urging we end wars and human misery7. These holistic insights recognise our classic economic and development as flawed7, warning of the unopposed movement toward the “robotisation of the individual”7.
Today, this view of humanity is a reality, where we are seen and treated as consuming machines6 constantly having to pay taxes to governments, and profits to corporations. Mechanical leadership across both public and private sector fear a re-awakening in valuing how powerful we are as individuals who form collectives. As individuals we form the backbone of societies and thus expect to be governed by accountable and responsible persons, since it is the condition of basic freedom that we be ruled by an authority that we control6. In modern day acquisitive societies, both governments and corporations have a fixed interest in constantly promoting the accumulation of things – the one require citizens to pay taxes; the other demand profits. The chief mechanism of the acquisitive society promises “unfettered freedom” to the successful or strong, whilst the rest of us must strive toward this elusive goal6. This absorbing vision of infinite expansion, vaporise our moral fabric6, since we do not become religious or wise or artistic as these domains imply knowing and accepting limits. Instead, we wish to dominate and change the face of nature6. These warnings uttered almost 100 years ago has become our reality, and serve as a powerful exemplar of our negligence. Our destructive development models have taken us to the precipice of a self-induced extinction (Anthropocene). Institutional leaders continue to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to our greatly flawed development path1. It speaks to the alluring power of consumption cartels, distracting us with our own vanity, and numbing our intellect by occupying us with irrelevant gadgets1, 6, 8.
Ironically, capital owners and industrialists retain models that plunder our GPG’s, whist indigenous peoples are trying to preserve it8. A power dynamic, evident between Rich-Poor or North-South that underlie exploitative themes that resist adoption of systemic lifestyles1, 6, and instead opt for congruence of self-interest8. It is fortuitous that we have so many movements speaking up, and who are committed to free us from the mechanistic leadership punting the fraud of “compete-or-die” logic9.

Rory Litwin at LibraryJuice created an informal survey of librarians’ attitudes concerning print-on-demand materials.
Some of the results were...interesting.
...[O]f the 408 responses, 312 were from people who had clear ideas about POD (whether or not they gave opinions about it). Of those 312 people, 271 showed in their answers that they held mistaken ideas about POD and how it is used in the industry, while 40 understood POD more or less correctly. That means that 87% of librarians surveyed have incorrect ideas about POD. That is a strong result, and somewhat disturbing, as it has implications, in some cases, for how librarians do their jobs.
I also coded responses to see whether respondents viewed POD positively, negatively, or neutrally. Of the 312 otherwise usable responses, for 40 of them I couldn’t really tell how they felt about POD, leaving 272 usable responses. Of 272 usable responses to these questions, 198 librarians viewed POD negatively (73%), 12 viewed it positively (4%), and 62 viewed it neutrally (23%). I counted responses as neutral if they indicated that a book’s status as POD would not affect their treatment of it in the context of their work.
...Bearing out my initial impression from discussions on the AUTOCAT list, most librarians associate POD books with self-publishing and reprints of out-of-copyright works, and they also think that the signs indicating that a book is self-published or a reprint are what tell them that a book is POD. Common reasons given for identifying a book as POD were ugly covers, poor layout, poor editing, no ISBN, no catalog records available, known self-publishing imprints like CreateSpace, Authorhouse or iUniverse, and a lack of publishing dates. Many librarians who gave this type of response said that they could “always tell” when a book was POD.
I guess the question is begged here: should POD be a service provided by libraries?  Why or why not?  Should libraries eschew POD materials?  Why or why not?  And finally, should librarians catalog items to make clear they are POD, and if so, how would they do that?

The Devils' Tarot
Title: The Devils' Tarot
Divination from Hell comes with unfair advantages, as one would expect. Oracles are fun, but this book comes at the future with a proactive, take-no-prisoners attitude using birth dates as power. The zodiac is expanded to triple, and all thirty-six landscapes are described with Devilish accuracy and entertaining insight. The traditionally obscure trumps of the Major Arcana are revealed in a Hellish, new light, and are, finally, made useful to the inquiring mortal. THE DEVILS' TAROT is a highly original and brilliant synthesis of Eastern and Western Astrology, Numerology, and Tarot with a fool-proof sports betting and dating guide thrown in for good measure. Don't make love or war without it.
