District 3, Saigon has been a part of my daily life for two years since I started my career as a freelance tour guide. As a guide, I like discovering new places in my free time, either by myself or with a group of friends. As a result, I found so many interesting things to do in my current area. District 3 to me is a quiet town where a majority of the middle-class Saigonese live. When darkness falls, District 3 starts coming to life as people from other parts of Saigon flock here for a night of stress-killing.

What to do in Ho Chi Minh City District 3 at night?  District 3 nightlife has many coffee shops, boutique stores, hipster bars, restaurants, and clubs. Down below I will recommend my favorite spots to spend a night out in District 3. The price, vibe, and experience are different and diverse depending on which location you pick.

Feel free to mix and match from these recommendations to create a fun night out that is customized for you and friends! For me, a night date with my boyfriend would start with watching live music with a drink at the Acoustic Bar, then a lovely dinner at Shri, and a late night filled with dancing at the Social Club.

Acoustic Bar - Cafe Rock

Acoustic Bar to me is one of the leading bars with live music in Saigon. They hire fantastic bands who jam out classic rock ballads for customers to dance and sing to. These smart choices of rock ballad songs keep the faithful regulars coming back to the Acoustic Bar night after night. What we love about Acoustic Bar, besides the music, is the lounge itself which is not too big so we can actually feel the beat of the music.

There are several familiar bands playing at the bar each night as their regular customers always praise them highly. My favorites are the Stick-it-tu-da-man (Rock ballad), Akalika (Alternative Rock) and Acoustic Band (R&B, Pop Ballad, Blues).

When coming to the bar I would recommend taking a grab bike or taxi cab. Acoustic Bar is located at the end of an alley so parking is very limited. There are two things I would like to see improved in the future at the Acoustic Bar. The first is that smoking is allowed inside which becomes a bit heavy and smelly for non-smokers. My second suggestion is that the cocktails could have a better taste and variety if compared to other cocktail bars in the city. However, if you're here just for the live music then a bottle of Strongbow or beer still works perfectly for a fun night out. For fans of rock out there, remember to come before 9:45 PM, as this is when the bands ignite the crowd with impressive rock beats! Afterwards, feel free to request your favorite songs for the band to play. These bandmates are always happy to please their fans!

  Biacraft Artisan Ales

I'm more than happy to include Biacraft Artisan Ales to any of my guests or friends every time they ask me for recommendations. I always come here at least once a month because Biacraft has the most extensive collection of craft beers in Vietnam, both locally brewed and imported.

The Space is cozy and delightful, which is fantastic for a discussion with customers, a romantic date, or simply a stress-killing night. Biacraft founders did an excellent job in offering a wide range of beers that differ in their taste and smell. The way they name their beers is cool and exceptional. You can find some beers with their funny names such as Holy Grail, Short But Arrogant, or Ugly But Vain. In addition to the beer itself, the food is very tasty. Biacraft offers some classic comfort food along with more creative dishes. I have really enjoyed their Chicken Skin Nachos, Fresh Oysters, and Fish and Chips. If you are craving some great craft beers and comfort food then don’t miss Biacraft for a night out in D3.

  SOHY – Sky Lounge and Dining

SOHY comes to my mind when I need a panoramic view of the city and a deep conversation with my friends. To me, SOHY is a lot more than just being the highest rooftop lounge in Saigon.

My experiences with SOHY usually start at around 7 PM, a great time for dinner. I prefer booking a table for a group of 4 somewhere near the glass window. I enjoy the vibrant view when looking down at the buildings lit up at night. I’m a devoted fan of Vietnamese cuisine , but there are times when I'm desperate for a new cuisine to taste. That's when SOHY pops up in my head with its wide range of European cuisine besides Vietnamese food.

Even though the food is very good, what I think SOHY does best is its theme as a drinking establishment rather than a restaurant. I prefer coming here for a glass of wine, and I love how diversified its wine choices are.

The space at SOHY is fancy, serene, charming, and cozy. Since the lounge attracts a huge number of celebrities in the city, the quality of staff, food and drinks are second to none, which make sense of the price. I think SOHY is a great choice for a drink at a rooftop lounge to enjoy the company of friends or a date. The price is on the expensive side so do expect to pay for the view.

  The Gangs – Grill and Beer

Beer and grilled meat definitely cannot go without each other, and The Gangs does a great job in combining the two together. This is indeed an exciting and popular spot where people can gather for a fun night out for delicious food and beers.

The Gangs offer both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, which I prefer the outdoor setting more as it's spacious, refreshing, and better for smoky grills. The grilled meat platters here are all excellent in taste and diversity. When I come with my close friends, we go for The Gangs Meat Platter. On the platter my favorite dish is the lamb shank. The meat can sometimes be a bit on the chewy side, which is the preferred texture for Vietnamese. If this is an issue for you, please be sure to let your waitress know. The next thing I would say about The Gangs is the atmosphere is very lively and crowded. This is a typical example of a memorable hangout or even a date with someone you like. Hence, there's no reason why you should skip this place when looking for what to do in Ho Chi Minh City District 3 at night!

The staff are active and quick when called, which means your girls' night out or boys' night out with beer, BBQ, talkfest, and laughter will be handled well with no issues. Some of their staff also speak a little bit of English to make it easier for travellers.

  The Square Restaurant - Novotel Saigon Centre

Since I’m a big fan of casual fun talk and crowded nightlife, I don’t really go to a buffet restaurant quite often. In case I need some changes once in a while, I’ll be opting for The Square Restaurant at Novotel Saigon Centre for their famous seafood buffet. The Square is located on the second floor of 4-star hotel in District 3 – Novotel Saigon Centre. That's why interior decoration and staff quality are undoubtedly excellent. This open kitchen allows you to feast in a wide array of Asian – European cuisine every day, where you can observe the cooking process up-close.

The seafood buffet is universally praised by patrons of the restaurant. Their seafood is fresh, tasty and diverse, which comes in a range of about 50 – 70 different dishes. Oysters, lobsters, crabs and fish can be grilled upon request. Sushi and desserts are available as well. While an expensive option, this is an excellent and fancy choice for a night out on the town.

  Rico Taco Saigon

Rico Taco is where big fans of authentic Mexican food can satisfy their needs when in District 3, Saigon. I'm honestly not an expert when it comes to Mexican food, but Fish Taco here really wake up my taste buds. It's crispy and delicious with a sweet corn salsa. I highly recommend Fish Tacos for anyone intending to check it out.

At Rico Taco Saigon, the staff are well-trained and the atmosphere is perfect. There are two dining sections, one with A/C indoor and one outdoor. The Mexican background music boosts the dining space even more. They also offer pizza for those who aren’t in the mood for traditional mexican fare.

  Shri Restaurant and Lounge

It's not hard to find Shri mentioned in multiple platforms and blogs advising people where to have fun in District 3 at night. What I like about Shri beside its fantastic view are the food and drink selections.

Shri is well known for its stunning view from the outside patio on the 23rd floor. While Shri does serve food throughout the day on their lunch and dinner menu, I highly recommend checking out the Bar and Tapas menu for some small plates. This will go great with a cocktail on the patio as you sit and enjoy the gorgeous view of the city with a drink in your hand. I would recommend Shri for a romantic view and some cocktails with your significant other or a quiet conversation with a group of friends.

  Social Club - Hotel Des Art

Sitting up above the rooftop of the Hôtel des Arts Saigon, Social Club Rooftop Bar is where I drop by for an overview of the hectic streets of District 3 down below. The first time I came to Social Club, I was joining a networking event by Travel Massive. I knew right away I would be back soon.

You will find a setting of standing tables and  tall chairs scattered throughout the outside lounge, which is a thoughtful design for different group sizes. The quiet and high-end atmosphere here makes it perfect for a meet-up with customers or a date.

I don't just come here for a sip of cocktails, because the vibrant ambient music and DJs playing also help chase my stress away, especially at the end of a hard-working day. Uplifting music by the local DJ is in between 8:30 PM and 1:00 AM weekdays, and 8:30 PM – 2:00 AM weekend. Social Club's staff are fluent in English, well-trained, and active. If you are staying nearby this area, you may consider coming here at least once during your stay.

Five Things You Must Do In Memphis I realize that this is technically more than five things, but bear with me. I’m distilling hundreds of options for things to do in Memphis down to five “categories”, if you will. 1. Get A Dose Of Memphis Music History  If you’re an Elvis fan, or you have an afternoon to spend, a pilgrimage to Graceland is the perfect choice. If you don’t have the time or budget for Graceland, I recommend a visit to the hallowed ground of Sun Studio, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Soulsville, or the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum for a unique overview of Memphis The Memphis Music Hall of Fame (just steps away from Beale Street) and the Blues Hall of Fame (on South Main near the National Civil Rights Museum) should be on your list if you’re a music buff; both museums opened in 2015. 2. Eat BBQ Barbecue is the official cuisine of Memphis. Ask anyone “where is the best bbq in Memphis?” and you’ll get a dozen different answers. Here are a few to get you started: -The quintessential, visitor-friendly spot is The Rendezvous downtown. Get ribs, sausage and cheese plate, and brisket. – Locals love Central BBQ‘s four locations. Fuego Tortilla Grill : Fresh, Hand Made Mexican Food… Fast! I got a little adventurous on this visit and tried the Dr. Pepper Cowboy ($3.79) taco with brisket, grilled onions, Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, chipotle Cream corn and jack cheese on a hot, thick, hand made flour tortilla. The brisket was impressively prepared, tender and flavorful enough to be the pride of a small town barbecue joint. The chipotle cream corn and barbecue sauce were a perfect compliment to the brisket. I like a lot of sauce and flavor and the Dr. Pepper Cowboy did not disappoint. While eating this saucy taco had the potential to be a messy affair if the tortilla were to break, that didn’t happen and is unlikely to because the tortillas are so darned thick.

'Glamping' arrives on Governors Island By Bloomberg News - July 6, 2018

Governors Island is a mere eight-minute ferry from the southern tip of Manhattan (five minutes if you’re traveling from Brooklyn’s Pier 6) and already a favorite summer respite for harried New Yorkers. Before you’ve had time to stow your bike and collect your thoughts, you’ve been transported to a 172-acre car-free green space with playing fields and historic buildings, art installations and a grove of hammocks, plus an altogether slower pace.

Now you can sleep there, too.

After opening on June 29, with a grand opening event set for July 11, Collective Governors Island is a “glamping” camp from Collective Retreats that offers guests the kind of limited experience that’s trending in travel right now.

“Collective Retreats was born out of the belief that the travel experience doesn’t need to be confined to physical buildings that inevitably start to depreciate and become outdated very quickly after opening,” says Peter Mack, Collective Retreats’ chief executive officer and co-founder. Its mission, he explains, is to connect guests with the land, people, and themselves. “We don’t pave roads, pour foundation, or build any permanent structures in order to protect and respect the land we operate on.”

The company already offers seasonal luxury accommodation under canvas in other destinations where it would be difficult to build a hotel without impacting the beauty of the place, from 1,000 acres of ranchland in Vail, Colo., and Big Sky, Mont., near Yellowstone National Park, to an organic farm in New York’s Hudson Valley and a 225-acre ranch in Texas Hill Country.

“With this retreat, we are excited to offer an oasis for New Yorkers and visitors to escape the concrete and grind of the city, reconnect with nature, and recharge,” Mack says.

Collective’s “asset-light” business model—subverting a traditional hotel approach, in that it doesn’t own the land its camps are located on but is investing in a guest’s experience of a destination—not only works for the Trust for Governors Island, which acts as steward alongside the National Park Service, it’s also a model that clearly appeals to both veterans and innovators in the travel industry. Simon Turner, former president of global development for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, joined the company as an investor and adviser near the end of 2017, when a round of $10 million in funding was also announced. Earlier investors include Sam Shank, founder and CEO of Hotel Tonight; Evan Frank, co-founder and CEO of Onefinestay; and Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital.

Glamping as a trend continues to develop as well. In a 2018 study, travel company Cox & Kings named it one of the top eight experiences that will continue to grow momentum this year, as an “immersive experience that doesn’t compromise on luxury.” Searches for “luxury camping” and “glamping” interests have also doubled in the past three years, according to Google Trends.

Full disclosure, after a mosquito-filled tent experience while island hopping in Greece, I haven’t slept under canvas since I was a student, which is why the upscale twist of Collective Governors Island appealed to me. I escaped midweek to the island, from an oppressively hot and humid Manhattan, with my kids (Murr, 10, and Eve, 8). We were welcomed with a refreshing breeze as we cycled to the western side of the island to the six-acre camp (or is it glamp?).

The accommodation arcs around a central lawn overlooked by Collective’s Three Peaks Lodge restaurant, where you also check in, hang out, and take in a view of New York Harbor that includes the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline. An adjacent repurposed shipping container is a bar (alcohol license pending) and cafe for takeout, while a wooden stage will be used for live music performances but is also a handy platform for giant Jenga construction.

The head chef, Jason Rutigliano, works from an open kitchen/tent adjoining the restaurant. He does wonders on induction plates in lieu of gas flame, which isn’t allowed on the island. When he’s not cooking, you’ll see him sporting a selection of neon-colored headbands and talking to guests with gusto about the island’s farm, which supplies much of his produce, and the sustainability of the whole endeavor. He also played Uno with my kids; it’s that kind of place.

Diners can choose between an a la carte menu (highlights: chilled corn soup, $10; pan-roasted fish of the day with seasonal vegetables, $28; rigatoni Bolognese; $24) or the three-course “Ferry to Flame” prix fixe, which will change depending on what produce is available. Additionally, we were offered a BBQ-in-a-Box for a more authentic camping experience. You cook it yourself on one of the grills arranged around the lawn’s edge, but I gratefully accepted “Plan B,” to order off the menu after some light rain crushed my barbecuing confidence.

There are two types of luxury tents available. Ten “Summit Tents” (from $500, double occupancy, breakfast included) contain plush king beds or two singles and private bathrooms; roll beds can be added for up to two kids under 12 for an additional $100 a night per bed. Twenty-seven “Journey Tents” (from $150, double occupancy) offer a queen bed or two singles and share sparkling bathroom facilities, all with complimentary Beekman products. Next season, there are plans to add eight “Outlook Shelters” made from shipping containers. These units will include AC/heating, kitchen, bathroom, and a king-size bedroom with 180-degree glass walls to fully appreciate those knockout harbor views from your bed. For the 2018 season, occupancy maxes out at 100 people.

Inside the tents, it’s pure comfort, with neutrals and natural finishes such as fur throws, wood, and woven rugs. In the Summit Tents, designer Cassie Novick has also peppered slightly different nautical touches throughout; ours came with a rope light fixture, vintage books and binoculars, and brass compass. Add to that the 1,500-thread-count sheets, a French press coffee bar, electricity, Wi-Fi, and a hot shower—this was a far cry from my experience of a dome tent in Greece. With the tent’s front completely open, bug nets zipped up, we couldn’t wait for the sun to go down and the whole scene to light up, as the Staten Island Ferry glided back and forth. Magical.

One caveat: For all the tranquility that a night or two at Collective Governors Island offers, late evening is also when nightlife on the waterways comes alive with party boats. It’s fun to watch for a while, but when the beats continue into the early hours, it becomes (literally) tiresome. My kids slept through it after running themselves into exhaustion with new friends, but earplugs are an amenity that should be provided.

5 perfect daytrips for first time Bali visitors.

A simple itinerary for first time visitors to Bali with 5 perfect daytrips featuring fun filled activities taking you off the beaten track to explore places least traveled in Bali.

Bali’s natural attractions are many. The mountainous north-central part of the island, with Mount Batur and Mount Agung can be explored taking visitors past fast rivers, crater lakes and deep rain forests.

Beaches perfect for doing nothing, or active water sports … whatever you choose.  Diving is popular on the coral reefs off the northeast coast of Bali, while surfers head to the south western coast seeking good surfing waves.

Here are my suggested itineraries for 5 great daytrips when visiting Bali.

Daytrip 1:  Southern Bali – Pandawa, Dreamland and Uluwatu

If you’re in the mood for a lazy beach day, and a visit to some beautiful beaches and Uluwatu to take in a magical sunset and to spot a monkey or two … this is the itinerary for you!

Pandawa Beach:  Once known as Secret Beach, this beautiful white sand beach is laden with beach chairs & umbrellas which are offered for rent and serviced by nearby stall holders offering the obligatory Bintang beer for sale.  It’s also a great place to test your kayaking skills, but be careful of waves and ocean rips in the area!

Dreamland Beach:  A unique private beach tucked away at the northern end of Uluwatu near the New Kuta Golf Course.  Recently famous as the beach where Julia Roberts filmed the movie Eat, Pray, Love.  This beach was pumping great surf shore-breaks on the day of our visit which we watched from the bar cut into the side of the cliff above with an ice cold Mojito.

Our lunch stop was at a traditional Balinese restaurant called Warung Cikgo.  A quaint traditional Balinese open plan dining area with antique furnishings and a wall of carved Indonesian doors.  We were served one of the best Massaman beef curries ever and a perfect Nasi Goreng!  Put this place on your ‘must visit’ list.

Uluwatu Temple:  Uluwatu, is one of the best places to go to for sunset whilst you’re in Bali, with endless views overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dance performances.  A small forest lies at the front which is home to hundreds of monkeys who are notorious for snatching visitors’ belongings. They can usually be persuaded into trading the items for fruit, although this only encourages them to steal more.

As we were staying in Tanjung Benoa, we decided to try one of our favourite local restaurants for dinner.  Meads offers a convenient pick up and drop off service in their multi-seat golf buggy.

Meads Bali:   Meads has a great menu with steak and seafood options.   We chose a whole fish with a Balinese flavoured sauce and a perfectly cooked lobster – both spectacular. We’ve been to Meads a number of times previously when visiting Bali and it remains one of our favourite restaurants!

Daytrip 2:  Bali Safari Park & Sanur Beach

I wanted to take some photos of native wildlife whilst in Bali and where better to capture all species in one stop!

Bali Safari & Marine Park:  Great near natural environments for the animals, rare and endangered species such as the Javanese Leopard, Sumatran Tigers and the White Tigers.  We enjoyed the Safari experience however would have liked that to have been a longer experience.  There were plenty of exhibits to fill the day including a mythical dance extravaganza and an elephant pantomime featuring the Sumatran elephants.

Lunch overlooking the lions .. or were the lions overlooking us?  Lions perched on rocky citadels high above the restaurant separated by plate glass windows from diners.  A unique place to lunch!   See our earlier post Zoos are for Big Kids Too.

Sanur:  Enjoy sunset at Sanur where fisherman run their nets in the shallows of an outgoing tide.  Chic boutique shopping and trendy restaurants are in abundance in this relaxed part of Bali.  We’ve decided to spend more time in this region next time we visit.

Kampung Bule:   A restaurant suggested by our driver Irun, which was a mix of traditional Balinese and Western style menu serving their popular Balinese Herb & Spice BBQ, great Seafood selections and for those who want western style – some old favourites as well.

Moscow Mule:   Mix Vodka with Lime Juice, muddle some fresh mint leaves and add a splash of Ginger Ale and dress with a slice of lime.  You must try it!

We were impressed by the seafood choices and started with a shared serving of Prawn Spring Rolls followed with Lobster Thermidor for our mains … just because!

The seafood was delicious although the lobster was a little expensive, however for a special night it was well worth the expense!

Daytrip 3:  Garuda Cultural Centre, Bali Bird Park & Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Garuda Cultural Centre:  Touted to be the tallest statue in the world once complete, this statue has been under construction for about 20 years but is now under instruction from the President to complete by the end of 2018 in time for the world conference in Bali.  Extraordinary views right across Bali, including smoking Mt Agung in the distance.  Magnificent statues and vantage points throughout and I look forward to seeing the completed project.

Bali Bird Park:   A unique and educational attraction for the whole family. With nearly a thousand exotic birds from the Indonesian archipelago and around the world, the Bali Bird Park is a fun park for bird lovers.  Hundreds of different bird species can be found throughout the park grounds in aviaries and individual enclosures.  We just loved this Plain-pouched Hornbill from Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago in the Malay Peninsula.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces:  Ubud is famous for its beautiful scenes of rice paddies involving the subak which is the traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system, which according to history, was passed down by a revered holy man named Rsi Markandeya in the eighth century.  The Tegallalang rice terraces are a spectacular sight on the slopes across the valley.

Treat yourself to a great lunch or afternoon tea overlooking the spectacular views of these rice terraces.

Daytrip 4: Walking tour of Ubud

Ubud has a good selection of boutiques, jewelry manufacturing shops, woodcarvers and artists as well as local markets where you will find a range of clothing and exquisite jewelry and unique artifacts.

Don’t forget to use your bargaining skills!

Life in Bali rolls along at a slow pace most of the time and nothing will change that.  Ubud is a peaceful place where you will find yoga and relaxation classes, art and craft workshops and other creative opportunities.

Take the time to explore the shops in the lanes and alley ways that are tucked away out of the main traffic zones. You may find some unique bargains!

Monsieur Spoon:  Start your morning off with a visit to Monsieur Spoon, a family-run French Bakery-Cafe started by two Parisian cousins based in Ubud.  This cafe was one of our most favourite holiday finds during our last visit to Ubud.  Monsieur Spoon serves handmade French pastries, cakes, artisan bread and savouries – to die for!

Sacred Monkey Forest:  One of my favourite places to visit in Ubud is the Sacred Monkey Forest.  The monkey’s fascinate me.  They are curious, cheeky, sneaky and always playful.  Make sure your glasses and hats are secured, and backpacks and purses zipped up – they will attempt to steal anything they think may be food!

Ubud’s Royal Palace:  Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Agung Ubud), is one of Bali’s most interesting attractions located right in the centre of Ubud.  The royal family is in residence most of the time and most nights during the week the Royal Palace hosts  authentic Balinese dance performances, such as the Barong Ubud dance.

Stop in for lunch at Oops Bar and Cafe … What a great find.  Just an ordinary pub on the outside, but a delicious lunch with icy cold mojitos on the inside!

Daytrip 5:  Inner Bali – Temples and Terraces

An early 9 am pickup by our driver Irun who took us into the hinterland beyond Ubud to view some of the most significant temples in Bali and world heritage listed rice terraces.

Taman Ayun Temple:  Pura Taman Ayun as a beautifully appointed temple with it’s own surrounding moat, located in the village of Mengwi Bandung.  Historically the temple is associated with the King of Mengwi. This temple is where people come to worship the ancestors of the royal family of Mengwi.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan:  On the shores of Lake Bratan this temple is the primary temple of the many temples and shrines which are vital to the subak irrigation system popular in Bali.  Built in 1633, this temple is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danu.  Lake Bratan is the main source of irrigation in central Bali.  Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of this area.

Lunch at Gong Jatiluwih in the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, Central Bali was a perfect Balinese lunch experience.  The restaurant has been around for many years and is a popular lunch stop for tourists visiting the inland regions of Bali with spectacular views over the rice terraces.

Goa Gajah:  Located just 10 minutes from Ubud, Goa Gajah is a significant Hindu archaeological site.  Known as the Elephant Cave because of its close proximity to the Elephant River, this mysterious cave is surrounded by a courtyard of rock-wall carvings, a central meditation cave, bathing pools and fountains.

Its a peaceful setting with Hindu guides who provide details of the history of this serene place.  A visit to Goa Gajah is definitely a ‘must see’ and well worth including on your itinerary.

These suggestions are totally flexible so you can pace yourself to be as busy or as slow-going as you want.  Pace out your holiday, enjoy your adventures and make sure you leave plenty of down time for relaxing … after all you are on holidays!!

Watching people travel and eat on television has become such a staple in America. We tune in and find “the best unknown burger counter in Philly” and the “most decadent ice cream sandwich in Portland” or the “best places to eat on Oahu,” but what do you actually want to experience when it comes to food when you’re on the road?

Part of exploring the scenic route is finding your own favorite stops and bites that you go home and tell your friends and family about. We just tackled the food of Oahu and it’s now time to set some expectations… and this is NOT the best places to eat on Oahu, but the best food experiences WE discovered and how to FIND the best places to eat on Oahu (or the other Hawaiian islands).

The best places to eat on Oahu… or what to look for

We were pointed to Duke’s on Waikiki for fish and pie, and Matsumoto’s on the North Shore for Hawaiian shave ice, Trader Vic’s for mai tais… but then we found our own spots. What sounds good? Here are some quick hits for some easy Oahu favs:

Kono’s – Haleiwa, North Shore – have you tried a bomber? It’s a Hawaiian burrito of sorts, stuffed with kalua pork, cheese and sauce. And it’s delicious. Tip: eat outside and enjoy the Heiheis… just like Moana’s chicken. (actual Hawaiian word is “ka moa”)

Haleiwa Joe’s – Kaneohe Bay and Haleiwa – catch of the day, black and blue ahi, Hawaiian atmosphere you would seek out. Tip: get there early cuz they don’t do reservations.

Monkeypod Kitchen – Ko Olina and 2 on Maui – perfect combo of Japanese Hawaiian fusion. Tip:  Monkeypod is an easy alternative to resort dining if you’re staying at Aulani or another large property.

Why were these spots were great for us: because of their diverse menus, kid-friendly environments, and because we didn’t find them based on ads. If we can find delicious food and get some specifically local dishes (think poke and loco moco), then we’re good to go. The best places to eat on Oahu are going to be different for everyone and might not even be discovered/featured in a travel blog yet.

Tip: Oahu is heavily influenced by its Japanese population. There are many options when it comes to Japanese food, including sushi, katsu, and other cooking styles. And noodles. OMG: watch for saimin and then order it when you see it!

Food trucks on the North Shore of Oahu

If you ever take a trip to Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Washington you’ll no doubt see food trucks. Everywhere. We heard that there were some good ones on the North Shore of Oahu and it turns out that it’s true. Actually, I’m pretty sure food trucks as a staple in West Coast cities are because of the food trucks on the North Shore.

Just look at this totally incomplete map of food trucks on the North Shore. Some of the best places to eat on Oahu, for sure.

We found three hubs of food trucks on the North Shore. The first was just as we entered the historic town a Haleiwa. We found a few fresh shrimp options as well as a Thai, BBQ, and even Mexican food truck. See? The best places to eat on Oahu might actually not even be Hawaiian food joints. (numbers below correlate to location on map above)

#1 – Our pick: Big Wave Shrimp. Good grub: peeled garlic butter shrimp. Always peeled, otherwise it’s just a mess with no benefit to peeling them yourself.

The second hub was just after the bridge into Haleiwa. Again with the shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp. If you can get parking, send one of your travel companions to one truck and you grab a shrimp plate from another.

#2 – Our pick: any that have their “pass” rating posted clearly and with a short line. Good grub: all the shrimps (peeled, of course. Always peeled).

The third and favorite North Shore food truck hub we found was northeast of Haleiwa near Sunset Beach in Pupukea. With ample parking, restroom facilities across the street (yay for travel with kids!) and a wide variety of cuisines, this spot takes the cake. This food truck site is where we found some of the best poke around.

#3 – Our pick: Aji Limo. Good grub: Hawaiian Poke with sesame, seaweed and fresh ahi. It’s everything you dreamed poke could be.  Good grub: Poke and eating all of that goodness. Hawaiian Poke specifically, but the Mexican inspired swordfish poke was also good.

What is this “poke” stuff we keep mentioning? It’s basically seafood heaven in a bowl. You can get poke several ways, but our favorite is served over rice with ahi tuna as the primary fish component. Salmon and swordfish poke is also popular, but no fish is as smooth and delicious as ahi.

Want to know the secret to ordering a great bowl of poke? Keep it simple with just a few ingredients allowing the fish to speak for itself, ensure you get a little Hawaiian sea salt on it, and always take the seaweed recommendation from the chef/server. Seaweed isn’t everybody’s favorite food, but like lettuce or tomatoes, there are many types with different textures and flavor profiles. Add a little seaweed and go full Hawaiian.

Tip: locals who are being honest will tell you that the best poke you can get in a pinch is from Foodland. Yep, that’s the local grocery store chain and they make sure to have fresh poke readily available for their hungry Hawaiian residents.

I guess one of the best places to eat on Oahu is actually the local grocery store. 😉

Easy grab and go on Oahu

Other Hawaiian staples you may have heard about include loco moco, a variety of S.P.A.M. preparations and, of course, mac salad. L+L Hawaiian BBQ, a local cafe-type chain, makes the best easy-to-get mac salad and other Hawaiian yums, like fried fish, kalua pork, and tasty snacks. And ahi (of course). Seriously, did it occur to us that some of the best food on Oahu was from a convenience-cafe? Not hardly.

Also, and this may be completely unhelpful, but we were told that there are some pretty delicious and random markets that have awesome fish sandwiches and mac salads to go. If you’re heading to the beach, stop into any random deli and see what sort of grub you can find.

Imay go without saying, but Hawaii is home to all kinds of farms raising some delicious crops. Although most of the crops grown on Oahu were brought to the islands over the last few centuries, the Hawaiian people grow some amazing produce. Getting local in a new way

Believe me, we love eating local and getting recommendations from locals wherever we go. When it comes to the best places to eat on Oahu, we got fifty different answers from ten different people, but they all had the same concept: established and authentic. Our friends pointed us to a few places we could never find on our own, but then one of them said “Honey’s. We’re going there…”

When we were in Wisconsin we heard about supper clubs. In central California we experienced the steakhouses. In Hawaii you need to look for the country clubs or “live music” spots. Honey’s in Kaneohe is part country club and part lounge. It’s like the Elks Club meets the dinning room at the golf course. At Honey’s we found up-country cooking like pork chops and prime rib (#supperclub) but then we also had a full PuPu platter menu loaded with edamame, poke and kalua pork (#realHawaii).

What made this local dining experience so great was actually the live Hawaiian band sporting their flower shirts and steel guitars. Sending this local dinner experience over the top: a long time auntie of the area and clearly a regular at Honey’s gave the dining room an impromptu hula performance to her favorite Hawaiian tune. We couldn’t have planned it better.

Tip: although it may sound strange, ask a local for a music recommendation or where their ohana might meet up with the grandparents. Chances are you’ll find a place with a humble reputation and endless aloha spirit to share.

Our family trip to Hawaii wasn’t all about finding the best places to eat on Oahu, but we found pure Hawaiian gold for nearly every meal. There are two things I would like to see improved in the future at the Acoustic Bar. The first is that smoking is allowed inside which becomes a bit heavy and smelly for non-smokers. My second suggestion is that the cocktails could have a better taste and variety if compared to other cocktail bars in the city. However, if you're here just for the live music then a bottle of Strongbow or beer still works perfectly for a fun night out. For fans of rock out there, remember to come before 9:45 PM, as this is when the bands ignite the crowd with impressive rock beats! My experiences with SOHY usually start at around 7 PM, a great time for dinner. I prefer booking a table for a group of 4 somewhere near the glass window. I enjoy the vibrant view when looking down at the buildings lit up at night. I’m a devoted fan of Vietnamese cuisine , but there are times when I'm desperate for a new cuisine to taste. That's when SOHY pops up in my head with its wide range of European cuisine besides Vietnamese food.

Even though the food is very good, what I think SOHY does best is its theme as a drinking establishment rather than a restaurant. I prefer coming here for a glass of wine, and I love how diversified its wine choices are.

The space at SOHY is fancy, serene, charming, and cozy. Since the lounge attracts a huge number of celebrities in the city, the quality of staff, food and drinks are second to none, which make sense of the price. The Square is located on the second floor of 4-star hotel in District 3 – Novotel Saigon Centre. That's why interior decoration and staff quality are undoubtedly excellent. You will find a setting of standing tables and  tall chairs scattered throughout the outside lounge, which is a thoughtful design for different group sizes. The quiet and high-end atmosphere here makes it perfect for a meet-up with customers or a date.

I don't just come here for a sip of cocktails, because the vibrant ambient music and DJs playing also help chase my stress away, especially at the end of a hard-working day. SOHY comes to my mind when I need a panoramic view of the city and a deep conversation with my friends. To me, SOHY is a lot more than just being the highest rooftop lounge in Saigon.

My experiences with SOHY usually start at around 7 PM, a great time for dinner. I prefer booking a table for a group of 4 somewhere near the glass window. I enjoy the vibrant view when looking down at the buildings lit up at night. I’m a devoted fan of Vietnamese cuisine , but there are times when I'm desperate for a new cuisine to taste. That's when SOHY pops up in my head with its wide range of European cuisine besides Vietnamese food.

Even though the food is very good, what I think SOHY does best is its theme as a drinking establishment rather than a restaurant. I prefer coming here for a glass of wine, and I love how diversified its wine choices are.

The space at SOHY is fancy, serene, charming, and cozy. Since the lounge attracts a huge number of celebrities in the city, the quality of staff, food and drinks are second to none, which make sense of the price. Beer and grilled meat definitely cannot go without each other, and The Gangs does a great job in combining the two together. This is indeed an exciting and popular spot where people can gather for a fun night out for delicious food and beers.

The Gangs offer both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, which I prefer the outdoor setting more as it's spacious, refreshing, and better for smoky grills. The grilled meat platters here are all excellent in taste and diversity. When I come with my close friends, we go for The Gangs Meat Platter. On the platter my favorite dish is the lamb shank. The meat can sometimes be a bit on the chewy side, which is the preferred texture for Vietnamese. If this is an issue for you, please be sure to let your waitress know. The next thing I would say about The Gangs is the atmosphere is very lively and crowded. This is a typical example of a memorable hangout or even a date with someone you like. Since I’m a big fan of casual fun talk and crowded nightlife, I don’t really go to a buffet restaurant quite often. In case I need some changes once in a while, I’ll be opting for The Square Restaurant at Novotel Saigon Centre for their famous seafood buffet. The Square is located on the second floor of 4-star hotel in District 3 – Novotel Saigon Centre. That's why interior decoration and staff quality are undoubtedly excellent. This open kitchen allows you to feast in a wide array of Asian – European cuisine every day, where you can observe the cooking process up-close.

The seafood buffet is universally praised by patrons of the restaurant. Their seafood is fresh, tasty and diverse, which comes in a range of about 50 – 70 different dishes. Oysters, lobsters, crabs and fish can be grilled upon request. Sushi and desserts are available as well. While an expensive option, this is an excellent and fancy choice for a night out on the town.

You will find a setting of standing tables and  tall chairs scattered throughout the outside lounge, which is a thoughtful design for different group sizes. The quiet and high-end atmosphere here makes it perfect for a meet-up with customers or a date.

I don't just come here for a sip of cocktails, because the vibrant ambient music and DJs playing also help chase my stress away, especially at the end of a hard-working day. Uplifting music by the local DJ is in between 8:30 PM and 1:00 AM weekdays, and 8:30 PM – 2:00 AM weekend. Social Club's staff are fluent in English, well-trained, and active. District 3, Saigon has been a part of my daily life for two years since I started my career as a freelance tour guide. As a guide, I like discovering new places in my free time, either by myself or with a group of friends. As a result, I found so many interesting things to do in my current area. District 3 to me is a quiet town where a majority of the middle-class Saigonese live. When darkness falls, District 3 starts coming to life as people from other parts of Saigon flock here for a night of stress-killing.

What to do in Ho Chi Minh City District 3 at night?  District 3 nightlife has many coffee shops, boutique stores, hipster bars, restaurants, and clubs. Down below I will recommend my favorite spots to spend a night out in District 3. The price, vibe, and experience are different and diverse depending on which location you pick.

Feel free to mix and match from these recommendations to create a fun night out that is customized for you and friends! For me, a night date with my boyfriend would start with watching live music with a drink at the Acoustic Bar, then a lovely dinner at Shri, and a late night filled with dancing at the Social Club.

Acoustic Bar to me is one of the leading bars with live music in Saigon. They hire fantastic bands who jam out classic rock ballads for customers to dance and sing to. What we love about Acoustic Bar, besides the music, is the lounge itself which is not too big so we can actually feel the beat of the music.

There are several familiar bands playing at the bar each night as their regular customers always praise them highly. My favorites are the Stick-it-tu-da-man (Rock ballad), Akalika (Alternative Rock) and Acoustic Band (R&B, Pop Ballad, Blues).

When coming to the bar I would recommend taking a grab bike or taxi cab. Acoustic Bar is located at the end of an alley so parking is very limited. There are two things I would like to see improved in the future at the Acoustic Bar. The first is that smoking is allowed inside which becomes a bit heavy and smelly for non-smokers. My second suggestion is that the cocktails could have a better taste and variety if compared to other cocktail bars in the city. However, if you're here just for the live music then a bottle of Strongbow or beer still works perfectly for a fun night out. The brisket was impressively prepared, tender and flavorful enough to be the pride of a small town barbecue joint. The chipotle cream corn and barbecue sauce were a perfect compliment to the brisket. I like a lot of sauce and flavor and the Dr. Pepper Cowboy did not disappoint. While eating this saucy taco had the potential to be a messy affair if the tortilla were to break, that didn’t happen and is unlikely to because the tortillas are so darned thick.

Fuego Tortilla Grill : Fresh, Hand Made Mexican Food… Fast! I got a little adventurous on this visit and tried the Dr. Pepper Cowboy ($3.79) taco with brisket, grilled onions, Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, chipotle Cream corn and jack cheese on a hot, thick, hand made flour tortilla. The brisket was impressively prepared, tender and flavorful enough to be the pride of a small town barbecue joint. The chipotle cream corn and barbecue sauce were a perfect compliment to the brisket. I like a lot of sauce and flavor and the Dr. Pepper Cowboy did not disappoint. While eating this saucy taco had the potential to be a messy affair if the tortilla were to break, that didn’t happen and is unlikely to because the tortillas are so darned thick.
