Day 17 Several photographic perspectives on a cruise ship
I woke up this morning and as usual looked out the balcony windows, and did a double take, A huge cruise liner backing in to dock! According to some people I randomly spoke to later in the day, there were two yesterday, but I missed them as I was out of town. Today's plan was to collect my tiles and then there was no plan. I was going to have dinner with Rosie (of Halifax) tonight, but she wasn't feeling well, so we've delayed until tomorrow night.
I decided to go to the Marina to see if I could catch the water taxi across to Ferragudo with no expectations, as there wasn't much info online. Their last post in February saying they were back from their Christmas break. So for a start, I confidently headed in the wrong direction! Luckily I asked a lovely looking man early, as it was heating up outside. Once I got to the point I realised I had to ring to book. The man on the other end of the phone said "it is a taxi!" I'm sure he was thinking "stupid tourist!"
It was a pleasant crossing to Ferragudo (€9 return) and I was warmly met by the lovely Carla, the tile painting teacher. We had a brief chat about her upcoming holiday to Shanghai, she shared more food recommendations with me, gave me a hug and I was on my way.
While I waited for the return ferry I caught a glimpse of the life of the local fishermen. It was fascinating watching their weathered bodies. The men who caught the fish left their small vessel soon after docking and different men then pulled the nets off the boat and untangled the fish. I have no doubt some of that fish would be served locally, the coals were burning on BBQs nearby.
Given the water taxi could drop me off closer to town, my plan was then to try the old world, charming looking, Casa da Isabella for their traditional Portuguese cakes, but sadly they were closed (they were open yesterday, hmmm). I then diverted to find a dress shop I'd been in a few days ago, as I'd noticed a pleated tule skirt that I wanted to try on. And sold!
I then decided an early lunch would be good and went to the highly recommended Churrasqueira Guerreiro for piri piri chicken, but they are still closed for the holidays, omg! Ok, next stop Aqua Mall for the café in the supermarket, which is a thing here. And I wasn't disappointed, I had a pretty delicious amount of smoked salmon in a grain roll and a pastel de nata tarte for €5.19! And then another stop at the discounted section of that supermarket, damn they've run out of the dark chocolate brown rice cakes, so I purchased the dark chocolate oat rice cakes, €1 for 8 in each packet. They're quite addictive.
I spent the next hour or so finding a top and earrings to go with my new tule skirt and pending the weather I may wear it on my date with Rosie tomorrow night or save it for the Michelin star restaurant I've booked in a couple of weeks. The weather is quite warm during the day, ie I felt sweat running down my legs waiting for the water taxi at 10.15am, but then I just had the heaters on!
I've given up on decent coffee in Portimaõ. The best I can do to replicate a latte in Australia is to ask for a cappuccino with no chocolate at 67° and then I even forget my own instructions!
After getting the opening hours of the mercado wrong, I head to Crystal's recommended hairdresser. Crystal was the American woman I met with Brenda last week at The Chicken Tavern. Giselle can fit me in on 4th May and a regrowth is just €29.
Back to the gym, booked into Ricardo's TRX class, but Ricardo is not there, damn that. I will get that photo soon.
I've finished Scoop, now onto The Beautiful Game.
Tomorrow I have my much needed third Portuguese lesson in Alvor. Just to properly pronounce the names of each village in the Algarve would be helpful! Apparently learning new skills is useful as we age. I'm thinking maybe I'll find a language school in Brisbane. After Carla reminded me today that Macau used to be under Portuguese administration until 1999, I googled where Portuguese is spoken and some of these places are on my list....Portuguese is currently the fifth most spoken language in the world and an official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. It is also used in Macau and in Goa.
Talking about new skills and thrills, I've booked a sea kayak experience next Tuesday at 7am with Filipe Tidy to go into the Benagil Caves. He was another recommendation off a FB post. The woman said her kayak flipped and she lost her phone into the ocean. That's not exactly the experience I'm paying for. I did have some text banter with Filipe today and he thinks, given they are double kayaks "probably you join me". And he said "until now everyone survived" and then he said "I am lifeguard so you lucky". I responded with "I'll probably die from a heart attack first after all the bread and cheese and oil I've eaten".

what haircut did you get? I've always been scared to go to a barber bc i never know what to ask for
yeah that’s fair it always helps to know what you want. i would recommend taking a photo of the style you wanna get or if you know any guys, ask them what they ask for. also, sometimes barber shops have photos to show you the various razor numbers. in australia it’s the smaller the number, the shorter it cuts your hair. (it relates to length, for example asking for a 3 would mean the barber uses a 3 guard & it cuts the hair to 3/8 of an inch of hair (abt 10mm).)
when i go to the hairdresser i ask for a four on the back & sides. that means that the back & sides of my head is shaved to 4/8 inch. & then i just ask them to trim my hair on top a little bit, i like it when it’s a lil floppy like Prince Charming. i would take a photo & show u except that i hate photos, sorry.
i highly recommend googling various hairstyles & familiarising yourself with what different lengths look like. & when you go to a barber, you can ask for a longer cut & then go shorter - when I was trying to figure out what length to go, i asked my barber to start at a 5, & then asked her to go shorter to a 4. we stopped there which i rly like (i have very fine hair & if i go any shorter i start to look like the spider baby toy from toy story 1)
anyway, i hope that helped & if u have more questions feel free to ask! best of luck

16.
1 - What have you been up to so far today? Is that a typical thing for you to do on this particular day of the week? Not very much so far as it’s only 10.15am. I woke up around 8am, lazed around in bed for an hour, got up, fed the cats, let the dog out, vacuumed, washed the cat bowls and showered. Then, I made a coffee and now I’m doing this and kind of watching Homestead Rescue as well. That’s a pretty normal Sunday morning off for me, yes.
2 - Did you get a decent night’s sleep last night? How many hours sleep do you consider a decent amount? I did, I slept around 8.5 hours which is just about perfect for me. If I sleep too long I tend to feel a bit groggy and out of sorts.
3 - What is one silly thing that really gets on your nerves? People who don’t use their indicators when they use roundabouts.
4 - Who was the last person you saw who wasn’t family? What did you guys end up doing together? I actually don’t remember, ha, I’m not the most sociable person in the world. The last non-family member I spent a considerable amount of time with was probably Nigel and we just walked the dogs together down the shore.
5 - Do you prefer hot or cold drinks overall? In the morning, I love a hot coffee, but during the day I generally much prefer colder drinks.
6 - Do you own a decent set of waterproofs? If so, what do you use them for the most? If not, do you think that would be something you’d find useful? Yeah, I have to have them for work as otherwise I would be absolutely soaking wet and miserable all day long, lol.
7 - Do you have any plans for the rest of the day? No, not really. I have to be in later for the food shop being delivered and then I have a cat visit to do after that, but until then I have absolutely no plans whatsoever, which is just perfect as I have such a busy week coming up.
8 - How often do you get your hair cut? When hairdressers were closed due to COVID, did you try cutting it yourself at home? I cut my hair myself anyway, so COVID didn’t really impact me at all in that respect. I give it a trim every few months, I guess.
9 - What did you wear the last time you left the house? Is that different to what you’re wearing at the moment? I haven’t been out since Friday, and I was wearing work gear then - leggings, a vest top, a sweater and a waterproof jacket. I’m wearing a pretty identical outfit now, but the stuff I’m wearing now is just for comfort rather than practicality.
10 - Would you rather have a relaxing beach holiday or a more active holiday in the mountains? A beach holiday. I spend my working life being active in the mountains, lol.
11 - Do you know how to tie a tie? I do. I had to wear a tie for school for about fifteen years.
12 - How old were you when you first had a sleepover at someone’s house? Did you miss home? I don’t remember, but I guess around 6-7 years old? I don’t recall ever struggling with homesickness or anything like that, though.
13 - How often do you spend time with your extended family? Every 3-4 years maybe. My extended family all live in Australia, so with COVID, it’s practically impossible to visit or for them to visit us.
14 - When you get up in the morning, do you have a set routine? On working days I do, yes. I get up, make the bed, come downstairs, use the bathroom, put the kettle on, sort the litter trays out, vacuum and then have breakfast. After that, I wash up, pee, brush my teeth, get dressed and go.
15 - Do you remember the last time you cried? Were they sad or happy tears? I cried with relief when Susie messaged me to say Guy was home and out of the vets. i am so pleased he’s on the mend at last. I’m going to give him such a big cuddle on Wednesday, lol.
16 - What do you have planned once you finish this survey? Go and get some breakfast and another coffee.
17 - What was the last thing you cooked? Did you cook from scratch or just heat something up? I haven’t really cooked much at all recently, haha. Does toast count?
18 - Are you a fan of hot chocolate? Do you like it plain or do you prefer to add things like whipped cream or marshmallows? I like proper hot chocolate, not the rubbish instant stuff. I always have it with whipped cream, and I love it with peppermint syrup too.
19 - What caused your last injury? Benji leaping at me or a treat last week, hahah. That dog is STRONG.
20 - How many tattoos and piercings do you have? Do any of them have an interesting story behind them? I have one tattoo and nine piercings. I wouldn’t say any of them have any interesting stories behind them, no.
21 - What kind of flowers do you like the best? When was the last time someone bought those for you? Sunflowers, and I don’t remember.
22 - What’s the smallest thing you’ve ended a relationship over? Hmm, while it may have seemed petty at the time, it was really the straw that broke the camels’ back.
23 - Would you rather order a starter (appetiser) or a dessert? Or would you be able to manage a full three courses? Appetiser. I love the idea of desserts in restaurants but the the vast majority of the time, they’re disappointing lol. Probably because I’m just a bit too full to enjoy them properly.
24 - How do you get most of your news, if you pay attention to it at all? Social media.
25 - Have you or a member of your family been diagnosed with COVID yet? Nope.
26 - Are you a vegetarian? If so, what persuaded you to stop eating meat? If not, is it something you’d ever consider? I’ve been vegetarian before but it really wasn’t for me.
27 - Do you prefer rice or pasta? I’m really not a HUGE fan of either but I guess I prefer pasta overall.
28 - Is anything you’re wearing a gift? Who bought it for you? Yeah, my socks are lol. My mum got them for me recently as an early birthday gift. They’re so warm and cosy.
29 - What’s the dominant colour in the room you’re in at the moment? It’s equal between red, grey and white.
30 - Did you do laundry yet today? If not, do you need to do any before you go to bed? No, and no, I try to get all the housework done during the week so I can at least have one day that’s largely free of it.
