Austin 850 Beach Car de 1961

Les anglais ont un talent: Savoir prendre au vol les idées qu’ils n’ont pas eu. Alec Issigonis, alors qu’il travail déjà sur l’absurde Mini Moke, est contacté par un réseau hôtelier qui souhaite disposer d’une auto de service pour ses clients. Il charge le styliste Dick Burzi de dessiner un véhicule léger entièrement ouvert sur une base de Mini. En 1961 est présentée l’Austin 850 Beach Car. Elle récupère la coque à coffre de la Wolseley Hornet et le nez de l’Austin Mini. Les portes sont coupées, la vitre arrière retirée mais le toit en tôle est conservé au profit de la rigidité. La société Lloyd Loom se charge de concevoir sellerie, tapis et autres accessoires entièrement en osier. Produits en deux ou trois volumes, tous ces véhicules recevrons le préfixe « SPL » sur leur plaque constructeur: Appellation réservée aux véhicules spéciaux. Au final, ce seront moins de 10 Mini Beach Car qui seront produites jusqu’en 1962.

Austin Mini Banham Roadster 

This stunning Austin Mini Banham Speedster started as an, already desirable, 1967 Austin Mini 850 but has been subject to a nut and bolt restoration  The restoration included a full blasted shell and new heritage panels where necessary, the panels were de-seamed and lead filled before being treated to a 2K Ultra Black finish. The bespoke rear deck is held tight but can be removed, it is held in place with stainless steel screws from the rear window. New subframes, bushes, suspension arms, wheel bearings, brakes including calipers, braided brake lines and servo assisted brakes have all been fitted and every nut and bolt has either been chromed, painted or replaced. Sportspack arches were cut and profiled to fit flush against the panels, they sit above new staggered Minilite wheels and tyres with Spax adjustable dampers and Fusion sound package which includes a Sony stereo hidden under the dash. The car has custom door cards, full carpet and RS Turbo Recaro seats retrimmed in leather with green stitching. The 1275cc engine was completely rebuilt with a stainless exhaust and water-cooled aluminium inlet manifold. As you can see, the build was somewhat painstaking and the quality of the finish is worthy of any show.

HISTORY OF MINI COOPER:

     The first Mini was an after effect of a plan challenge in from Sir Leonard Lord, proprietor of the Morris Company, to his top architect, a man named Alec Issigonis, in 1957.

After World War II, the English engine industry was confronting a predicament that may sound natural to Americans today, vehicles had gotten huge and fuel costs had gone far up. Issigonis worked with a little group of architects to build up an answer.

      It was brought to Australia as Morris 850 in particular, and afterward as Morris Cooper and Morris Cooper S variants, too.

     The Morris name Mini was first utilized for Austin's variant by BMC in 1961. later in 1964, the Mini was fitted with new suspension that gave a gentler ride yet added more weight and a more exorbitant cost - two things Leonard Lord would initially not like to do. Additionally, from October 1965 the choice to choose a four speed programmed gearbox opened up and these vehicles got known as the 'Smaller than normal Matic'. 

     In the 1960's creation numbers for the Mark I totalled to around 1,190,000 vehicles and it's said that bunches of benefit cash came from discretionary additional items, for example, safety belts, entryway reflects, a radiator, and a radio.

Eagle-eyed British Leyland fans will also notice that this is not a Mini Clubman estate - although you can be forgiven for assuming. This is, in fact, a Mini Clubman Van - built by British Leyland Motor Corp. of Australia at Zetland near Sydney. The windows were added later. Australia proved a surprisingly robust market for the #Mini, and local production began in 1961. After 1965, the minis built “down under” began to diverge from the British versions. The Clubman Van ended up being a product unique to Australia and New Zealand as a result. - With supplies of favored American cars limited after WW2, Australia was a big market for British cars - In 1950, 4 of every 5 cars sold in Australia were British. But after the debut of the Holden in 1948 and increasingly local Fords, Australia enacted local content rules to protect its nascent industry and foster local production. That led Nuffield/BMC to expand its CKD-build operation into full production at Zetland as a result. Adapting the larger British cars to try and compete with ever-larger Holdens created cool local cars, like the Austin Freeway and Morris Major, but they sold poorly. Then came the Mini. - The Mini 850 proved as popular in Australian cities as it did in Europe, and GM and Ford had no answer for it. By 1961, it was being built in Zetland, first in CKD form and then in full by 1965. Having failed to beat Holden’s EK and EJ series with larger cars, from 1966-72 BMC concentrated on the fwd Issigonis cars - Mini, Landcrab, and ADO16. Even though the mini was at one point Australia’s 2nd-best selling car, production was still small compared to Longbridge, and BMC Australia declined to update the car with the Mk2 Mini shell updates in 1967 for cost reasons. - By 1970, the car needed a visual update, and as it happened British Leyland had one handy - Roy Haynes’ restyled Clubman. For 1971, all Australian Minis got the Clubman treatment up front, but used older body panels behind the A-pillar. The Mini remained popular in Australia into 1978, but BL overextended itself on the P76 project, designed to fight Holden head-on.
