Lawn Aeration
Your Guide to Lawn Aeration: Why, When, How
You picked the perfect grass. You’ve mowed and watered correctly and taken care of those grubs and ants. It’s a healthy lawn, but you’re still struggling to take your lawn to that next level of perfection.
You need to aerate.
Almost all lawns will benefit from aeration, but a great lawn demands it. Any lawn seeing high traffic, excessive thatch or heavy soils will benefit most from a good round of aeration.
If you haven’t done it before, poking a bunch of holes in that lovely grass cover can be a scary prospect.
So here’s what you need to know about aeration, how to know if you need to aerate, when and how to do it, and whether you may be better off calling in the pros.
Relieving Compacted Soil
Over the years, especially for a well-trod-upon lawn, the soil underneath the grass will compact. Time and trampling reduce pore space between soil particles, says Timothy Daly with the University of Georgia Extension in Gwinnett County.
In compacted soil, water, nutrients and air have a tougher time making it through to your grass roots. Clay soils are especially susceptible to compaction, he said.
So give your soil some elbow room. Aerating your lawn encourages root growth, relieving that pressure and lessening soil compaction. That means water and nutrients can permeate your root zone and keep your lawn healthy and happy.
Other Aeration Benefits
Benefits of aeration go beyond opening up access your soil.
Aeration invigorates roots and stimulates growth.
It reduces thatch accumulation.
It enhances water and nutrient movement through your soil and even smooths out bumpy lawns.
It helps with weed control, as a healthier lawn will crowd out weeds.
It’s especially important if you’re trying to establish a new lawn.
Sodded lawns should be aerated annually for the first six to eight years, according to NDSU.
Coring Aerator Versus Spiking Aerator
Soil plugs left behind by core aeration. Credit: Flickr
Lawn aeration comes in two basic flavors: coring and spiking.
The consensus among experts is that coring is best. It removes plugs of soil from your yard. That frees up space and gives the soil room to decompress.
Hollow-tine core aeration is the preferred method, Daly says. Actually removing soil and distributing that over the surface goes a long way in loosening up compacted soil, while the cores break down and provide nutrients
Core aeration also creates a system of large pores for moisture and plant nutrients to be taken into the soil.
Plugs should be ½ to ¾ inches in diameter, 2-6 inches apart and 2-4 inches deep, according to the University of Maryland Extension Service. Because soil compaction occurs primarily in a thin surface layer, penetrating 2-4 inches easily penetrates the compacted top layer.
Spike aeration — simply using spikes to poke holes in the lawn — is an option but it’s usually not recommended. The spikes create holes for water and nutrients, but do so by pushing aside soil. That means the spikes actually compact the soil further around the holes.
When to Aerate
Don’t just run out to the rental store and fire up the aerator. Your lawn will need time to recover, and that means time to grow.
The best time to aerate depends on your grass type and when it’s growing its strongest.
Only aerate when the lawn is growing vigorously, says the Maryland Extension. That mostly means early spring and fall for cool-season grasses and late spring or summer for warm-season grasses.
Warm-season turfgrass species such as Bermuda, Zoysiagrass, St. Augustine and Centipede grass should be aerated during their active growing season of May to September, Daly says.
Cool-season varieties of grass such as tall fescue, he says, should be aerated between September and November or March and April.
How Often to Aerate
Time of year isn’t the only timing consideration you need to take into account either. You need to think about frequency.
If your lawn receives heavy foot traffic, aerate every one to two years. Otherwise, every two to four years should be sufficient.
Daly says that the average homeowner’s lawn needs to be aerated every three to four years, but aerating every year doesn’t hurt anything.
At the other extreme, heavy usage areas including as ball fields or grassy areas where vehicles drive or park need it two or three times a year, he says.
How to Tell When Your Lawn Needs Aeration
So how do you know when your lawn is compacted and in need of aeration?
Virginia Tech recommends removing a square foot section of lawn and checking the roots if you’re in doubt. If those roots only extend into the first couple inches of soil, it’s time to aerate.
Virginia Tech lists a few other reasons, too: lawns that are frequently used or driven on, lawns with heavy clay soil or more than ½ inch of lawn thatch.
Thatch is the layer of plant material that builds up between the soil and the green blades of grass. Some more aggressive-growing grass species such as Kentucky bluegrass build up a thatch layer more quickly. If that's the case, it can increase how frequently you aerate.
Before Aerating, Water
So it’s time to aerate. You know your grass type and you’ve marked the day on your calendar. Your soil is hard and your turfgrass is suffering.
But it’s still not quite time to fire up the aerator. First, water your lawn a few days before you plan to aerate. “Make sure it’s watered,” Daly emphasizes.
Aerating an unwatered lawn, he added, especially one with clay soils can be like trying to aerate concrete. He knows from experience.
Aeration Costs
When it comes to aeration equipment, you can spend as little or as much as you want.
Simple hand-operated options, just a pole with the spikes or cores on the bottom and handles on the top, can cost as little as $25. Though spikes aren't as good as core aerators, they’re fine for small areas of lawns.
But heavy drums to pull behind a riding mower, and motorized push-corers can run as high as $350. Stand-alone motorized core aerators can cost $3,000 or more.
Between those two extremes are nonmotorized walk-behind options that spin spikes or cores on a drum, and can run around $100.
If you’re not looking to permanently add one of these to your arsenal, stores such as Lowe’s will rent them out. Costs range around $62 per four-hour minimum or $88 for one day.
Not willing to do it yourself? Lawn care services companies will provide lawn aeration.
Aeration Tips
Heavily compacted lawns may need two passes to make sure the entire lawn is covered.
The machine will pull those cores of soil up and deposit them on your lawn surface. Don’t worry about cleaning up those soil plugs. You can either mow them into the lawn, or just leave them. They will eventually break down due to watering and mowing and return to the lawn as a topdressing material.
After aeration, fertilize and irrigate as needed. “Aerated lawns respond well to fertilization or overseeding; this can be done immediately after aerating,” says the North Dakota State University “Lawn and Garden Report.”
If you plan on topdressing with something other than the soil plugs themselves, Daly recommends avoiding sand. Sand can interfere with water infiltration and cause the soil to harden, undoing all that work you just completed.
Apply a light covering of an organic soil amendment mixture, he said, and you should be good to go.

How to Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly Through Simple DIY Renovations
Columnist Alice Robertson shares tips for how to make a DIY eco-friendly home.
Going green is more than a fad. Making a conscious effort to use less energy and create a sustainable lifestyle is important for the environment. If you want to do your part and are looking for ways to cut back on energy waste, one of the best places to start is within your own home. There are many simple changes you can make that can drastically reduce your carbon footprint.
Be Mindful of Your Appliances
We all know we should turn off the lights when we exit a room, but sometimes that’s not enough. Your lighting can take up to 20 percent of your electric bill -- that’s a significant amount. The quickest and easiest fix is to replace all the bulbs in your house. Though tedious, using energy efficient LEDs or CFLs can reduce your energy use by 75 percent. Not to mention, most energy-efficient bulbs last longer too, so you’ll have to change them less. Large appliances, like your refrigerator or washer and dryer, are massive energy hogs but are expensive to replace. It is okay if you cannot afford to change these items out at the moment. When that time comes, be sure to invest in Energy Star appliances to make sure they are energy efficient. Though they may be more expensive, remember that they will be a huge appeal to future buyers.
Photo courtesy of Homes to Love
Seal the Leaks
Drafts are a homeowner's worst enemy. According to How Stuff Works, roughly 20 percent of household heat and cooling is lost to the outdoors through leaks in the house. That is a massive waste of energy that can easily be avoided. Hire an inspector to conduct an energy audit to look for air leaks and where you can reduce energy transfer. Some things may require a larger investment on your part, such as installing double pane windows or adding eco-friendly insulation. Other fixes, like patching up leaks or straightening window frames, could be done with a handyman. In Austin, a handyman typically has a one- to two-day turnaround and can cost between $163 and $550, depending on the project. That’s a small price to pay for large savings down the road.
Reduce Water Waste
Taking shorter showers is not necessary for reducing water waste. Instead, swap out all your faucets and showerheads with low-flow options. Pricing can vary greatly on faucets, and if you do not think you can swing it at the moment, consider investing in an aerator instead (a six-pack of aerators can be purchased for $7.99). These generally cost only a few bucks, and you can install them yourself. Not only is this good for the environment, but it’s also good for your water bill too.

Create an Eco-Friendly Lawn
Often, when we think of creating an environmentally friendly home, we think of the house itself. However, what you do with your yard can have an impact on the environment. Gas mowers, mulch, inorganic fertilizer, and poor water runoffs can be causing more harm than good. To reduce the need to water your yard, stay away from generic grass seeds. Instead, use grass and shrubs native to your area. They will require less maintenance and will be able to withstand local climates and diseases. Also, be mindful of using too much mulch, as it can cause erosion to the soil, and try to use homemade compost instead of fertilizer. When landscaping, remember to properly plan for growth and water flow. Do your research and consider consulting an expert to learn which shrubs and trees will thrive in your environment and how to place them.

Staying Green
Committing to an environmentally friendly home does not have to be an ongoing chore. Many of the above solutions do not require any attention beyond the initial setup. In other words, you can continue living your life with no interruptions. Since going green can be that simple, there is no reason not to do it. Read the full article

Unfortunately in my experience most of these techniques do not work as advertised, with only two gutter protection methods which are efficient. Summer and Spring are the very best times of yr to make installations, repairs, cleaning, and so on. It actually pays to inspect your gutter system each occasionally, but specifically during Summer just before the season is over. With the screens in place it may be tough to clean the gutter because the small debris gets stuck within the mesh of the display screen, however some methods flip over permitting the gutters to be cleaned extra easily. The cover extends over the gutter but keeps a slot open for water to drain into. This gutter cowl lets water in but retains most leaves and debris out.
The large opening gutter screens that snap to the gutters and the gutter cover design usually are not beneficial. These are the brackets that hold the drain system to the roofing. Professionally put in gutter guards simply cut back the amount of gutter cleaning required on a property, nonetheless the roofing and gutters should still be checked and cleaned if essential once per year. Keeping the gutters and downpipe free from blockages can develop into considered one of the most important roofing and guttering upkeep duties round the house. The gutter covers with the slender slit do a better job of conserving debris out of the gutters, however I've seen conditions the place these systems are clogged with dirt and debris. You possibly can forestall the enlargement of moulds in your house by successfully directing water far from it and retaining susceptible structural parts as dry as attainable even through the wet months. Older gutters could break below the water strain. The contents of this hub are primarily targeted to those that dwell within the United Kingdom, the merchandise described right here will not be available within the U.S. There may be other systems that work, nevertheless those are the only two I've seen in person that truly work.

Ultimate Guide to Green and Healthy Lawn for Beautiful Home Garden
Do you have a lawn yard at the moment or wish to have one in future? If your answer is yes, then you will enjoy reading this post. The truth is, keeping your lawn and landscape green and healthy isn't as difficult as we make it out to be.
A few carefully-articulated lawn care practices will have your lawn looking green, beautiful and healthy for a long time to come.
To further aid lawn owners in their quest to have a healthy, lush lawn in their garden, we have compiled the ultimate guide to having a green and healthy lawn in your home garden.
All the listed tips in this post are fully do-it-yourself. Even if you are a complete newbie, barring time and other contingencies, you should be up to speed to handle them like a pro in no time.
However, for best results where your lawn is concerned, we still recommend using a lawn mowing service. Most lawn services not only have the experience, time and manpower but also have the needed equipment to do an excellent job.
1.) Identify the type of lawn grass that grows best in your location
If you want a beautiful lawn in your garden, the first step to take is to identify the type of lawn grass that grows best in your local area.
As soon as you know this, efforts can be directed towards planting them in your garden.
To get this information, you could do a little research on the internet or contact a lawn mowing service near you for assistance.
2.) One of the best landscaping ideas is to mow correctly
Mowing has a lot of effect on how well your lawn grass will grow. The accepted height to cut your lawn to during mowing is to cut only one-third of its height.
Cutting lower might leave your grasses bare and exposed to the elements. It could also reduce photosynthetic function.
Mowing direction should also follow a specific pattern rather than being erratic.
3.) Keep your lawn mower in the best condition possible
A poorly-maintained lawn mower will usually have blunt blades and a faulty mechanism. Neither of these is ideal for maintaining your lawn yard to look healthy and neat.
Blunt lawn blades cause more injuries on the lawn grass because they tear and rip compared to sharp blades that give a clean cut.
After each mowing session, your lawn mower should be cleaned, re-oiled and stored in a clean, dry place.
In addition, regularly sharpen the blades for a clean cut during mowing.
4.) Keep your lawn yard free of debris
A dirty lawn will often attract germs and other unpleasant elements. Your lawn should be kept free of debris and other items that could mar its look.
Debris, fallen leaves etc should either be picked or raked once noticed on the lawn.
5.) Water your lawn often
Watering your lawn is an ideal lawn care practice every lawn owner should remember if they wish to have a green and healthy lawn.
Without adequate water supply, it's easy for your lawn to dry up and lose its lushness.
For support on how to do this if you have a large yard, ask for recommendations on any lawn or landscaping company in Texas for assistance.
6.) Apply fertilizer on your lawn after a harsh season
Just like food helps us replenish our bodies by giving us nutrients. Your lawn grass needs rich fertilizers to look and grow healthy.
Consult with a lawn care service or do your research before picking any fertilizer of choice.
Whatever product you go for, ensure it is an organic one, as they break down completely in the soil with no toxic remnants that could cause harm.
7.) Consult a professional lawn care service
As a lawn owner, it is necessary to be in close communications with any professional lawn care service near you.
They will serve as your consultant when you need a service or have inquires to make.
One of the best lawn mowing services in Texas, GoMow Lawn Care is highly recommended.
8.) Aerate your soil once in a while
Soil aeration creates holes and spaces in the compacted soil making it easy for microbes, nutrients, and air to move from one area of your soil to another.
Over time, it's easy for your soil to get compacted and when this happens, your lawn is bound to suffer its effects.
Aeration prevents this as it loosens up the soil and facilitates osmosis.
9.) Eradicate weeds and other pesky pests
Weeds and pests can make your garden unsightly and uncomfortable to be in. Weeds compete for space and nutrients with your lawn grass and if left for long might even choke off them to death.
Also, an unattended lawn yard can easily attract rodents and their likes. Who wants to be in a garden infested by rats, snakes and other vermin?
Weeding and pest eradication should be taken seriously if you wish to have a beautiful, healthy lawn yard.
10.) Avoid inorganic, synthetic products where possible
Inorganic and synthetic products are usually chemical based and hardly bio-degradable. This means they can remain in the soil as toxic substances with the potential to cause harm to both your grasses and other living things long after they have been used.
If you are using any landscaping company in Texas, make inquiries concerning the type of products they use. You don't want your lovely, green lawn turning bad in a few months’ time.
11.) Reseed your lawn when it's becoming sparse or growing patchy
Are you in the Austin area? Is your lawn grass growing thinly? Consider getting a lawn maintenance service in Austin to reseed your lawn with fresh, healthy grass seeds and have it growing full and thick once again.
It's easy for your lawn to lose nutrients and become poor after a harsh season. When this happens, reseeding is the answer. It can be done fully or locally (on the patchy area).
Final words
These are 11 tips for the ultimate guide for keeping a green and healthy lawn beautiful in your home garden.
We hope you start implementing them going forward!

Tips for Choosing a Texas Lawn Care Company
How to Choose the Right Texas Lawn Care Company
Almost everyone in Texas – from Austin to San Antonio wants to have an attractive landscape, with a flourishing, weed-free lawn and healthy trees and bushes. Making that transpire is a team effort, where you and your lawn care service each play a significant role.
Think about keeping your grass green pretty much the same way as having healthy teeth. Your dentist offers routine care in addition to guidance on avoiding problems and warning signs to look for. Between visits, you floss, brush and follow suggestions for any specific care.
You really want to have that same type of relationship with your lawn service. Routine weed killer treatments and fertilizing alone won’t ensure a lawn you’re proud of and appreciate being in. For the ideal results, you need to partner with someone who: is knowledgeable in what they do; can clarify what you should do, such as how to water your lawn and mow your grass effectively; and can help you identify threats to your lawn from bugs and diseases.
Five Tips for Choose a Lawn Care Company in Texas
So, how do you find a Texas lawn service that matches the criteria we want? Texas Lawn and landscaping service websites are a great place to begin. Here are five important things to look for when trying find a company to take care of your yard.
What Are the Routine Lawn Care Programs?
Analyze treatment programs from lawn service provider to lawn service provider. Do they offer both turf maintenance and ornamental tree and shrub care? Are lawn care treatments customized to particular varieties of turf? For instance, what makes your neighbor’s warm-season grass flourish won’t automatically be what your cool-season grass needs. Look for statements about how treatments are good for lawns, trees and shrubs.
Make Sure You Hire a “Full Service” Lawn Care Company
The demands of your lawn can shift from season to season, year to year. Just like you wouldn’t go to a dental practice who just does cleanings, you really want to work with a lawn care company that can provide extra services when you need them.
At a minimum these should consist of identification and treatment of diseases and insects, and service calls between routine lawn treatments if you notice an issue. Other typical yard services to look for incorporate aeration, overseeding and lawn pest control.
Be Familiar With Who is Taking Care of Your Lawn
When it comes down to lawn care technician training, the more the better. This goes for not just knowing the best ways to administer turf treatments effectively and safely. They should really be able (and willing) to address questions you have about your treatments, your yard’s fundamental needs and how you can meet them, and alert you to something you may want to keep an eye on.
When it comes to the techs themselves, the fewer the better– at the very least in regards to who deals with your property. You’re better served by having the same dedicated service technician or tech team visit after visit. By doing this they get to really know your yard and can stay on top of any problem areas.
Preventative Lawn Care is the Way to Go
What tips and info do they provide to lawn service customers? According to where you live, there are particular insects, lawn diseases, and other complications that can arise with lawns, trees and shrubs. When you know what to look for, you’re able to get in touch with your lawn care company for a service call, so the problem can be identified and addressed before harm is done.
