I recently spent 2 days with a rental 2018 Audi Q5. I'm impressed.
A rare dealer service appointment to take care of 2 recalls on my new-to-me E92 gave me the chance to drive something I normally wouldn't. They couldn't give me a loaner since I'm under 25, but they did offer to pay for an Enterprise rental. The majority of cars on the lot were bog-standard boringmobiles, except for a Beetle convertible and a new Audi Q5. I had to pay a little extra out of pocket since it was in a higher tier, but I went ahead anyway since I wanted to see what this whole "premium crossover" thing was about.
Styling: frankly, it looks like every other crossover but with Audi styling cues. Not pretty but I didn't hate seeing it on my driveway either. It didn't help that it was in Rental White. In the wealthier parts of my locale, I’d probably have a hard time finding mine since these are incredibly common (or maybe it’s just Baader-Meinhof at play).
Interior: this was my first time driving an Audi, so all I knew was what I read online. Every button and scroll wheel felt incredibly solid, though I couldn't help feeling that time and usage would cause tolerances to widen and they wouldn't feel so nice in a few years (Audi owners, feel free to tell me whether I'm right or wrong because I’m hoping that’s not the case). The only exception was the turn signal and wiper stalks, which feel better on my cars (more positive engagement / tightly controlled motions, but these ones stayed in place instead of returning to center so there is that benefit).
I really appreciated that leather was standard and that the seats were very comfortable, adjustable, and had 4-way lumbar support, and overall the control layout made sense and I got the hang of using them without looking fairly quickly. The volume knob is stupidly far from my right hand (seriously, why is it so far away?) but I just used the steering wheel controls. The gauge cluster and MMI are well-designed, though it didn't have nav and for the most part I just used Apple CarPlay so I don't have any deeper insights on the infotainment. I like tablet infotainment screens for the most part (shocker, I know!) and this one was as good as any of the others.
Features: I'm pretty sure this was the base Premium trim, but despite that, the only thing I wished I had was heated seats. Otherwise it had everything I would want, though realistically I’d spring for a higher trim if I was buying one for the slightly lower-profile tires and virtual cockpit, as well as some more driver assists.
Driving experience: this is the real star of the show. Before this, the only crossover experience I had was my mom's old 2008 Honda CR-V LX, and that was not a fun car to drive at all (though it had surprisingly nice steering), so my expectations were that this Q5 would be wallowy, top-heavy, and boring, but at least it would be smooth.
My expectations were promptly upended. This honking beast had no right to be as fun or responsive as it was. It was so easy to drive and responsive, and I was truly not expecting that.
Aside from being completely stable at high speeds on the highway (as is the case with all premium German cars), the body control was very good, the steering was precise (though extremely light, but apparently I don't mind that), and the engine and transmission were amazing partners.
A 252hp turbo-4 and 7-speed DCT made for an extremely responsive drivetrain that never left me wanting, especially since those are both things that VAG products are known for. Paddle downshifts were instant and slow speed behavior was extremely refined. It does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, which is good enough for me.
I took the car onto my local back roads after a rainy spell to lightly test out the Quattro system. I never felt it actuating (which is expected behavior) but I know that it was helping me avoid understeer before the limit and allowing all 4 wheels to stay in contact with the pavement (in combination with the all season tires, of course). I was comfortably driving this thing faster on twisties than I ever expected a crossover could manage, and I was actively having fun doing so. Not once did it feel top-heavy, though naturally there were hints of understeer as I approached its (reasonable for public roads) limit, but Quattro and a good chassis do their best to combat that. I can only imagine how much more fun it'd be with the adaptive dampers and performance tires, or in SQ5 form.
On the highway, the ride quality felt connected but not harsh, sort of like a BMW. Since I value a responsive vehicle, it's a tradeoff I can live with. The only issue of note is that it handled certain repeated bumps (expansion joints?) poorly by bouncing like it had blown shocks (it was a rental with 14,000 miles so it's possible that they were, in fact, blown). Somehow it had good body control despite that, though it was probably even better when new before any renters touched it. Apparently the adaptive suspension can entirely compensate for these sorts of roads, so I want to try that one day.
Overall, this car smashed my expectations of how much fun you can have in a crossover. It is, in fact, possible to have all the benefits with the downsides expertly managed. I want to try out a BMW X3 M40i next, because I can only imagine how much better that will be to drive.

Surprisingly, when equipped with equivalent features, the four competitors' prices all fall within a limited band width.

Tested: The 2019 Porsche Macan S is a Well-Balanced Performance SUV
The future is electric, even for Porsche. The Macan will be one of the first vehicles from the brand to go electric; the next generation will be a fully electric series rolling out at the start of the next decade. After driving a preproduction Taycan, we’re not worried about a new model losing its Porsche DNA to electrification. But as much as we enjoy electric car performance, we love this car’s sonorous turbo-six.
Unlike most SUVs, which make compromises in ride and handling, the Macan’s biggest strength is performance. Accurate steering makes life easier, and corners come easy despite the 4,338-pound curb weight. Paired with the optional adaptive air suspension, our Macan S tester glides over uneven surfaces. Even though it sits on large 21-inch wheels, it shields the cabin from road imperfections, smoothing out dips and bumps you’ll find on everyday roads. Not overly firm, it almost calls to mind the buttery smooth ride of the Panamera.
The 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 is equally competent. Packing 348 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, it rockets to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. That’s slightly quicker than a 2018 BMW X3 M40i we tested in 4.8 seconds, as well as a 2018 Audi SQ5 Prestige that hit the mark in 5.0 seconds. Bear in mind these engines have slightly more power and torque than the Macan S. All proved much quicker than a supercharged 2018 Range Rover Velar P380 R-Dynamic SE we tested, which took 5.7 seconds to reach 60 mph.
There’s a certain deliberateness to the Macan S, from its precise steering and smooth seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to its steady braking that exhibits little dive. We managed to stop from 60 mph to a standstill in 107 feet. Compare that to the X3 and SQ5’s 112 feet and the Velar’s 124 feet. Our test team praised the consistent performance from the Porsche’s brakes through multiple runs.
None of the aforementioned competitors could match Porsche in the figure eight, where the mighty Macan achieved a time of 24.8 seconds at an average 0.75 g. Instead, the BMW rounded the bends in 25.9 seconds at 0.72 g while the SQ5 managed 25.7 seconds at 0.73 g. The Velar moseyed through the course in 26.2 seconds at 0.70 g. Testing director Kim Reynolds had good things to say about the figure-eight experience, calling it “sublime, as are all Porsches,” adding that “even this one, albeit with an S in its badge, blends all its dynamics brilliantly.”
The BMW came closer to the Macan in the quarter mile. The Porsche’s time of 13.2 seconds at 103.1 mph wasn’t that far off the BMW’s 13.4 seconds at 103.7 mph or the Audi’s 13.5 seconds at 101.8 mph. The Velar lagged behind a whole second from the Macan, topping out at 97.7 mph.
The Macan S exhibits razor-sharp precision in the city, on the highway, and on the track, but not as much in the parking lot. At very low speeds, the steering becomes heavy and stiff to an uncomfortable point, and you really have to press on the accelerator to get it going. It almost feels like you forgot to disengage the parking brake.
In areas other than performance, the Macan S doesn’t lead the pack. Inside the cabin, you’ll find comfortable leather seats and a responsive touchscreen, but many parts of the dash feel hard and less than premium in our $74,650 tester. If you prefer to use physical buttons instead of a touchscreen as much as possible, you’ll enjoy the button-happy center console. Unfortunately, this setup leaves virtually no space for storing small items. The view from the rearview camera isn’t as clear as we would like, either. Although Apple CarPlay is available, Android Auto is not. Other than this inconvenience, you can get most options you want, but for a price: A base Macan S won’t afford you keyless entry or ignition, nor does it have Apple CarPlay or heated or ventilated seats. One more gripe: Many adults will find the rear seats a bit cramped. If it’s interior luxury and tech you’re after, I’d say take a good look at the SQ5.
In exchange for strong performance, the Macan S takes a hit when it comes to fuel economy. The most recent BMW X3 M40i tops out at 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined, the Macan S only manages 18/23/20 mpg. That’s slightly worse than the SQ5’s 19/24/21 mpg and the Velar’s 18/24/20 mpg.
The Macan was Porsche’s best-selling vehicle last year in the U.S.—and by a large margin. With 23,504 units sold, it was more than twice as popular as the Cayenne, the brand’s second best-seller. In today’s crossover-obsessed market, it may not be the most well-rounded compact luxury SUV, but it excels in what it came to do: perform like a Porsche. For even sharper performance, Porsche is rolling out an updated Macan Turbo with 434 hp. Relish it while you can.

Yet letting the M division shape its magic into the X3 makes a lot of sense because most agree that, unlike some of BMW’s current car and SUV offerings, the X3 has embodied BMW’s core driving dynamics ever since the gen-one vehicle went on sale here in 2004. So yes, take your already well-driving crossover and make it louder, faster, and handle better. And in doing so, become directly competitive with Audi’s SQ5 and Mercedes’ GLC 43.
Included in the M40i’s price is BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control (adjustable ride) and a sport-tuned eight-speed transmission with paddle shifters. Notable M equipment includes better brakes and steering, plus an adaptive suspension. The steering and brakes come standard, but the suspension is a $700 add-on. Default wheel size on the M40i is 19 inches, but this test car has been upgraded to large-and-in-charge 21-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Alenza 001 RFT tires ($1,900).
Additional standard equipment includes a stitched dash, leather sport seats (with a muscular-looking stitching that looks like Batman’s suit), adaptive LED headlights, and a burly body kit that’s unique to the M40i and gives the vehicle a substantial-looking stance while parked on the curb. Unique puddle lights known as the “welcome light carpet” cast a multi–hockey stick design onto the asphalt below the rocker panels, and the same design is also mimicked in the dome lights and HVAC vents inside the cabin.
Additional options include BMW’s Premium package ($3,300), which includes heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and a head-up display. The Executive package ($2,250) includes parking assist, gesture control, an upgraded all-digital instrument panel, and 3-D surround view, which uses onboard cameras to help you avoid rubbing the X3 on any hard, inanimate objects while parking.
Other a la carte items include adaptive cruise control ($1,200), a Harman Kardon stereo system ($875), a wireless charging pad in the center console ($500), front ventilated seats ($350), , Apple CarPlay ($300), and rear-seat window shades ($250). All tallied up, this X3 rings in at $68,670. PARK CITY, Utah — With Ford planning to dump most of its cars and concentrate its business on trucks, SUVs, and the Mustang, fans of Ford’s ST models have to be wondering what will happen next. The Blue Oval has started to provide some answers in the form of the 2019 Ford Edge ST.
On the surface, the Edge ST serves as a replacement for the previous-gen Edge Sport. But the midsize crossover was handed over to the Ford Performance team for a thorough going-over. The ST also employs all-wheel drive as its predecessor did, but it uses a new rear-axle disconnect setup that helps save fuel when AWD isn’t engaged.
A four-mode stability control system Ford calls AdvanceTrac allows the driver to choose from full on, traction control off, sport/track mode, and full off (though even in the latter setting the system will step in to prevent rollover). Performance-oriented options include 21-in wheels with Pirelli P Zero summer tires and a bigger brake package.
Ford invited us up to Park City, Utah, where we got a chance to attack some curvy mountain roads in the 2019 Edge ST. Equipped with the optional summer tires, the Edge displayed impressive levels of grip and body control for an SUV of its size and heft. Push harder and the Edge holds on well, eventually reaching its limits of traction with a slow and steady onset of understeer. Most impressive was the way the body stayed flat in the corners, unlike the standard Edge, which leans like a proverbial schooner in the bends.
Power from the twin-turbo V-6 is good—not knock-your-socks-off good, but more than adequate for a performance-oriented SUV. Ford claims a 0-60 mph time of “under six seconds” (our guess: 5.98). Off-the-line acceleration feels comparable to the 2.0-liter turbocharged four in other Edge models, but where the 2.0T runs out of steam at higher speeds, the V-6 continues to pull strongly.
But Ford’s ‘quick-shifting’ 8-speed automatic transmission the engine is paired with proved to be a disappointment when we flogged it. Ford says when it’s in Sport mode, the tranny will hold shifts longer in the power band, upshift faster, and rev match. We found it slow to shift up and down and it responded to part-throttle power requests as if it had been given a healthy shot of Novocain. Accelerate hard and back off the power, and the transmission would sometimes respond with a delayed upshift that came with a worrying thunk. There are paddle shifters supplied, but the transmission’s Sport program ought to do a better job of paying attention to the driver.
Ford also set up an autocross of sorts to run the Edge ST through. Provided we didn’t do anything dumb, like, say, crank the wheel too hard heading into a turn, (all in the name of evaluating the car, of course, and not because we forgot how sharp the turn was) the Edge ST went pretty much where we pointed it, hustling in a manner that made it easy to forget it’s a bulky crossover.
But—and you knew there was going to be a “but”, didn’t you?—the price you pay for this accomplished handling is a rock-hard ride. Ford confined our test route to relatively smooth pavement, but the second the roads turned rough, the Edge ST’s ride turned rougher, to the point of downright discomfort. It’s the old trade-off that good handling comes at the expense of ride quality. Except that it isn’t really true—just ask any Audi, BMW, or Volkswagen owner.
Perhaps the 21-in wheel and performance tire package were part of the problem. We’re betting the standard-fit 20-in wheels probably wouldn’t help much other than to potentially have a negative impact on the handling, as they come with lesser Hankook all-season tires.
The Edge ST’s aforementioned Sport mode, which is activated by pushing a button on the center of the new rotary shifter, cranks up throttle and transmission response and turns the active noise cancellation system into performance mode (basically amplifying the tastier engine noises and pumping them through the speakers). Turning it off does nothing to relax the ride or the steering that we could discern, which feels unnecessarily heavy when you aren’t charging hard through the curves.
Shame, because there are other things the Edge ST gets right. First and foremost is the look: The blacked-out trim, big wheels, and trapezoidal exhaust tips (functional, by the way, which is more than we can say about those on the Audi SQ5) give it great presence.
Inside, the ST gets unique interior trim to differentiate it from lesser Edges. Unfortunately, nothing’s been done about the control layout other than the addition of the rotary shifter. The infotainment system’s old-school graphics, sparse look-alike buttons on the center stack and plethora of them on the steering wheel lend the cabin a dated feel. It’s an undeserved first impression, because this is a more modern system than it appears; along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it now offers compatibility with Alexa and Waze as well as a 4G LTE WiFi hot spot.
Like other 2019 Edge models, the ST gets a standard-fit safety suite Ford calls Co-Pilot 360, which includes collision warning with automatic braking, blind-spot warning, a backup camera, a lane-keeping system and automatic high beams. But features that actually make it work as a copilot—adaptive cruise control and lane centering—are optional extras. We sampled all the systems in the ST we drove and found they worked as intended.
The Edge ST even comes with a standard-fit towing package, though its 3,500 lb capacity is about 2,500 lbs less than the BMW X5 xDrive50i.
But the V-8-powered X5 will set you back nearly $77,000 if you can find one without options (good luck with that). The Audi SQ5 starts at $55,295, which just happens to be a mere $290 more than an Edge ST with all of the bells and whistles. The cheapest version of the Ford Edge ST is priced at $43,350, only a couple grand more than you’d pay for an entry-level Q5. That’s some good ol’ American value from this Canadian-built crossover.
As far as the Edge ST’s role as the new face of Ford Performance, a couple of the Ford staffers we spoke with see the Edge ST as the next logical step for a Focus ST buyer who has started a family. Trading in an easily upgradable, manual-transmission equipped Focus or Fiesta ST for big turn-key SUV, even another Ford with an ST badge, seems a brook too broad for leaping. The about-to-expire ST cars appeal to very specific buyers for very specific reasons, and we don’t think the Mustang (or the Edge ST, for that matter) hits those criteria.
We see the Edge ST targeting an older and wealthier buyer, one looking for strong performance and an edgier look with an American badge. But would such a buyer be willing to put up with the Edge ST’s harsh ride? If they live back East, where winters wreak havoc with pavement, we can’t see that happening, either.
It’s interesting that Ford has dropped the Edge Sport for 2019. It seems as though a vehicle with the attractive styling of the Edge ST, the strong performance of the EcoBoost V-6, and the softer ride and easier steering of the standard Edge would make sense. Several manufacturers have done well with vehicles that look sporty and ride comfortably, we’re sure Ford would as well.
Meanwhile, if the Edge is the new face of ST, then we think Ford will be looking for new faces among its buyers. Whether they will find them or not remains to be seen.

First Drive: 2019 Ford Edge ST
PARK CITY, Utah — With Ford planning to dump most of its cars and concentrate its business on trucks, SUVs, and the Mustang, fans of Ford’s ST models have to be wondering what will happen next. The Blue Oval has started to provide some answers in the form of the 2019 Ford Edge ST.
On the surface, the Edge ST serves as a replacement for the previous-gen Edge Sport. But the midsize crossover was handed over to the Ford Performance team for a thorough going-over. And gone over it they have, stiffening the springs, beefing up the brakes, and enhancing the engine. The 2.7 liter twin-turbo V-6 EcoBoost now puts out 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, up 20 hp and 30 lb-ft from the 2018 Edge Sport. The ST also employs all-wheel drive as its predecessor did, but it uses a new rear-axle disconnect setup that helps save fuel when AWD isn’t engaged.
A four-mode stability control system Ford calls AdvanceTrac allows the driver to choose from full on, traction control off, sport/track mode, and full off (though even in the latter setting the system will step in to prevent rollover). Performance-oriented options include 21-in wheels with Pirelli P Zero summer tires and a bigger brake package.
Ford invited us up to Park City, Utah, where we got a chance to attack some curvy mountain roads in the 2019 Edge ST. Equipped with the optional summer tires, the Edge displayed impressive levels of grip and body control for an SUV of its size and heft. Push harder and the Edge holds on well, eventually reaching its limits of traction with a slow and steady onset of understeer. Most impressive was the way the body stayed flat in the corners, unlike the standard Edge, which leans like a proverbial schooner in the bends.
Power from the twin-turbo V-6 is good—not knock-your-socks-off good, but more than adequate for a performance-oriented SUV. Ford claims a 0-60 mph time of “under six seconds” (our guess: 5.98). Off-the-line acceleration feels comparable to the 2.0-liter turbocharged four in other Edge models, but where the 2.0T runs out of steam at higher speeds, the V-6 continues to pull strongly.
But Ford’s ‘quick-shifting’ 8-speed automatic transmission the engine is paired with proved to be a disappointment when we flogged it. Ford says when it’s in Sport mode, the tranny will hold shifts longer in the power band, upshift faster, and rev match. We found it slow to shift up and down and it responded to part-throttle power requests as if it had been given a healthy shot of Novocain. Accelerate hard and back off the power, and the transmission would sometimes respond with a delayed upshift that came with a worrying thunk. There are paddle shifters supplied, but the transmission’s Sport program ought to do a better job of paying attention to the driver.
Ford also set up an autocross of sorts to run the Edge ST through. Provided we didn’t do anything dumb, like, say, crank the wheel too hard heading into a turn, (all in the name of evaluating the car, of course, and not because we forgot how sharp the turn was) the Edge ST went pretty much where we pointed it, hustling in a manner that made it easy to forget it’s a bulky crossover.
But—and you knew there was going to be a “but”, didn’t you?—the price you pay for this accomplished handling is a rock-hard ride. Ford confined our test route to relatively smooth pavement, but the second the roads turned rough, the Edge ST’s ride turned rougher, to the point of downright discomfort. It’s the old trade-off that good handling comes at the expense of ride quality. Except that it isn’t really true—just ask any Audi, BMW, or Volkswagen owner.
Perhaps the 21-in wheel and performance tire package were part of the problem. We’re betting the standard-fit 20-in wheels probably wouldn’t help much other than to potentially have a negative impact on the handling, as they come with lesser Hankook all-season tires.
The Edge ST’s aforementioned Sport mode, which is activated by pushing a button on the center of the new rotary shifter, cranks up throttle and transmission response and turns the active noise cancellation system into performance mode (basically amplifying the tastier engine noises and pumping them through the speakers). Turning it off does nothing to relax the ride or the steering that we could discern, which feels unnecessarily heavy when you aren’t charging hard through the curves.
Shame, because there are other things the Edge ST gets right. First and foremost is the look: The blacked-out trim, big wheels, and trapezoidal exhaust tips (functional, by the way, which is more than we can say about those on the Audi SQ5) give it great presence.
Inside, the ST gets unique interior trim to differentiate it from lesser Edges. Unfortunately, nothing’s been done about the control layout other than the addition of the rotary shifter. The infotainment system’s old-school graphics, sparse look-alike buttons on the center stack and plethora of them on the steering wheel lend the cabin a dated feel. It’s an undeserved first impression, because this is a more modern system than it appears; along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it now offers compatibility with Alexa and Waze as well as a 4G LTE WiFi hot spot.
Like other 2019 Edge models, the ST gets a standard-fit safety suite Ford calls Co-Pilot 360, which includes collision warning with automatic braking, blind-spot warning, a backup camera, a lane-keeping system and automatic high beams. But features that actually make it work as a copilot—adaptive cruise control and lane centering—are optional extras. We sampled all the systems in the ST we drove and found they worked as intended.
The Edge ST even comes with a standard-fit towing package, though its 3,500 lb capacity is about 2,500 lbs less than the BMW X5 xDrive50i.
But the V-8-powered X5 will set you back nearly $77,000 if you can find one without options (good luck with that). The Audi SQ5 starts at $55,295, which just happens to be a mere $290 more than an Edge ST with all of the bells and whistles. The cheapest version of the Ford Edge ST is priced at $43,350, only a couple grand more than you’d pay for an entry-level Q5. That’s some good ol’ American value from this Canadian-built crossover.
As far as the Edge ST’s role as the new face of Ford Performance, a couple of the Ford staffers we spoke with see the Edge ST as the next logical step for a Focus ST buyer who has started a family. Trading in an easily upgradable, manual-transmission equipped Focus or Fiesta ST for big turn-key SUV, even another Ford with an ST badge, seems a brook too broad for leaping. (An Escape ST—now there’s something they may consider, something Ford no doubt is as well.)
