Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy NOW OPEN
The Petersen Automotive Museum has opened a new exhibit, featuring over 40 Hollywood vehicles from cult classic films and video games. “Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy,” which opened May 5, 2019 in the Mullin Family Grand Salon, is the largest museum exhibition of sci-fi vehicles in the world. The exhibit was produced in collaboration with Comic-Con Museum, with additional support provided by Audi, Microsoft and Classic Cars.com.
Along with iconic automobiles, the exhibit showcases a selection of concept artwork, props and costumes to explore and analyze the ways in which the speculative fiction genre pushes the boundaries of human imagination. Series represented in the display span from the niches of speculative fiction with emphasis on dystopian future films such as “Back to the Future”, “Blade Runner,” “Ghost in the Shell,” “Transformers” and “I, Robot”.
Key vehicles on display include the 2018 Lexus LS 500 F Sport from “Black Panther,” Warthog from “Halo,” the 2035 Audi RSQ from “I Robot,” the time machine from “Back to the Future”, the Weyland Industries RT01 Group Transport from “Prometheus,” the 2008 Audi R8 from “Iron Man,” Bumblebee from the “Transformers” series, the GM Ultralight from “Demolition Man,” Batmobiles, and more. "Being in the heart of the entertainment industry in Hollywood and Los Angeles, we’re thrilled to be able to display these cinematic icons, “said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “When you see these pieces of cinematic history in person it truly offers a different perspective than seeing them on the big screen. It is truly like nothing else we have done here at the Petersen.”
The exhibit also features a Microsoft HoloLens experience called “Worlds Reimagined.” The mixed reality experience provides guests with the opportunity to try this immersive technology, and see the Warthog from “Halo” and the “Back to the Future” time machine in a whole new way. To help kick off the exhibit, the Petersen hosted a panel discussion featuring some of the most celebrated film producers, movie car designers and coordinators of the past 30+ decades including Bob Gale, Harald Belker, Josh Hancock, George Hull, Dennis McCarthy, and Michael Scheffe. The panel, which was moderated by film critic Scott Mantz, covered the backstory of some of film’s most iconic vehicles, discussed how Hollywood’s “cars of the future” are created and what they think is next. The Petersen also held an opening reception on the evening of May 4 with live entertainment, gourmet appetizers and cocktails.
“Hollywood Dream Machines” will run through March 15, 2020. To purchase tickets to the exhibit opening reception, please visit http://www.petersen.org/hollywood. For more information about the Petersen Automotive Museum, please visit www.Petersen.org.

Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR First Look: Like Avatar Movie, It Isn’t Really About Blue People
Concept cars and films go oh so well together, don’t they? The R8-previewing Audi RSQ in I, Robot comes to mind, as does Ironman’s Acura NSX Roadster in The Avengers, or Bond’s stunning Aston Martin DB10 in 2015’s Spectre. Mercedes is taking things a step further with the Vision AVTR which isn’t in a movie but is inextricably linked to the movies, specifically, James Cameron’s Avatar films. You know, the CGI-heavy ones with the blue alien people in them.
The AVTR concept isn’t blue, but it is the product of a relationship between Mercedes and the Avatar Series announced at the keynote presentation at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by the luxury automaker’s honcho, Ola Källenius. (Källenius even called Cameron “Jim” instead of James—pretty cute.) Mercedes hitched its wagon to Cameron’s and, by extension, the box-office-crushing Avatar franchise because the movies touch on themes of sustainability, environmental preservation, and a connection between human and machine—the exact themes designers toyed with when dreaming up the AVTR concept. Mercedes named the concept Vision AVTR, not Vision Avatar, because apparently Cameron owns the word and, we assume, didn’t feel like sharing it. Plus, smashed-up words bereft of nonessential consonants and vowels are so in these days.
Anyway, the concept looks not years into the future, but decades into the future. The word “future” appears a staggering 48 times in the AVTR’s press release, which might seem absurd until you consider just how forward-thinking the car really is. There is no steering wheel. You control the car instead via a Mercedes-branded nub in the center console that resembles the little red rubber joystick on Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops. Mercedes claims this furthers the AVTR’s theme of natural connection, and that it was inspired by the Avatar movies’ Na’vi people (the blue aliens) and the way they could literally plug into their surroundings using their ponytails.
Källenius even goes so far as to declare the concept car is less of a machine and more of a living organism in its own right. There are 33 scaley “bionic flaps” on the rear end that react to the environment like hairs standing up on the back of an animal’s neck. They twitched the entire time the car spent on stage at CES. The concave, reclined seats are inspired by the giant leaf hammocks in which the Na’vi people sleep. Even the battery that powers the all-wheel-drive, electric AVTR uses a compostable organic cell chemistry; it delivers over 400 miles of range.
Instead of a traditional dashboard or gauge cluster, in the AVTR, critical information is projected onto a T-shaped surface that extends from the center console to the dash via a projector embedded in the headliner. There’s no recognizable user interface either—stuff is projected onto the driver’s raised hand and manipulated and controlled by gestures. Källenius said that this intuitive gesture control is less like learning sign language (ahem, BMW) and more like communicating with something that knows what you want.
Oh, and don’t think we were going to skip talking about those wheels! They’re semi-spherical omnidirectional rollers—as if Benz would consider mere wheels—with a tiny contact patch to minimize the car’s impact on its surroundings. Those rollers also enable the AVTR to crawl around in odd directions like a crab. It’s pretty wacky.
Mercedes is leaning heavily into the sustainability theme, not just with the materials used in the AVTR (which include vegan Dinamica leather and wood floors from sustainably sourced, fast-growing palm stems), but allegedly with its whole business moving forward. Källenius’s “Ambition 2039” plan for Mercedes-Benz aims to have a fully sustainable, closed-loop, carbon-neutral fleet of vehicles by the end of the next decade, and extend that philosophy all the way down the production line. So, for as ambitious as the AVTR concept may be, the ethos and thinking it represents might be even more so. Can’t hurt, then, to kick it off with a car named after one of the highest-grossing films of all time, huh?

8 Of the foremost Iconic Cars From the films
Throughout the years, the large screen has featured a number of the foremost iconic cars within the industry, and in many cases, the actors are upstaged by the particular cars! Here are eight of the simplest movie cars. Lexus 2054 – Minority
Report Lexus 2054 – Minority Report
Lexus 2054 was a beautifully designed concept car for the 2002 Spielberg film, Minority Report. The Lexus 2054 came with biometric security systems and a 100% crash-proof structure! Director Spielberg, a Lexus driver, approached the posh car maker to style a futuristic model that suits the year 2054. It played an important role in Tom Cruise’s famous action sequences.
Audi RSQ – iRobot
The Audi RSQ was an ideal car for the 2004 sci-fi hit iRobot. Although the car was never released, Audi does have an identical electric sports car and therefore the design complements its typical automobile design. Director Alex Proyas came up with ideas for a few of the revolutionary features that the car has, including spheres rather than conventional wheels.
DeLorean – Back to the Future
The DeLorean DMC-12 appeared within the 1985 sci-fi classic, Back to the longer term. to the present day, it remains the foremost instantly recognizable time-machine of all time. The car featured within the entire trilogy became emblematic of the rear to the long term franchise. The official Back to the longer term DeLorean is at the Petersen Automobile Museum. The classic sports car features a loyal following and although the corporate not manufactures new models the DMC-12 was only in production for 2 years – there are quite 6,000 units alive.
Bumblebee – Transformers
bumblebee was a robot superhero within the Transformers movie that was ready to morph into a mess of vehicles at will. Its hottest transformation though was turning into a bright yellow Chevrolet Camaro. The car has been modified to incorporate matte carbon fiber parts, including a custom rear wing and side skirts.
Taxi – Fifth Element
Although much of the mise-en-scene of the Fifth Element is nearly unrecognizable, one can remember Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) driving a particular yellow taxi throughout. When the mysterious Leeloo falls into his cab, the 2 combined forces to guard Earth against an impending attack. At the time of its release, the movie was the foremost expensive film shot in Europe.
Spinner Car – Blade Runner
The Spinner Car from Blade Runner is one of the foremost famous flying cars in any movie. It inspired an entire host of other airborne vehicles in movies, like Star Wars Episode 1 & 2 and therefore the Fifth Element. Featured within the movie’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, the Spinner Car can work both ashore and air. It can begin vertically, cruise with reaction propulsion, and hover.
Lexus LC500 – Black Panther
The Lexus LC500 started as a prototype. Then, it ended up going into production after rave reviews about its unique futuristic design. The car was featured in one of the foremost exciting scenes of the Black Panther movie and was a worthy car for the main character, King T’Challa. It matched his quick cat-like reflexes. To celebrate the collaboration with Marvel, Lexus created an ingenious graphic novel launched at Comic-Con.
Toyota Supra – The Fast & the Furious
The 1994 Toyota Supra first appeared within the original Fast & the Furious film as a rusted car from a junkyard. It underwent restoration and modification to be even faster than a Ferrari during a street race! The technical advisor of the film owned the Supra. to form it fit the movie, the car underwent many modifications including an engine swap, Coilover suspension, and custom graphics. The car was eventually sold in 2015 for a cool $185,000 at the Mecum Auctions event in Indianapolis.

The Audi RSQ E-Tron Concept is back in 'Spies in Disguise' There’s a new trend in super-spy transportation: electric power. Bond is set to drive the Aston Martin Rapide E in the upcoming franchise film, and over in the animated world, Audi is gearing up its first pixelated concept car, which is also electric. The Audi RSQ E-Tron concept is set to debut in the upcoming animated movie Spies in Disguise. The short video teaser titled “Lunch Break” features Lance Sterling (with the voice and goatee of Will Smith) acting all cool, like only a super-spy can in the passenger seat of the Audi RSQ E-Tron concept, while the high-strung nerdy weapons specialist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) freaks out beside him. There’s a broken bridge, which the Audi jumps; a helicopter, which the Audi outruns on the streets with its Audi on Demand Performance Package Power Boost; and a targeted missile, which the Audi outmaneuvers in the subway system. As the car careens around the city, we get a glimpse of a holographic cluster, an infotainment centre on the windshield and a digital dash running the width of the car. And when the spot ends, we see Beckett behind the wheel “living his best life,” unaware that autopilot is on. Presumably, they also head to a drive-thru after this is all over — because this was their lunch break, and spies gotta eat. Spies in Disguise will arrive in theatres on December 25,
