Skoda set to play part in India green mobility space, mulls EV launch

Czech carmaker Skoda is mulling to drive in electric vehicles in the Indian market as it expects the green mobility segment to pick up significantly in the country over the next few years, according to a senior company official.

The automaker, which is witnessing a turnaround in its domestic business, however, has no plans to get into the CNG space in the immediate future.

"We will have to (get into the EV segment) because we plan a long term future in India," Skoda Auto India Brand Director Zac Hollis told PTI when asked if the company is looking to launch electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.

"We estimate that by 2030, 25-30 per cent of the market would be electric cars and we need to make sure that we play our part, so we will bring EVs to the market," he added.

Hollis noted that group firms like Audi and Porsche have already started to launch high-end electric vehicles in the Indian market.

"The electric car launches from the group enable us to see how the technology is working in the Indian road conditions and climate and also it will help us learn from the dealer aspect as well," he started.

When asked about the launch timelines, Hollis said: "Can't give a timeline as it is still under discussion."

On the introduction of CNG models, he stated: "We have no short term plans for CNG...the problem is that with our platform, technology and TSI engines we cannot be competitive and a CNG car is predominantly at a lower end of the market.

"I think that is the issue we need to look at.. so no plans in the short term but we will keep reviewing it."

Many domestic carmakers are expanding their CNG product lineup in the country amid an increase in fuel prices and a drop in diesel car sales. Skoda, which now sells models like Kushaq, Slavia, Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq in the Indian market, is witnessing a turnaround in its business.

The carmaker, which sold close to 24,000 units last year in the domestic market, aims to treble its volume this year.

"We are receiving a robust response. The turnaround is clearly happening. We increased the volume last year by 140 per cent, we intend to treble our volumes this year from 2021," Hollis said.

He noted that the company has taken various measures in the last few years to strengthen its presence and model range in the country.

"We have worked in the last three years to expand the dealer network to ensure that we are represented across regions, particularly in smaller towns. We have also increased our footprint in metro cities," Hollis said.

The company has expanded its sales network from 65 to 153 as of date and it will touch the 180 mark before the end of the year, he added. The company has also worked on enhancing customer satisfaction, Hollis said.

"People said you make great cars but you are expensive to own, so the thing about Kushaq and Slavia is that they are 95 per cent localised. It now reflects in our spare part costs because we are not importing parts. So the cost of ownership is now much much lower," he stated.

"So we have definitely become much more affordable as a brand. The cost of ownership of Slavia is the best in the segment, I guess we have cracked that..we have also worked a lot on customer satisfaction and this is also working. The complaints in the last two years have gone down by about 60 per cent," Hollis noted.

Skoda is responsible for pressing ahead with the India 2.0 project on behalf of Volkswagen Group since June 2018.

"So definitely, we have moved the brand on and we are ready for growth as the foundation is there, the product is there, the organisation is ready," Hollis said.

When asked about new product launches, he noted that the company has localised the platform and new body styles could be developed on the same.

"Small SUVs are also possible, everything is being looked at," Hollis said.

On possibilities of launching a small car, he said: "We will work with the platform that we have and that could also be used for a sub-four-meter car..everything is being looked at because local production is there," On production, he said the company is commencing third shift at its manufacturing plant and would soon be able to reach full capacity utilisation.

Legal requirements

According the Highway Code, Rule 57 states that animals in vehicles must be restrained in such a way that they cannot cause a distraction to the driver or injure themselves if the vehicle stops suddenly at speed. It goes on to state that seat belt harnesses, pet carriers, dog cages, dividers and bars are the best way of achieving suitable restraint.

The long flat floor is generous to say the least, and the low boot sill will allow even the littlest hobo to jump up on its own legs into the vehicle.

Ford S-Max

One of the Ford family’s largest vehicles and a great option for couples with kids. You get 7 big seats and even with a bum popped on each one there’s still 285 litres in the back for a large woofer or two small sub woofers – and yes, we’re not talking about speakers. More dogs than kids? No problem simply fold down two seats and increase the space to 700 litres or get rid of the seating in the back for over 2000 litres. Perfect for a whole husky pack. BMW 5 Series Touring

Perfect for taking out the pedigrees to the country home estate. It’s a bit more on the wallet than others on our list, but you will feel like a lord or lady riding out with the hounds in this classy, refined and well equipped motor that’s a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Believe it or not, the 2.0 diesel that forms the heartbeat of the 520d is powerful and cheap to run. And if you want great fuel economy for those UK based holidays with the doggy then the 150hp diesel is the best bet.

What is it?

The grand daddy of Volvo’s SUV range.

The seven-seat XC90 is also the oldest of its SUVs, dating back to 2002 and now in its second generation.

The current shape was introduced in 2014 and is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor — at 4950mm in length, with a wheelbase of 2984mm.

The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment and can be slid backwards or forwards to create more legroom for passengers in the third row or to increase luggage space.

The third row which packs flat  is suitable for teenagers and small children.

A child booster cushion is integrated into the second row centre seat.

What’s it cost?

Prices start from $93,900 plus on roads for the diesel 2.0-litre Momentum.

Our 2.0-litre twin charged petrol T6 R-Design is priced from $104,900, but that’s not where the range stops.

There’s also the T8 hybrid, priced from $122,900, $124,900 or a rarefied $174,200 — all figures before on roads.

Our test vehicle had a few options fitted including the Premium Pack, which brings the final figure to $114,800 plus on roads.

The Premium Pack priced at $8000 includes sunblinds for the rear side doors, Bowers & Wilkins audio, heated rear seats, active chassis with rear air suspension, and tailored dashboard and door top panels with colour-coordinated seams.

Metallic paint adds another $1900.

The dash with its dominant, vertically mounted 9.0-inch touchscreen computer is familiar from the smaller XC40 and XC60 models.

The Bowers & Wilkins system is a real work of art, with 1400 watts of power and 19 speakers.

In fact, the 19th speaker, the subwoofer, uses the car body itself, turning the entire interior of the car into a giant speaker.

Being a Volvo the XC90 comes choc full of safety equipment too, including active cruise with auto emergency braking and receives a maximum five star rating for safety.

When linked to your mobile phone, Volvo On Call automatically alerts emergency services in the event of an accident.

What’s it go like?

The interior sets a benchmark for comfort and ergonomics, with oodles of room and large easy to use controls.

In our test vehicle it was trimmed in an attractive combination of greys and blacks, with carbon fibre look inserts and metal speaker grilles.

Loaded with technology the seven-seat wagon features a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine that is both turbo- and supercharged.

The unusual combo produces 235kW of power and 400Nm of torque, the latter from 2200 to 5400 revs.

The supercharger is designed to boost bottom end performance and combines with the turbocharger to deliver a strong, smooth throttle response across the entire rev range.

VW offered a similar twin-charged setup with the Golf for a short period, longer with the Golf Convertible which sat on an older platform.

The twin charged engine in the XC90 is paired with an 8-speed auto, with drive to all four wheels as required, and does the dash from 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds — despite a 2 tonne plus weight penalty.

Drive modes include Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, and Off Road, but with a space saver spare, 20 inch rims and expensive low profile Continentals — few people are likely to actually take the car off road.

Gear change paddles are provided, but to be honest we did not bother with them — with plenty of torque the need just wasn’t there.

The steering is light and perhaps a touch too sensitive, but the lane keeping assistance technology which steers the car back into its lane is among the best and least intrusive that we’ve tested.

Speed can be displayed digitally and cameras are employed to keep an eye on the current speed limit, with information available either in the dash or projected onto the lower windscreen via head-up display.

The system also warns of school zones and fixed speed cameras, although we still haven’t worked out how to get audible warnings.

The only problem with the head-up display is that it is almost invisible with polarised sunglasses.

With fuel consumption rated at 8.5L/100km, we were getting 10.7L100km from the 71-litre tank after some 430km of mixed driving.

Arbitration Panel decided in our favor i.e. I am not at fault hence need not pay the damages. Total loss amount listed by other party was $800. My car did not have any damage worth repairing. (Also, I am lazy and passive enough to not pursue too hard for a minor dent.) After arbitration settlement other person filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. I was pretty sure that a judge cant do anything after arbitration. To my surprise judge assessed that out of $800 - $250 was the deductible paid by other person. Prior Arbitration did not include that amount hence he can adjudicate on this $250. He adjudicated against me for $250 + legal fee. Judge also told me that I need not worry about this money as my insurance will pay for it. (Most ridiculous judge and judgment I have ever seen, but thats a separate matter) I called up my insurance company. They are willing to pay this amount. My question is  will making them pay increase my insurance premium. I have a pretty clean record with no at-fault accidents. I pay about $1000 per year for two cars in WA state. Now at the end of this year my car has depreciated to 1500.00. So, I am 18, and yesterday my cousin was planned to come in from the UK at the Sky Harbor Airport in, Arizona. It was dark and raining. I just came off the bay bridge in SF and am positive I was driving below 40 on the bridge and between 40-60 when I got off the bridge. The cop was on 80E past fremont exit. I bought insurance for my truck. after 3 months of paying my agent i noticed that my financing bank had added 1300 dollars to my loan as a collateral insurance because they did not have proof of my insurance. I went back to my agent and they explained that they forgot to send the payment for 3 months to the main insurance company and that is why it appeared to my bank that I did not have insurance. My insurance agent told me they were gonna do a re-installment and that they were going to give me proof that i had insurance for those 3 months so i could take it to my bank so they could remove the 1300 from the loan. It's been about 10 months and my insurance agent has not given me any proof of my policy so the bank is still charging me for those 3 months. (about 400 per month since im 20). my agent does not want to refund the money for those 3 months, and they do not want to give me a proof of policy. I do have proof of paying them for those 3 months since I payed with a check that they cashed. I want them to give me proof of insurance for those 3 months or to pay 1300 to my loan because they are charging it due to their fault since they forgot to send my payment. Can I do a civil law suit for those 1300. I have proof of my payment for those 3 months. I also have my policy number but it says it's cancelled due to non payment so bank will not accept that as insurance. right after those 3 months I opened a new policy with them and ive had it for 8 months and ive always payed on time. I recently noticed that when they opened the new policy they inputed my date of birth as if i was 40 years old instead of 20. I do not know if they did a mistake or if they did that on purpose to give me a better price. The thing is that all these 8 months I've been paying i was actually never covered since my date of birth was way wrong. Only my name was correct but I talked directly to the insurance and not my agent and they explained to me that if i would have crashed it wouldnt have covered me since they do not have the correct date of birth. I just fixed that directly with the agent and now they have the correct date of birth so the insurance price went up since im only 20. I dont mind about that. I just think it's unfair that i paid for almost a year and that i was actually never covered because they did a mistake on my information. Plus they caused the bank to charge me.. So i just feel like if all this has been a big scam since i paid so much and did not have insurance. Can I sue them to get my money back or at least pay the bank what the bank is charging me for not having insurance.. like i said i have all the recepits of all payments ive done and i also have a copy of the policy where my information is not accurate and how i was paying without being covered.
