Employee Spotlight Nicole Andre

We're pleased to feature Nicole Andre in this edition of Flexible Pack's Employee Spotlight. We had the pleasure of sitting down with her recently. It was great diving in to learn more about Nicole both professionally and personally.

Tell Us About Yourself

Nicole grew up in Walpole, MA and graduated from the University of Massachusetts (Dartmouth) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. Currently, Nicole and her husband of just over a month, live in North Attleboro, MA with their two cats, Hope and Bindi who are blind.

Nicole and her husband Nick wed in September after postponing the event three times due to the pandemic. They decided to move forward with an intimate, socially distanced ceremony and look forward to a reception next summer with more of their family and friends. The couple met about 8 years ago when they were both Resident Adviser's (RA's) at UMass. They have been together for about 5 years. Nick works in Cyber Security and is a member of the National Guard. Thank you for your service Nick!

What is your role at Flexible Pack?

Nicole is the Quality and Compliance Manager. She has been with the Company just under two years.  A big component of her role is root cause analysis. Nicole said it's exciting because essentially she's putting puzzle pieces together to create a full picture. She calls herself "a professional problem solver" and says this is her favorite part of the job. She loves being an integral part of process improvement and implementing best practices based on internal data and trends. Nicole's work is very much behind the scenes at Flexible Pack. However, it's important that we note that it is a key position that requires attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to figuring things out.

What Is Your Proudest Moment at Flexible Pack?

Nicole is currently spearheading a project that involves a completely separate workflow from the normal day-to-day operations. Everything is new from the employees, to the equipment and the processes. The project has been a large focus of Nicole's time for about 5 months and it will continue to require her attention for months to come. Nicole's excitement around the success of the project was unmistakable - even behind her face mask - and we look forward to watching that success continue!

What Do You Enjoy Doing Outside of Work?

"I love artsy stuff". Nicole's BFA's is in design and she minored in drawing. She said that she is forever drawing whether that's doodling or creating portraits, and she clearly has a huge talent as evidenced by the images she shared. It's been a lifelong admiration of hers. Nicole is also passionate about something we learned is called, scratchboard. In its most simplistic form, Nicole explained that she uses scratch marks to create really beautiful, intricate pieces. She provided us an example of scratchboard in her seashell piece.

When we probed a little further, Nicole admitted that she has another passion - playing Animal Crossing. She went on to say that it's lame, but we disagree. Of all the guilty pleasures, playing 45 minutes of Nintendo a day is hardly something to be embarrassed about!

What Is Your Personal Mantra?

"You are where you are supposed to be". Nicole shared that her mom has always reminded her of this..."take a step back, breathe, you are where you need to be, you just need to work through it".  It's so clear that Nicole's mom is a huge part of her life, during our chat she said, "I love my mom". 

We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Nicole a little more. We're so grateful for her time and Flexible Pack is so fortunate to have an employee like her. Keep up the great work Nicole!

National Culinary Arts Month Educator Highlight- Leigh Howlett

We are continuing to celebrate Culinary Arts Month with another feature on one of our ProStart Program Educators. Our program wouldn’t be possible without the culinary skills and passion for food that our educators have, and we can’t be thankful enough for them! 

About

Leigh Howlett has been teaching the ProStart Program at Taunton High School in Massachusetts for five and a half years. Prior to teaching, Leigh graduated high school from Attleboro Vocational Technical High School with a concentration in Culinary Arts. She continued her education at The Culinary Institute of America and finally finished her Bachelor’s Degree at Johnson & Wales University with a BA in Foodservice Education. After all of her education, she worked and studied with mentors such as Russell Morin of Russell Morin’s Catering & Events, Chris Spinazzola of the Spinazzola Foundation, and Guy Abelson of Café in the Barn.

After such an extensive education, Leigh looks back on her Culinary Arts education and career by saying that the relationships she built with employers, employees, and guests are the lifeline of her career. She says they are friends she can call upon for absolutely EVERYTHING! 

Leigh’s Classroom

In Leigh’s classroom she teaches her students a lesson that she learned early on and still uses, Mise En Place, or “everything is in it’s place”. She even has it tattooed on her foot as a daily reminder to plan and be prepared! She says, “A lesson is easier to teach... A student is better prepared to learn!” One of her favorite concepts to teach is restaurant management. Leigh has her students participate in food truck wars to learn the skills of restaurant management. 

Advice

Leigh left us with a bit of advice for upcoming and aspiring chefs in the culinary world. She says, “Be humble, you have a lot to learn ahead of you.” Leigh continues with, “we are lucky to be in a field with endless opportunities, students should take a moment to savor each of those opportunities and learn from each and every moment.” What great advice that is! Thank you Leigh for all your contributions to our program and the culinary world!

From the Mound to the Circle

Brett Cloutier’s whole life was about baseball. If there was a league he could play in, he would. Travel ball, little league, AAU, and even wiffleball if that was the only option. With his high velocity fastball and whopping curveball, the righty was someone any team would want on the mound. But, as Cloutier was prepared to lace up the cleats one last time for the North Attleboro Rocketeers his senior season, he faced quite the dilemma. After throwing winter shotput for the last two years, colleges took notice. A future in the shot circle seemed real for Cloutier beyond high school, but he would have to give his first love: baseball. As colleges came calling, Cloutier retired the jersey for his vest and committed to his new sport.

What happened next? A dominant spring season – which included a top performance in the Hockomock league championship and a state qualifier – ended with an intriguing phone call from Bryant University. Cloutier had the chance to throw Division 1 shot put for Bryant – located just 20 minutes down the road from his home town. After four years at Bryant, Cloutier – who stands at 5-foot-10 - has battled through injuries and the pandemic, but has etched his name into Bryant’s record book, ranking second all-time at Bryant in both indoor and outdoor shot put.

How hard was it to move on from baseball?

It was one of the toughest decisions of my life. Baseball was always my favorite sport in the world and I played it my entire life. Ditching that for a sport I just picked up a year earlier wasn’t easy, but one that I thought would be best for me.

What was the final decision that made you throw shot put instead?

I had a strong junior season in the winter – which was my first time throwing shot – and realized this might be something I can do beyond just high school. I’ve always loved sports so having the possibility to continue to be a student athlete in college was a real sticking point with me. After talking it over several times with my coach and seeing how schools were actually interested – that was sort of the tipping point.

What originally got you into shot put your junior year?

I had a few friends on the team that said I should give it a try and said I’d be good at it. I talked to the coach and he was interested due to my size and strength and said I’d be a good fit and potentially the school’s No. 1 shot-putter. So, I figured I’d just give it a try to try really and it turned out to be an awesome experience and I had a lot of success in the circle. I then went on to play baseball my junior year in the spring but went back to shot in both the winter and spring obviously, my senior year.

How has the experience been at Bryant and what made you commit there?

The experience has been great, honestly. Not only have a made a lot of strong personal connections with kids in the program but also throwing in both indoor and outdoor. I’ve been able to up my distance every year and rank second at Bryant in shot put for both indoor and outdoor. It was tough last year with Covid not having an outdoor season - and also ruining our spring trip to Myrtle Beach – but the experience overall has been great. As for committing there, it was the best Division 1 offer I got – which meant a lot to me – and how close it was from home was an extra bonus.

What is your best accomplishment throwing the shot?

I’d say growing personally each and every year has been big for me – as well as just improving my overall form. Looking back at my high school highlights and film and I just laugh at how bad it was. I really can straight up see the improvements I’ve taken over the last four years and my numbers show it. Getting in the Bryant’s record book was also a big accomplishment and one that I will always be able to look at and get a sense of pride from my hard work.

What is a shot-put routine like?

It’s a lot like other sports where it looks easy but there are a lot of little things that go into it. Stuff like holding the ball in your finger base instead of your palm, holding the shot under your neck and then a lot of footwork on the delivery and glide at the end. It takes a lot of work to master the right technique and the technique really makes a different on how far your throw goes.

Is there any difference between high school and college?

In the delivery, no – other than a lot more coaching and adjustments being made to be the best you can be. In shot put in general, the ball is heavy in college. We use a 12-pound ball in high school and it gets upped to 16 pounds at the collegiate level.

What is the typical shot put workout/routine?

It’s a lot of weight lifting: dead lifting, squatting, bench press the usual power lifting stuff. Weight training is really important to develop both speed and power. We also have to do some cardio with the runners which stinks but does help overall in the long run.

Have you thrown anything else besides the shot at any point?

I’ve thrown both the hammer and the discuss but the shot is definitely my favorite and best. I only throw the other two in outdoor season and set personal bests in them my sophomore year but unfortunately with Covid we couldn’t have outdoor season last year.

How else did the Covid-19 pandemic impact you?

It was tough not having a season and staring up again this year was tough to get back in the swing of things. But, honestly, the pandemic was somewhat helpful cause it allowed me to get my knee surgery that I needed for a while. I completed almost my entire winter season with a small tear in my meniscus and it definitely affected me. I was finally able to have my surgery and completely heal up. It only took about two-three weeks but you never have that time off in the season unless you want to miss meets.

After your surgery, what did you do to stay in shape during the pandemic?

I did have to rehab my knee at first, so a lot of body weight work. It was tough during the pandemic cause I couldn’t get to a gym or the Bryant weight room. So, I was able to get to my high school track, do some running, do some body weight workouts – our coach had these packets made up with workouts to do to keep us on schedule – so there was a good amount to do. Also, once I was fully healed I was able to just throw shot in general at the high school. Just doing that helped me get back into the swing of things and get back in throwing shape.

Do you plan to use your extra year of eligibility the NCAA provides from the pandemic?

I’m still up in the air about that honestly. I’ve discussed grad school as a business major so I would be much more inclined to use it if I come back to Bryant for another year. Also, if I have a strong outdoor season it would definitely increase my odds.
