The Elon Musk–backed America PAC has spent thousands of dollars advertising on the Elon Musk–owned social media platform X to support former president Donald Trump’s campaign. According to X’s political ad disclosure data, between July 8 and October 1 the America PAC ran 59 ads, costing more than $166,000 and yielding, per X’s metrics, 32,058,424 impressions. All of the ads targeted swing states: Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, and Wisconsin.
Musk first endorsed Trump immediately following the attempted assassination against the former president in July in Butler, Pennsylvania. Since then, Musk has said he is “all in” on his support for Trump, and appeared at a second rally in Butler earlier this month. “This election is the most important election of our lifetime,” said Musk at the time. “This is no ordinary election.” It was one part of Musk’s—and the America PAC’s—efforts to turn out voters for Trump in swing states.
The America PAC has been a driving force behind voter mobilization for the Trump campaign, developing an app to help canvassers target likely voters. (The effectiveness of this strategy remains to be seen, with canvassers reportedly faking voter contacts at scale.) The PAC has offered $47 to any swing state voters who would agree to sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. Musk has also said he will give out $1 million a day to voters who sign the petition, in a move election law expert Rick Hasen described as “clearly illegal.”
Federal Election Commission filings released last week revealed that Musk has funneled $75 million into the PAC since July, dwarfing other Silicon Valley donors who back the former president. Musk has also donated to the Building America’s Future PAC, which has run anti–Kamala Harris ads aiming to dissuade Black and Muslim voters, particularly in swing states.
Musk has also used his ownership of X to further promote Trump. In August, Musk sat down with Trump for an interview hosted on X Spaces. He has also promoted and reshared conspiracy theories pedaled by the Trump campaign, including by alleging that the Democratic Party would allow undocumented immigrants to vote in order to win the election.
In one ad that ran between September 27 and October 1, the post read, “Georgia is filling up with illegal immigrants: In just 3 years, Kamala released more illegal immigrants into our country than almost 3x the population of Atlanta. End Kamala's Border Chaos and request your ballot for President Trump today.” The ad links to the website votesafe.org, which is paid for by the America PAC and where voters can look up their voter registration status and request ballots.
All of the PAC’s ads are linked to the @theamericapac X account, which links to the PAC’s website. Before his appearance at Trump’s October rally in Butler, Musk had appropriated the @america handle for the America PAC.
The America PAC has also invested heavily in ads on Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, running more than 250 ads in October alone.
A representative from X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Facebook's former diversity program manager has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $4 million from the company through fake business deals in exchange for kickbacks to fund a luxurious lifestyle, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
Barbara Furlow-Smiles, 38, served as the lead strategist, global head of employee resource groups and diversity engagement at the social media giant while she orchestrated the scheme, the Justice Department said. From January 2017 through September 2021, she led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs at Facebook and was responsible for developing and executing DEI initiatives, operations, and engagement programs.
"Furlow-Smiles used lies and deceit to defraud both vendors and Facebook employees," said Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Atlanta office. "The FBI works hard to make sure greed like this doesn’t pay off and those who commit fraud are held accountable."
Furlow-Smiles committed the fraud by linking PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App accounts to credit cards given to her by Facebook and used those accounts to pay friends, relatives, former interns at a prior job, nannies, babysitters, a hairstylist and others for goods and services that were never provided to the company, a federal complaint states.
It was unclear if her associates were being charged in connection with the fraud.
After those people received the payments, they kicked back a percentage of the funds to Furlow-Smiles, prosecutors said. The kickbacks were paid in cash and through transfers to accounts in various names, including the husband of Furlow-Smiles, prosecutors allege.
Some of the kickbacks were allegedly paid in cash sometimes wrapped in T-shirts and other items, the FBI said. She also had Facebook hire vendors that were owned and operated by friends and associates who also paid kickbacks, authorities said.
To conceal the fraud, Furlow-Smiles submitted false expense reports claiming the individuals performed work on Facebook programs and events, the DOJ said. After they were hired, Furlow-Smiles allegedly approved fake and inflated invoices. She received a portion of the money paid to the vendors under the table.
Furlow-Smiles also misled Facebook into paying money to entities who didn't provide kickbacks, including nearly $10,000 to an artist who created specialty portraits and more than $18,000 to a preschool, the complaint said.
"Motivated by greed, she used her time to orchestrate an elaborate criminal scheme in which fraudulent vendors paid her kickbacks in cash. She even involved relatives, friends, and other associates in her crimes, all to fund a lavish lifestyle through fraud rather than hard and honest work," U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said.
Furlow-Smiles used the illicit funds to fund a luxury lifestyle in California and Georgia, prosecutors said.

Waymo Set to Launch Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Tokyo by 2025
Source: hindustantimes.com
Waymo Robotaxi, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced its plans to begin testing autonomous vehicles in Tokyo in early 2025, marking the company’s first international expansion. While the Robotaxi developer has not yet committed to launching commercial services in the city, this move signals a major step toward expanding its global footprint.
Partnership with Japanese Taxi Operators
Waymo will partner with Nihon Kotsu, Japan’s largest taxi operator, and the taxi app GO to kick off its testing phase. Initially, Waymo’s Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will be manually driven by Nihon Kotsu drivers to map key areas of Tokyo, including districts like Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa, and Kōtō. These test drives will provide essential data to train Waymo’s artificial intelligence systems to navigate Tokyo’s roads efficiently.
In parallel with mapping the streets of Tokyo, Waymo will also conduct tests on a specialized closed course in the United States. This course will replicate Japanese driving conditions, helping the company prepare its self-driving technology for real-world scenarios in a left-hand traffic market like Japan.
Waymo Robotaxi said that this initial phase of testing and data gathering, which will last several quarters, is a crucial step toward understanding Tokyo’s transportation landscape. The company also stated that it plans to remain in Japan for an extended period to evaluate how its autonomous services can benefit local communities.
Nihon Kotsu will play a critical role in overseeing the management and servicing of Waymo’s vehicles throughout the testing phase.
Strategic Expansion in the U.S. and Beyond
This announcement follows a series of expansions by Waymo across the United States throughout 2024. Earlier this month, the company revealed plans to begin testing its self-driving vehicles in Miami in 2025. In November, Waymo’s driverless ride-hailing service became fully operational across Los Angeles, and in September, the company announced its planned expansions into Austin and Atlanta through a partnership with Uber.
Waymo’s move into Tokyo is particularly significant as it marks the company’s entry into a left-hand traffic market for the first time.
Japan’s Focus on Driverless Technology
Japan has emerged as a key market for autonomous vehicle technology, driven by the need to address challenges like an aging population and labor shortages. Both the Japanese national government and the Tokyo Metropolitan government have been actively promoting driverless transportation as a solution. Tokyo has designated specific test zones to accelerate the development of safe self-driving systems in the city.
Several domestic companies are also working on autonomous vehicle projects in Japan. Local startup Tier IV and robotics company ZMP are testing delivery vehicles and buses in Tokyo, while Monet Technologies, partly owned by Toyota, announced plans earlier this year to test a self-driving taxi service in Tokyo’s Odaiba district.
Competition and Market Landscape
Waymo Robotaxi’s expansion into Japan comes at a pivotal time in the autonomous vehicle industry. Just a week prior to the announcement, General Motors revealed it would shut down its Cruise Robotaxi division. Cruise, which had been a major domestic competitor to Waymo, faced significant setbacks leading to its closure.
Honda, an investor in Cruise, had initially planned to launch a driverless ride-hailing service in Japan by early 2026. However, following GM’s retreat, Honda stated that it would reassess its plans and make necessary adjustments.
Future Prospects for Waymo in Japan
With strong government backing and a growing focus on driverless technology in Japan, Waymo’s entry into Tokyo’s market positions it well for future opportunities. The partnerships with Nihon Kotsu and GO, combined with data gathered through extensive testing, will help Waymo fine-tune its autonomous systems to navigate the complexities of Tokyo’s urban environment.
As Waymo Robotaxi begins its operations in Tokyo, the company will explore how autonomous vehicles can integrate into the city’s existing transportation ecosystem. This move not only highlights Waymo’s ambition for international expansion but also underlines Tokyo’s role as a testing ground for cutting-edge mobility solutions.

Officer Crumpton Explains Consistency in Discipline for Health Goals
When it comes to achieving health goals, consistency in discipline is one of the most important factors that can make a difference. Whether you're aiming to lose weight, build muscle, or simply adopt a healthier lifestyle, staying disciplined is key. Officer Crumpton, who has worked in fitness and health training for several years, emphasizes the value of consistency in discipline as the cornerstone to long-term success. In this blog, we'll explore how developing a disciplined routine can lead to the health results you're after, and how to stay on track when things get tough.
The Importance of Consistency in Discipline
Discipline is the ability to stick with a plan, even when it's hard. It's not about having an occasional burst of motivation; it's about forming habits that help you stay focused on your health goals, day after day. Officer Crumpton points out that consistency ensures you keep moving forward toward your goal, no matter the obstacles you face.
For example, if your health goal is to lose weight, it's easy to get discouraged when you don't see immediate results. However, maintaining consistency in your workout routine, diet, and sleep schedule will pay off over time. It's this steady effort that builds momentum and results.
How to Stay Consistent with Your Health Goals
Set Clear, Realistic Goals
Before you begin your health journey, it’s important to set clear and achievable goals. Officer Crumpton stresses that vague goals like “get fit” aren’t specific enough. Instead, set measurable targets such as “lose 10 pounds in three months” or “exercise for 30 minutes, four times a week.” When your goals are clear, it's easier to stick to your plan.
Create a Routine and Stick to It
Creating a routine is another key element in achieving your health goals. A set schedule ensures that you're consistently dedicating time to your fitness and wellness activities. Officer crumpton Atlanta ga recommends having a mix of activities that keep you engaged, whether it’s running, weight lifting, or yoga. By making these activities part of your daily or weekly routine, they become second nature over time.
Track Your Progress
Tracking your progress helps you stay motivated and see how far you’ve come. Officer Crumpton advises using apps, journals, or fitness trackers to log your workouts, meals, and other health-related activities. Tracking your progress provides tangible evidence that consistency is leading to results, which can help you stay committed to your goals.
Focus on Small Wins
Big goals often feel overwhelming, but focusing on small wins can help maintain your motivation. For instance, if you’ve stuck to your diet for a week or added an extra workout session to your routine, take a moment to celebrate that accomplishment. Officer Crumpton highlights the importance of celebrating progress, no matter how small, as this helps maintain your motivation.
Overcome Setbacks with Patience
No journey is without its challenges, and sometimes life gets in the way of your health goals. Officer Crumpton emphasizes that setbacks are normal. Whether you miss a workout or indulge in unhealthy food, don’t let it derail your entire plan. Instead, practice patience and perseverance, and get back on track as soon as possible. Remember that consistency is about getting back up, no matter how many times you fall.
Build a Support System
Having a support system can make all the difference in staying consistent. Officer Crumpton advises surrounding yourself with people who encourage your health goals, whether it's a fitness partner, a family member, or a coach. A support system can help you stay accountable and motivated, especially when you're struggling to stay disciplined.
Consistency Leads to Lasting Health Results
Achieving health goals isn’t a one-time effort. It requires ongoing dedication and discipline. As Officer Crumpton explains, the key to long-term health success is consistency. By sticking to your routine, tracking your progress, and focusing on small wins, you can make steady progress toward your goals.
The good news is that with discipline and a consistent approach, you'll start to notice the positive changes in your body and mind. Remember, small steps lead to big results over time. So, whether you're looking to improve your fitness, eat healthier, or just feel better overall, consistency in discipline is the key to unlocking your health goals.

Diversions #7: Additional progress
Wow, so much has happened since #6. Where do I begin? Should I try to recap my travels to Portland or to Atlanta for WordCamp or FinCon? Should I summarize all of the progress we’ve made on the addition to our home? Should I write about my recent upgrade to an M4 MacBook Pro? Or, do I focus on the updates that have come to the ActivityPub plugin that has me rethinking how I use my personal website (yet again)?
How about all of it?!
I’ve posted a few photos from Portland, though I have many more photos that I’ve taken on film that I just haven’t developed yet. This weekend I went to do exactly that and hit a roadblock. It would help if I had fresh chemicals around!
I’ve also commented on what happened at WordCamp and wrote some key takeaways from FinCon. So I won’t rehash any of that.
Instead, I’ll focus on the reminder that traveling (in general) and going to events has a positive impact on your outlook, your network, and your business. Not all of them can be directly measured or are reflected on the bottom row a spreadsheet – but you can feel them as you move forward. You may face a challenge and end up thinking of a company or person you met at an event that can help. In short; go to events.
The addition is moving along quickly now. This sort of project seems to be one where the beginning parts; planning, drawing, documenting, etc. are the slow parts. Then, once the work begins, it is difficult to keep up with.
Working from home affords me the ability to jog outside once or twice a day to snap a photo or two of the progress. I’m very happy that I’m not the one doing the work this time.
The foundation and floor base
I know snags are inevitable. In fact, the forecast at the end of this week already looks like it will slow down progress some. But that is how these sorts of things go.
The new lighter, faster 14″ M4 Pro MacBook Pro is really a delight to use. I hit a snag or two when upgrading the software that was Intel-only to their Apple Silicon counterparts (especially Adobe) but other than just a few hiccups — the upgrade/migration process is so easy.
My previous MacBook Pro was no slouch but this one is a screamer. Building projects, running local LLMs, or just having literally every single app open doesn’t seem to phase it. Using it as a laptop, something I was never able to do with my previous computer, is also really fun. I can actually get a lot of work done and the battery life is great!
My last bit of equipment upgrading is going to be a Thunderbolt dock and at least one external SSD. I need my port situation to be a bit cleaner and I’m hoping a dock will free me up to just have a single wire running into the laptop. And, as of today, I’m not backing up using Time Machine so I cannot delay getting a new SSD.
The social media landscape is a mess! Part of me loves the messiness. It is an interesting time and lots of people are experimenting with many things. New platforms, new ideas, new ways of sharing. Gone are the days of only one or two social networks thriving.
But another part of me is frustrated. I don’t really know what I want to do with my personal blog as it relates to the social web. I have the ActivityPub plugin installed, and it works well to distribute my posts onto the fediverse as a first class citizen. But it isn’t (and likely never will be) perfect.
If you’re at all interested in your website joining the fediverse, I recommend giving the plugin a try and learning how it works. This isn’t cross-posting. It makes your website “an ActivityPub endpoint” so that the account is your website (and/or its authors). It is very cool and interesting.
The reason the ActivityPub plugin has me rethinking my personal blog use, is that I can begin to see a future where all of my favorites, boosts, quote posts, etc. live here on my website – rather than my Mastodon account. But for that I’d want to restructure my site’s design a bit (and likely my RSS feed). Of course, if I explore this at all I’ll write about it.
Regardless of how this phase of the social web shakes out I know I’ll be publishing here on my blog.
An edition of Diversions wouldn’t be complete without some links:
Christoph Rauscher’s newsletter – I like how Christoph publishes his newsletter. Lovely.
Live at Delia’s Third Happening – Site Nonsite live album recording.
Vault – By Commercial Type.
Rex Brasher Field Notes – Lovely little film about Brasher’s work as well.
Rachel Binx’s website – Go take a look.
Apple Pay Plates – This is me buying Crocs or fanny packs.
