Ypatia Kornarou is a photographer and curator based in Athens, Greece. With a background in economics, she started studying photography and later expanded her skills in art photography. Kornarou's photography is focused on fine art, with a particular focus on the environment. She has successfully held several solo and group exhibitions, including at the Environment Museum of Stymphalia and at the Municipality of Papagos-Holargos. Her work has also been recognized and awarded at major international photography competitions, including LensCulture Award 2023, Paris PX3 2023, Tifa 2023, Bifa 2023, Rosl Royal Arts 2023, ART Vue Bruxelles 2023, Minimalist Photography Award 2022, The Fc-Diary 2022, LensCulture 2022, and more. Her recent solo exhibition "Save the Forest" is ongoing at the Archaeological Site – Mytilene Castle through April 2023. Kornarou has also participated in several group exhibitions, including in Paris, London, Edinburgh, Rome, and Nizhny Tagil. As a curator, Kornarou has organized several exhibitions, including the group exhibition "Save the Water" in support of the Cultural Centre for Employees of EYDAP and the photo festival "Days with Photography" in Elefsina, as part of the 2023 European Capital of Culture Elefsina. Additionally, she is a writer and author, publishing her work in important journals such as Photonet, The Pictorial List, Up Photographers, Life is scene, Moments Collective, and more. She is a talented and impactful photographer and curator who continues to make her mark in the world of art photography.

We Are Who We Are

Triennale Milano presenta We Are Who We Are Stratificazione di linguaggi nell’arte contemporanea, un progetto di Damiano Gullì in collaborazione con Annika Pettini dedicato ad approfondire pratica e poetica di artiste e artisti italiani caratterizzati da uno sguardo trasversale e un approccio sempre più fluido rispetto alle diverse discipline. Gli incontri – parte del programma di Triennale Estate – sono strutturati in tre conversazioni one to one: ogni appuntamento è dedicato a un singolo artista con l’obiettivo di far emergere, attraverso un confronto intimo e spontaneo, la capacità di analisi e narrazione che è racchiusa nei processi di ricerca artistica e le diverse modalità in cui essa si declina. Mercoledì 10 luglio, alle ore 19.00, il terzo appuntamento vede Annika Pettini, scrittrice e responsabile Cultura per Edizioni Zero, in conversazione con l'artista Alba Zari. Alba Zari (Bangkok, 1987) si è laureata al DAMS di Bologna. Ha frequentato un corso intensivo di Fotografia Documentaria presso l’International Center of Photography di New York e ha conseguito un Master in Fotografia e Visual Design presso la NABA di Milano. Utilizza il mezzo fotografico come strumento di indagine e autoanalisi, interrogandosi sulla sua capacità di funzionare come traccia, indizio e sulla sua natura ingannevole. Il suo approccio apparentemente rigoroso e scientifico nasconde una capacità interpretativa profondamente poetica dei temi della memoria e dell'identità. Fin dall'infanzia ha condotto una vita nomade che l'ha portata a vivere in diverse città e paesi. La sua esperienza come viaggiatrice influenza e si riflette nella sua pratica fotografica, che esplora temi sociali, come ad esempio i suoi visual studies sui centri di salute mentale e sui diffusi disturbi alimentari della società americana.  Le sue ultime opere includono Fear of Mirrors (2023-2024), Rakshasa (2023-2024), Occult (2019-2023), un visual study sulla propaganda della setta dei Bambini di Dio. The Y- Research of Biological Father (2017) nasce da un viaggio alla ricerca delle sue origini attraverso il padre che non ha mai conosciuto. Places (2015), un libro e un progetto fotografico realizzato con ElementWo che si occupa di analisi della comunicazione visiva della propaganda ISIS. Ha pubblicato il breve documentario FreiKörperKultur (2021) presentato in anteprima alla Settimana della Critica di Venezia. Sta lavorando al suo primo documentario White Lies. Con il progetto Y è parte del Foam Talents 2020.  Il suo lavoro è stato presentato a festival e musei internazionali come MAXXI, Roma, London Art Fair, Circulation Paris e Athens Photo Festival. Ha vinto il premio speciale della giuria a Images Vevey (Svizzera, 2022) con l'opera Occult, il Premio Graziadei (2021) e il secondo premio al Backlight Prize (Finlandia, 2020). The eponymous photo book was published in 2020 as a bilingual edition (De/En) at Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, edited by Frizzi Krella, with texts by Frizzi Krella and Lotte Laub. The monograph came in 2020 on the shortlist at the Athens Photo Festival, on the longlist of the German Photo Book Prize in 2021, and on the shortlist for the Photo-Book Award at the Belfast Photo Festival in 2022.

Every year in the 1980s around Christmastime, my father had to register his typewriter and the imprints of each key to submit them to the police (miliția). He hammered every single letter into his Olympia. In this way, the state archived the characteristic wear of all typefaces in the country and thus kept control over the written word. Any critique of the regime could be easily tracked and identified. But at Christmas 1989, the typewriter remained silent.  In his last speech on December 21, 1989, from the balcony of the Central Committee in Bucharest, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu shouted "Alo" (Hello) into the microphone fifteen times. Again and again he restarted, but the crowd no longer responded to the "Conducator," to whom tribute poems had until recently been recited. The mood had changed. While the overthrow of the other East European dictatorships in 1989 was mostly peaceful, Romania’s Revolution ended in a bloodbath. Leaders called upon civilians to fight against nameless “terrorists”, leading to a great deal of friendly fire. 30 years after the system change, in December 2019, an EU resolution was passed, calling on the Romanian state to officially process the past events, an appeal that remains unfulfilled in Romania to this day. The events of those violent days remain shrouded in mystery and intrigue, leaving the question: was it a people’s uprising or a staged coup d’état? LAST CHRISTMAS (of Ceaușescu) focuses on questions of representation of history and institutional memory, three decades after the fall of the dictatorship.

LAST CHRISTMAS (of Ceaușescu) poses questions about the justice discourse in Romania and examines the dysfunctional dynamics and the institutional memory of the Romanian revolution three decades later. I visited museums that bear witness to the events of that time and questioned their transparency, or to what extent it is merely claimed. The focus is directed at the agency of things, at what they reveal or conceal, investigating constructions of power and the latency of controversy related to injustice and disorientation.

Dealing with the fall of the Romanian dictator Ceaușescu on Christmas Day 1989, three places are at the fore: Ceaușescu’s private house in Bucharest, the execution site in Târgoviște, and Casa Poporului, the never inaugurated ruler’s palace, for which an entire historical neighbourhood was demolished. How do they look back on us today? All three are ‘traumatised’ places, silent witnesses of an undead past, in which the echo of the personality cult still resonates today. During the 1980s there were rumours of a bathroom of pure gold that was supposedly to be found in Ceaușescu’s home. When I first entered it, I was immediately reminded of Lee Miller’s photograph. From the empty bathroom, that can now be visited, the banality of evil looks back at the viewer.

But not at Christmas 1989. On December 22, Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu are arrested at Târgoviște, of all places, the city where Vlad the Impaler alias Dracula once resided. On Christmas Day, the couple is sentenced to death in a brief show trial. The death sentence is carried out immediately. On December 26, the Christmas mass was broadcast live on Romanian TV for the first time. On the same day, the images of the execution go around the world.30 years after the system change, an EU resolution was passed, calling on the Romanian state to officially process the past events.

“Romania’s failure to address the unatoned crimes of 1989 in a legal process weighs on the state like a curse. […] The unexplained crimes still rumble underground. Και τι θα ήταν η ζωή σου χωρίς τέχνη, άρτο και θεάματα; Σίγουρα ρηχή και βαρετή. Πάντα χρειάζεται το κάτι διαφορετικό που να σε κάνει να ξεφεύγεις από την καθημερινότητα ή να σε ταξιδεύει σε μονοπάτια του νου και των αισθήσεων. Έτσι συγκέντρωσα για εσένα μουσικά και φωτογραφικά φεστιβάλ της Ευρώπης που αξίζουν ασυζητητί την προσοχή και την παρουσία σου.

Exit Festival

Το EXIT Festival είναι ένα θερινό μουσικό φεστιβάλ που διεξάγεται ετήσια στο Κάστρο Πετροβαραντίν, στο Νόβι Σαντ της Σερβίας. Είναι αναγνωρισμένο ως ταξιδιωτικός προορισμός από τα διεθνή πρακτορεία και πολυβραβευμένο ως ένα από τα Καλύτερα Ευρωπαϊκά Φεστιβάλ. Ξεκίνησε ως κίνηση των νέων για να ξορκίσει όλα τα κακά που άφησε πίσω του ο πόλεμος στη Βαλκανική Χερσόνησο. Φέτος στη φαντασμαγορική σκηνή του θα ανέβουν γνωστά ονόματα, όπως οι Ρόμπιν Σουλτς, Satori Live, Ece Ekren, DJ Mozza, DJ Pura, DJ Stole κ.ά. για να γιορτάσουν τα 20ά του ‘‘γενέθλια’’. Κανόνισε να είσαι Σερβία 8 με 11 Ιουλίου, για να διασκεδάσεις μέχρι τελικής πτώσης.

Athens Photo World 2021

Το Athens Photo World έχει επιστρέψει δυναμικά από τις 21 Μαΐου με μια σειρά εκθέσεων και εκδηλώσεων που ακολουθούν την εναρκτήρια διοργάνωση του 2019. Ο Pellegrin αιχμαλωτίζει στιγμές πόνου, αγώνα και δύναμης από τόπους μακρινούς και διαφορετικούς με κοινό παρονομαστή τον άνθρωπο. Ιαπωνία, Ινδονησία, Αφγανιστάν, Αλβανία, Αίγυπτος, Τυνησία, Λιβύη, Αιθιοπία, Λιβερία, Σουδάν, Ανγκόλα, Αϊτή, Κόσοβο, Κούβα, Παλαιστίνη, Λίβανος, Ιράκ, Βατικανό και Γαλλία, τόποι και άνθρωποι διαφορετικοί παρελαύνουν μπροστά μας μέσα από το ασπρόμαυρο κάδρο του. Για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα θα παρουσιαστεί η δουλειά του Ιταλού φωτογράφου Πάολο Πελεγκρίν, μέλους του διεθνούς πρακτορείου Magnum. Η έκθεση θα παρουσιαστεί από την 1η μέχρι την 31η Αυγούστου στο αίθριο του 4ου ορόφου της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης της Ελλάδος, στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος (ΚΠΙΣΝ) με δωρεά του Ιδρύματος Σταύρος Νιάρχος (ΙΣΝ) και με χορηγία του Ιταλικού Μορφωτικού Ινστιτούτου Αθηνών.

Paris Jazz Festival 2021

Οι κάτοικοι του Παρισιού μα και οι πολλοί τουρίστες που επισκέπτονται το Paris Jazz Festival κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού απολαμβάνουν υψηλής ποιότητας υπαίθριες τζαζ παραστάσεις στον Βοτανικό Κήπο Florel στο Μπουά ντε Βινσέν. Το φεστιβάλ εκπλήσσει κάθε χρόνο με μια ποικιλία συναυλιών που πραγματοποιούνται από καλλιτέχνες από τη Γαλλία, αλλά και από άλλες χώρες. Μέσα στο καταπράσινο πάρκο, ο επισκέπτης απολαμβάνει τη μουσική που παίζεται κατά την διάρκεια των φεστιβάλ, αποκομίζοντας μια υπέροχη πολιτιστική, καλοκαιρινή εμπειρία. Οι πύλες ανοίγουν στις 30 Ιουνίου και θα παραμείνουν ανοικτές έως τις 8 Σεπτεμβρίου 2021.

Copenhagen Photo Festival

Το φεστιβάλ φωτογραφίας της Κοπεγχάγης, το μεγαλύτερο φωτογραφικό γεγονός της Σκανδιναβίας, είναι ήδη εδώ. Άνοιξε τις πύλες του στις 3 Ιουνίου και θα τις αφήσει ανοικτές έως τις 13 του μήνα. Οι έξι νικητές του περσινού φεστιβάλ φωτογραφίας της Κοπεγχάγης επιλέχθηκαν ως σημείο αναφοράς για τη φετινή διαμόρφωση της θεματολογίας. Εστίασαν σε τρία σημεία, δηλαδή στο Framing Identity, Framing Society και Framing Vision. Είναι ο τρόπος του φεστιβάλ να ανοίξει παράθυρα σε άλλους κόσμους και να εξυπηρετήσει τον σκοπό της προβολής όλων των ειδών φωτογραφίας, εστιάζοντας στο άτομο, την κοινωνία και την τέχνη. Από τα 642 έργα, εκ των οποίων επιλέγονται 12, οι έξι καλλιτέχνες που έχουν επιλεγεί αποτελούν την επιτομή κάθε κατηγορίας.

Rock Werchter

Ένα από τα καλύτερα και ποιοτικότερα φεστιβάλ μουσικής στην Ευρώπη πραγματοποιείται από τις 30 Ιουνίου έως τις 3 Ιουλίου 2022 στο Festivalpark στο Werchter του Βελγίου. Στο Rock Werchter θα περάσεις τέσσερις μέρες ακούγοντας διάσημα συγκροτήματα, νεαρά ταλέντα, απίστευτους τραγουδιστές-τραγουδοποιούς, νέα ονόματα και τα πιο όμορφα μπιτ. Θα έχεις την τύχη λοιπόν να παρακολουθήσεις λίγο από όλα τα είδη της ροκ και να ξεφαντώσεις όπως αρμόζει στο μεγαλύτερο καλοκαιρινό φεστιβάλ του Βελγίου. Οι συντελεστές του είναι πάντα παγκόσμιας κλάσης και οι συνθήκες διοργάνωσης εξαιρετικές.
