Exploring Atauro: A Hidden Gem

When I first set foot on the breathtaking island of Atauro, located in the captivating country of Timor-Leste, I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and curiosity. This hidden gem offers a unique blend of untouched natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a sense of adventure that is truly unparalleled. As a passionate traveler and adventurer, I knew I had stumbled upon a place that would forever leave its mark on my soul.
Getting there and the Best Time to Visit:
Atauro is nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Timor Sea, just a short boat ride away from Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste. Launching from Dili, the boat ride gives you a chance to marvel at the deep blue of the Timor Sea, with Atauro Island slowly growing larger on the horizon. The island enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season, which typically spans from May to October. This period offers sunny days, calm seas, and optimal conditions for exploring the island's underwater wonders. However, the wet season (November to April) brings lush greenery, dramatic waterfalls, and the opportunity to witness the raw power of nature.
Where to Stay:
Accommodation options in Atauro range from rustic beachside bungalows to eco-friendly resorts. For a truly immersive experience, I highly recommend staying at one of the local guesthouses or homestays. These establishments provide an authentic glimpse into the island's culture and traditions, while also offering comfortable and welcoming accommodations.
What to Do:
Atauro is a haven for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts. There's plenty to do, both underwater and on land. Let me take you through some options: - Diving: The waters surrounding the island are teeming with vibrant coral reefs, an abundance of marine life, and awe-inspiring underwater drop-offs. Explore the depths of the ocean, swim alongside majestic sea turtles, and discover the hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface. - Hiking: There's an array of hiking trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints, secluded beaches, and charming villages. Strap on your hiking boots and immerse yourself in the island's rugged beauty as you traverse through lush forests, encounter exotic bird species, and breathe in the invigorating mountain air.
Where to Eat:
One of the highlights of my Atauro journey was indulging in the local cuisine. The island's coastal location means that seafood takes center stage in many dishes. Don't forget to try the traditional dish of ikan saboko, a mouthwatering grilled fish served with rice and vegetables.
Sights and Tours:
Immerse yourself in Atauro's rich cultural heritage by visiting traditional villages where locals warmly welcome visitors with open arms. Engage in conversations with the island's friendly inhabitants, learn about their traditional way of life, and gain insights into their deep-rooted beliefs and customs. For a truly unforgettable experience, embark on a dolphin and whale-watching tour. The sight of these magnificent creatures is sure to leave an indelible mark on your heart.
Nightlife and Shopping:
While Atauro is not known for its vibrant nightlife, you can still enjoy peaceful evenings by the beach, stargazing, and listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean. When it comes to shopping, Atauro offers an array of unique handcrafted souvenirs, including intricately woven textiles, artisanal pottery, and traditional wood carvings. Bring home a piece of Atauro's rich cultural heritage as a cherished memento of your unforgettable journey.
Your Atauro adventure awaits!
So, fellow adventurers, if you yearn for a travel experience that goes beyond the ordinary, pack your bags, set your sights on Atauro, and allow this captivating island to awaken your sense of wonder, ignite your spirit of exploration, and leave you forever changed. Read the full article

10 Days Schedule for Timor Leste - The Ultimate Backpacking Guide to Timor Leste

Timor Leste is most likely one of the least took a trip country in Southeast Asia getting only around 60,000 travelers each year. The majority of those travelers are on a visa run from Indonesia, and they frequently remain simply in Dili which is a pity as the nation shines on its own when you began to head out of the capital city.
In August 2018, I chose to spend 10 days traveling in Timor Leste trying my best to get off the beaten path as much as possible and although I had 10 days guide to checking out Timor-Leste cities, culture, and sensational countrysides. Timor Leste Schedule Map Why Go to Timor Leste With the overtourism we are seeing all over the world, taking a trip in Timor Leste is a breath of fresh air. The nation lacks tourism infrastructure hence permitting us travelers to check out the nation as it is suggested to be, through the methods the residents do.
You are likewise rewarded with sensational nature from the marine life of the undersea world around Atauro island to the quiet mountain area of Maubisse, all of which are untouched by mass tourism, which is difficult to come by in Southeast Asia. If you are looking for a real experience, this is the location to be.
How to Get Here
The cheapest way to get to Timor Leste by air is to get yourself to Bali and from there, fly from Denpasar airport to Dili via NAM or Sriwijaya Air. The flight can cost as low as 35 USD per method if you reserve it beforehand. You can Bangkok or Singapore so it is best to check out Timor Leste in between your trip through Indonesia. If you are an EU passport holder, you are excused from the visa requirement so do not line up when you get here at the airport. Simply go directly through to the immigration and stamp your passport in. For the rest people, you can get the visa at the airport for 30 USD.
Make certain you have some USD on hand when you get here. When to Go The very best time to visit Timor Leste is during the
dry season which is
from June to September where you will optimize clear days, great visibility undersea and lessen the chance of getting stuck someplace due to flooded roadways. Where to Stay Dili- Timor Backpackers-15.00 USD/Night(Dorm)| 65 USD/Night(Twin Space)-The only hostel with a dependable wifi. Atauro- Atauro Dive Resort-18 USD/Night(Dormitory)| 35 USD/Night(Double Space with Sea View)Hato Builico- Pousada Alecrim Leublora Green Village Facebook page and compose
an enjoyable experience for anybody. If you wish to take a trip easily, you will require to rent a motorcycle or a jeep which, as pointed out above, is not cheap at all. Food can be cheap if you consume outside of the tourist location and if do not mind eating regional food. It should cost you around 2 - 4 USD per meal. If you are eating at a western restaurant, prepare to pay double that. Hostels are just readily available in Dili and Atauro island and it must cost around 10 - 18 USD. You do not have many alternatives other than remaining in guesthouses or homestays beyond Dili and it should cost in between 20 - 45 USD per night. Hotels in Dili can go upward 45 - 75 USD per night.
Reliable WIFI is difficult to come by and in Dili, I just found one place with trustworthy WIFI which is at the one-day supreme guide onthings
to do in Dili. Atauro Island
(2 nights)One of the best trip you can make in Timor Leste is to take a ferryboat up north to Atauro island, a remote island off the coast of Dili and is one of the very best places to go snorkeling and diving. The very best part is you don't even need to take a trip long hours to get here. It's only 2 hours away by ferry and you will be rewarded with a quiet angler town, tranquil Beloi beach, and the spectacular reef for you to check out.
Snorkeling is remarkable even simply off the Beloi beach. There are lots of fish and colorful coral reefs all along the stretch and a lot more so the further you are from the beach. There is likewise another area to go snorkeling/diving but you will have to get a boat out which you can go with [email protected]
If you are looking for a way to arrive and on things to do on Atauro island, examine out my ultimate guide to Atauro island. Dili(1 night)From Atauro, you will need to get a ferryboat or a speedboat back which leaves at around 3 PM so you will require to invest a night in Dili again to prepare for your next journey into the mountains.
Hato Builico (1 night)
Picture by Kate Dixon This town is a fantastic base for hiking the greatest peak in Timor Leste, the Ramelau peak which is best throughout dawn when the sky is clear and the weather condition is stable. You will have to remain one night in this town and at 3:30 AM, begin treking the mountain and you need to be at the summit by 6 AM, in time for the dawn.
Getting to this town is a little tricky as it is quite remote and the roadway is not in a good condition so if you have a 4WD, it will make your journey far more comfortable. If not, then what you can do is take an open-roof truck from a Taibessi bus stop in Dili to Maubisse which should cost you around 3 USD and will take 3 hours and then from the Maubisse market, find a flight from the residents that go to Hato Builico which should take you around 2 hours. Start early from Dili so you have adequate time to figure out your trip to Hato Builico from Maubisse.
Maubisse (2 nights)
After a hike like that, it is constantly nice to have a good peaceful place for you to rest and thankfully, Maubisse, the town you went through the day before is best for you to do nothing in. The town is lodged in between the gorgeous hills and mountains of Timor Leste and with its cool breeze, all around unblemished nature, there is no better location to kick back, unwind and enjoy the sound of nature.
This is even much better if you stay at the Green School, which is a location where the educate the local neighborhood on how to grow certain greeneries in this area. They also use an actually nice accommodation in a conventional hut with a killer of the mountains.
You can likewise walk up the hill to Pousada de Maubisse and delight in the view there as the guest home is perfectly found on top of the highest hill in town and you will be able to see a sweeping 360 view of the town and the landscape surrounding it.
Dili (1 night)
After 2 days in the mountain, you will see nearly every thing Timor Leste has to use from mountains and beaches and you can take the truck back to Dili, rest and prepare to fly house.
If you have more time in the nation and you don't mind roughing it out, you can spend 4 days traveling from Dili to Jaco Island and back to truly finish the schedule.
I didn't do this as I found the roadway eastward is among the worst one out there and taking a trip beyond Los Palos by public transport ended up being undependable and tiresome. Even when getting to the Jaco island, I will not be able to stay overnight on the island as it is thought about spiritual to the local people so I would be there for only a few hours for snorkeling and need to take a trip back through the exact same horrid roadway for another 2 days.
If you have a 4WD and are looking for more experience, continue your journey with a see to Jaco island, one of the most remote and most stunning islands of the nation.
+ 4 Days to Jaco Island (Optional)
Baucau (1 night)
You can easily drive for 12 hours to Jaco beach if you have your own 4WD and you wish to but I would suggest breaking the journey up into 2 days by spending a night in Baucau, the 2nd greatest city in the country. You will unlikely to see any tourists here as for the majority of the locations outside Dili, which is best for you to get a peek of how the bulk actually lives in the nation.
Baucau likewise have a couple of great colonial architectures that deserve exploring such as the Pousada de Baucau, an old pension utilized by the Portuguese now became a guesthouse, and the Baucau Old Market, a grand colonial structure that is considered to be the landmark of the city.
There is likewise a nice public swimming pool for you to leap in and you will wish to if you decided to take a trip along the dirty, pothole-ridden road that links Dili and Baucau via a bus.
Jaco Beach + Jaco Island (2 nights)
Photos by Andidut
Travel to Jaco island is not easy but the reward deserves it as you will be getting here in an empty island with a beautiful white sand beach, clear water, and sensational reef begging for you to check out. Make certain you have a snorkeling equipment with you as you will not be able to rent anywhere in Jaco beach or the island. That's how remote this location is.
Dili (1 night)
After remaining at the Jaco beach for 2 nights, you are still a long way to return to Dili. It should take you around 12 hours to drive the whole method so start your journey early, get back to civilization, enjoy your last night in Dili prior to flying back to Bali.

Gleno, Ermera
My first trip out of Dili, other than hiking on Atauro Island, took me to one of Timor-Leste’s two landlocked municipalities, up into the beautiful hills of Ermera. I spent two nights in Gleno, the largest town in the municipality, home to around 9,000 people. It certainly had a different atmosphere to Dili, and a pleasantly cooler climate. @exploringtimor Exploring Gleno, Ermera #timorleste…
