I am a New York photographer, I have lived here since 1978. I was born in NH in 1958, my father was a small town newspaper editor. Photography is in my family. My grandfather pioneered working with photography and fingerprinting in the Philiadelphia police department. My uncle worked for my father on one of his newspapers. I took pictures for the high school newspaper and track team. My images were published. I learned to develop and print pictures from my uncle and worked for my father’s newspaper.

I would have wanted to study photography, but due do some family problems, I was only able to study graphic arts. Finally I moved to NYC. Initially I worked with film cameras and printed my pictures. I was working with typography and graphic arts initially in typography. I worked in that industry for a number of years until desktop publishing eliminated the industry. I had learned how to do programming and developed an astrology program which I published. I was able to start my business. A competitor gave me an offer I didn’t want to refuse. I went back to school and later moved professionally into software engineering, in which I have worked until recently, primarily in advertising and promotion technology and am well versed in advertising.

I have been doing photography as essentially an avid amateur for many years. My partner is a writer and I was doing photography to help support his work. He did plays and I photographed the actors. He did movies and a television series and I did the cinematography.

How Design Thinking Helped Me Understand Virgo and Pisces

Over the last few years, I've had the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of design, and I was delighted to find that learning to think like a designer helped me to become a better astrologer.

During the early days of the pandemic, a couple of software developers I knew where bored, so we spent some of our weekends creating astrology apps. I had no experience designing software whatsoever, but I dove in head-first, creating icons in Canva and user flows on scraps of paper. A few months of coding later, an Android app existed that looked exactly like what I imagined in my head.

I started with the hubris of a novice, but seeing an app I had designed working on my phone made me feel like a god. I threw myself into learning everything I could about designing apps. I became fascinated with UX design, flew through Google's UX certification course in a couple of months, and got an internship at an augmented reality gaming company who was working on bringing Dungeons and Dragons to the Metaverse.

UX designers are web/app designers, who are less interested in creating a good aesthetic and more interested in the way websites and apps function. They specialize in making apps and websites that feel good to use and are accessible for everyone. There is a great deal of creativity in the UX field, but creating apps and websites for companies requires UX designers to be practical. There is a process UX designers are required to follow, benchmarks they have to meet, and usability guidelines they have to follow. (A UX designer wouldn't put green text on a red background, for example, because those two colors together are a hazard for colorblind people.) At the same time, UX designers can't just read the guidelines and put together the optimal color scheme by number. Their decisions require human discernment. They need to answer: Optimal for what? What goals are we trying to reach and why? What dream of the future are we manifesting?

As an astrologer, I recognized the UX designer's balance of dreaming and practical discernment as the balancing act of Pisces and Virgo.

I knew from my experience as a fiction writer that creative process always involves alternating between creative expression and analytical editing, but I was delighted to find in my studies of UX design that designers have codified their experience with the creative process into a 5-stage design thinking process.

Understanding the design thinking process did wonders for my ability to see Virgo and Pisces working together in action.

Step 1: Empathize

Pisces: Empathy for the Self

The creative process begins with Pisces. It begins with dreaming. This is the stage of the creative process where the sticky notes and colorful pens come out. It's when writers draw maps and create story bibles, when visual artists doodle.

The fluid, generative, piscean time is the most fun for many creatives, so we don't often spend a lot of time reflecting why this dreaming time is important. Dreaming is the pleasure reward for doing what we do, so the pleasure of creation is enough, right?

There is, however, more to this stage than just play. During this stage we are building empathy.

If we have a great deal of freedom in choosing what we will create, we often begin by empathizing with ourselves, connecting with the deep feeling sides of our own psyches and playing with different ideas.

As a student, I wasn't creating for a client, so my design process began with an app called Sharpen that randomly generates ideas for design projects. It gives you prompts like: Design a typeface for the CIA and try a playful style. The projects are specific enough to trigger your assumptions and associations, but they are vague enough to leave lots of room for creativity.

An example of a Sharpen prompt that I played around with was creating a menu for a fancy restaurant. I live in Portland, Oregon, and I immediately thought of the "Colin the Chicken" sketch from Portlandia. I imagined a menu that included links to all of the ingredients, allowing you to trace their history and see pictures of the farms they came from and get to know the farmers that raised them.

Because I lived in Portland, I naturally projected my environment and experience onto the vague idea of a "fancy restaurant." A person from Texas might have envisioned an app for a very nice barbecue place. A person from Barcelona might have thought of tapas.

The differences between these different ideas for apps reveal the importance of subjectivity in the domain of Pisces. These differences about what "restaurant" means are the unconscious assumptions and projections that we place on otherwise blank or bland things. When artists say that they see what is already there in a block of stone or on a blank canvas, and their job is just to let it out, the vision they are describing is Pisces.

During this first stage of the process, it is important to dream wildly. I never forgot that I was creating an app that needed to be professional, but I allowed myself to imagine what it might be like to create a calendar app for a cult or a planner for a touring 80s band.

Pisces and Virgo: Dreaming with the Inner Critic

When we are dreaming, we want to be in an open non-judgmental space. That state of consciousness is Pisces' happy place, but Pisces and Virgo are two sides of the same coin. You can't have one without the other. When you are dreaming, Virgo's critical analysis doesn't just disappear.

If you have done creative writing, you may have heard of the inner critic. It is the part of you that can't stop evaluating and judging. During the dreaming phase of the creative process, it doesn't just make it difficult to keep an open mind. It often seems to give feedback as if it has no idea what's happening, like a friend who corrects your grammar when you show them a painting.

Virgo is that inner critic. Most creativity guides tell you to tell the inner critic to go to hell, but it has a valuable function while you're in the dreaming stage: record keeping.

As a design student, when I was looking for a problem to solve, I went through many prompts in Sharpen, and I had dozens of dreamy ideas, but I dreamed in an organized way. I kept careful records of the prompts I considered and took screenshots of each one.

The purpose of the record keeping in this stage of the process is twofold:

First, it ensures that there is a record of your process so that you and other people can see how and why you made the decisions you did. Pisces says the tendency to do things just because, and it's difficult when you're in a Pisces state to explain why you do the things you do. You're like a romantic poet following the winds of inspiration. You probably won't know why you're making the decisions you're making while you're in the dreaming stage, but you will tell stories about your process later, so that it will look like what you did makes sense to other people. At the dreaming stage of the process, Virgo's job is to follow along as a notetaker, taking pictures of all of your sticky notes and the notes you made on bits of paper, so the stories you tell people about your process have evidence.

The second thing the record keeping does is it gives Virgo something to do. You can't just shut Virgo off, but Virgo likes keeping track of details, and knowing that Virgo will have lots of details to sort through later on in the process is inspiring for Virgo. It helps Virgo have faith that it's not going to be left out of the process entirely.

Pisces: Empathizing with Others

It is a rare creation that is only concerned with the subjective experience of the creator. In my design course, I learned that many business owners make the mistake of choosing projects from the founder's objective experience alone, making the things they wish existed, assuming that everyone has the same problems and wants them to be solved in the same way.

During the empathize phase of the design process, it is important to connect with your subjective self, but it is also important to break out of your biases and assumptions. While Pisces seems to be driving the empathy train, since it is a sign that is concerned with feelings, breaking out of your subjective lens requires rigor. You have to go out and gather data, talk to people, listen to their experiences of the problem and incorporate them into your design. All of these tasks are part of the Virgo function.

Empathizing with other people is very much about Virgo and Pisces working in tandem. Virgo needs to listen. It needs to take careful notes. It needs to understand with the mind. Pisces connects with the people we're talking to. It empathizes. It understands with the heart.

Step 2: Define

After you have gathered a bunch of ideas, you will be left with an enormous amount of information to filter through. You need to decide on a project. You can't do them all, at least not right now. One has to be prioritized over the others.

During this stage of the process, it is essential to involve both Virgo and Pisces.

Virgo: Analytical Discernment

Virgo sifts through all of the ideas that you've generated, and it decides what ideas are practical to implement. When I was working on projects for my portfolio site, I knew the projects that I wanted to feature on the site needed to display my skills. They needed to be professional, and they needed to be understandable to future employers. I quickly decided that building an app for a cult probably wouldn't look especially professional. I also decided that creating a "Colin the Chicken" app that pokes fun at Portland might not be the best idea since I will be looking for jobs in Portland.

Pisces: Discernment with Heart

At this phase it would be very easy to pick a project strictly on practicality. However, when you are working on a creative project for a long time, it's important to have some kind of personal, emotional connection with what you're making, even if it's just empathizing with the people who are having the problem you're trying to solve.

Virgo cares about the bottom line, and it's easy to cut the heart out of a process when you're working exclusively in a Virgo space. Once you have eliminated the problem options, it's important to allow Pisces back into the process. There are almost always a few options in the end that are practical and could be implemented. The final decision should come from the heart. Pisces is a water sign. It's closely connected with your feelings.

In the end, I decided that I would create a website for people who are looking for rental homes. I have been doing a lot of house hunting myself, and I am frustrated with the available options, so I knew it would be easy to empathize with renters.

Step 3: Ideate

Once you've decided what you're going to create, it's time to figure out what exactly that thing might look like.

You might be tempted to go with your first thought. "First though, best thought," right? But that's not the best idea.

The human brain is lazy. It prefers to go with the obvious thing first. When you're being creative, you don't want to do the obvious thing. Everyone else is doing the obvious thing--because they also learned "first thought, best thought.

You want to create something sparkling and original, and that means trying on lots of ideas, forcing your brain to break out of its assumption ruts and dig deep for novel solutions.

The best way to get your brain out of a rut is to play. During this stage of the design process, designers once again break out their favorite pens and sticky notes and come up with as many solutions as possible. In the way of Pisces, they accept and love their creative ideas without judgement.

Only after sketching out at least 8 possible solutions do designers add Virgo back into the mental mix. They look at all their ideas with discernment, choosing a solution that is practical to implement--and, at least, a little fun.

Step 4: Prototype

Most people think that the prototype phase is the entirety of the creative process. By now, you know that there is a lot more to the process than that.

The prototype phase is the stage when you start to actually build something. If you are a writer, this is when you sit down and write a first draft. If you are a designer, this is when you break out your design apps and put together wireframes.

The mix of Virgo and Pisces during this stage is unique for each creator. Some creators lean heavily on Virgo, like the science fiction writer William Gibson, who reads over his entire book, making corrections every morning before he starts work. Other creators are more piscean, like Philip K. Dick, who flooded his brain with chemicals and creatively flailed at his stories for weeks at a time in a shed.

Some disciplines impose their own requirements. UX design is highly technical. If you don't keep Virgo close by every moment you're in a design app, you'll quickly get frustrated when your designs are too disorganized to behave properly in demos. If your art is more like throwing paint at the wall, you may enjoy telling Virgo to chill and take pictures, far away from where the action is going on.

All creative styles and disciplines, however, involve a mix of Pisces and Virgo. Even Jackson Pollack, one of the more piscean painters on the planet, needed to clean the paint off, eventually.

Step 5: Test

The last stage of the design process is the phase most creatives loathe the most. It is the phase when your creative brainchild is done, and it's time to present it to other people and see what they think.

In the UX design world, this is the time when you put your prototype on a phone (or, worse, PowerPoint slides), show people how it works, and get feedback.

If you're a musician, this is the time when you play your new song for the small group of friends and collaborators who understand your style and will tell you the truth.

This stage is called the test phase and not the performance phase because there's a good chance the process isn't over. If you want to create something that speaks to other people, Virgo's criticism should be embraced during this time as you listen, once again, to the people who need your work with piscean empathy and compassion, and the determination to return to the creative process as long as it takes to manifest your vision in the world.

Conclusion

The design thinking process outlined above is elegant and simple, but the creative process is fluid and messy. Even in the Google course we were taught that progress moves in spirals, circling round and round through different phases of the design process over and over again, refining and perfecting.

Design thinking can help us to understand where we are in the creative process, to discern the potentials and pitfalls of our current phase, but it is not an assembly line of creativity. It is a dance between the practical analyst and the wild creative. In the language of astrology, it is the dance of the archetypes Virgo and Pisces.

Tommy is one of two adopted sons of two Blackthorne alums and spy legacies who fell in love, Robert Black & George Eaton. To understand Tommy is to understand his dads:

The Eaton family is an American legacy family, though by the time Tommy and his brother are adopted, George Eaton has moved out of the spy world and instead uses his knowledge of technology to start a software development company and AIs. They had only adopted two kids because George had reached a breakthrough in his company -- one of his employees had created an AI that they had been working towards -- but not long afterwards the AI work ( and the employee who created it ) went missing. After this, his company slowly starts a downwards spiral, and it financially affects the Black-Eaton family badly.

The missing employee eventually is found and killed by Robert so they can steal back the software, but it ends up being the wrong software they had stolen back. As far as they’re concerned, the software died with the employee ( Ophelia’s mom ) .

Robert Black’s grandfather was a former Chief of Intelligence at MI5, making the Black family well-known in the UK spy world. After graduating from Blackthorne, he had been able to get his own job at MI5, which was the reason for him and George moving to London together. More to come about him later !

Tommy and his brother ( who aren’t blood relatives, but were adopted together ) , are kept in the loop with everything regarding the spy world, because one they too would follow in their fathers’ footsteps and join the spy world. It could’ve easily been a stressful situation to grow up in, but Tommy’s dads have always been kind and he has a positive relationship with them both, so the spy world has been a future that Tommy has always wanted for himself, rather than one his parents are pushing him into.

At the age of eight Tommy gets really sick and nearly doesn’t make it. It’s a miracle that he survives, but the family suddenly have all these bills and doesn’t know how to pay for them. Robert is far too proud to ask his family for money ( will forever feel on thin ice with them because of his sexuality, which took them a long time to come to terms with ) , and George’s company is bleeding money each day, so they’re forced to take matters into his own hands.

Robert has no choice but to quietly moonlight as a hitman for extra cash. And the money’s great, at least for a while ! He continues it well after they’ve paid off the bills, though eventually MI5 finds out and immediately fires and blacklists him to work for any other spy agencies. It’s a rough life, and the Black and Eaton families shame them and stop speaking to them for a long time. Tommy, of course, internalizes this as his fault, knowing it only had to be done because he got sick. While his dads never made him feel like that ( because I cannot stress enough that he does not have daddy issues okay ) , it makes him decide that no matter what, everything he does going forward will be for the sake of his parents.

So he becomes the perfect son, making sure to get the best grades and getting into the best prep school ( tesch prep ) so he had a smooth acceptance into his higher education goal : Blackthorne Institute. Both his fathers had loved it there ( and not just because they had met there ) , so Tommy knows that it’s the place for him.

Despite his better judgment, his dads convince him to take a year off after high school and have some fun before going to Blackthorne ( gee i wonder why ) . He spends this time traveling and working odd jobs to save money, and it’s during his travels that he meets a civilian and falls in love. One year turns into two because of this relationship, and he’s so love he’s seriously considering giving up his plans for good, but it’s his brother that is able to talk sense into him and remind him of the life he had left behind. Tommy, unfortunately, is a wuss and can’t deal with saying goodbye himself, because he knows he doesn’t have it in him to make the right move, so he has his brother be the one to essentially end things with her. What he doesn’t know is that his brother tells the girl Tommy died, haha !

So Tommy and his brother move to America and go to Blackthorne together… and maybe it’s because of all the stories he had heard, or because Tommy WANTS to like it so badly, but he really loves his time there. Sure, it’s dirtier and not as nice as he had imagined it to be, but he’s surrounded by people in the business that he wants to be in. He’s also quick to realize how much of a mistake taking two years off had been, because it takes him nearly an entire semester to get back to the skill level he had been at previously. Tommy vows to not let anything else get in the way of his career, at least until he has something to show for himself.

He had been bitter when Blackthorne closed and he’s still bitter about it now, because number one on his list of goals had always been to graduate from his parents’ alma mater. So naturally he’s bitter about being at Gallagher, and thinks it’s not as great as Blackthorne, especially after the disaster explosion that was last year. He won’t voice his opinion to just anyone, because he’s not looking to get chewed out, but he’s not a fan.

He’s about as serious as he sounds, personality wise. It takes a lot to make him smile and a lot more to make him laugh, and Tommy is more known for raising his hand in class or outside smoking a cigarette than much else. He’s quiet but not shy, just doesn’t see the point in talking without purpose ( and hates when people do it themselves ) . Has his eye on the prize which is a nice job for himself and being successful and making his dads proud. He’s a lil broody and sarcastic, kinda gets mistaken for a bad boy but? He’s not? He’s a giant fucking nerd thanks.

Thoughts On: HEXEN II

After developing two fantastic games utilizing the id tech 1 engine -- also known as the DOOM engine -- Raven Software found themselves once again at the forefront of technological advancement when their neighbors id Software released a little game called Quake. Using a brand new, fully 3D rendered engine, Quake revolutionized first person shooters and PC gaming graphics. After the successes of Heretic and Hexen, Raven was deep in the throes of developing a third game in their dark fantasy series, this one titled Hecatomb. Sadly, this game never came to pass, as John Romero (who’d had heavily helped develop the previous two games) left id Software to found his own company, abandoning Hecatomb in the process. At this point, Activision Publishing acquired Raven and the rights to distribute future games they developed. Activision told Raven that they wanted to see the Heretic and Hexen games split into two separate franchises as both games were different in gameplay styles. So rather than a final third game to wrap up a trilogy, ideas from Hecatomb were then split between Hexen II and Heretic II. While this yielded mixed results, we’ll look first at Hexen II, a game that was highly anticipated upon release, and whose legacy is an uneven yield.

The story this time around is that the third and final Serpent Rider, Eidolon, has taken over the word of Thyrion. Separated into four lands, Thyrion is infested with Eidolon’s minions, and it’s up to one of four warriors to take him down: the Crusader, Assassin, Necromancer, and Paladin. What’s neat about this premise is that each of the warriors comes from one of the four lands -- Blackmarsh, Mazaera, Thysis, and Septimus, respectively. And each land has a different cultural theme -- Medieval European, Mesoamerican, Ancient Egyptian, and Greco-Roman, also respectively. Also very interesting about this setup is that each land is being ruled by one of the Four Fucking Horsemen of the Apocalypse -- Famine, Death, Pestilence, and War also also respectively. Off the jump there is a lot going on here, a lot more detail than the previous two games about the worlds and what is happening. This works to the game’s credit in attempting to set up a distinct world for this entry in the game series, but somehow, it falls a little flat. In previous games the player encounters a variety of monsters and enemies that all carry over from hub to hub, level to level, giving the player a chance to learn their attacks and be aware of how to defend themselves. There’s also overarching aesthetics that maintain a steady, immersive feel to the worlds presented. Hexen II’s decision to split the hubs into unique lands works against it, as each land as its own unique enemies and aesthetic and architecture. Just as the player has a chance to get used to enemy tactics and tricks (thanks to some stellar AI work), those strategies are abandoned as the next world is loaded up with new enemies and new look, throwing the player off and breaking the immersion. As much as I tried to get into it, what it ends up feeling like is the standard issue Water World, Fire World, Sand World, etc of old NES platformers. This is not to say that the worlds aren’t good looking, however -- Raven modified the shit out of id tech 2′s textures and polygonal aspects, crafting a still-gorgeous game which takes full advantage of the technology.

Progression here is also slightly different from the previous Hexen, but is a very welcome course change. Each character class has different skills and abilities, and as you play through the game, you’ll gain experience and level up. Returning from the previous game are the fact that each class has their own four weapons, using 1) no mana ammo 2) blue mana 3) green mana and 4) both mana. As usual, the fourth weapons need to be assembled from pieces in order to be used, but what overpowered destruction they bring. My favorite class is Crusader, whose skills and weapons focus on defensive measures, but his ultimate weapon is the Light bringer. It fires a steady stream of what can basically be called pure light, burning through any enemy in a matter of seconds, and the drain on Mana is negligible. It’s possible to reach the max level of 12 through the game, and each character receives a new passive ability at levels 3 and 6. It’s always nice to notice that you’ve gained a level during the adventure, but it usually happens well after the fact. I had a difficult time hearing the audio cue to let me know that I’d leveled up and now had extra health, or new ability. I had to go into the revamped inventory screen, which now shows key quest items as well as the current items in your pocket.

In fact, Hexen II’s biggest immediate suffering is that there seems to be a lack of feedback. There’s little in the way of gratifying sound or feel whenever your attacks land, which is doubly frustrating when most attacks are ranged and as far away from the very deadly monsters. Up close and personal melee attacks seem to have a weird range, sometimes being able to hit at different distances, but it’s hard to know exactly how and when that’s going to happen. The inventory system is fine, objects work they way they’re supposed to. Most of the problems come from the early usage of id tech 2. Quake is not a game designed around interactivity, despite Hexen II being the exact opposite. id tech 2 takes away the Action button, so you walk into panels or switches to operate them, no button mashing required. There’s also no minimap, so navigating become a trying issue. But projectiles in this game don’t seem to have an impact; there’s no oomph to it, similarly to Quake’s monster who rarely stagger when hit. This is a problem because multiple times will occur when you’re firing rapidly at damage-sponge enemies, wondering if you’ve hit them enough to count, counting each shot, watching your steadily diminishing mana fall away, waiting hoping praying that this isn’t another time where you’re going to be forced to use the melee weapon, and then they are suddenly dead and you didn’t know they were close to death. It’s not as frustrating in the early levels, where you’re Level 1 and Everything Hurts and Everything Takes A Lot To Kill. But by Level 9, there are bigger, badder, more horrifying enemies who soak up so much damage that it feels like a Thoroughly Epic Duel every single time. This, perhaps, is meant to make up for the fact that -- unlike Hexen which sent waves of hordes of squads of monsters at the player at once -- Hexen II lobbies much fewer enemies at a time. In fact, I’m hard pressed to remember any time I fought more than five at a time, and even that is a generous number. But since each of the enemies are so much more resilient, anything more than three becomes an exercise in dodging and weaving and running for cover in order to get in a few shots and quaff a drink from a healing elixir, because these fuckers hit, hit hard, and hurt harder. Especially the Four Horsemen, who are so intense and difficult that I was convinced for a moment that the game was building up to a boss run near the end that would have been insurmountable. Fortunately, thank fuck, there wasn’t. And yet, while the increased difficulty of the enemies comes with the bonus of impressive AI (most notable in the Were-Jaguar warriors, who leap and roll and attack like real human opponents), it also comes with the downside of empty stretches of pathfinding. Where in Hexen enemies would respawn with abandon in an effort to wear down the player, Hexen II seemingly keeps a limit on the number of enemies involved on a map. Once they’re dead, they’re dead, which then makes wandering around afterwards an exercise in frustrated boredom searching for clues and hints to the puzzles.

Speaking of which, while feedback and aesthetics are weak points, if there’s anything that the game truly bounces players out of the game, it’s the puzzles. Blackmarsh is host to one of the most infamous puzzle glitches in the series, possibly in all RPG gaming, the solution to which is based on how your character enters a particular courtyard. Depending on which turn the player takes, this will then spawn a clue in one of three locations based on your entry point, along with the necessary quest item in one of three locations after gathering the clue. However, the clue itself can be accidentally destroyed. It can also be missed entirely, and if you don’t find the clue you can’t go directly to the quest item location knowing the solution -- it can only be solved in the order of clue, location, item. So if you somehow miss or even destroy the clue itself -- and Hexen II is rife with destructible items holding hidden mana and health so chances are you’re breaking a lot of shit -- you’re out of luck. I discovered this far, far too late, and had to start the whole game over because I didn’t have a recent enough save file that I could utilize to go back to. Thankfully, this was fairly early on in the game, but it serves as a brutal low point that comes back to haunt the player in the Egyptian levels, where a maddeningly opaque puzzle involving time travel and astrology nearly drove me to a walkthrough and early onset baldness. Elsewhere, puzzles are item-based rather than key-based like in Hexen, which revolve around gathering items, transporting them to a location, and then receiving either a new item or a key. Sometimes these items need to be altered or transmutated; the game is questionably vague about what is necessary sometimes. Fortunately, despite the veiled hints, most fetch quests are simple enough to solve. But the lack of enemies giving way to empty hallways and corridors makes those fetch quests empty and tedious, moreso than they ought to be.

Hexen II isn’t a bad game by any means. It’s very much a product of 1997. New technology, advancements in PC gaming, experimentation with new control schemes and movements, a lot of games at the time featured both innovation and frustration in equal measure. Hexen II is a solid game at its core, with great direction from the returning team, a great soundtrack, fantastic graphics and sound design, and RPG progression. But all of these upgrades come at the cost of a more simplistic version of Hexen that is somehow trying to have the straightforward run-n-gun gameplay of Heretic and the brutal dungeon crawl of Hexen. Puzzles suffer, shooting mechanics suffer, and immersion suffers. What it ends up being is Hexen Lite, not as good as the original, but fine on its own. Would I go back and play it? Sure, at some point I’d love to, but it didn’t draw me in the same way that Hexen did, not even as much as Heretic. But it’s a Quake engine game (which I’m a sucker for) and a 1997 game (which I’m a sucker for, goddammit), and despite its flaws it represents a moment in gaming which I can’t help but be nostalgic for. Your mileage may vary, but be advised that there are other, bigger, bolder versions of this experience that Hexen II has inspired, and while this may have inspired quite a few, it hasn’t aged as well as its predecessors.

Next up: we close off the Thoughts On series of Heretic/Hexen games with Heretic II. And if Hexen II was a different experience in order to differentiate itself as a unique series, Heretic II goes above and beyond to set itself apart....for better and for worse.
