astronomy is taught poorly.
i know from experience that there are a lot of you out there that were, or are, interested in learning about space and astronomy, but never did because it seemed to technical or complex or difficult etc
by the end of this post i hope to subvert that expectation completely.
it seems complex, because in most cases it isn't taught right. it isn't even *thought about* right.
to sum it up, basic astronomy is essentially learning about the motions and bodies of the universe, and how to observe them, but via a very specific perspective. the perspective of earth.
the first very basic idea you need to know to understand the rest, is a few different scales of physical space:
so the first and smallest scale is the earth-moon system, along with anything in earth's orbit. this scale is relatively small, only taking a couple days to get to the moon with our current rockets. everything manmade that directly orbits earth is many times closer than that even, more comparable to how high a plane is flying than to the moon.
now as we go outside this scale, essentially everything gets a LOT bigger. there isn't anything after the earth-moon system for a very, very long distance in all directions.
the next scale is the solar system itself, centered of course on the sun. on this scale, traveling anywhere here (say, from the earth-moon system to another planet like mars or jupiter) takes months at the shortest to *years* at the longest. it is the primary scale of stuff that actually moves around relatively quickly.
bear with me here, since there's one more scale:
our galaxy. just as earth isn't the center of the solar system, our solar system isn't the center of the galaxy. this scale is unthinkably larger than the first two, as a galaxy is basically a large collection of solar systems all orbiting a huge black hole, and the distance from our star to the next would take roughly 200,000 years to travel with our current rockets.
this all seems somewhat unrelated, and maybe you already knew this; maybe not. either way, it's essential for the next step, which is: motions
(this next paragraph is called E1 for further reference. you do not need to know what that means yet, just keep it in mind)
oh wait and one little thing i gotta get out of the way here before motions: because of gravity and some more technical stuff i won't bother explaining here, all the main bodies of the solar system orbit the sun on the same almost 2d plane, just like a flat disc. same for all the solar systems orbiting the galactic center (big black hole), hence why galaxies are shaped like flat discs usually too. in both cases we're effectively inside the disc going through/around it. this'll be important in a little bit.
learning the different and separate motions of individual bodies are the key concept of astronomy.
everything in the universe is moving, all the time.
there are 2 main motions you're going to learn here, you probably think you know about these, and you might, but maybe not as much as you think.
motion 1: the earth itself is rotating, one rotation is 24 hours. this is a pretty basic motion, and is responsible for the day and night cycle. you probably already know about this one, or at least i hope you do.
but since we're *on* the thing that's rotating, it looks like everything else is rotating. now is a good time to introduce to you to a very important concept here:
apparent motion
apparent motion is essentially when you're on the thing that's moving, and it looks like something or everything else is moving. it's like a fake motion. being able to distinguish between these motions, is imo the core concept of learning astronomy.
so yea back to earth, we're on it and it's moving, but it looks like everything else is. so instead of the sun rising, we're effectively rotating to face it. you can probably see how this can get annoying to phrase right, so from now on if i'm referring to apparent motion i'll say that or put it in quotes.
motion 2: the actual physical (not apparent; real bodies physically moving in space) motion of bodies in our solar system.
to start with a basic one, earth itself goes around the sun once every 365 days/1 year. all the other planets have their own specific amounts of time they take to go around, but we won't discuss all that now since specific numbers and stuff aren't necessary.
the main point i'm getting to here though, is that: there is no important motion happening *anywhere outside of the entire solar system*. yes of course technically there is a lot of motion, but none that we can easily see from earth or in a period of time less than like thousands of years.
the only REAL physical movement you need to care about in astronomy, happens entirely within the solar system, and is predominantly contained to like a dozen or less main bodies. that's it.
and this movement as i said is specifically bodies orbiting the sun, and is on a timescale of usually weeks at the very least to years at the longer end. so a pretty long timescale.
everything outside of the solar system, we can basically just label as competely "fixed" as far as basic astronomy is concerned.
but alright back to that apparent motion, because that's the really important stuff.
as earth rotates, everything seems to move. you know this as the sunrise and sunset etc, but also it applies to those fixed stars that make up the rest of the galaxy. once the sun sets, you see stars; stars that, over the course of the night, will all "move" at the same speed the sun goes across the sky, the speed at which earth rotates. this apparent motion is *way* more visible and quick than most people think. maybe it isn't visible to the eye, but if you take a picture of the sky and one minute take another, the stars will have noticeably "moved"!
now i think you already see how this segues into actual practical astronomy: over the course of one night, you'll see a very different sky with notable astronomical objects rising and setting at various times throughout the night. one star might be rising a few hours after sunset, and set a few hours after sunrise, while another might be setting halfway through the night, etc
now while still in the context of practical astronomy, let's move back to motion 2.
everything in fixed space (outside of the solar system) that's in the direction of the sun, is essentially invisible to us, since we'd be seeing it in the daylight sky. so as the earth makes its way around the sun throughout the year, for parts of the year different areas of space that appear to be (from earth's perspective) behind and near the sun (or generally just in our sky at the same time as the sun) aren't visible. now since the earth takes an entire year to go around, this motion happens far, far slower than the nightly earth rotation.
instead of tracking or measuring this through direct noticeable motion, it's shown by what time a select star or object would rise at for multiple consecutive nights. so say Star A rises at 8:45pm on monday night, on tuesday night it'll rise at like 8:43pm and on wednesday at 8:41pm and so on. this movement is just too slow and unnoticeable to be really seen throughout one night, especially when motion 1 is at play.
one thing i really want to emphasize, this is the crux of understanding the entire thing:
motion 1 and motion 2 are both at play, all the time. from earth everything is moving both Physically and apparently because of earth's rotation.
i would say the one trickiest part of all this is really wrapping your head around both of these, and being able to distinguish them from each other.
now before we get to the end, i want to briefly explain how the planets fit into the practical astronomy context
and to do that i need to even more briefly explain the ecliptic. remember that paragraph E1 at the beginning? (if not just scroll up until you see it)
that flat plane that all the planets go around the sun on, is called the ecliptic. and since we're also a planet on that plane (think of the disc analogy again, from the side a disc looks like a line) all the other planets appear in earth's sky along an imaginary line (the moon and sun also appear to be along this line, hence why eclipses happen, and hence the name)
also if you've heard the term zodiac, these are just the 12 star constellations that ended up being along that line from our perspective, which the sun, moon and all the planets end up (appearing) to go move along
ok the detour is over, so back to the planets
venus and mercury are closer to the sun than earth, and as such will never appear to be very far from the sun (from earth's perspective). both are seen either right after sunset, or right before sunrise depending on the time of year.
mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune appear to move along the ecliptic, throughout the entire sky every year. this means that throughout the year they'll appear to get closer and pass by or behind the sun (during these months you can't really see them) and in the opposite months they'll be directly opposite the sun (from earth's perspective; imagine three dots in a line, the middle one is earth and the two on the left and right are (planet name) and the sun)
hence the term "(planet name) opposition", for the day of the year that said planet is opposite the sun (again, relative to earth)
and the last two terms to know before we finish, are: conjunction, and occultation
since as we said before, every main body in the solar system moves along the ecliptic, they're bound to eventually pass near/by/behind each other quite often (from EARTH'S PERSPECTIVE. want to make that clear. they are not actually near each other in real space, it just looks that way from earth)
when two bodies appear to pass closely near each other it's called a conjunction, and when one larger body (usually the moon) passes completely in front of another and blocks it, that's called an occultation
when the bodies are the same apparent size of course, like the sun and moon, it's called an eclipse
these conjunctions happen quite frequently, i'd say on average there's some kind of conjunction once per month. especially since the moon appears to go all the way around the ecliptic roughly once per month
i haven't said much about the moon, since there's enough material there for a second smaller post i may make eventually, but just know that it appears to move along the ecliptic like the other bright planets and does so quickly, roughly once a month
hopefully you learned something or a few things from this post, i tried to explain it in an easy-to-understand way, geared towards someone that essentially doesn't know anything about the subject. and if you did already, maybe you learned a bit more about it.
anyways, this has been a long one but worth it in the end i think. thanks for reading!
