“i still have your pocket watch ,
my dear father . like me ,
it is broken , but stubborn ,
and still keeps going .” —Arno
To his father in the Abstergo Entertainment Employee Handbook.
∙ Arno’s pocket watch is composed of workings both outer and inner. From the red velvet protecting the glass to the gears that continue to shift and make the clock tick. In letters to his father, Arno refers to himself as the watch, using words like “broken” and “stubborn.” After it had fallen from his hands in the Palace of Versailles, it continued to function. This mirrors a human experience of a traumatic event: still operational but damaged.
To better understand Arno and his struggle with time, let's break down the pieces of a pocket w𝘢̼𝘵̼𝘤̼𝘩̼.
Dial: The dial, also known as the face, is where the time is displayed. It typically includes hour markers, minute markers, and sometimes additional complications such as a date window or a small seconds sub-dial. Hands: The hands are the moving indicators on the dial that points to the current time. There are usually three hands: an hour hand, a minute hand, and a seconds hand. Crystal: The crystal is a transparent cover that protects the dial and hands. It can be made of various materials such as mineral glass, synthetic sapphire, or acrylic. Case: The case is the outer shell of the pocket watch that houses all the internal components. It is typically made of metal, such as gold, silver, or stainless steel, and can have various designs and finishes. Movement: The movement is the heart of the pocket watch. It consists of the mechanical mechanism that drives the hands and keeps time. There are different types of movements, including manual wind, automatic, and quartz. Crown: The crown is a small knob on the side of the case that is used to set the time and wind the watch. It is typically located at the 3 o’clock position. Bezel: The bezel is the ring that surrounds the dial and holds the crystal in place. It can be fixed or rotating, depending on the design of the pocket watch. Chain: The chain is a decorative accessory that is attached to the pocket watch and is used to secure it to a garment or belt loop. It can be made of various materials, such as metal or leather.
The components of Arno can be likened to the parts of a watch—not as mechanical pieces, but as representations of his psyche, emotions, and actions. Arno refers to himself as the watch, so examining him in this context helps us understand his character.
For the dial, we’ll consider Arno as the ticking time bomb when he is intoxicated. (I love him, but I’m going to be a little mean.) - His movements (seconds) are usually quick. He joins the Assassins’ cause with only two thoughts in mind: avenging François De La Serre and cutting to the chase. The hands represent Élise (hour), François (minute), and himself (seconds). - As the hands revolve around the dial, so do Élise and François, who are pivotal to Arno’s development and growth. These two people occupy his mind continuously, counting down the seconds of Arno’s life. He helps Élise (hour) in her quest to avenge her father (minutes). The crystal represents Arno’s heart. - When it first broke, it shattered in the Palace of Versailles, clattering to the ground. The watch remains broken even through François’ passing and is only repaired after Élise’s death. His heartache begins to mend with the crystal, even if it takes centuries. The case is represented by Charles Dorian, François De La Serre, and Pierre Bellec, as well as Arno’s metaphorical shell. - The case bears the emblem of the Creed. Each father figure or mentor in Arno’s life is protective. Charles is his biological father, François is his surrogate father, and Bellec is his mentor. All wish to protect Arno. Arno’s metaphorical casing represents his tendency to shut down emotionally, retreating into himself to drink away his sorrows and distancing himself from those he has hurt—whether physically or mentally, intentionally or otherwise.
Movement is linked to Élise and Arno’s heart (motives and intentions). - Arno’s focus on avenging De La Serre, is deeply driven by his feelings for Élise. From childhood, he has been awestruck by and devoted to both of them, using them as his motivation to find Germain. The Crown. The Creed and Templar Order. The Templar order set the stage for the hands to move around the dial. It was already predestined that Elise would follow in her father's footsteps. Similarly, since Arno’s father was an assassin, it was expected that he too would continue the legacy left for him. The Bezel is Elise. Elise has grown up with Arno and has seen his hardships firsthand - being the only person able to pull him back from his casing and hold him together. In losing Elise, his new Bezel is her final written words, still keeping him up and attentive. The chain is Arno himself. After enduring each hardship and loss, Arno is the only one who can hold and care for himself. The entirety of the pocket watch represents both those around him and himself; when they are no longer present, their memories keep time moving forward and help him continue for their sake. He achieves this by repairing the crystal.
∙ Arno's watch remains a treasured gift from his father. While waiting for Charles’ return, Arno glances at the watch, hearing its ticking in response. As he approaches his lifeless body, the watch falls from his hand as he freezes in shock — it continues to click, but to Arno, it sounds like a piano underwater. For him, time has also stopped.
∙ As time continues to pass, we see Arno again, older and still playfully clinging to his watch. He recklessly gambles it away and loses it, his loss of self when intoxicated.
∙ At the end of the main game, Arno's watch is repaired, symbolizing his acceptance that time is short and that he cannot hold onto it forever. He was mending his heart just like the glass. Slowly from the grief that surrounds him.
∙ In "Dead Kings," the watch shows no signs of wear as it remains tucked away in his pocket, sheltered from the temperamental aggressors. Time seems to move faster now as Arno's journey to Egypt is hurried — there is no room to savor memories, such as those of Elise, whose ghost serves as a constant reminder. Not until Leon becomes a bezel for him, the same as Elise.

Alexandre Chasten (OC; The Wildest Woe)
The main character and protagonist for my AC Unity story The Wildest Woe.
Born: January 24th, 1773
Physical Description: He stands around 174 cm, with a mess of tight dark curls and sharp blue eyes. He’s often said to be a spitting image of his father, especially as he gets older. He’s very rarely seen without being put together, finding that he puts a good deal of worth on his physical appearance that people see. His main coat is a brown coat with green lapels and cuffs and red/gold trimming. After his first encounter with the British Templars, he breaks his nose and it never fully heals, resulting in his nose being dented for the rest of his life. He also has a scar on his brow that’s mostly hidden. On his body, he has a scar from a bullet wound that he receives when he’s 29 on his left shoulder.
Background: Alexandre was born to Jehan and Louise Chasten, Assassins belonging to the French Brotherhood. He spent the first few years of his life in a mix of his parent’s care and in the communal care of the Brotherhood. When he was two his brother Théodore was born. The Chastens made their inhabitance of a modest white brick house in the Saint-Louis area of Paris, just over the bridge from the Île de la Cité that Jehan kept funded through connections and favors. When he was five, his mother died at the hands of the Templars and his father was left in grief until he remembered his children. The strain for the first few months after Louise’s death left Alexandre in a weird situation and he became reclusive without her around. This stigma and condition stayed with him for long after her death and the ‘reconciliation’ his father attempted to provide, though he attempted to make up for it by working for his father’s attention and approval; this would lead to his life long battle with making his father proud. He also began to focus on Théodore more for company and to look after him while Jehan attempted to recover.
When he was seven his father told him about the Assassin-Templar war and began his training. The fervent ideology of his father and the knowledge that the Templars killed his mother fueled Alexandre’s thoughts at a young age and led to his focus on the Creed above all else. He would eventually begin training not long after and come to know the Brotherhood and get familiar with his future. When he was fifteen and his brother was thirteen, their father was killed on a mission as their mother was. Alexandre took over the training and care of his brother, inherited his father’s Hidden Blade, and the Council once again decided they would be communally raised. The father of Celeste Touchard, a childhood friend and Assassin trainee as well, would become his mentor in place of his father and help to raise them.
Later in life, he would become embroiled in a conflict with Templar agents who wished to gain their foothold again in a post-revolutionary France, alongside his brother, Celeste, and Arno Dorian.
Personality: Aside from some stunted difficulty with human connections, he held high empathy and held a vast reserve of compassion in general, which led to a bit of difficulty with his first few times on an assassination mission; he’d have to learn to create a “persona” to use when assassinating. He felt very much for those in need and would try and help even if it wasn’t possible. However, he still showed a strong disdain and anger towards Templars, seeing them as just part of a collective of different ideologies that were spreading injustice towards those undeserving of it. He also formed silent connections, often after spending time with a person and then deeming them a friend after a good deal of time even if he didn’t outwardly note it; he assumed it was just understood.
His biggest flaw was his internalized homophobia and self-worth issues, seeing himself as imperfect and not on the same level as what his father would want. To keep his father proud, he would also attempt to mentor his younger brother and educate him in the way of the Creed, but would end up pushing him away for a very long time as he took the role of a father, and not as the older brother.

You know when you play a game and have the Urge™ to do something extra even though the game itself won't acknowledge it at all, and it would affect absolutely nil?
I do this all the time. So far, my favourites include:
Jumping off ridiculously high places to assassinate before Air Assassination was a thing, aka the Eagle Strike (the OG Assassin's Creed)
Standing uncomfortably close to Napoleon Bonaparte every time he appears. Like inches from his face, no sense of personal space, close. (AC Unity)
Laying the more honourable foes to rest. There's free burial ground west of Letopolis, and major cities tend to have a wabet/mummification house. Note that Phylakes are too tall to fit common sarcophagi (AC Origins)
Never giving Shane or Pam any beer (Stardew Valley)
Always parking vehicles in proper locations and with correct alignment. Also, obeying red lights. Obviously some missions make this impossible (Watch_Dogs)
Killing Kai Leng with only the OmniBlade. In his first encounter, defeating him only by spamming Overload (Mass Effect 3)
Putting unconscious enemies in funny positions, usually looking as if they just dozed off on a nearby chair/sofa/mattress (Dishonored, also DX: Human Revolution)
#gaming#mass effect#assassin's creed#stardew valley#dishonored#deus ex: human revolution#watch_dogs#there's gotta be more of these Extra things i just don't remember them right now#but i usually remember once it's time to do the thing

Peaceful Floyd Protesters Form Human Barricade to Protect White House Police
As protesters across the United States express their anger over the death of George Floyd, in many cases devolving into rioting and looting, one group of protesters in Washington DC locked hands and stood before White House police forming a human barricade to protect the officers.
In video footage from protests in Washington DC, protesters locked hands and formed a human barricade before White House police officers, protecting them from angry protesters who in turn criticized them for standing with the police.
Two women can be seen in the video, one wearing a red t-shirt that states “Make Racism Wrong Again,” the other woman’s shirt reads “BLACK – WHITE – HUMAN,” appearing to promote a message of unity. As the women, along with other protestors, lock hands and stand with their backs to the police, other protesters angered by their actions begin to question their motivation.
“This is good,” says one woman referring to the protests, “but y’all got other ways to do it too, y’all can write to Congress…” another woman cuts her off shouting “it don’t work, we all did that, it don’t work, I signed people up for that, it don’t work.”
In the video, one man shouts at the woman in the red t-shirt “we here to make a point to show that this shit is not ok!” The woman replies “it’s not going to bring George Floyd back,” before later adding “this is not the answer,” referring to the violent protests.

And that, people, is how you gain the respect of the people you are addressing. I said it before - conservatives do not mind joining a righteous protest against government overreach and abuse of power. But these things have been monopolized by politicians and race baiters eager for power, wealth and attention for decades. We ain't playing that game.

Yup. And that's why the civil rights protests MLK led in Alabama were successful and inspired people: The marchers walked down streets where Jim Crow supporters with rifles looked-on, but although they were in danger, they carried no weapons or sticks, and refused to harm any property or people.
When you are willing to put your own safety and life on the line to stand for something, it draws a lot more respect that when you go bust, burn, brutalize, and then take home some looted liquor and video games.

Of the two protesting factions, it's easy to see which one is interested in justice for George Floyd and bettering the cause of minorities, and which is only interested in destruction and anarchy. They grew up as privileged kids but they're at war with reason and civility. To them it's just another video game, just on a larger stage and with better graphics.

Any human being can see what happened to George was wrong. Cuff him put him in the car and take him down to the station. Nothing else was required.
People are right to be angry - not white or black - people of all sorts. This is like the FBI attacking a 33 year veteran general. Wrong is wrong and the abuse of power must stop.

Smells like a setup. A cop kneeling on the neck of a guy he worked with for years and didn’t try to prevent people from filming him doing it? Knowing it would go viral?

It got weirder when I read on a Minneapolis News station page that Chauvin and Floyd both worked security at a some dance club (at the same time). The owner though says she doesn't know if they knew each other because they had a lot of security people.
I hope this is well investigated. There may be more to it than is on video.

pepebob3 GM Burns•6 hours ago
Some whispering going on that both Floyd And Chauvin were in on the counterfeit scam. Some even saying that the other 3 officers, who did Nothing to help Mr. Floyd, are also involved which is the real reason he was killed. Not sure I believe that, but at this point, who knows. One thing I am sure of is the fact that these riots are too well put together to be happenstance.
______________________________________________________
GMBurns pepebob3 • 5 hours agoI just checked around. Forbes has an interesting article:
Chauvin was there for 1r 17 years, but Floyd only worked there about twelve times during ONE year (2019) while Chauvin was. Chauvin, outside, while Floyd was inside, and apparently it is a big building Oooops WAS a big building...it burned down Thursday night - I just saw that.https://www.forbes.com/site...Here is the burned out club:
https://ruptly.tv/es/videos...
This is getting deep. I would say it is possible they didn't really know each other...BUT there were people who knew both of them well enough, like the owner of the restaurant, a Ms. Maya Santamaria. The fire started in the restaurant.
I really hope that Minneapolis police aren't as messy as the FBI, to be polite. However, don't be too sure about riots being pre-planned. That would mean letting too many people know something. They can put riots together fast when the news is hot.No conclusions for me, but lots and lots of loose ends.
No conclusions for me, but lots and lots of loose ends.
________________________________________________
pepebob3 GMBurns • 3 hours agoI suspect we will never learn the truth.
So many times horrible things happen, such as the Vegas shootings, Epstein murder, Hillary-Everything she has done, etc. get quickly taken off the front pages.
They are still hiding the JFK assassination details 50+ years later! If the powers that be want it covered up it will be. Initial starting of the riots were probably home grown, but Sourass and Obama, and his ilk, have been known to support financially, give out pre-made signs, and buses people in when it suits their agenda.
A racial civil war is something that the never Trumpers desperately want. To the globalists chaos is the best way to affect the change they want. Sadly our country seems to have an over abundance of people willing to help them. Add incompetent and corrupt mayors, governors, and Congress and it's a combination for disaster.
The only good thing that will come out of all this will be the many new citizens who realize their need to buy a gun and learn how to use it. Without the right to defend ourselves and loved ones we will become like Venezuela who banned private gun ownership in 2012-now look at it. The only ones with guns are the criminals and the government, frequently one and the same.

Wow, I hadn't thought of that angle. I see that a Minneapolis dance club says both Chauvin and Floyd worked security at there. One other source said they were both there during two years. And I saw no sign from either that they knew each other. If I were writing a Game of Thrones script, it would have it that Mr. Floyd thought his scene had a different ending. This is crazy of course, but I hope they definitely check everything thoroughly. If any part of any of these angles has anything to them, it could mean that...oh yeah, maybe Mr Chauvin has a surprise coming too. That would be easier to explain than Chauvin just looking straight at the camera, knowing it's a camera, as he kills the guy, which was very, very strange.
_____________________________________________________
Jessie Brader Brat_bart • 7 hours ago
I was thinking of that a lot actually...I think there's two factors there:
1. I don't think it was necessarily a race issue and I'm going to continue thinking that until hard evidence to the contrary. In my experience true actual racism/hate/bigotry is not something you miss or feel uncertain of it's occurence. No I think chauvin was simply a cold, hard person who could gave been just as easily been kneeling on a stoop let alone another human being. He had no emotion in that video save maybe annoyance. His face makes it clear he has no respect or reverence for human life, regardless of sex, Creed, race etc.
2. With those 18 disciplinary on his jacket...it would stand to reason he had a sense of being untouchable, at least to a degree. He may have been disciplined or suspended in the past but never outright fired until now obviously. So I'd think pure arrogance could explain his lack of concern over the video.
Especially considering his original report which was such a blatant misrepresentation it leaves me with the conclusion that this guy felt he'd gotten away with stuff before, he will again, worst case scenario he might get suspension etc. Plus anyone with that made incidence throughout their career, it's fairly likely there were many more instances of misconduct we DONT know about. Reading his initial report...well let's just say without the video he very well may hace gotten away with it. They didn't even seem to question his or his fellow officers accounts as suspect until the video that civilian put out there.

OPINION: That’s great news to hear! Everyone Police Offer is by far, not bad at all. Thousands of people in this country can count their blessings that we do have great Policy Officers in this country. If not, many would have lost their lives to ‘thugs’ in the streets that have the same skin color and doing bodily harm to some in their own neighborhoods.
People need to stop and think about different situations before you jump on board of all the ‘bad actors’ that’s causing more problems in this country.
You better think first before you react!
A word of wisdom and advise!

CUSTOM GAME ENGINES: A Small Study A couple of weeks ago I played (and finished) A Plague Tale, a game by Asobo Studio. I was really captivated by the game, not only by the beautiful graphics but also by the story and the locations in the game. I decided to investigate a bit about the game tech and I was surprised to see it was developed with a custom engine by a relatively small studio. I know there are some companies using custom engines but it's very difficult to find a detailed market study with that kind of information curated and updated. So this article. Nowadays lots of companies choose engines like Unreal or Unity for their games (or that's what lot of people think) because developing a custom AAA-level engine requires lots of resources, so, I decided to list here some of the most popular custom engines with the team-sizes and notable titles released with those engines. Most of the engines listed here have been developed along the years with multiple iterations and multiple videogames, those engines have gone through several versions or even complete (or semi-complete) rewrites from scratch, with a consequent engine name change. Also, important to note, most of those engines use numerous middleware for specific functionalities (Platform, Physics, Network, Vegetation, UI, Rendering, Audio...). *NOTE: I tried to be as much accurate as possible with the information about the employees count (I checked the companies websites, Wikipedia or company LinkedIn) but take it with a grain of salt (some employees numbers could not be up to date). The BIG Companies *From left to right: Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Final Fantasy XV, Red Dead Redemption 2 Below list is for very big corporations, sometimes with complex corporate structures with several divisions (not only focused on videogames) and various studios/subsidiaries developing games. Some of them work with multiple engines, not only custom ones but also licensed ones. Company Employees Studios Engine(s) Notable Games Activision/Blizzard ~9200 ~9 custom engine(s) Call of Duty series, Overwatch, Starcraft II Electronic Arts ~9300 ~36 Frostbite 3 Star Wars Battlefront II, Anthem, Battlefield 1/V, FIFA 20, Need for Speed series Ubisoft ~16000 ~54 AnvilNext 2.0 Assassin's Creed series Disrupt engine Watch Dogs series UbiArt Framework Rayman Legends, Child of Light, Valiant Hearts Snowdrop Tom Clancy's The Division 2, The Settlers Dunia (CryEngine-based) FarCry series Silex (Anvil-based) Ghost Recon Wildlands LEAD engine Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series Dunia-based The Crew Capcom +2800 ~15 MT Framework Monster Hunter: World RE Engine Resident Evil 7, Devil May Cry 5, RE2:Remake, RE3:Remake Konami +10000 ~30 Fox Engine Pro Evolution Soccer series, Metal Gear Solid V Square Enix +4600 ~18 Luminous Studio Final Fantasy XV Nintendo +6100 ~8 custom engine(s) Zelda: BOTW, Mario Odyssey Riot Games ~2500 ~3 custom engine League of Legends Rockstar +2000 ~9 RAGE engine GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 CD Projekt +1100 ~4 REDEngine 3 The Witcher 3 Epic +1000 ~11 Unreal Engine 4 Fortnite Usually those companies invest in custom engines to have full control over the technology and also avoid the revenue cut imposed by the licensed engines. Despite that fact, there are some big companies that in the latest years have chosen Unreal Engine for their productions, the most notable cases are: Capcom is using Unreal for the new Street Fighter IV/V titles. Bandai Namco latest big hits are using Unreal: Jump Force, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Tales of Arise. Square Enix also moved to Unreal for several new titles: Dragon Quest XI, Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII Remake It's interesting to see that those big three are Japanesse companies, I wonder if that's maybe a market trend for Japan. Also to note, the chinesse holding Tencent owns 40% of Epic Games, I bet it has some influence in the Asian market. Middle-size Studios *From left to right: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Uncharted 4, A Plague Tale Here we have the medium-small companies that decided to create their custom technology for their titles. The number of employees could be a nice reference to consider because a custom game engine is usually developed in-house (I mean, not outsourced) but note that some of those companies could have a big number of people due to in-house artist/audio teams, while other companies out-source those parts of the development. It would be really nice to know how many engineers are working on the engine division for each company, I'm sure there would be some big surprises, probably by the low number of engineers working in the engine and tools! Also interesting to know more info about the tooling included with those engines, it's really difficult to have access to that kind of information. Engines tooling is usually a hidden-secret (beside some GDC presentations or some quick showcase videos). *From left to right: Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Death Stranding Company Employees Engine Notable Games Creative Assembly +650 Warscape Engine Total War series Bungie ~600 Tiger Engine Destiny series Infinity Ward +500 IW 7.0 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Eidos-Montréal ~500 Dawn Engine (Glacier2-based) Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Paradox Interactive +400 Clausewitz Engine Imperator: Rome Bethesda ~400 Creation Engine Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76 Valve Corp. ~360 Source 2 Dota 2, Half-Life: Alyx Crystal Dynamics ~350 Foundation Engine Rise/Shadow of the Tomb Raider Avalanche Studios ~320 Apex engine Just Cause series, Renegade Ops, Mad Max, RAGE 2 Naughty Dog +300 Naughty Dog Game Engine Uncharted series, Last of Us Rebellion Developments ~300 Asura engine Alien vs. Predator series, Sniper Elite series Techland ~300 Chrome Engine 6 Dying Light Crytek ~290 CryEngine V The Climb, Hunt:Showdown From Software +280 Dark Souls engine Bloodborne, Dark Souls III, Sekiro Remedy +250 Northlight Engine Quantum Break, Control Guerrilla Games +250 Decima Killzone Shadow Fall, Until Dawn, Horizon Zero Dawn Platinum Games ~250 Platinum Engine NieR Automata, Bayonetta, Vanquish Santa Monica Studio +200 custom engine God Of War series id Software +200 idTech 6/7 Doom, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein series Sucker Punch +200 custom engine Infamous Second Son, Ghost of Tsushima? Kojima Productions use Decima engine, developed by Guerrilla Games, for Death Stranding, previously they used Fox Engine for Metal Gear Solid V. Media Molecule latest game/engine (Dreams) seems to have been developed by only ~15 coders, amazing! Companies targeting one single platform, usually have less restrictions and can push the limits of that platform. Unfortunately, that's a luxury that most companies can not afford. Asobo Studio, the company that originated this market study is not that small... but, like other companies, they seem to work in multiple titles in parallel. Very nice to see that some of the engines have entries in the Wikipedia with some details and titles released, it should be a must. Small-size Studios (Indie Studios) *From left to right: The Witness, No Man's Sky, X-Morph Defense Here we have some really small studios that also choose to develop a custom engine for their games. Note that most of those engines rely on other libraries/frameworks for certain parts of the game, the common choices we find are SDL (cross-platform graphics/input), OGRE (rendering engine), MonoGame (cross-platform game framework, also relyes on SDL, SharpDX, OpenTK, OpenAL-Soft...). One question many people could ask is, what parts of the engine are actually coded by the developers? Well, it depends, but usually coders take care of the screen-manager, entities-manager and content-manager as well as the wrappers/interfaces to the external libraries. Second question, what parts of the engine usually rely on external libraries/middleware? It also depends on the company resources but usually audio-system, physics, rendering, networking, ui-system, terrain-system, vegetation-system and some other pieces. *From left to right: Factorio, Thimbleweed Park, Owlboy On the following list (and the next one below) I added the publishing date (only +2012) and the link to Steam for all the games... there are not many games with custom engine from small studios out there and I think they deserve to be recognized and supported. Company Employees Engine Notable Games Shiro Games ~30 Heaps.io Northgard (2018), Evoland (2013), Evoland II (2015) Hello Games ~25 No Man's Sky Engine No Man's Sky (2016) Frictional Games ~25 HPL engine SOMA (2015), Amnesia series DrinkBox Studios ~25 custom engine Guacamelee (2013), Guacamelee! 2 (2018), Severed (2016) Supergiant Games ~20 MonoGame-based Hades (2019), Pyre (2017), Transistor (2014) Wube Software ~20 Allegro/SDL-based Factorio (2019) Chucklefish ~20 Halley Engine Wargroove (2019), Starbound (2016) Ronimo Games ~17 RoniTech Engine (SDL) Awesomenauts (2017) Runic Games ~17 OGRE-based Hob (2017), Tochlight II (2012) Lab Zero Games ~17 Z-Engine Indivisible (2019), Skullgirls (2013) Introversion Software ~14 SystemIV (SDL) Prison Architect (2015) Exor Studios ~14 OGRE-based Schmetterling The Riftbreaker (2020), X-Morph: Defense (2017) Tribute Games ~11 MonoGame-based Flinthook (2017), Mercenary Kings (2014) Thekla Inc. Hello Games is a very small studio considering the size of No Man's Sky and that they use a custom engine. Really impressive! Runic Games was dissolved in November 2017, the founders created Double Damage, now they are working on Echtra Games on Torchlight III. Rodrigo Braz Monteiro, Chucklefish CTO, is the person in charge of Halley engine, actually the engine is open-source! In most of those studios the people in charge of creating the game engine it's only 1-3 persons! Lo-fi Games was a one-man team (Chris Hunt) for more than 6 years! Some of the games in this list took +5 years of development! Not many games... a couple of hits per year... One-man custom engines *From left to right: Stardew Valley, ScourgeBringer, Eagle Island Finally, the list of the heroes. Games developed by 1-2 people with custom game engines, engines mostly coded by one person! Respect. Creating an engine and a game from scratch to the point of publishing it is an extraordinary accomplishment, not many people in the world is ready for that. Almost all of them are 2D games, usually with very small budgets and developed along multiple years. Congratulations to the developers! *From left to right: Axiom Verge, Ghost 1.0, Remnants of Naezith Some observations from this list: Some of those teams are formed by 1-2 people but probably grew at some point and/or outsourced some parts of the development (art, audio...). Usually the publisher also helps with some resources (localization, marketing...). Omar Cornut from Lizardcube is the main programmer for Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap engine and also the developer of Dear ImGui, a free and open-source immediate-mode gui library used by lots of AAA custom engines. Ben Fiquet from Lizardcube is also the main artist for Streets of Rage 4, the custom engine of Guard Crush Games is written by Cyrille Lagarigue. Marc Flury programmed Thumper game engine rejecting the OOP paradigm in favor of a procedural programming approach. Christian Whitehead is the creator of Star Engine used in Sonic Mania but Headcannon (Simon Thomley) and PagodaWest Games (Jared Kasl and Tom Fry) were also involved in the development of the game. Some of the games in this list took +5 years of development! Not many games... a couple of hits per year... There are some other remarkable games using custom engines (usually XNA/MonoGame) that worth mentioning: Minecraft (2011), Braid (2009), Super Meat Boy (2010), Terraria (2011), Dustforce (2012), Sword and Sorcery EP (2012), FEZ (2013), Dust: An Elysian Tail (2013), Rogue Legacy (2013), Dyad (2012), SpaceChem (2013). Conclusions I'll start saying I'm biased, I'm really passionate about videogames-making technologies and I admire custom engines and game-making tools. I also contributed to custom engines ecosystem with my grain of salt: raylib and several game-making tools. I prefer a custom engine over a licensed one, I consider that the extra amount of effort put into the product usually translates into some specific great mechanic or some amazing in-game details. Said that, I must admit that creating a custom engine is a big endeavour and not many people are ready for that. I recognize Unity (and Unreal to less extend) have really democratized videogames development, lots of small-medium size companies can use Unity today to develop games quicly and put them on the market, sometimes with very low budgets... But, still, lots of big companies prefer to rely on their own custom technologies. From my gamedev-teacher perspective, I think students must learn how engines work internally with as much detail as possible. Relying only on engines like Unity/Unreal for education to allow students develop eye-candy project in short-time is not the way to go. At the end of the day, someone has to write the engine and the tools! NOTE: Feedback and improvements are welcome! :)

I've re-blogged to include my answers!
1) Pixie
2) 29
3) Female / She/Her
4) DM me, xD
Otome Questions
1) Hideki Ishigami, probably.
2) Her Love in the Force / My Sweet Bodyguard
3) Cold-Hearted but is actually a huge softie and romantic, doesn't put "my" feelings in jeopardy. I like the ones who like to cuddle, I guess.
4) Both, probably. I'd probably steer more toward the good guy, but I'm not against Baba or Soryu type characters, haha.
5) I like them as they are, quirks and like... negative aspects too!
6) Both? Ehh, I prefer fan fiction for the content, I guess. I 'unno, haha!
7) I'd like to see the other guys from MSB in HLITF from the perspective of a budding detective as well though.
8) Uhh, Samejima from KBTBB probably.
9) Mm... Baba in terms of how romantic he is, but probably also ... Kyo Aizawa from BUM because of his quiet personality, I don't think it'd be awkward because I don't like small talk either. Either him or Akiyoshi Zaizen, or Ayame Suo from OTBS, or Daichi Katsuragi because I prefer to be looked after but being on even playing field, rather than looking after someone else.
(I abhor the idea of looking after an over-grown man-child, staying at home and raising the kids and waiting for the caveman to come home every day after work, or going out to work and said caveman does nothing to help out around the house). I still think Ishigami still fits though tbh.
Books/Games/Music/Movies Questions
1) Probably my phone, provided this includes an infinite amount of charge.
2) Umm, I don't think I've watched a movie for months, I think it was the Maze Runner: Death Cure. I usually watch K-Dramas instead, haha. xD
3) Mm... I don't really have one, T.V series, probably Shadowhunters, Maze Runner series maybe for movies? I tend to watch T.V series / Netflix, tbh.
4) Not really, I cry when someone else is crying, I'm an emotion leech, I'm the same with otome novels as well tbh. It's bad.
5) I just noticed it's the same question, sorry about that!
6) “I was not a pet, not a doll, not an animal. I was a survivor, and I was strong. I would not be weak, or helpless again I would not, could not be broken. Tamed.” ― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury
and
“There are different kinds of darkness,” Rhys said. I kept my eyes shut. “There is the darkness that frightens, the darkness that soothes, the darkness that is restful.” I pictured each. “There is the darkness of lovers, and the darkness of assassins. It becomes what the bearer wishes it to be, needs it to be. It is not wholly bad or good.” ― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury
7) Empathy
8) Closer by RØZE
9) Band: I don't really have one, Genre: All sorts, I mostly have K-Pop though, I guess. Singer: RØZE.
10) Difficult, since I pretty much made my old Spotify account freak out and can't log into it on my phone anymore....). Buuut, in no particular order of preference:
Thief - Alexander Jean, Red Ribbon - Madilyn Bailey, What You're Made Of (feat. Kiesza) - Lindsey Stirling, Losing You - Wonho, Stronger - Gabrielle, Love Killa - Monsta X, Fireworks (I'm The One) - Ateez, gimme gimme - NCT127, Promise - Jimin (BTS), Knock Knock - ASTRO.
11) Who cares???
12) Skyrim (a few months ago)
13) Mm, either Assassins Creed: Unity (I stopped really playing them since AC3, but yano), Pokemon: Sword, I started on Shield, but never finished, oooorrr, The Last of Us: 2.
14) Legend of Legaia, an oldie, but a goodie (PS1).
15) A Court of Thorns and Roses series, I haven't read the latest book though.
16) A Court of Thorns and Roses, probably, that or Mortal Instruments, haha.
17) No, my kindle is basically Pandoras' Box of books, a lot I haven't read yet.
Random Questions
1) Do fishes also get thirsty? Admittedly, when I saw this question, I'm now I'm questioning everything.
2) Is Disney World a trap operated by a mouse? I've never been to Disney World, but I kind of feel like that's exactly what they don't want you to know. It's a genius galaxy brain plan, that no one else would have considered.
3) What do you think about banks having branches when money doesn’t grow on trees? What do you mean, money doesn't grow on trees? How do politicians find all the money in the world for things like Trident, and yet can't find money to fund nurses for the NHS? (I'm from the UK). Basically I'm now confused.
4) If the cream is already sour then why is there any expiration date on it? I...
5) At what point do "boy/girl bands" stop calling themselves as such? That is the question, but so true.
I won't tag anyone, but feel free to play!
I decided to make a tag, and hopefully get to know some people (I'm essentially ignoring all of my instincts to be anti-social to the point of being awkward.). Some are otome based, some book / music / movie / game based.
1) Name
2) Age (if you want to answer)
3) Gender / Pronouns
4) Discord? (if you dont want to make it public, then just say PM me!)
1) Who is your favourite otome character(s)?
2) What is your favourite title/game (feel free to list more than one if you want to!) ?
3) Go-to character personality?
4) Bad boy or good guy?
5) If you were to mix characters together, would you? or do you like them all, quirks and all?
6) Fan-Fiction or Smut?
7) Are there any titles / characters that make you wish the company explored a little further?
8) Do you wish there was a route for a specific character that doesn't have one?
9) Even though you have a favourite character, do you think there is a character that would fit you better to how you want to be treated, even if they had no money at all, or weren't super rich?
10) Feel free to add more questions if you think of any, but I've gone blank xD
This will probably be a little more chaotic, I just wrote what sprang to mind and got lazy about half way through about it being organised, sorry! Feel free to move the questions around if it bothers anyone and their OCD!
1) If you had to live your life with one item for the rest of your life, what would that be?
2) What was the last movie you watched?
3) All time favourite movie? or recommendations?
4) Do you have a go to movie for specific feelings, i.e when you want to have a cry, romance, etc?
5) What was the last movie you saw? either at the theatre or at home?
6) What quote(s) do you live by, or simply love?
7) Empathy or logic?
8) What song was last played on your phone/computer?
9) What’s your favourite band / genre and/or singer?
10) Top 10 songs you recommend?
11) Do you think wording (I forgot what the real word was xD - sorry!) matters, i.e ham burger vs beef burger, trash vs rubbish (basically asking if you care about the trivial details, or is it more of a ''as long as you know what I mean, who the eff cares"?
12) What was the last game you played?
13) Is there a game you really want to play, but haven't yet?
14) All time favourite game?
15) What was the last book you read?
16) Do you have any recommendations?
17) Do you have a list of favourite books?
Completely random questions now. Don't take these ones to seriously pls xD
1) Do fishes also get thirsty?
2) Is Disney World a trap operated by a mouse?
3) What do you think about banks having branches when money doesn’t grow on trees?
4) If the cream is already sour then why is there any expiration date on it?
5) At what point do "boy/girl bands" stop calling themselves as such?

Assassin’s creed modern au headcanons part 2
PART 2 OF THIS. I still have no idea of when part 2 of tCoI (the Child of Izanami) is coming, but the Unity one-shot will soon be published. So yeah, part 2 of the headcanons. The list is game IV to Syndicate, with Desmond has a bonus.
Edward
Formerly the proof that pirates still existed, now a grandfather that lives with his overworked son, angry grandson and probable future son-in-law.
He doesn’t care that he’s 81 and that we’re in the middle of the winter, he’s going out in short, sandals and t-shirt with shark prints on them. He’s still ripped, so it’s not that horrifying of an image, even if it makes Haytham go mad with worry.
He used to do parkour when he was young. He’s now too old to do that, but his legacy lives on with Connor, to who he gave his blue jacket.
He was formerly a sailor/smuggler/crook/pirate with a heart of gold (once took down a human selling ring because he has limits and this crossed every single one of them), but he was forced to retire after a career ending injury.
He had a lot of women in his life, but Haytham’s mother was the one he loved the most.
Haytham and his best friend Adewalé are literally the only ones to see just how Edward is actually a gigantic loser. The rest of their town thinks he’s either entertaining or awesome, most of the time somewhere between the two.
Shay
The weird friendly Irish psychologist/life coach that lives with Haytham because the whole Kenway family needs help. He also has a Tragic Past™.
HIS. FUCKING. TRENCHCOAT. He never takes the damn thing off unless he’s sleeping, in his apartment (since he practically lives in the Kenway house now, he doesn’t go to his apartment that much anymore) or a good 113 degrees outside (I’m talking in Fahrenheit; it’s the equivalent of 45 Celsius). He wears light colored clothes under the thing.
No seriously, he doesn’t even take it off when doing parkour.
A psychologist who has no idea of why he is basically doing the job of a life coach for Haytham. He doesn’t even really coach him, just remind him to eat, sleep, helps him with his son’s education and let him cry on his shoulder when he’s having too much. He also gives free tips for the people who ask him nicely.
Had a girlfriend back in university, before an ugly break up between him and his former group of friends, from which she was part off, happened. Now, everyone is sure he and Haytham are a thing. He wouldn’t blame them.
Had an ugly depression that almost finished in a suicide attempt. He’s now a successful psychologist living in an eccentric but friendly community. He’s the physical embodiment of things being able to get better. When people remarks how lucky he was, he answers ‘‘I make my own luck.’’
Arno
The French-Austrian adopted son of the rich De La Serre family following the tragic, early demise of his father, and inherited the Dorian fortune. He refuses to use the fortune of his family for personal reasons.
His style could be best described as swinging between ‘‘relaxed fanciness’’ to ‘‘complete and utter dishevelment’’. Depends on how depressed he feels in the morning.
The only constant is his parkour attire: blue raincoat with hood on and red scarf.
He’s a local journalist trying to write a book and works in a little cozy café mid-time to make ends meet. Why someone having every diplomas and qualities necessary to become a detective became a journalist is anyone guess.
He’s in a relationship with his step-sister Élise. They’re not technically siblings, but it’s still somewhat weird. Right now, they’re having a break in their relationship, and he doesn’t take it well, but respect her boundaries.
He has a severe case depression due to a lot of things going on in his life. The result is nights after nights of getting drunk, numbness to everything and sudden burst of crying. Everyone worries about him and bring him baguettes when he feels unwell because he loves baguettes so fucking much.
Jacob
One of the Frye Twins and the most excited, eccentric and friendly of the two.
He has a punk rock clothing style with an heavy dose of steampunk, and god forbid if you make comment about his collection of hats.
He still has the same style when doing parkour, but he takes the hat off and put on a leather jacket with a hood.
He’s the leader of a street gang called the Rooks, which is mainly composed of delinquents and former crooks. Most of the time, they just help around their community and get into street fights because why not? They also are the local weapon and weed providers.
He’s in a relationship with no one right now, but he still flirts with everyone he thinks is pretty. Bisexual. He also has two person pinning after him. He flirts with both of them, so it’s a start.
His reason for wanting to form a gang his both to provide a friendly neighborhood gang if you need someone beaten up, because, say what you want, but crime pay off, and because why not? He also has a soft spot for kids and will do anything to protect them.
Evie
One of the Frye Twins and the most levelheaded, serious and wise of the two.
She has a hipster style with a slight Victorian influence and some leather trinket here and there. She can basically make some flannel look classy.
Like her brother, she just puts on a leather jacket with a hood when doing parkour.
She’s working as a secretary mid-time while in marketing school. She’s also a member of her brother’s gang, but shhh, don’t tell anyone. She just gets in street fights and help with the damage he causes, anyway.
She’s in a loving relationship with one of her classmate that Jacob likes to poke at (the relationship, not the classmate), Henry Green.
She’s utterly exasperated with her brother and the rest of the town antics, but it doesn’t exactly stop her from taking part of them...
Desmond
Poor, poor Desmond... he just wanted a quiet life...
He dresses like in the games: simple white hoodie.
He never takes the hoodie off. Not even to parkour.
He’s a bartender in a nightclub of their district, Bad Weather.
Is in a quiet but romantic relationship with Lucy. His cousin and great uncle don’t approve.
He ran away from his home because his father was an asshole when he was sixteen. He remembered his reasonable great uncle Rashid and his quiet identical-to-him-but-blonde cousin Altair that were from Syria and who apparently lived in a town a few miles away from New York that he met last Christmas, and after packing what he owned, took a bus there. He then questioned everyone on where these two lived until he found their house. Nine years passed, a custody battle happened between William and Rashid, Rashid won, and Desmond is now used to the insanity of the little town, even if he still sometime screams when someone suddenly jumps from a high building just to land in a haystack. Why there is so much haystack in a town of the 21 century, he’ll never know. Maybe because of the horses...

Best PC gaming deals: graphics cards, SSDs, games and more (November 2nd)
Remember, remember the 23rd of November, many savings, discounts and deals. I know of no reason why Black Friday season shouldn’t be a right old steal. That’s how the nursery rhyme goes, right? What’s that? It’s actually meant to be about fireworks and the 5th of November, describing the great gunpowder plot that failed to blow up the Houses of Parliament? You must have been misled as a child, dear reader, because everyone knows that November is about one holiday and one holiday only – the joyous and most beautiful deals jamboree, Black Friday.
There are just three weeks to go now before that fateful savings bonanza, but I know how much you all like a good deal in the here and now, too. Thus, your deals herald will provide. The Steam Halloween sale may be over, but there’s still plenty to be getting on with this week, including cheap Assassin’s Creed, lots more spooky game discounts and a whole lot of hardware. To the deals!
Game deals
Over at GamesPlanet, their latest publisher sale is all about Good Shepherd this week. Highlights include 85% off psychological survival horror show Pathologic Classic HD (pictured above), another 85% off 2D pixel platformer Atomik: RunGunJumpGun, 27% off action strategy fest Phantom Doctrine, and 15% off lovely squishy platformer Semblance to name just a few.
GamesPlanet are also doing a massive Assassin’s Creed sale, too, just in case you fancy playing every game in order (and have infinite free time) before you eagle-dive into Odyssey. Sadly, Odyssey itself isn’t part of the sale (Kassandra would sooner boot you off a cliff than be called ‘cheap’, probably), but you can get 52% off the pyramid-riddled Origins, 62% off London cockney caper Syndicate, 66% off French disastermasterpiece Unity… you get the idea.
Alternatively, if you somehow missed Halloween in all the chaos of clocks going backwards, forwards, who even knows-wards, then you’ll be pleased to hear Humble’s spooky deals are still going on for another three days. Even better, you can get Murderous Pursuits for FREE when you buy any game in the sale, which is most excellent.
Some highlights include the very good Oxenfree for 75% off, eerie, sci-fi horror ’em-up SOMA (also 75% off), alien strategy fest XCOM 2 (yep, you guessed it, it’s 75% off) and, er… Mount and Blade: Warband for a tasty 60% off. Not sure how that fits in with Halloween, but perhaps it’s got something to do with all those pointy sticks. Plus, if you haven’t played it yet, do yourself a favour and pick up Stories Untold. It’s 75% off – that’s £1.74 in the UK – and well worth your time.
If your favourite way of experiencing the world’s most popular sport is through a heck of a lot of spreadsheets rather than kicking virtual balls around, then Football Manager 2019 is currently 18% off over on Fanatical right now. That works out to just £31.15 in the UK, which is much cheaper than Steam’s £37.99.
If you also like experiencing the grueling reality of war not by shooting everything to smithereens but through the gritty, heartbreaking tales of civilians, then Fanatical are also doing This War of Mine‘s Anniversary edition for 77% off until 4pm GMT this afternoon (that’s 9am for PT peeps and midday ET).
UK deals:
There are graphics card deals aplenty this week, particularly if you like shopping at Ebuyer. These include the Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1050Ti (4GB) for £161 (down from £185), the Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 Amp! Edition (6GB) for £240 (down from £282 and also comes with a free copy of Monster Hunter: World), plus the MSI GeForce GTX 1070Ti Gaming for £405 (down from £480, and comes with the same free Monster Hunter: World deal).
Over on the red corner, you have until tomorrow (November 3rd) to take advantage of AMD’s three free game deal, which bags you Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Strange Brigade and Star Control: Origins for freemans. You’ve still got until the end of December to actually redeem said codes, but AMD graphics card sales after tomorrow won’t come with all those free games attached.
So, with that in mind, why not consider the MSI Radeon RX 570 Armor OC (8GB), which is currently just £159 from Overclockers UK (down from £210), or the MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor OC (8GB) for £220 from Ebuyer (down from £310). Or, if you prefer something a bit more powerful, you can save £50 on the PowerColor Radeon RX Vega 56 Red Dragon, which is £350 from Overclockers UK, or £60 on the Gigabyte Radeon RX Vega 64 Windforce OC, which is going for £440 from Overclockers UK.
Over in monitor town, Scan is doing a bunch of discounts on MSI gaming monitors, including the 24in, 1920×1080, curved 144Hz FreeSync screen Optix MAG24C (£179 down from £220, the 27in, 1920×1080, curved 144Hz FreeSync-enabled Optix MPG27C (£349, down from £399), and its 1440p cousin, the MSI Optix MPG27CQ (£400, down from £469). I was a big fan of the latter when I had it in for testing, so have a read of my MSI Optix MPG27CQ review to see what you’re getting.
Asus are also giving away free copies of Blops 4 with new monitors at the moment, making monitors like the 27in, 2560×1440, 144Hz FreeSync equipped Asus ROG MG279Q even better value than before. This currently going for just £429 over on Box, down from its usual price of £519.
Alternatively, ultrawide monitor lovers will be pleased to hear the 35in, 2560×1080, 144Hz Nvidia G-Sync Acer Predator Z35 is going for £845 from Box right now (down from £995, read our Acer Predator Z35 review for more info), while its 120Hz G-Sync rival, the AOC AGON AG352UCG6, can be had for £735 on Box (down from £793, read our AOC AGON AG352UCG review for more info)
Meanwhile, there are loads of SSDs going cheap as well at the moment, with Samsung ones also netting you some free Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on selected drives. The best deals I’ve seen are on the Samsung 970 Evo (500GB), which is down from £195 to £130 over at Ebuyer (read my Samsung 970 Evo review to see how it compares), and the 1TB model of the Samsung 860 Evo, which is going for £165, also from Ebuyer, down from £250.
At the other end of the SSD scale, you’ve also got the bargain-tastic Kingston A400 (480GB) going for £70 from Ebuyer (down from £98) and the WD Blue 3D NAND (250GB), which is now just £48 from Amazon (down from £68). To see how the latter stacks up against the competition, have a gander at my WD Blue 3D NAND review.
US deals:
If you’re in need of a new gaming monitor, you’re in luck, as not only do you have the aforementioned free Blops 4 dealio taking place on selected Asus monitors, but there are also some giant discounts to be had on Dell’s Alienware monitors right now. Starting with the former, you’ve got the 28in, 4K FreeSync-enabled Asus MG28UQ, which is $380 at Newegg (down from $450) and the 27in, 2560×1440, 165Hz Nvidia G-Sync screen, the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q, which is going for $692 from Newegg and is not to be confused with its 4K, G-Sync HDR cousin, the PG27UQ.
Then, over in the Dell camp, you’ve got until tonight to bag yourself $600 of the ultrawide, 3440×1440, 120Hz Nvidia G-Sync Alienware AW3418DW, which is currently going for $900 at Newegg (down from $1500). Plus, you can get an extra $100 off with promo code 24BFDLPC4. There are also big discounts to be had on the 25in, 1920×1080, 240Hz FreeSync monitor, the Alienware AW2518HF, which is down to $330 from Newegg from its usual $500.
As for graphics cards to make the most of these monster screens, this week’s best deals include the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050Ti, which has had its usual price of $259 slashed to just $171 over at Newegg, making it one of the cheapest GTX 1050Tis cards around right now. There’s also the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming (6GB), which is $255 at Newegg right now (down from $290), and comes with a free copy of Monster Hunter: World.
Remember, AMD’s free game bundle also expires in the US tomorrow, so if you want to make the most of 1080p card offers like the Gigabyte Radeon RX 570, which is down to $160 at Newegg, then you better hop to it. The same goes for the barga-riffic 8GB MSI Radeon RX 580 which is down to just $244 at Newegg as well.
Samsung’s 860 Evo continues its aggressive discounts as well, with the 500GB model going for just $87 from Newegg (down from $110), while its NVMe sibling, the Samsung 970 Evo (250GB) can be had for just $88 from Newegg (down from $180). If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, then how about the 500GB WD Blue 3D NAND instead, which is now $54 at Amazon (down from $69).
That’s all for your weekly deals heralding today. As always, some of these deals may get snapped up pretty fast, so apologies if some of these have already gone by the time you click on them. Until next week, happy deals hunting.

DualShockers’ Favorite Games of 2019 — Lou’s Top 10
December 25, 2019 10:00 AM EST
Whether it was putting too much time into Slay the Spire or getting scared out of my mind in RE2, here are my top 10 games of 2019.
As 2019 comes to a close, DualShockers and our staff are reflecting on this year’s batch of games and what were their personal highlights within the last year. Unlike the official Game of the Year 2019 awards for DualShockers, there are little-to-no-rules on our individual Top 10 posts. For instance, any game — not just 2019 releases — can be considered.
Seemingly, 2019 is a year of gaming backlog regret — with less disposable time this year (thanks wedding planning), I tended to invest myself in games that just wouldn’t stick, or would disappoint massively only after getting hours into it. When things boiled down to Game of the Year 2019, I realized that I hadn’t touched most of the titles that were grabbing the gold… and so my backlog grows.
What specifically? Well, my Nintendo Switch has been building dust through the year as I side-stepped major RPGs like Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Astral Chain. Games I tended to be more skeptical about — Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Gears 5, and Devil May Cry 5 — slipped through my grasp, only to be followed by deservedly rave reviews. And I’m hoping to get Death Stranding for Christmas, so I can finally see what all the fuss was about.
With that said, 2019 was a surprisingly strong year for gaming as we lead to the swan songs of this generation. With most of the biggest names in games colliding in 2020, we are set for possibly the best year in gaming…ever. The possibilities are strong for the next generation of consoles, and boy is it great to be a gamer.
Now enough with the rant, here are my Top Ten Games of 2019:
10. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Truth be told, I’m thrilled to see that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night managed to win Best Metroidvania in the DualShockers Game of the Year Awards for 2019. Koji Igarashi had made a lot of claims about what this game would be, and — despite an audience hungry for 2D Castlevania successors — the hype for the title seemed to fizzle. But despite some hype deflation, there is a ton of fun to be had in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night — especially its signature polish and style that only Iga can bring to a game.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
9. Apex Legends
After 2018, I had just about given up on the Battle Royale genre. Everyone was doing it, and seemingly no better than anyone else. Then in comes Apex Legends out of nowhere and takes the esports world by storm overnight. Introducing the ping system and being able to revive teammates — things that would eventually be lifted by other competing titles — Respawn Entertainment was able to show that they have the chops to make in impact in any genre at a moment’s notice.

8. Kingdom Hearts III
Controversial. I know. And perhaps my review for Kingdom Hearts III hasn’t stood the test of time…but I maintain that for all the game’s weirdness and quirks, it was the best PS2 game I played this year. And that’s not to be flippant about it.
There is a market for remastered games in 2019, and sure — Kingdom Hearts III isn’t that. But…isn’t it? Stunning graphics, updated gameplay, and themes and gameplay designs that feel stale in 2019. It is a blast to the past, perhaps a perfection of the Kingdom Hearts series that we’ve known so far. But without some fundamental changes, the series might quickly run its course.
Thankfully, there is a smart development team behind it, and the game is fun. The series certainly has a dedicated fanbase that will stick with it, and I earnestly that they know where the series has to grow. And as we’ve learned, sometimes wishing is just what you need to save the day.

7. Assassin’s Creed Rogue: Remastered
After the news about multiple bugs in Assassin’s Creed Unity, I gave the series a large berth — even after the brief hiatus and soft-relaunch with Assassin’s Creed Origins. With all the clamoring about the series’ comeback, I thought it was time for me to pick up where I left off.
Though I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the Nintendo Switch port of the game, the underappreciated Assassin’s Creed Rogue is just a much better Black Flag. Where Black Flag pushed the boundaries of what an Assassin’s Creed game could be, Rogue lifts those same elements and layers in a compelling story of betrayal and personal growth.
More importantly, Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered feels like an old AssCreed game, and sometimes that is what you need. Relatively short, kind of like a checklist, and great to play as you have something on in the background.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Assassin’s Creed Rogue: Remastered.
6. Far Cry: New Dawn
Another controversial take, but I really liked Far Cry: New Dawn. Is it perfect? No, not by a longshot. Is it the best evolution that Far Cry has seen since Far Cry 3? Without question.
Here’s the deal: if you don’t actively follow the Far Cry series or never played Far Cry 5, what New Dawn does will probably be lost on you. Adding in RPG elements, overhauling (read as “re-skinning”) Hope County, and linking the games was excellent. But the game was also weird — not nearly substantial enough as a standalone game, but underappreciated and ignored as an expansion.
I still maintain that if Far Cry 5 waited a year and added the content from New Dawn as a late-game epilogue (similar to the ending of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Pokemon Gold/Silver), complete with the radical new tone and gameplay elements, Far Cry 5 would have revolutionized the series at large.
Instead, we have a fun experiment that critically flopped.
Check out DualShockers’ review for Far Cry: New Dawn.
5. Slay the Spire
The top five games are really where I spent most of my time this year, and Slay the Spire is probably where I sank the most time. On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ever put more than an hour into the game in a single sitting. Slay the Spire became my handheld game of the year in 2019, offering a surprising amount of depth and an addictive roguelike structure. It’s hard to explain, but the game scratched an itch in all the right ways.
4. Judgment
I didn’t pick up Judgment until I heard rumblings that the game was in substantial consideration for Game of the Year 2019 (spoiler alert, it won our GOTY award). While it had been a game that I was hoping to play, I — like many people I’d talked to — was waiting to finish the Yakuza series before taking the plunge into a spin-off series.
And while I haven’t beaten the game, it has monopolized my playtime since I’ve started. There is something so perfectly ‘gamey’ about Judgment; it’s fun to play and an absolute joy to watch. With a bit more time, this may have topped my personal list, but chances are I will be exploring Kamurocho for weeks to come.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Judgment.
3. Tetris 99
Tetris 99 is an evil game that wants me to sell my soul to finish in 1st Place. And I’m pretty close to doing just that.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Tetris 99.
2. Resident Evil 2
Not sure if I’ve ever made this known, but horror games are my jam: both the absurdly polished and the flat out disasterpieces. Without surprise, Resident Evil 2 was in the former, being a terrific game across the board — a love letter to arguably the best game in the storied series’ history. Capcom put in a ton of love and thought into Resident Evil 2, and they should all be recognized for it.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Resident Evil 2.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
It seems like an annual tradition for me to give a top slot to a game that didn’t come out this year — and that’s precisely what is happening again. With all of Red Dead Redemption 2 firmly under my belt, I can say with confidence that this is not only my game of the year… but probably also my game of the generation. It’s been repeated time and time, but Rockstar has reached new heights with the story and characterization of Arthur Morgan that has yet to be surpassed. While I get where the expansive open world and unintuitive gameplay may throw people from the start, those willing to stick around (much like I did this year) will be rewarded tenfold.
Check out DualShockers‘ review for Red Dead Redemption 2.
