Any cute Yagami sibling headcanons?
Nothing really I haven't already shared before, so I'll just copy/paste a few of my previous answers for this question here: YAGAMI SIBLING HEADCANONS: -I think Light genuinely feels very protective of Sayu and his mom, though he tries not to overtly reveal this to them a lot (as heās not the most demonstrative guy with his affections to anybody most times)
-I think Light and Sayu played a lot of Nintendo together growing up. And one of Sayuās favourite childhood things was wedging herself behind him in the computer chair when they got their first computer and watching him play games on there, too (Light was always keen to patiently explain his strategies to her as he went)
-I think Sayu was one of the only people Light actually felt close to and goofed around with a lot, since he always kept a bit of a polite distance with his school friends -Sayu doesnāt like having her friends over to visit because they always end up crushing on her big brother and wanting to follow him around the house instead of hang out with her... she got used for this quite a few times by other girls in her class, unfortunately
-When Sayu was born Light wasnāt the type to throw a fit about not being the baby anymore, but actually very excited to have a sibling, and took to being a big brother right away and teaching her stuff and bossing her around
-Sayuās crush on Hideki Ryuga means that Light has gotten way too familiar with his music by hearing it so much around the house. Light will often absent-mindedly start singing and humming his biggest hits to himself when heās working or studying, and then get annoyed with himself when he catches himself in the act (and Sayu will also tease him mercilessly about it if she does)
-If L had ever been invited over to the house during the university arc to pretend to study with Light, I bet he'd have done something like peek into Sayu's room and see all the posters of Hideki Ryuga on the walls and then pretend to accidentally mistake it for Light's room. Which of course, Light would be silently fuming about, but mostly because inwardly he'd be going: "YOU KNOW FOR A FACT THAT'S NOT MY BEDROOM BECAUSE YOU PUT 64 HIDDEN CAMERAS INTO MY ACTUAL BEDROOM, YOU ASS"

About Lights supposed care for Sayu
That may have been true for pre-timeskip Light, but post timeskip, there's not much evidence that Light feels any kind of affection for his family. To prevent his plans from being ruined, he attempts to kill her after she is abducted, but doesn't only because it wouldn't make sense for Kira to do that. He also shows no reaction at all to her near catatonic state following the abduction, meaning that Light likely sees Sayu as nothing more that another person he could potentially use to further his own goals, much like all the people he interacts with
I assume you mean this post of mine?
I think I have already compared how the anime adapted this scene vs how it was portrayed in the manga. And I suppose that you're going by the former since the hints (however subtle) are present in the manga that Light cares for his family (which includes his sister of course).
There's a much detailed & thorough post by tumblr user casuistor about this subject so I really recommend you to check it out.
Okay moving on to your ask.
About Lights supposed care for Sayu That may have been true for pre-timeskip Light, but post timeskip, there's not much evidence that Light feels any kind of affection for his family.
That may be true if we're going by the anime. But since I prefer the manga (I had read it before watching the anime) and analyze canon through it most of the time, I'll have to disagree with you on that one since the manga does have evidence that Light loves his family.
It's subtler than before the time-skip but it's there. I'll happily point out why I think so.
Light appears to have grown distant from Sachiko & Sayu and that's because of the whole 'Soichiro chose to disown Light (as he disapproved of Misa) & Light ran away to live with Misa' lie they had told them. Yet their (+ Soichiro's) opinions on Kira matter to him:
You do not try to convince people of something as important as your secret ideology if you don't at least care about those people (read: Light cares about his family).
Despite being a lil distant, Light & Sayu haven't lost their playful teasing/bantering kinda relationship as Light compliments Sayu on jokingly rejecting Matsuda and Sayu teases Light about marriage.
I'll discuss Sayu's kidnapping in the next section of my answer (see also: my linked post at the beginning). To sum it up: Light puts himself to a disadvantage (as Kira) to save Sayu.
I believe these words are very genuine. Light has, from idolizing his father, grown to disapproving his self-sacrificial (his putting justice above family) nature. He reminds his dad how hard it'd be for the family if he leaves them behind and makes him promise that he'd do his best to have both of him & Sayu live. Observe closely how not letting the Note to Mello isn't the priority but rescuing Sayu is the first thing on Light's mind.
He also asks Soichiro if he & Sayu are okay as soon as he gets the opportunity. Not a word about lamenting the loss of Death Note but a simple are you okay?
After a few days, Mello contacts Soichiro again (the latter's phone is to be kept on in exchange for the former not killing him). And asks him about the new L's identity and threatens to kill Sayu if Soichiro doesn't answer.
Observe Light's face here. It's very clear that he's having a great difficulty in making a decision: either tell Mello L's identity & risk getting killed yourself or refuse Mello's demands resulting in his dad & sister's death.
He seems to be actually considering surrendering his name to Mello to save Sayu & Soichiro! (But it doesn't come to that as Matsuda offers his name instead)
My argument is this: if Light didn't have any affection for his family in the second arc (as you say), then why did he hesitate to plainly refuse to answer Mello's question (a question which is too risky for the new L's life)?
The answer's plain & simple: He wouldn't seriously consider to give Mello his name if he didn't care for his family. Thus, he does hold affection towards his family. Period.
I can go on & about how Soichiro's death devastates Light but a picture is worth a thousand words:
I do believe that his tears are very genuine here; Light's crying does Not have crocodile tears behind it- in other words I think Light is VERY upset by his dad's death so much so that he loses his cool that Matsuda has to physically restrain him:
After Soichiro's death, he tries to emotionally distance himself from that tragic event (referring to said event by the impersonal 'them attacking Mello's hideout' rather than smth vulnerable to Light i.e. 'his dad's death'):
He's trying his best to avoid explicitly thinking about his dad's death, choosing to drown himself into his work instead: so much so that Matsuda is concerned about him:
And he acknowledges the risk of his identity as 'Light Yagami' is L being revealed to Near just because of him staying quiet after his dad died like he is THAT affected by it and trying to hide that fact.
I hope you can see that Light cares about his father. Let's get back to the topic of his regard towards his sister.
To prevent his plans from being ruined, he attempts to kill her after she is abducted, but doesn't only because it wouldn't make sense for Kira to do that.
I have discussed at length why that is not the case in the manga but here's the gist of it. I tried to keep it short. I really did.
The NPA director Takimura is kidnapped first -> Other NPA heads are duly notified -> Light kills Takimura without a moment of hesitation, assuming that the kidnappers will take the fall for his death (it's part of Light's keikaku plan so that Kira won't be blamed for his murder. And since only the kidnappers and the NPA know about the kidnapping: it won't be assumed that Kira has any link to the NPA) -> the kidnappers do take the blame themselves (just as planned!...)
(...not. as: ) Sayu is kidnapped -> Mello instructs them to not notify the other NPA departments lest they kill Sayu -> Ide pressures Soichiro to notify other NPA personnel out of obligation, Soichiro agrees to throw his daughter under the bus. and. then-
Light does a complete 180 and says outright to the task force that it was probably Kira who killed Takimura (instead of y'know killing Sayu immediately to stop the exchange like he did with Takimura) -> essentially arguing against notifying other NPA members (to save his sister actually)
This sudden change in Light's plan (from having the kidnappers blamed for Takimura's death to Kira being blamed instead) is actively detrimental to Kira's cause since only the kidnappers and the NPA personnel know about Takimura's kidnapped and suggesting that Kira is behind Takimura's murder implies that Kira has ties to NPA (remember that Light is now a part of that NPA) so not a win for our Light-o.
Also, if he was really serious about killing Sayu- he had two easy, very easy options:
1. Do nothing.
That's it. Remember Soichiro was ready to notify the other NPA personnel (Ide pressures him to do that). Thus, if the NPA (apart from the task force) made any move, the kidnappers as per their threat would've killed Sayu themselves.
If Light didn't jump in to rescue his sister (coz that's what he did in canon) by offering an alternate possibility of Kira being behind Takimura's death, Sayu would've ended up dead.
2. Kill Sayu himself at the best opportunity (which was when he had just heard the news about her kidnapping; not unlike how he wasted no time to kill Takimura).
But Light far from considering these options (*holds a neon sign reading 'LIGHT DOES NOT WANT TO KILL HIS SISTER AS HE CARES FOR HER'*), goes "hey, is anyone gonna save my sister?" and does not wait for an answer which he's already gotten what-with even his father agreeing to notify the NPA personnel which would've resulted in her death.
So no I don't agree with you when you say "To prevent his plans from being ruined, he attempts to kill her after she is abducted, but doesn't only because it wouldn't make sense for Kira to do that." since the reason it wouldn't make sense for Kira to kill Sayu was because of Light himself blaming Kira for Takimura's death (he did that to save her otherwise the police would've moved and the kidnappers would've killed her anyway).
The result of Light's actions? Now if he were to kill Sayu after revealing the real murderer behind Takimura's death, the list of Kira suspects would narrow down to...the task force as they are the only ones who know about the kidnapping other than Mello & his gang. Light is canonically a genius so why would he do something like this to jeopardize his own previous plans? The answer is simple as Ryuk points it out.
Light has a soft spot for his sister. I have elaborated on this in my above linked post so this is a bit redundant to say the least. (not that I mind your ask! I love discussing the tragedy of the Yagami siblings to anyone who'd care to listen.)
He also shows no reaction at all to her near catatonic state following the abduction, meaning that Light likely sees Sayu as nothing more that another person he could potentially use to further his own goals, much like all the people he interacts with
With Light you cannot take his reactions (or lack thereof) at their face value. He's more complex than that.
The following scene (in which we see Sayu visibly showing her disdain for Kira since he's the reason why their dad is so busy that he couldn't come for New Year's.
And Light's eyes are hidden as they usually are when he's feeling emotionally conflicted. He can't stop being Kira however that doesn't mean he likes causing his family misery indirectly.):
...is a direct parallel to this one (& both happen to be around New Year's which I assure you is not a coincidence):
His dad is dead because of him being Kira. I'm not saying Light is the direct cause of his death. Far from it, as Light had intended Matsuda to have the eye deal and die for it, but instead his dad had volunteered which wasn't according to his keikaku. Still Light being Kira is of course an indirect cause to Soichiro's death and the idea isn't lost on Light.
He likely feels very guilty for the same and cannot bring himself to face his remaining family. Sayu's current state (her in a wheelchair after the kidnapping) was indirectly caused by him being Kira as well. It isn't hard to imagine that Light has difficult feelings about that too. I'd argue that his lack of a reaction IS the telling factor of how much he cares actually.
He cares to the point of not daring to meet the rest of his family's eyes after the two incidents (Sayu's kidnapping & Soichiro's death). He cares because he is the cause of the Yagami family being the most tragic. He cares because no matter what he told Ryuk, that he'd be the exception to the rule of Death Note users being faced with misfortune, he now knows that he isn't that exception with his own family in shambles.
Death Note is a tragedy because of how much Light Yagami cares.

Isn't Sayu Yagami wheelchair bound these days from the trauma? Honestly, I feel kinda bad for her.
She'll survive. I'm not the worst thing that's gonna happen to her, if all suspicions are accurate anyway. Sucks it ended up for her the way it did. I do feel for her, but I'm not all to blame. She comes from the world's most unlucky family. Her father is so focused on justice, he can't keep his mouth shut when his words will hurt those close to him. Her mother has ridiculously high expectations. She's lived her life in the shadow of her perfect brother, and now that he's under suspicion, she might lose the little love she got from him anyway. Honestly, I'm surprised I'm the one that pushed her over the edge...

saw the updated post! hmmm, Light taking his sister trick or treating perhaps?
hi hello thank you!!! also sorry for adding info after you'd already sent an ask. semi-arbitrarily setting this in canada in the canon timeline (1997, due tot their ages) to facilitate trick or treating.
Light stood just inside the door with Sayu, determinedly buttoning her snowsuit over the witch's costume he'd made for her. This was difficult, because she wouldn't stop sobbing as he did so.
He was eleven, which was just barely old enough to walk his kid sister around, and also old enough to know someone else should have been taking care of her tantrum.
"Stop crying," he said, firmly. "You're too old for this." He didn't bother looking around for backup -- he liked that his parents trusted him to do these things, but that didn't mean he liked doing them all the time. He was fairly certain that if he ever mentioned this they'd start treating him like a regular eleven-year-old instead of a special eleven-year-old, and so he did not.
"No one will see," she said, voice soggy through her tears. "They won't know what I am."
"I will," Light said. "And besides, you've got a pointy hat." He finished hooking the final button, then adjusted it for her. He'd made it out of felt and hot glue and rhinestones. "What else would you be, with a pointy hat?"
This seemed to help, at least a bit. She sniffed, then rubbed at her eyes. Light reached into the pocket of his own coat -- it was not a snowsuit, because he was too old for that -- and dug out a pack of tissues. He handed it to her. She blew her nose then handed it back to him, which was pretty disgusting, but took it anyway, just like Mom always did, then balled it up and dropped it on the mantlepiece. He could throw it out when they got back. "Okay," he said. "You're ready to be a big girl now?"
"No."
"Well." He wasn't exactly sure what to say to that. "I guess that's too bad. I guess I'll go out and get all the chocolate for myself and eat it without you." She looked like she was going to start sobbing again, so he hastily went on. "Or you could just come out with me and show everyone your cool hat. And not freeze to death. Okay?"
He held out his hand. She took it. Probably she should have been wearing mittens, too, but he decided that wasn't absolutely essential -- her snowsuit had pockets, anyway. "Alright," he said. "Let's go. Remember we're a team, alright?"
She nodded. He opened the door and led her out into the night.

Do you have any trans fem light headcanons?
I always have Light headcanons šļøšļø
Usually I hc Light as bigender (she/her used generally as Kira-specific given that I think that's the only other spot in his life that he could acknowledge as a change in who he was SUPPOSED to be rather than who she really IS), because I do think Light actually does feel mentally aligned to his masculinity in a solid capacity, just not completely so, but! I can totally cook up something for trans fem Light :3
I actually have thought about this beforeāit's somewhere in my long ass wip ideas listābut the snag I always hit is Light even,,,,figuring out that she's trans :/ Because canon Light tends to just ignore when he feels bad in any sort of emotional or mental capacity, so dysphoria would probably ping "his" radar as something to go "Welp, time to ignore that! į(; į )į" about. So I see Light discovering it either young enough that she doesn't know that she should be denying it yet, or old enough that she could move towns and change her name with little fussānever speaking to her family again, of course, but that's the price of being trans in early 2000s Japan with traditionalist parents :') Sayu might eventually go looking for her though. Sayu strikes me as someone open-minded.
BUT, these two options have different catalysts. If Light discovers it young enough for Sachiko to see it as "okay" to socially transition, then Sayu is the catalyst. Sayu has lots of pretty, traditionally feminine things, and she wants to play with her brotherāwhich, of course, Light indulges. Sayu bullies Light into dressing up to play with her, she does makeovers with him, he does her hair and make-up and she does his (and while I usually hc Soichiro finding out and gently but firmly putting a stop to that, for this AU let's say he doesn't find out). Light, after enough times doing this with Sayu, probably notices the fact that he actually prefers Sayu's things to his own. He probably permanently borrows a hair pin or two, maybe even buys a few of his own when he runs errands for his mom. And Sachiko inevitably finds out about it, but again. Sachiko is just as much of a snake as Light in that she's cunning and able to switch faces quickly. So she probably has a long talk with Light about why he bought them and what's going on, and he confesses (after much manipulative prodding) that he doesn't "feel right", that he hasn't for a while, and he thinks it might be because he's a boy.
So Sachiko does what any good mom would do; she fixes it. Light would be young here, seven to ten I'm thinking, enough that it wouldn't be hard for Sachiko to buy Light some new clothes and start introducing her as a daughter. When Soichiro comes home, she sits him down after the kids are asleep and tells him what's going to happen. She does not ask for permission or his thoughts on it. She goes "Light is our daughter now and you'll treat her as such. We're moving cities in two weeks so she can have a new start in a new school. If anyone ever asks we've always had two daughters." Soichiro is bewildered of course, and instinctively affronted at the idea, but Sachiko steamrolls him. Queen Gaslighter, your honor, and her new Princess Gaslighter who learned from the best. They do as Sachiko bids, and Light is able to live her life unimpeded.
HOWEVER. If Light figures it out as an adult, then RYUK is the catalyst. Human Ryuk, of course, as I don't see grown-up Light with the Death Note having time to realize anything like that when he's busy manipulating the Task Force and his own father and the SPK and Misa and Mikami andāyou get it. Anyway, Ryuk is the one who makes Light realize that she's a she instead of a he. And, being the terrible influence/cynical voice of (sarcasm) reason he is, Ryuk is the one who encourages Light to go whole hog with vanishing off the face of the Earth and changing her name instead of transitioning in secret or telling her family. But again, by this time it's too late for Light to socially transition and keep her family; everyone knows Chief Yagami and his brilliant son, their extended family knows Sachiko had a boy and a girl. They wouldn't be able to take Light in as a daughter, only disown her as a son. And Light knows this, Ryuk knows this, but Ryuk is the one that knocks Light out of her self-sacrificing "I shall simply swallow it down and deal with the lot I've been handed, continue living my life as a man even though it grows ever-chafing and suffocating :)" and into "Fuck that. I'll be doing whatever I fucking want, actually, because I'm better than literally every other conceivable human being and I should be able to revel in my own splendor as the person I want to see in the mirror." Encouraging Light's ego is double-edged sword here, obviously, but try getting Ryuk to give a fuck ĀÆā \ā _ā (ā ćā )ā _ā /ā ĀÆ
Light abandons her life as a Yagami and Ryuk helps her forge some papers so she can get a job in Fukushima as an accountant/architect/designer/whatever the hell she wants to do as Asahi Tsuki. (This is one of the few scenarios I ever picture Light changing her name in. Only ever out of necessity. Her name was never the problem, and she likes itāshe keeps it if she can).
I don't see Light's personality changing all that much? Save for the fact that transitioning probably yanks down the veil of her politeness a little and she acts a little bit more herself. I.e. mean and sarcastic but in a way you only realize three hours after the fact. Light's learned to go after what she wants viciously in this case, and is probably a little more indulgent of herself as well. Unlike canon Light, trans fem Light has learned to ask herself "What do I want?". She probably lets herself have things that she didn't before, like sweets and beautiful clothes and shiny trinkets and expensive stationaryāthings she actually likes instead of things she's expected to have. After all, if Light's going to be "selfish" why not go all in? ;3

Second arc Matsuda gives me the ick in general: asking out Sayu, perving on Misa while cheering Light on with cheatingā¦ Just why
I totally agree with you. Matsuda was such a likable character in the first arc, but Ohba changed him for the worse. And the part with Sayu was also very unsettling, especially because of this panel.
Ok, they are both adults at the time, but he hasnāt seen her in years. The last time Matsuda saw Sayu was when she was a child or a young teenager, and the first thing he did after seeing her again was hit on her. Really? No how-are-you-doing or other small talk. He isnāt even alone with her. Heās doing this in front of her parents and his supervisor, who happens to be Sayuās father. Itās terrible that Matsuda doesnāt have any kind of restraint, even in a situation like this. Same with Light cheating with Kiyomi, no restraint whatsoever.

i think a happy ending could have happened if sayu bullied light more. attends the To-Oh entrance ceremony and sees light talking to L -- omg bro you finally met your equal better take him home for dinner i need more data on how genius minds work. calls him during the post-tennis cafe date and congratulates broski on finally letting himself get some. nosy-siblings her way into shit and somehow convinces L that seducing light is the most reasonable path forward for the purpose of teasing the shit out of her brother. sayu takes one look at the handcuffs and the second light sees her face he's fighting the urge to throw himself (and L) out a window. steals the watch at some point and just. fucking wears it somewhere light cant call her out without stooping to her level of childishness.
i want the younger sibling to have more power in the narrative basically. you probably know who i am
are you my younger sibling? bc if you are, youāre wrong and sayu deserves nothing more than what she was given.
But if youāre not my sibling, I completely agree with you, Anon!
As an Older Sibling Who Went Through Major Angstā¢ļø myself, the only thing that could probably stop me from committing Truly Heinous Acts is if my sibling ridiculed me for it.
Like Sayu saying at the dinner table that the whole Kira situation is scary? Light hangs his head internally and sighs because she doesnāt understand, sheās too young and naive, the sacrifices he makes- blah blah blah.
If Sayu was like, āI looked it up, and Kiraās a girlās name in the west. So girlboss.ā ??? I think Light would feel emasculated and embarrassed enough to have second thoughts, and Sibling would pick up on the vibe just enough to continue making fun.
I also think Sayu is probably like āDamn, oniichanās really stressed about Kira. If I continually annoy him by making dumb jokes, maybe heāll feel better about the whole situation.ā
While Light is just āThis kid is more clever than I give her credit for. Her remarks are brutal. I must never let her try stand-up comedy, I would lose every last one of my followers.ā
#can you tell that all i want ever is Yagami Sibling Drama#i have so much faith in my siblingās abilities#im the better one and theyre the one that can kick my ass :)#therefore we are the yagami kids but with a happier ending hopefully#M- if i ever pick up a death note iāll share it w you#hc#light#sayu yagami#death note#head canon#ask

Hello there š! With all the genderbent asked of DN you've received, who are your favourite genderbent characters and which ones do you hate? Which ones do you think will garner hate from the fandom and which ones do you think will be liked?
K:- I can't say I hate any of the gender swapped character in "always a different gender", as I spent enough brain energy on them, but one I found really didn't work for me was Male Syau. There just really wasn't a lot I felt I could do with him that Takada couldn't do better thematically. Female Matsuda could be interesting but is harder to give reason to why she is among the police in that particular time. And Male Sachicko and Fem Sochiro was fun to think about, and offer a lot of variables, which is both good and bad.
E:- Mmm I don't hate anyone at all here in the cast. I love male Misa though.
K:- We have had a lot of fun with Male Misa
As for who I like, Female Near has grown a lot on me, as has Rival Takada, and Cat Misa.Ā I've gotten a lot more invested in all of them then I expected. I never expected posting that Female L convo we had would get so much attention and asks following from it.
I like that Male Misa, and his friendship with Female L has grown to have as much of a dynamic as Lady Light and L.Ā And that Light and Takada have a one-sided rival dynamic.Ā
E:-Oh totally. Which is gonna hurt when someone dies. L dying and Misa Misa is going" We have to uh cele-- ummmm"
His voice wavers a bit as he sniffles loudly and claps his hands," celebrate!"
K:-So many hearts are going to break in this climb for godhood. As for the fandom, I couldn't possibly begin to guess. I'm not even great at predicting which of my fanfictions are going to get a lot of attention.Ā
What about you Eclipse? What are your preferences and predictions
E:-What is godhood if you hesitate to step on the lesser backs?
K:-Being a billionaire, and therefore not a clean path.Ā
E:-I still prefer to end it with Light lashing out at the world, breaking the skin of the mask she spent so much time sculpting for it to all come down.Ā
Not sure how it goes that way but Mikami still being a threat as is Misa.Ā
K:-I don't know how I want it to end.Ā Many things are going to break though.Ā
E:-Misa dying after making too many eye deals.Ā
K:-I don't think that's direct death, as it takes half a remaining lifespan.Ā
Still, Misa taking an eye deal to get light out of the wearhouse and the Shinigami telling him "you will die tomorrow if you do this."
"Then what matters is what I get done today. Give me the eyes NOW!"
And Misa dies and Victory is both complete and hollow.Ā
Light didn't make any eye deals, but something in her dies that day, surrounded by the bodies in the warehouse.Ā
E:- a hollow victory indeed.Ā
K:- what about you Anon? Who are you favorites, who do you dislike, and how would the fandom react to them based on what you know and observe?Ā
