The wise and charming international bestseller and hit Japanese movie—about a young woman who loses everything but finds herself—a tale of new beginnings, romantic and family relationships, and the comfort that can be found in books. Twenty-five-year-old Takako has enjoyed a relatively easy existence—until the day her charming boyfriend Kashikoi, the man she expected to wed, casually announces he’s been cheating on her and is marrying the other woman. Suddenly, Takako’s life is in freefall. She loses her job, her friends, and her acquaintances, and spirals into a deep depression. In the depths of her despair, she receives a call from her distant uncle Ojisan. An unusual man who has always pursued something of an unconventional life, especially after his wife Momoko left him out of the blue five years earlier, Ojisan runs a second-hand bookshop in Jimbocho, Tokyo’s famous book district. Takako once looked down upon Ojisan’s life. Now, she reluctantly accepts his offer of the tiny room above the bookshop rent-free in exchange for helping out at the store. The move is temporary, until she can get her old life back. But in the months that follow, Takako surprises herself when she develops a passion for Japanese literature, becomes a regular at a local coffee shop where she befriends a graduate student, and eventually meets a young editor from a nearby publishing house who’s going through his own messy breakup. But just as she begins to find joy again, Kashikoi reappears, forcing Takako to rely once again on her uncle, whose own life has begun to unravel. Together, these seeming opposites work to understand each other and themselves as they continue to share the wisdom they’ve gained in the bookshop.

White Ivy by Susie Yang
White Ivy by Susie Yang. This seemingly simple and romance is everything but! Giving parts of Gatsby class commentary and a Stepford wives imposter syndrome style twist. Partial immigrant song as the main character is a half American half Chinese woman who grows up on the wrong side of the tracks, but has her sights set on white picket fences and the greener grasses of country club lawns. I love a character who’s flawed and faulted, in Ivy we find a character who is not only that but also equal parts guile and guiltless

It's a snowy night in NYC and it's the perfect weather for a gothic story. The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Choksi published 2/14 and would make a great choice for lovers of adult fairy tales, dark romance and gothic writing. Thanks to @williammorrowbooks and @bibliolifestyle for the gifted copy. QOTD: What booknis keeping you company tonight? 🌼 Synopsis 🌼 A sumptuous, gothic-infused story about a marriage that is unraveled by dark secrets, a friendship cursed to end in tragedy, and the danger of believing in fairy tales—the breathtaking adult debut from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi. Once upon a time, a man who believed in fairy tales married a beautiful, mysterious woman named Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. He was a scholar of myths. She was heiress to a fortune. They exchanged gifts and stories and believed they would live happily ever after—and in exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past. But when Indigo learns that her estranged aunt is dying and the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage . . . or their lives. Combining the lush, haunting atmosphere of Mexican Gothic with the dreamy enchantment of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is a spellbinding and darkly romantic page-turner about love and lies, secrets and betrayal, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. #TheLastTaleoftheFlowerBride #tbr #RoshaniChokshi #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #igreads #reading #bookphotos #bookrecommendation #20booksbyasianwomen #bookish #books #bookworm #bibliolifestyle #AsianAuthors #darkromance #read #gothic #literature #fiction #fairytale https://www.instagram.com/p/CpMaOAOAu9D/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Babel by R.F. Kuang Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went into this book blindly but also knew of it thanks to TikTok when it came to THAT TikTok video review. This book definitely blew my expectations! Each page kept me reading more and more that didn’t want it to end. My emotions were everywhere when reading it but a lot of anger and disgust when it comes to main theme: colonization. Robin, Ramy, Victoire and Letty’s years at Babel show their journeys through the novel that in the end you see where each of them fall. It’s a historical fiction book with more history that people should be made aware of. While also having a fantasy and dark academia theme that kept me on my toes. Definitely recommend. Also need to pick up Kaung’s other novel The Poppy War. *HCP umbrella so I tagged the hcpunion page* #babel #babelnovel #rfkuang #bookstagram #bookreview #bookworm #2023bookchallenge #historicalfiction #fantasybooks #darkacademia #historicalfantasy #colonialism #decolonozation #booktok #chineseauthors #asianauthors #asianamericanwriters #hcponstrike #hcpunion https://www.instagram.com/p/CnudL0dJKPO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In case you’d forgotten, I loved @suelynntan’s debut novel, Daughter of the Moon Goodess. While I was perfectly intent to leave the story there, I must confess I really missed the world of DOTMG. This follow up, and gorgeous cover by @kuri_huang, did not disappoint! . . . . . #HeartOfTheSunWarrior #HOTSW #YA #yabooks #OwnVoices #AsianAuthors #authorsofcolor #diversereads #readersgonnaread #goodreads #bookish #bookselfie #books #instabook #instaread #bookstagram #booktastic #bookgasm #booksworthreading #readinglist #readingisawesome #bibliophile #booknerd #bookaholic #booklove #bookworm #bookstagrammer #whatareyoureading #advancereadercopy #netgalley https://www.instagram.com/p/CnFBZl3pitW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This book is AMAZING!
Genderqueer, Non-binary, Asian, Sci-Fi/Fantasy author. And the characters have they/them pronouns, until they choose their biology and gender terms as adults. Super interesting concept, super interesting characters, super interesting world, 215 page novella.
Strongly recommend, especially if you, like me, are looking for books with Queer representation, or just sci-fi/fantasy books not written by white men.
5/5

It’s particularly rewarding to read a random, internet- suggested novel that makes you want to seek out the author’s other work. Yu’s novel on identity as written as a film script was much more poignant than I’d imagined. #interiorchinatown #charlesyu #igreads #instabooks #bookeeview #asianauthor @bklynlibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/CVnJSKMLGjdVBebyMNIIJeMQzv-co0tVOwDEI80/?utm_medium=tumblr

"They say all old houses have death in them, but what of houses that begin in death?" She is a Hanuting by Trang Thanh Tran was a beautifully written debut. The slow pace built up the tension until it was boiling over. The sense of dread that lasted throughout the story felt lifelike. The descriptive tone made it all the more creepy and horrifying at certain points. I'm not scared of much but bugs and worms creep me out and they made parts of this book terrifying for me. The horror scenes were the stuff of nightmares. This one was a Vietnamese gothic horror tale with heavy themes and social commentary woven into the mani story. The author explores, Vietnamese history, French colonialism in Vietnam, racism, abuse, sexual identity, migration to the U.S, biphobia and themes of belonging. Our main protagonist grapples with what it means to be Vietnamese, especially language proficiency. This is also a coming of age story where Jade is trying to figure out her sexuality while navigating her feelings of abandonment towards her father, who she's forced to spend time with in order to get tuition money. The house as a metaphor for the sins of colonialism was my favorite part. It was literally devouring and bleeding people dry, just as imperialist powers do to marginalized nations. The house was a reminder that no amount of whitewashing of history can get rid of the stains of the truth. The ghosts of the past will always show themselves and expose the truth. The only way to rid ourselves of oppressive systems is to burn them to the ground and start new because those in power never give it up voluntarily. The ghosts of colonized people always come back to speak truth to power. If you love gothic writing, ghosts in haunted houses, slow burn tales and queer coming of age stories, this one is for you. She is a Haunting published is out now in multiple formats. Friday Reads Oct 23
My reading this past week has been an adventure, from the ski slopes in Ruth Ware’s One by One, to the Texas pastures in Butterfly Yellow by Thanha Lai.
The library pick for this week is The Salt Roads by Nalo Hopkinson. The story focuses on four women and the relationships they have with their lovers. One woman has the same first name as me. She is Jeanne Duval, a descendent of Black slaves and white sailors.
The rest of the books this week are ones I have started and want to continue on into the new week.
Here is the list:
1. The Salt Roads by Nalo Hopkinson
2. China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
3. Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi
4. The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay
5. Fledgling by Octavia E Butler
